A PARTNER WORTH SALUTING
By Kevin Williams - Shore Sports Network Director
S
ince the Shore Sports Network was formed in our current format, we have had a partnership with Jersey Mike’s which has included their sponsorship of programs like Team of the Week, the Shore Conference Basketball Tournament, Senior All-Star Basketball Game, WOBM Christmas Classic and more. It’s not a surprise that the sub giant would help promote local high school sports because it’s been a passion of Founder/CEO Peter Cancro and other executives for many years throughout the shore area. March is a ver y special month for the more than 1,550 J e r s e y M i k e ’s l o c a t i o n s a c r o s s t h e c o u n t r y a s t h e y j o i n forces with over 200 local charities for the compan y’s 9th Annual Month of Giving, which last year raised more than $6 million for those charities. “They are an unbelievably special group,”
said Beauchemin, who was named Coach of the Year by the Shore Conference Coaches Association. “Athletics is such a part of everything you can do and it helps you for later in life, but, I’ve been coaching for 14 years at Manchester and for eight years I’ve been blessed to be the head coach…I’ve never been part of a group that changed a community. It is different. The love and support of people that some of these girls have never seen in their life. They treated them like rock stars.”
There was certainly merit for the royal treatment. Manchester put together the kind of performance reserved for the short list of VIPs who’ve made their mark in the rich history of Shore Conference girls basketball. The Hawks soared into rarified air, surpassing one mile marker after another along their epic flight. By
Gregg Lerner - SSN Staff writer
izzied by an opening flurry that pinned Manchester with a 13-point deficit less than three minutes into the Tournament of Champions semifinal, the Hawks were looking up from an extremely deep hole against a Saddle River Day squad known for wasting no time burying their opposition.
D
The position, though steep, was also metaphorical from the view of head coach Dave Beauchemin. Over his eight seasons piloting the Hawks, he’s overseen the gradual transformation of a program that struggled in his first three years just to be recognized, persevering despite a 19-45 mark during those times, with a vision of a future ascent. In the campaigns that followed, Manchester saw a seismic uptick in success. One winning season after another, victory totals escalating from year to year. That steady rise hit its apex this winter. Games started to become events, drawing interest from enthusiastic community supporters that embraced the Hawks’ spirit and the recurring throng confirmed its loyalty by routinely packing into any gym, a converted flock eager to voice its unyielding allegiance to repay a group that carved its niche among the state’s elite. The stouthearted Hawks refused to believe anything was impossible. They rallied from that sizable deficit – as well as two other double-digit gaps – to push Saddle River Day to the limit before succumbing in the end, 76-63. The loss a bitter ending, no doubt, but also an exclamation point on a historic run that encouraged a blue-collar town to hop aboard and enjoy the ride.
8
Beauchemin steered his talented crew that featured the dynamic stylings of senior guard Leilani Correa, the lunch-pail work ethic of senior forward Dakota Adams, the versatility of sophomore swing Destiny Adams, unflappable guidance of junior point guard Kemari Reynolds, emblematic selflessness of junior guard Serenity Anderson and instant effort of reserves Nahkaleigh Hayes-Jones, Morgan Brustman, Myah Hourigan, Amyah Bray, Victoria Labrecque and Emily Barron on the journey of a lifetime. Manchester marched to a B South crown on the crest of a 14-0 showing, stormed to its first Shore Conference Tournament crown, coronated with a 58-42 triumph over St. John Vianney and won its third straight South Jersey, Group 2 championship. But, it didn’t stop there. The Hawks avenged season-ending losses to Manasquan in each of the previous two state semifinal encounters by dethroning the five-time defending state champion, 64-48, to reach their first Group 2 final, where they stamped the occasion by upending Lincoln, 65-48. Along the way, Manchester reacted to back-to-back losses to Saddle River Day and national power Bishop McNamara (Md.) in early January by rattling off 24 consecutive wins, including a 74-44 decision against Group 3 winner Mainland in the quarterfinals of the Tournament of Champions, setting a standard that will be hard for future Hawks to duplicate but also building a culture worth sustaining through a record-breaking 32-3 record.
