Youth All-Star Game: The Stars of Tomorrow By Scott Stump – Managing Editor Before the high school allstars from Monmouth and Ocean counties battle for supremacy at the Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association AllStar Game on June 12 at Toms River East, fans will get a chance to see a group of players who may one day be a part of the high school all-star game tradition. For the first time this season, there will be a youth all-star game held before the high school game, and it will feature top eighth-graders from the two counties squaring off at 4:30 p.m. at Toms River East. It will be a glimpse of the future stars in the Shore Conference and a look at the youth levels that have greatly contributed to the sport’s rapid growth in this area.

“I think it's an amazing t h i n g , ’’ s a i d Vi c t o r R i v e r a o f Central Jersey Lacrosse, who will be coaching the Monmouth County youth alls t a r s . “It's about time now that players in this area are being recognized. These are going to be the stars of the future. You see the growth

of lacrosse all across the country and finally these kids are getting the opportunity to showcase how much the sport has grown in Monmouth County and Ocean County. This is a great platform to showcase their talents.’’ The connection between the youth and high school all-star games is a reflection of what happens at most programs around the Shore Conference, where high school players often still help out at the youth levels, and college players come back to their alma maters and help the high school players whenever possible. “We instill that about guys coming back,’’ said Roland Gagne, a youth coach in Jackson who will be coaching the Ocean County eighth grade all-stars. “The high school guys know our (youth) practice is always open. On Monday, we had practice for this all-star team and we had the two leading scorers from Jackson Memorial and a Jackson alum who is now at Montclair

State there to work out with the kids. That's not just indicative of our program, but all programs.’’ “Coaches are always saying to give back,’’ Rivera said. “It’s a communal program where you're constantly giving back, sharing ideas, and raising the level of the sport. I think that’s why in Monmouth and Ocean County, the sport is exploding, because of that tradition and the uniqueness of it.’’ In addition to giving fans a look at the future stars of the Shore Conference and emphasizing the connection between the youth and high school levels, the game provides the young players with a great atmosphere to showcase their talents on a big stage in front of a goodsized crowd. They get to play on the big artificial turf field at Toms River East with their high school counterparts and their coaches checking out who the next stars will be that they will have to compete with.

“ I t ’s n i c e f o r t h e m t o b e exposed to something like this and these kind of c r o w d s a t t h e g a m e , ’’ G a g n e s a i d . “ I t h i n k i t ’s g o i n g t o b e a g r e a t e v e n t . ’’

The Mustangs’ Man By Scott Stump – Managing Editor Just like the continued growth of the Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Star Game, Brick Memorial’s lacrosse program continues to make strides in its relative infancy. One constant throughout has been senior defender Dan Lamela, who has been selected to play for the Ocean County team in the all-star game for the third time in his career. He will be one of the leaders of the Ocean County defense when Ocean County tries to beat Monmouth County for the first time in the all-star game under the lights at Toms River East at 7 p.m. on June 12. This season he will be joined by a teammate, midfielder Jake Vescovi, in the game. “I think (having two players selected for the all-star game) is excellent considering our team hasn’t done that well in the past,’’ Lamela said. “It shows progress. We’re working hard, and we’re getting some good kids to come out for the team.’’ The Mustangs went 5-11 this season, but that doesn’t mean the program isn’t making progress under head coach Brent Middlemiss

after completing its fifth season of existence. “My freshman year it was all over the place,’’ Lamela said. “We had a different head coach at the time, and a lot of varsity kids didn't want to play. As time went on, we had kids going on to play in college, and this year we had a freshman and jayvee team, so it's been building up a lot.’’ The Mustangs also had a summer team that played in some tournaments and went to Princeton for a one-day event after mainly having just played in the summer league in Sea Girt during the first few years of the program. Brick Memorial’s continued growth mirrors that of the Shore Conference, which has more and more schools adding programs every year and is one of the biggest lacrosse-playing conferences in New Jersey. “The Shore Conference has grown a lot, even just since I've been playing in it,’’ Lamela said. “It used to be that CBA always just ran it, but now RBC is getting kids, Freehold Township had a great year, and

