Shaping Up to be a Classic

By Scott Stump – Managing Editor

New Jersey’s oldest high school football all-star game will celebrate its 35th anniversary this summer and once again is an event for Shore Conference gridiron fans to circle on their calendars.

The U.S. Army All-Shore Gridiron Classic will be at 7 p.m. on July 12 on the artificial turf at Holmdel High School, pitting the top seniors from Ocean County against their counterparts from Monmouth County. Since 1978 the game has been a summer tradition in the Shore, and this year’s contest will include the third annual National Guard 7-on-7 tournament as well. The Monmouth County head coach is Manalapan’s Ed Gurrieri, who led the Braves to their second Central Jersey Group IV final in school history along with a second straight Class A North crown and a schoolrecord 10 wins. Leading Ocean County will be Barnegat’s Rob Davis, who led the Bengals to their first division title in school history, a program-record seven wins and a berth in the South Jersey Group II semifinals.

He has led the Lions to four NJSIAA sectional titles, including two 12-0 seasons in the last six years, as well as 12 division titles.

Ciccotelli’s 220 career wins are the most of any active Shore Conference head coach. Since taking over at Keyport in 1978, he has led the Red Raiders to six NJSIAA sectional championships and 11 division titles.

SCLCA All-Star Game: Ocean County Makes History By Scott Stump – Managing Editor

Monmouth County jumped out to an early three-goal lead after a pair of scores by Colts Neck attack Kevin Loveland and an unassisted goal by Rumson-Fair Haven's Dan Babiak with 5:29 left in the period. Ocean fought back to cut it to 5-4 heading into the second quarter thanks to goals by Jackson Memorial's Austin Letts and Toms River East's Casey Joffe.

Barnegat's Brandon Jecas then made a bit of school history when he scored with 6:03 left in the second quarter to tie the game and become the first Barnegat player to ever register a goal in the all-star game. After Christian Brothers Academy star Donny Finn (3 goals, 2 assists) scored to give Monmouth County the lead back, Ocean answered with the decisive run of the game. It scored five straight goals to roar into halftime with a 10-6 advantage and never trailed again.

Toms River North specialist Greg Hirtes burst up the middle of the field and whipped in a shot to tie it at six with 5:02 left in the half, and Jernack followed with the go-ahead goal off an assist by Letts. Brick's Brendan Dowd made it 8-6 with a score off an assist by Brick

Holup and Cahill Take Home Top ASM Baseball Honors

I

By Scott Stump – Managing Editor

Cahill helped the Falcons put aside a disappointing regular season to make a run to the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III championship game and advance to the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals as the No. 14 seed. Teams tried to take the bat out of the hands of the Falcons' No. 3 hitter by walking him a Shore Conferencehigh 28 times, including an eye-opening 17 intentional walks. Regardless, he persevered to hit .403 with 31 hits, 21 RBIs, 14 runs scored, 5 doubles, and 3 home runs, with an on-base percentage of .598 and a slugging percentage of .636.

I didn't really feel any pressure,'' Cahill said about rarely getting much to hit. "Being walked meant it was another baserunner for us, and an opportunity for my teammates to come through.''

The Seton Hall recruit earned All Shore Media Player of the Year honors not just because of his destruction with the bat, but also for his performance on the mound. The right-hander finished 8-3, tying ASM Pitcher of the Year Brandon Holup of Jackson Memorial for the Shore Conference-high in wins, while putting up a 1.76 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP. His 76 strikeouts in 64 innings were tied for the third-most in the Shore Conference, and he allowed 51 hits and walked 12.

He jump-started Monmouth's postseason run in the SCT by outdueling Barnegat's Mark McCoy in a 3-2 Falcons win and also went 3-for-3 with a triple against the Wake Forest recruit. He then doubled home a run in a 6-5 upset of Toms River South, went 2-for-3 with an RBI double in a win vs. Jackson Liberty and even knocked in the lone run in a 8-1 loss to Toms River North. Cahill also won two games in the CJ III tournament, as the

Falcons reached the sectional final before losing to Freehold.

Monmouth finished 17-10 despite finishing tied for fourth in Class B North, and Cahill said it came down to team camaraderie.

"We came together in the locker room after a practice one day after the regular season had ended after we didn't do well in our division, and we said, 'Why not go after the tournaments while we can?''' Cahill said. "After we beat Toms River South, we realized we could compete with anyone in the Shore. Practices became more and more serious, and we knew exactly what to do. It all came together.'' A four-year varsity player, Cahill has put his name up among the greats at one of the Shore Conference's perennially competitive programs under veteran coach Ted Jarmusz.