“Things coming to school for the girls to sign for little kids in the elementary school,” Beauchemin said of the variety of acclaim his group built through its inspiring tale. “Good, bad, indifferent things I’ve been a part of coaching different athletics for a long time and never has it been like that. It took a special group and a special run to do it. The community has changed with us and I don’t think there is any turning back.” Manchester set a course for adventure with an eye toward a new romance, a town falling in love with an ensemble responsible for encouraging civic pride in the form of a blue-and-gold army that left the Hawks’ Nest, spread its collective wings and flew upward on an ascent to championship peaks, driven by hard work as much as honed talent and encouraged by a coach passionate for his calling.

Senior All-Star Game:
MVP Award Honoring Art Harmon
O
nce again the Most Valuable Player Award in both the girls and boys Senior All-Star Games will honor the late Art Harmon, a Shore Basketball official who spent four decades involved in scholastic sports on the court, field and even the beach. The Shore Sports Network is proud to partner with Toyota World of Lakewood and Ocean Trophies of Lanoka Harbor to present this year’s awards to the players selected as game MVPs in what will be their final appearance representing their high school teams. The award is named after Harmon, who passed away in 2009 following a 40-year stint as a member of the International Association of Approved Basketball Officials/Shore Board 194. Even when injuries prevented him from being on the court he remained active as the longtime secretarytreasurer of the organization and for some 20 years was a member of the Shore Soccer Officials Association. Harmon spent 36 years at Rumson-Fair Haven Regional High School where he taught health and physical education and coached baseball, soccer, swimming and gymnastics in addition to spending some time as the school’s athletic director. He was a legendary figure among lifeguards and ran the beach in Manasquan during
most of his 44 years as a Jersey Shore lifeguard. This award is especially near and dear to the Shore Sports Network because Harmon’s son Matt is our play-by-play voice and can be heard calling high school football and basketball and Monmouth University football. He is also the radio voice of the
New York Red Bulls Radio Network and four-time New Jersey Sportscaster of the Year.

second-best mark in the Shore Conference this year and five wins better than Manasquan’s previous high for wins under Bilodeau. They were also the most dominant Manasquan team of the past decade, averaging more points per game (66.5) and a lower opponent points per game (49.1) than any team during Bilodeau’s tenure. The Warriors also played an entertaining, uptempo style of play that Bilodeau encouraged in order to cater the team to its athletic personnel.
“It’s really just playing to our strengths,” Bilodeau said. “We are a strong rebounding team, so you try to get out and run off the rebound. Then we have multiple ball-handlers so we don’t have to wait around for one guy to bring it up, so the personnel lends itself to play fast.” The Class A Central division race was a three-team slugfest midway through the season but Manasquan hit the accelerator and ran away from Rumson-Fair Haven and Red Bank Catholic to win the division with a 13-1 record. After losing a regularseason meeting at Red Bank Catholic, 62-50, the Warriors handled the Caseys the second time through the schedule, 7460, and again in the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals, 79-59. S
ince Andrew Bilodeau took over as head coach in 2008-09, few, if any, boys basketball programs in the Shore Conference have been more consistent than Manasquan. In those 11 seasons, the Warriors have posted 18 wins or more 10 times, won 20 games seven times, own an active streaks of eight straight Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal appearances and seven straight division championships, and have won three NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II championships. In other words, it takes a special season to stand out in Manasquann and in 2018-19, the Warriors had their best season of Bilodeau’s decorated tenure. With his best season at Manasquan now in the books, Bilodeau is the Shore Coaches Association Coach of the Year in boys basketball.

Manasquan reached its usual level of achievement this past season and took it a few steps further. The Warriors rolled to a record of 29-4 – the
That SCT quarterfinal win over Red Bank Catholic was part of Manasquan’s deepest run in the conference tournament in 14 years. The rubber-match win over the Caseys put Manasquan in the SCT semifinals for the fifth time since 2010 and with a 7064 win over Christian Brothers Academy, the Warriors advanced to the SCT championship game for the first time since 2005. Against a Ranney team that will go down as one of the best in the history of the Shore, Manasquan got off to a fast start and was within four points of the Panthers with under five minutes to play in the fourth quarter before the No. 1 team in the state pulled away with a 70-60 win for its second straight conference championship. Manasquan turned its attention to the NJSIAA Tournament and authored a dominant four-game stretch in the Central Jersey Group II section. The Warriors won four straight games by an average margin of 30 points, capped by a 78-42 rout of Lincoln in the sectional final. Lincoln ended Manasquan’s season in the CJ II quarterfinals one year earlier when the Warriors were the No. 2 seed in the section. The Group II semifinal between Manasquan and Haddonfield was a clash of 29-win teams, with Haddonfield coming off an overtime win over Camden in which the Bulldawgs trailed by 12 with under three minutes to go. Haddonfield showed why it is now a two-time defending Group II champion by shutting down Manasquan’s top two scorers – Alex Galvan and Brad McCabe – on the way to a 53-43 win. Galvan was saddled with foul trouble in the first half and McCabe did not hit his first shot until the second half. While 29 wins, an SCT runner-up and a sectional championship will be tough to top, Manasquan is set up to be as good, perhaps even better next season. Five of its seven regular rotation members are slated to return, including Galvan, junior guard Kieran Flanagan and freshman standout Ben Roy.