Volume-2 Issue-11

Jackson Memorial started doing well in Ocean County. A lot of teams are starting to expand, and not just the Monmouth County teams.’’ One thing that has remained the same is that Monmouth County has never lost the all-star game in its first six years, so Lamela is hoping that Ocean County can finally find a way to pull out a victory on a game that will be on Ocean County’s turf. “Especially after playing in this game and losing the last two years, that would be great to finally take it from them and show them it’s not only Monmouth County that runs the show,’’ he said. Lamela has also played with plenty of the Monmouth County allstars on traveling teams in the offseason, so he knows what Ocean County is up against. “I’m pretty close friends with a lot of those guys, so I’m looking to take it to them,’’ Lamela said. It will be Lamela’s final high school game before he heads off to play at Richard Stockton College of New Jersey. “I drove down to Stockton to get my college helmet for summer ball, and it him me that it’s over,’’ Lamela said. “I’m glad I have this one last chance to finish my career on a high note.’’

The Leader of the Jags By Bob Badders – Staff Writer Veteran goalie Adam Forrest meant a lot to Jackson Memorial's success in 2010, but a look at the score sheet and the statistics page doesn't even begin to tell the story. Forrest, the lone senior on a young but talented Jaguars roster, posted a .653 save percentage and stopped 160 of 245 shots to lead the Jaguars to a 12-5 record and the Shore Conference Class B North division title. Forrest also posted a 5.1 goalsagainst average and helped Jackson Memorial earn berths in both the Shore Conference Tournament and the NJSIAA Group IV playoffs. For his accomplishments, Forrest will be playing as one of Ocean County's goalies in Saturday's Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association All-Star game at Toms River East High School. But as far as Jaguars head coach Nick Caruso is concerned, those numbers don't mean as much as his leadership.

" H e ' s a l w a y s b e e n a l e a d e r, and not one of those quiet l e a d e r s , e i t h e r, " C a r u s o s a i d . "He knows how to get the best out of kids around him and they respect him like I've never seen kids respect another player before."

An easy choice as one of Jackson Memorial's team captains, Forrest controlled the field from the back end and always had his defenders in the right position. They returned the favor by playing solid in front of him and enabling the Jags to have one of the better defenses in the Shore Conference. During the season Forrest earned his first career shutout by making 10 saves in a key 12-0 victory over division rival Manasquan. Forrest stopped a season-high 16 shots in a win over Toms River East and made double-digit saves in 10 of Jackson's 17 games. He also allowed four goals or less nine times. Forrest was active around the net too, picking up 37 ground balls, including a season-best eight against Brick Memorial. "His athleticism is what sets him apart," Caruso said. "He is the best athlete on our team bar none and when we play most teams he's the best athlete out there. He sees the ball very well off the stick, and he has great hands." Caruso knows Forrest could have played lacrosse in college, but the senior has another passion: filmmaking. Forrest will attend the New York Film Academy as he strives toward the goal of being a movie director. Forrest will play his final high school lacrosse game this Saturday in the SCLCA All-Star game, and Caruso, as one of Ocean County's coaches, is thrilled to get to coach him one last time.

"It's awesome," Caruso said. "He's been a big part of my life the last three years and to be able to coach him in his last game is awesome. I always thought he could have played in college, but he wants to be a filmmaker and he's going for it." If he can inspire actors the way he inspired teammates, Forrest should have no problem directing the perfect script.

Seventh Heaven: TR South Wins SCT Baseball Title By Scott Stump – Managing Editor For a baseball team that has long been a gold standard for success in New Jersey, Toms River South appears to have found a foil that brings out the best in the Indians. "We just come out hard every game against Jackson because they play with a lot of intensity that you have to match,'' said Toms River South first baseman Dave Egeland. "It brings out our adrenaline. We're looking to kill them.'' The latest installment of a continuing rivalry between two of the state's top teams ended with Toms River South's seventh Shore Conference Tournament title on June 3rd at FirstEnergy Park, as the Indians topped the defending SCT champion Jaguars 7-3 to finish the season 3-1 against a team that won a school-record 25 games and reached the NJSIAA Group IV final this season. The Indians (26-4) amassed 15 hits off two Jaguars pitchers and senior lefty Andrew McGee picked up a complete-game victory for his third win of the season over Jackson and the 20th of his career to finish 20-4. The Monmouth University recruit finished the season 12-0, becoming the first pitcher in Toms River South's storied history to finish unbeaten with that many decisions.

