ASM 2012 Lacrosse All-Star Program / 23 quarterfinals.

“After the Jackson game, it kind of snowballed from there because the kids really started enjoying playing again,’’ Boyce said.

ometimes the pressure and expectations surrounding playing high school sports can make it seem more like a job than a game.

Of all the times players should remember their playing days fondly, it should be the years on their high school teams when they played alongside friends they have known since they picked up a bat or a ball. Occasionally, even teen-agers need a reminder that playing a kid’s game is fun and not hours of drudgery and disappointment. The perfect example is this season’s Manalapan baseball team, which found its love of the game just in time to do something that will not be forgotten in the annals of Braves’ history.

A blowout win over another top 10 team in the state, Middletown South, was followed by an eight-inning upset of yet another top 10 team in Steinert to win the program’s second straight Central Jersey Group IV title. A mercy rule victory over a Cherokee team considered to be in the top five in the state put the Braves into the Group IV final against Hillsborough. Senior Joe Serrapica pitched a complete-game shutout and senior outfielder Vito Gadaleta hit a tworun homer in the sixth inning in a 2-0 victory that polished off a stunning run for a team left for dead only weeks earlier. “Everything came together,’’ Boyce said. “I can’t explain how or why, but it did.”

The day before the Brick Memorial game, Boyce wrote “New season starts today,’’ on the board in the locker

notions of paying dues and waiting your turn. In this day and age, if players know they aren’t going to start until their senior year because of more talented players blocking them, they usually bag it in one way or another. They quit, they transfer, they become team cancers, or they decide to play another sport.

Seniors like Ranieri, Gadaleta and senior pitcher Louis Marotta patiently waited four years for their one chance in the sun, stuck behind All-Shore talents from last year’s senior class. By putting the team above their egos, they were able to be front and center on an epic ride. “Those guys were patient,’’ Boyce said. “They waited their turn, and they made the most of it when they got their chance.’’

Only two other sets of seniors in Shore Conference history, the Class of 2003 at Toms River South and the Class of 2009 at St. Rose, can say they were part of backto-back Group titles.

“This team could be referenced for the rest of my coaching career,’’ Boyce said. “Things didn’t work out during the regular season, but it shows that the postseason is a whole new ballgame.’

Along with the players, Boyce and his staff also were able to enjoy the ride a little bit more this year. Last season, the Braves were loaded with All-Shore talent, and it was a Group IV title or bust. From the first pitch of the state playoffs, they carried the burden that they had to do something the program had never done.

Manalapan was 12-11 and limping into the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV Tournament, one year after winning the program’s first Group IV title with a team loaded with AllShore talent. This was a much different group featuring a host of varsity newcomers that had started off the year hot and then watched dreams of a Class A North title melt away in the midst of early exits in the Monmouth County and Shore Conference Tournaments.

The day before their opening-round state playoff game against Brick Memorial, rainy weather forced the Braves to have to practice inside. That’s when head coach Brian Boyce and his staff decided to abandon the traditional practice of drills and repetition to remind the players that playing baseball is still as fun as when they first learned the game. “We just played Wiffle Ball in the gym,’’ Boyce said. “We were going to hit, but we decided to just have fun with the guys. The kids were diving everywhere and just having a great time. The kids just started having fun again.’’

Senior centerfielder Ryan Ranieri belted a two-run triple that powered a 4-1 win over a good Brick Memorial team to get the ball rolling in their first state playoff game, and then catcher Mike Knauf belted a leadoff homer that sent the Braves on their way to a stunning win over sectional title favorite Jackson Memorial in the

This time it was completely different. It was a bunch of players who nobody expected anything lofty from after the regular season. They could play loose and smell the roses along the way because the pressure was always on the succession of state-ranked opponents they faced.

room. After letting go of a forgettable regular season and realizing that it was time to just play relaxed and value the friendships and camaraderie they had on the team, everything changed.

“The thing that also made this team special is that there was a different hero in every single game,’’ Boyce said.

No one player felt he had to shoulder the entire load. Whether it was Rainieri’s big hit against Brick Memorial, Knauf’s homer against Jackson Memorial, third baseman Billy Moed making a sensational play to prevent the winning run from scoring in the win over Steinert, or Gadaleta hitting the biggest home run of his life in the final, everyone responded behind experienced stars like Serrapica and senior shortstop Brian Lamboy.

“Last year, when it was over, it was more of a relief,’’ Boyce said. “This year it was much more emotional.’’

It also was plenty of fun once the players realized that picking up a bat and a glove is not like having to sit behind a desk all day and earn a living. Sometimes it’s nice to be reminded that there are a lot worse things in life than having to go out and play baseball every afternoon, regardless of how the game turns out. Manalapan remembered that just in time, and now Boyce will smile every time he remembers the 2012 season.

Manalapan’s victory was also a tribute to the old-school