Toms River North (24-5, 14-0) Preseason: 8
fter a tumultuous first four weeks of the 2018-19 season, A the Shore Sports Network Top 10 sorted itself out as expected during the stretch run of the regular season and
into the postseason – at least when it comes to the top-half of the rankings. For the second year in a row, Ranney went wire-to-wire as the Shore’s top team and stamped its lofty status at the Shore by winning the Tournament of Champions and finishing No. 1 in the state.
The rest of the top four is clear-cut and the No. 5 spot comes down to consistency vs. peak performance. There is plenty of room for discussion after No. 4 but this 2018-19 season will be remembered first-and-foremost for Ranney’s historic run to the Shore’s first T.O.C. title, followed by Freehold Township’s first sectional championship and Manasquan’s dominance in reaching the SCT final and winning Central Jersey Group II. Beyond that, everything is conjecture, but still worth a deeper dive. Here is a look back at the Shore’s best squads from 2018-19.
Ranney (31-3, 12-0) Preseason Rank: 1 For the first time in more than three decades, a Shore Conference team finishes No. 1 in the state in boys basketball. Ranney became the first boys team to bring home a Tournament of Champions title in the history of the Shore Conference and that still might not do Ranney’s season justice. The Panthers went 4-1 against teams ranked in the USA Today Top 25 national poll and finished No. 11 in said poll to close out the season. They also went a combined 5-1 against the other four teams ranked in the top-five in the state by NJ.com and went 26-1 against in-state competition. They also played the first 10 games of the season without junior standout Phillip Wheeler and the first 16 of the year without three-year starter Ahmadu Sarnor. With Sunday’s win over Bergen Catholic, Ranney put itself in the conversation as the greatest team in Shore Conference history and with Bryan Antoine (Villanova) and Scottie Lewis (Florida) heading to big-time national college programs, the legend of this Ranney team figures to grow even grander in years to come.
Manasquan (29-4, 13-1) Preseason: 3 While Ranney had one of the greatest seasons in the Shore’s history, Manasquan had one of the best in its history. The Warriors made it back to the Shore Conference Tournament title game for the first time since 2005 and there might not be too many champions in the history of the tournament that would have been able to beat Manasquan on that night. Ranney, however, was one of those few and the Warriors settled for runner-up in the SCT before rolling to their third Central Jersey Group II title in the last 11 years. Manasquan is set to return five of its top seven players from this year’s 29-win squad and could very well enter 2019-20 as the Shore Conference and Group II favorite.
Christian Brothers Academy (20-6, 13-1) Preseason: 2 The standards for CBA basketball are such that a 20-6 season with losses in the SCT semifinals and South Jersey Non-Public A quarterfinals is one to forget. Upon closer examination, however, CBA was a bounce here and a bounce there from having a huge year. The Colts lost to Freehold Township in the final seconds, to Elizabeth at the buzzer when the Minutemen were undefeated, to Manasquan by six points after trailing by 23 in the SCT semifinals, and to Camden Catholic by three in their first state tournament game. Camden Catholic went on to win the sectional title as a No. 4 seed and lost to Bergen Catholic – the Tournament of Champions runner-up – in the Non-Public A final. Factor in a knee injury to freshman standout Ryan Mabrey at the end of the year and it’s fair to wonder what could have been for CBA had the Colts caught just one or two more breaks along the way.