After allowing Ogren to wriggle free from a bases-loaded jam with no outs in the first inning, the Indians got on the board first with two runs in the bottom of the second inning when third baseman Michael Coon hit a one-out single, and then Perry reached on an infield single with two outs before the Indians pulled off a double steal. Kapp then banged a hanging curveball on a full count to center field for a two-out, two-run single. The Jaguars then cut the lead

"My plan was just to come right after them,'' McGee said. "I just wanted to spot my fastball and use it to set up the breaking ball.''

in half in the top of the third inning when Meleo ripped a leadoff triple to right centerfield and then scored on a passed ball with no outs to make it 2-1.

"He was laboring a little in the fifth inning, but he was saying, 'Coach, give me the ball, I want to finish this,'' said Toms River South coach Ken Frank. "Then he actually got stronger in the last few innings.''

Jackson edged ahead 3-2 in the top of the fourth by taking advantage of an Indians miscue. Ogren drew a leadoff walk, then catcher Alex Herceg dropped down a sacrifice bunt, and Perry, Toms River South's catcher, sailed the throw into right field to put runners on second and third with no outs. Folk then slashed a one-out single to bring home two runs and give Jackson the lead.

McGee scattered eight hits, struck out two and walked two and allowed two earned runs to help the Indians win their second SCT title in the last three seasons, and his offense gave him plenty of help. Egeland finished with a career-high four hits to go with two RBIs and a run scored, shortstop Mitch Dressing went 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI, second baseman Steve Petrosino went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, leadoff hitter Kyle Perry went 2-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and a run scored, and senior outfielder Tyler Kapp wrapped up a brilliant season and career by going 1-for-3 with three RBIs. In the loss for Jackson Memorial (25-6), outfielder Matt Meleo had a triple and a run scored, sophomore Joe Ogren went 2-for-3 with a walk, and first baseman Mike Folk went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. "We wanted it all,'' said Jackson coach Frank Malta. "We wanted to be selfish and get both titles (SCT and Group IV). They capitalized on their chances, while we had some situations that we didn't cash in on.''

"They are a good team, but we've been in these spots before,'' Dressing said. "We knew with McGee on the mound, we just needed to come back and get a few runs and we would be fine.'' The Indians came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning to tie the game when Dressing hit a leadoff single and went to second on a one-out single by Petrosino before both runners advanced on a wild pitch. After Perry drew a walk to load the bases, Kapp lifted a flyball to shallow left field that was caught by Jackson shortstop Brandon Adams. With Adams on his heels after backpedaling, Dressing alertly tagged up at third base, and in Toms River South's trademark aggressive style, bolted toward home to score the game-tying run while giving Kapp his third RBI of the game.

"That's Toms River South baseball,'' Dressing said. "We just want to put pressure on teams to make a play and be aggressive. I knew he was backing up, so it was going to be a hard throw to make.'' Toms River South reclaimed the lead for good in the fifth inning when Egeland, rightfielder Chris McKenna and Dressing hit consecutive one-out singles to bring home a run before Ogren was lifted for reliever Kevin Carr. After Carr induced a groundout, Petrosino, the No. 9 batter, ripped an RBI single that nearly became two RBIs before Folk nailed Dressing at the plate on the relay throw from right field to end the inning with the Indians up 5-3. That was all McGee needed, as he stranded Jackson senior designated hitter Ian Booth at third to end the sixth inning after Booth had smacked a leadoff double to keep the lead at two runs, and the Indians then tacked on two more in the bottom of the sixth. McGee, a vastly improved hitter from last season, helped his cause with a two-out double, which was followed by a walk by Dan Scheller. Egeland then clubbed a two-run double and the Indians nearly added more on a single by Dressing, but the Jaguars threw out their second runner at the plate in the game to end the inning. "I was just pumped up tonight,'' Egeland said. "(On the double), I had two strikes and was just worried about protecting (the plate), but he threw me a fastball up in the zone, and I just drove it.'' "Jackson is a tough team, but we just outhit them,'' Dressing said. "To get the lead early was huge because you don't want a team like that to get momentum and start hitting.'' McGee only allowed a two-out single in the seventh inning before completing his unbeaten season with a game-ending groundout to third base to cap a season in which the Indians won the Class A South, Ocean County Tournament and SCT titles. In his other two wins over Jackson, he came on in relief early in the game, but Thursday was his night from start to finish. "I knew they would be really fired up to beat us, so I just worried about hitting spots,'' McGee said.