Freehold Township (24-5, 12-2) Preseason: 9 Coming off a rare losing season with a team light on senior leadership, this year was due to be a resurgent season for Freehold Township. No one, however, could have expected the Patriots to do everything they did coming off a 9-13 season with basically the same roster. Freehold Township stayed right with CBA to the end of the Class A North race – even beating the Colts at CBA. The Patriots then stormed into the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals for the first time since winning the tournament in 2007 and only lost after running into Ranney. They followed that up with the greatest state tournament run in program history, which included the program’s first ever Central Group IV championship and first trip to the Group IV championship game. That run included a win at defending sectional champion Trenton in the CJ IV final and a win over Cherokee in the Group IV semifinal. There have been Freehold Township teams with better records and more individual talent over the past two-plus decades, but none have done what this year’s group did when the games mattered most.
With a team heavy on inexperience and light on seniors, Toms River North got off to a slow start, going 33 prior to the New Year. After the calendar turned over to 2019, Toms River North played like a new team. The Mariners went 21-2 from that point on, losing only to CBA in the Shore Conference Tournament and Cherokee in the South Jersey Group IV semifinals. Three of Toms River North’s five losses could reasonably be attributed to a key injury, with junior Colin Baker missing time in the last week of 2019 and junior big man Najae Hallenbeck breaking a bone in his hand early in the Cherokee loss. Outside of that, Toms River North was as consistent as any team in the conference – they tied Manasquan for the longest winning streak of the season (16) among Shore Conference teams and extended their five-seasonlong Class A South winning streak to 60. With three key starters and a handful of bench contributors back in 2020, that winning streak has a chance to climb into the 70s next season.
Red Bank Catholic (20-8, 9-5) Preseason: 7 Considering how promising Red Bank Catholic’s 14-1 start to the season was, the Caseys’ 6-7 finish to the year was somewhat disappointing. Despite the rough second half to the season, Red Bank Catholic’s body of work is hard to top. The Caseys were one of three teams from the Shore (Marlboro and Ranney the others) to beat Manasquan this season and they also scored wins over Freehold Township, Middletown South (twice), Holmdel, Wall and Marlboro. They won the WOBM Christmas Classic in December, stretched a 13-game winning streak into January, reached the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals in February and reached the South Jersey Non-Public A semifinals in March. Although it was a tale of two seasons for RBC, the Caseys had some great moments throughout, got to 20 wins in the process and are set up to be strong again next season with the returns of Charlie Gordinier and Kevin Bauman.
Middletown South (16-12, 7-7) Preseason: Not ranked Like Red Bank Catholic, Middletown South put up one of the best resumes of any team in the Shore Conference this season. The Eagles faced every single team ranked ahead of them at least once and nine of their 28 games – almost a third – were against those six teams. Middletown South went 2-7 in those games with wins over Freehold Township and Toms River North and two losses apiece to CBA and Red Bank Catholic. The Eagles also beat Rumson-Fair Haven, Marlboro and Neptune on the road – all teams with serious cases to be listed in the final Top 10. Throw in a trip to the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals for the first time since 2010 and a win in the NJSIAA Tournament and the Eagles have a serious argument to be the No. 5 team. Losses to Manalapan, Long Branch and Freehold Boro – all of which missed qualifying for the NJSIAA Tournament – knock Middletown South down a peg but with almost an entire team due back next season, few Shore programs are better positioned for the immediate future.
Wall (21-9, 12-2) Preseason: Not ranked After finishing 14-13, missing the Shore Conference Tournament, losing in the Central Group III first round and graduating a 28-point-per-game scorer in Steve Geis last season, Wall was not on the Top 10 radar coming into the season. That changed rather quickly and the Crimson Knights never went away after their fast start. They won the Class B North division championship for the first time since 2015 and then captured the program’s first NJSIAA sectional title in 46 years by beating Burlington Township in the Central Group III final. Wall had some slip-ups along the way – losses to Jackson Memorial, Ocean and Allentown – and failed to reach the SCT quarterfinals, but a division championship coupled with that elusive sectional championship get the Crimson Knights some bonus points to bump them up to No. 8. That number should be even better next year, when Wall returns all but one player from its regular rotation.
Holmdel (15-11, 8-6) Preseason: Not ranked It may get lost because of a relatively quick stay in the state tournament, but the Hornets came on strong at the end of the season and positioned themselves as a team that could find itself in the Shore’s top five at some point next season with its wave of junior talent set to return. Holmdel beat Rumson and Red Bank Catholic in the span of a week in February and reached the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinal round for the first time since 1999 by beating Rumson again in the SCT Round of 16. The Hornets then went down to the wire in a loss to Freehold Township in the SCT quarterfinals. Holmdel got a brutal draw in the Central Jersey Group II Tournament and had to face Manasquan on the road in the sectional quarterfinals. The Hornets lost by 14 points but none of Manasquan’s three other opponents during its sectional title run came within 35 points of the Warriors. Holmdel returns five starters and all but one player from its roster next year but will again have to overcome Manasquan in Class A Central and Group II.
Rumson-Fair Haven (18-9, 11-3) Preseason: 4 As a two-time defending Central Jersey Group II champion with two starters back, this season was a bit of a disappointment for Rumson. That is certainly a product of high expectations and for most of the season, Rumson’s shortcomings could be attributed to tough losses against quality opponents. The Bulldogs, however, lost to Red Bank just before the SCT, lost at home to Holmdel in their first SCT game and lost again at home to Lincoln in the Central Jersey Group II semifinals. They could never find a consistent source of offense to complement Ian O’Connor and Jackson McCarthy and even McCarthy battled his share of inconsistency thanks to a lingering ankle sprain he played through for most of the season. Two wins over Red Bank Catholic and a trip to the sectional semifinals keep the Bulldogs in the Top 10 but they will have a tall task replacing O’Connor and McCarthy next season.
Honorable Mention Marlboro (14-13, 7-7) Preseason: 6 Injuries again derailed Marlboro’s season, with Alex Ratner missing 10 games in the middle of the season and senior center and all-time leading scorer Dylan Kaufman missing the last four. With Ratner back next year, Marlboro will hope to turn its luck around and get back into the Top 10.
Neptune (18-10, 10-4) Preseason: 5 Neptune also endured some terrible luck when sophomore Sam Fagan suffered a season-ending leg-injury in his team’s sixth game of the year. The Scarlet Fliers fought on, winning 18 games and reaching the Central Jersey Group III semifinals for the second straight year.

Ranney Completes Journey with Tournament of Champions Title
By
Matt Manley - Senior Staff Writer
F
our years ago, Bryan Antoine and Scottie Lewis made the decision to attend the Ranney School and stuck by that decision at every step of the way specifically for the opportunity that was in front of them Sunday evening at Rutgers Athletic Center. The longtime teammates and current McDonald's All-Americans are sure to have many more memorable moments and have a chance to accomplish much bigger things on a much bigger scale in basketball careers that will take them where few players get to go. Whatever happens, they won't forget what they did on Sunday night at the RAC. Lewis, Antoine and their Ranney teammates overcame some uncertain moments early and late in Sunday's Tournament of Champions final against Bergen Catholic to do what seemed like a certainty four years ago: become the first Shore Conference boys basketball program to win the T of C, which the Panthers pulled off by edging the Crusaders, 67-63. Lewis capped his career with 20 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two blocks and two steals while Antoine ended his recordsetting career with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists. The two All-Americans helped carry their team through a lackluster first half, made crucial plays during a tide-turning third quarter and helped close out the state championship and No. 1 ranking in the state before riding off into the proverbial sunset.
Antoine and Lewis combined for 18 of Ranney's 21 points in the first half, with the Panthers shooting 0-for-7 from beyond the three-point line and 7-for-27 overall. "Previously over the course of the year, we have showed a lot of heart," Lewis said. "A lot of times, teams give us their best shot in the first half. We come out prepared and we just treat the second half like it's zero-zero." In the third quarter, the Panthers came to life behind their defense, as well as the emergence of junior Phillip Wheeler and Ahmadu Sarnor on the offensive end. Wheeler scored six of his 14 points in the third quarter, during which Ranney outscored Bergen Catholic, 26-16, to seize a 47-46 lead heading into the final eight minutes. Sarnor, meanwhile, bounced back from a scoreless first half with five points in the third and 13 during the second half to give the Panthers some needed offensive punch. "I just tried to do my job: play defense, crash the boards, get rebounds and my offense will come with that," Sarnor said. "That
"It shows that we are winners," Antoine said. "People kind of see us as Bryan and Scottie but that's not how we see it. We see it as Mike Dettro, Alex Klatsky - from the starters to the last guys on the bench, everybody played a role this year and in these four years."
"Our gameplan is always to attack immediately," Lewis said. "We have tremendous outside shooters but we know the strength of our game is to fast break and get to the cup."