The Natural By Scott Stump – Managing Editor The first time Red Bank Catholic’s Dickie Davis gave lacrosse a whirl, it was in eighth grade when he played the game informally with his neighbor in Shrewsbury, former Christian Brothers Academy star Tim Cleary. “He would just hack me and hack me,’’ Davis said before laughing. “I was like, ‘I quit because I hate this sport.’’’ He didn’t pick up a lacrosse stick again until his junior year at RBC, when good friends and standout lacrosse players Kevin Whitlock, Pete Guastella and Tucker Hawley talked him into giving it a shot. “We were just fooling around, but I enjoyed playing, so they said to come out for the team and that I can be a defensive middie,’’ Davis said. “They gave me Kevin's little brother’s stick, and I went out for team. (RBC head) coach (Ryan) Eichner saw me play, and thought I could be a good defensive player. All my coaches were really understanding that I was new to the sport, but they

taught me everything they knew, and I picked it up easily.’’ In only two seasons, Davis went from a lacrosse novice to one of the best defensive players in the Shore Conference and an allstar. He will be part of the Monmouth County squad that takes on its Ocean County counterpart at Saturday’s Shore Conference Lacrosse Coaches Association AllStar game at Toms River East. Davis was able to make swift progress because every day in practice he faced Whitlock and Guastella, two of the most potent scorers in the Shore Conference. His good friends also gave him scouting reports on top opposing players because they often had played with them on offseason travel teams. “Each game got easier and easier as practice went on,’’ Davis said. “At first it was not fun because Kevin and Pete burned me a lot one-on-one, but when you face those guys every day, the games are not as hard.’’ Davis admits that some of his technique, like cradling, may not resemble those of seasoned lacrosse players who have been in the sport for most of their lives, but his impact can’t be denied as he helped the

Caseys win the Shore Conference Tournament this season. His future is in football, where he will continue his career as a defensive back at Marist, so the all-star game marks the end of his brief but memorable lacrosse career. “I'm just really excited,’’ he said. “This is my first all-star game ever and to play with the best kids around the Shore is going to be fun.’’ Could Davis have imagined coming this far when he decided to give lacrosse a chance as a junior? “I never would’ve thought that I would be the type of player to get picked for an all-star game,’’ Davis said. “I’m so happy I started playing lacrosse. I'm sorry to say this is my last game ever, but to do it in an all-star game with my best friends is better than losing in the Shore Conference Tournament or something like that. I guess (a lacrosse career) wasn’t meant to be, although Marist has a beginner’s (lacrosse) program and coach Eichner is trying to convince me to play up there.’’

www.allshoremedia.com like that,'' the understated McGee said moments after Frank's short speech. "It's just awesome to be part of the history here.'' McGee did it the hard way, by beating a talented Jackson Memorial team for the third time this season only two days before the Jaguars lost 8-4 to Randolph in the NJSIAA Group IV title game. Usually a high-strikeout pitcher, he only struck out two and walked two, allowing eight hits, relying on his fielders and not backing down from a fearsome Jaguars lineup that he has faced five times in the last two seasons. "He's good, and we knew that,'' Jackson coach Frank Malta said. "He's gutsy.''

oms River South was getting close to wrapping up its trademark postgame awards ceremony in the home dugout at FirstEnergy Park amidst the jubilation of winning its seventh Shore Conference Tournament title on June 3rd when legendary coach Ken Frank, a 40-year veteran, had to stop himself before getting to the pitching award. The old coach from Jersey City isn't exactly the overly sentimental type, so causing Frank to fight off some tears may have been senior pitcher Andrew McGee's most improbable accomplishment on a night he became the first pitcher in Toms River South history to finish a season undefeated with more than 10 decisions. McGee, a lefty headed to Monmouth University, tossed a complete game to beat Jackson Memorial 7-3 in the SCT final to end the season 12-0 while also earning his 20th career win in the process. His 12 wins are one shy of the single-season school record of 13 at a program with an illustrious history. When it came time to recognize him in the postgame for his feat, Frank couldn't get the words out at first for a kid who ended his career 20-4. "We've never had a pitcher...'' Frank said before trying to regain his composure. "Hold on, I'm getting a little choked up here.'' Moments after Frank detailed McGee's recordbreaking accomplishments, the two embraced while McGee received the longest and loudest ovation of the night from the players, coaches, parents and fans gathered to bask in a satisfying finish to a season in which the Indians won Class A South, Ocean County Tournament and SCT titles. "It's pretty cool to have made an impact on someone

That is perhaps the main reason why McGee had Frank clearing his throat after the game. Frank is not a stats guy, as he leaves that department to veteran assistant and program historian Mitch Powitz. Frank is about finding out what's beating in a player's chest when the pressure ratchets up in a big game. McGee was laboring a bit in the fifth inning and climbing toward 100 pitches in a tie game, but it would have taken a court injunction to pull him off the mound. "He reached down and showed a lot of substance,'' Frank said. "He was getting tired in the fifth inning, and when we thought about taking him out, he was like, 'Coach, let me finish this.' The crazy thing is that he seemed like he actually got stronger at the end of the game.'' "What he's done is amazing,'' said first baseman Dave Egeland, who had a careerhigh four hits in the win. "He came ready to pitch, and he was not going to be denied.''

fastball upon which he primarily relies, and his curveball developed to the point that it became an out pitch late in the season. Even his hitting dramatically improved, as he was batting in the heart of Toms River South's order by the end of the season after being DH'ed for most of last season. He also worked on the mental game, developing unbreakable confidence. Thursday night might have been the third time he was facing one of the state's toughest lineups this season, but he did not make any radical adjustments, did not overthink it when a lot of pitchers might have made a change in fear of a talented lineup that was familiar with them. He trusted his stuff. Jackson can adjust to him, not the other way around. "His gameplan stayed the same,'' Malta said. "They knew what was coming,'' Powitz said. "They know what he has, but we pitch to our strength.'' The confidence that McGee exudes permeates the Indians' lineup. This season, he was Toms River South's Batman suit, the Superman tights, the radioactive spider bite on Peter Parker. When he was out there, Toms River South felt invincible. "When he gets his stuff going, you can't beat us,'' said shortstop Mitch Dressing, who had three hits. The combination of his hard work in the offseason, his fearlessness, and his confidence allowed him to become the 13th pitcher in Toms River South history to reach 20 career wins, according to Powitz, and accomplish a feat that none of the greats before him ever could muster. Former star Steve Holt went 12-1 back in 2003 before moving on to Rutgers, but now McGee has plenty to chat about with his future Monmouth University teammate, pitcher Pat Light. The big right-hander finished a Shore Conference-record 20-0 for his career at Christian Brothers Academy, but never went 12-0 in a single season. "It still hasn't all sunk in yet,'' McGee said. "It still hasn't even hit me that I won't wear this uniform again, and to finish undefeated is an amazing feeling. What Pat Light did was unbelievable, so just to be talked about like that is great.'' McGee punched his ticket to an exclusive club, taking his rightful place among one of the most impressive lineages in the state at any program. In the end, he received the ultimate validation tear-inducing respect from a 40year head coach, and the stats to back it up.

What has also endeared McGee to a coaching staff that has seen it all over the years is that he attacks like no other pitcher in Toms River South history. While finishing 6-3 as a junior, McGee set a school singleseason record with only six walks in 61 innings. This season, he only walked 13 batters. "He has such guts to really challenge teams,'' said Powitz, who is the pitching coach. "Only 19 walks in two years? That is phenomenal.'' McGee also gained more movement on the two-seam

"I kind of thought that win or lose he was a legit all-time pitcher,'' Powitz said before smiling. "But to get his 20th win against a team like that in a title game? That makes it 100 percent legit. "He is now an all-time South great.''