Before Ranney could inbound the ball later in the possession, Wheeler was called for a technical foul for shoving Freemantle out near midcourt after the two big-men exchanged words. The technical foul gave Bergen Catholic two free throws and possession back, which the Crusaders turned into four points. Just like that, Ranney's lead was down to 57-52. "His motor is unbelievable, his emotion is unbelievable," Antoine said of Wheeler. "That just shows you how hard he plays. He is the same player in practice. If somebody fouls him hard hard, he'll come at you and you have to tell him, 'It's just practice.'"
"We set the bar high," Lewis said. "Winning the TOC and creating a culture and a program from scratch. That was one of the reasons we chose Ranney: we wanted to build something. We wanted that legacy - the legacy as the best team in New Jersey and the best team to come out of Central Jersey and the Shore."
18
Over the first three quarters, Ranney hit only one shot attempt from outside the paint - a Sarnor midrange jumper in the third. The Panthers finally broke the seal early in the fourth with threepointers by senior Alex Klatsky and Sarnor that stretched Ranney's lead to seven.
Ranney appeared poised to pull away after Lewis scored on drive to the rim to stretch the lead to 57-48 and the Panthers came away with a stop on the other end to retain possession with 4:22 left in the game.
Ranney announced itself as the favorite to win the 2019 Tournament of Champions with its valiant performance in a losing cause against eventual T of C champion Roselle Catholic last year when the Panthers' core players were juniors.
They carried that No. 1 ranking in the state through most of 2018-19 and were the No. 1 seed in this T of C, but did not look the part in the first half. Bergen Catholic (27-4) pounded Ranney (31-3) throughout the first 16 minutes and after 6-10 senior and Xavier commit Zach Freemantle slammed in a lob from classmate and St. Peter's commit Doug Edert, the Crusaders rode into the half with a 30-21 advantage.
time since 14-13 in the second quarter with a free throw.
The Panthers appeared to stem the tide of momentum by building its lead back to 62-54 after Wheeler returned to the game and threw-down a two-handed dunk off a feed from Antoine. On the other end, however, the 6-8 junior bumped Bergen Catholic junior Matt Zona as he was shooting a three from the top of the key and the shot dropped. was my main objective." Lewis and Antoine were very much a part of the momentum shift as well. Lewis scored nine of his 13 second-half points in the third and Antoine tied the game, 44-44, with a two-handed dunk in transition before giving the Panthers the lead, 45-44, for the first
Zona hit the ensuing free throw and Wheeler went to the bench visibly upset as his coaches tried to calm him down while the team on the floor tried to hold it together with Bergen Catholic now trailing only 62-58 with 2:46 left.
"It's a situation where there is a championship on the line and emotions are high," Ranney coach Tahj Holden said. "Phil is an emotional player and he took it a little too far. And that happens sometimes. "We got him back in the game and he made a couple plays for us, got a dunk. Things happen over the course of the game and you just have to tell yourself it's over with and keep playing." Freemantle later scored on a put-back to cut the deficit to 62-61 with 2:28 to go and after Lewis hit one of two free throws, freshman Will Richardson pulled the Crusaders even on a drive to the basket with 44 seconds left. With the game on the line, Sarnor worked into the paint and drew a foul on Richardson on the floor with 15.9 seconds to go. The senior point guard missed the first free throw before hitting the second to put the Panthers ahead, 64-63. With a chance to win the title, Bergen Catholic pushed the ball up the floor and Richardson called his number. The freshman guard put of a floater that missed the mark and Wheeler collected the rebound with 4.9 seconds left. Wheeler hit the first free throw and missed the second, but Sarnor plucked the rebound and was fouled with 0.2 left on the clock to set off the celebration. He knocked down the two free throws and Ranney's starters walked off the floor the No. 1 team in N.J. to finish out the season.
Wheeler scored 11 of his points after halftime and also added six rebounds and three steals. Sarnor pulled in six rebounds as well. Only one other Shore Conference team had ever reached the Tournament of Champions final prior to Ranney. Neptune lost to St. Anthony in the 2002 championship game. Ranney is the first Shore Conference team to finish No. 1 in the state in the Tournament of Champions Era, which began in 1989. It was a title 30-plus-years in the making for the Shore and four-plus years for the core of Antoine, Lewis, Klatsky, Chris Autino and Sarnor.
"I came to Ranney to go to school and play basketball with my brothers - my friends that I have had since sixth and seventh grade," Antoine said. "Our team didn't really change much each year and even when we had some new guys come in, it didn't change the core group. As we got older we, we start to know what everybody else is about to do on the court. It makes a big difference."