"I'm going to miss the coaching staff because everybody there helped me develop into better player,'' he said. "I will especially miss my teammates. Even when I was a young player on varsity, they made me feel at home and get better as a player.''

He lost twice to Manalapan star Jake Winston last year and took a 2-1 defeat in the Shore Conference Tournament final against Red Bank Catholic's Brendan McGann. Early in this season, he took a hard-luck loss to Toms River South and ace Kyle Driscoll. His solution to the frustrating losses was simple - don't allow a run for the rest of the season.

"I feel like those losses fueled me into this year to win more,'' Holup said.

www.allshoremedia.com

Holup went on a run that may never have been seen in Shore Conference history when he ended the season with five straight complete-game shutouts, racking up 35 scoreless innings on his way to earning All Shore Media Pitcher of the Year honors. Even more impressively, all five of those wins came in tournaments, including two championship games, as he helped the Jaguars finish No. 1 in the Shore Conference and take home three championships. His five consecutive complete-game shutouts are believed

to be a Shore Conference record.

He tied Monmouth Regional's Luke Cahill with a Shore Conference-high eight victories in finishing 8-2, and his 0.75 earned run average ranked second in the Shore Conference. He also outdueled some impressive pitchers along the way, beating Milwaukee Brewers' draft pick Mark McCoy of Barnegat 1-0 in an Ocean County Tournament quarterfinal, topping Rutgers-bound lefty Howie Brey and Middletown South 4-0 in the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals and edging Brick Memorial junior ace Brian Cottrell 1-0 in the OCT final. In 65 2/3 innings, he had 70 strikeouts, the sixthhighest total in the Shore, and he only allowed 38 hits and walked 13.

His final masteripiece was a two-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Toms River North to bring home the Jaguars' second Shore Conference Tournament title in the last four years. He shut out the 17-win Mariners twice this season, and also had a shutout win over Monmouth County Tournament champion Freehold Township in the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs.

"He's just not real," senior shortstop Joe Ogren said. "He's just been a machine."

ASM / 7

At 6-foot-5, Holup has a projectable frame that makes him an intriguing prospect going forward. He will continue his career at East Stroudsburg University, and several coaches compared him favorably to Monmouth University star Pat Light. The former Christian Brothers Academy standout is also 6-5, and he pumped his velocity up from the low 80s to the high 90s in college by filling out his frame and refining his mechanics. Light was just drafted No. 37 overall by the Boston Red Sox and is on his way to becoming a millionaire. "With his size, he just gets on top of you so fast," Jackson junior catcher Matt Thaiss said. "And everything he throws moves, so when you factor in the movement and the breaking ball and a fastball that he can get up there at 90 (milesper-hour), he's really tough to square up."

Holup is still learning, as he was a shortstop as a freshman before being converted to a pitcher as a sophomore. It's not hard to believe that this season might only be the beginning of a memorable career.

SBCA Senior All-Star Game: Ending on a High Note By Scott Stump – Managing Editor

One of the best aspects of the Shore Baseball Coaches Association Senior All-Star Game is that it allows players a chance to end with one final positive memory regardless of what happened during the season.

Howell infielder Brody High seized that opportunity on June 14 in Monmouth County's 10-2 victory over Ocean County, going 2-for-2 and scoring a pair of runs in the final game of his baseball career, as he is not playing in college. His performance under the lights at Walter Woods Field at Middletown South helped him walk into the sunset with a good memory after a season in which the Rebels struggled to a 4-14 mark and a last-place finish in Class A North following heavy graduation losses. He had both hits off Toms River North pitcher Ryan Mihalkovitz and scored to help Monmouth County go up 6-0 on its way to cruising to victory.

"I think that will be something I'll be saying for the rest of my life - I got a hit off a draft pick,'' Healy said before smiling. Middletown South won its first Class A North title and registered its first 20-win season since 1999, but lost in the quarterfinals of two tournaments and in the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament. Thursday night helped give Healy an upbeat ending before he heads off to play at the University of Scranton.

Howell infielder Brody High

Despite Howell's struggles, High was a bright spot in leading the team with a .400 average and a pair of home runs.

"This is my last game ever, so it was just good to get a few hits, get my last win, and just come out and play baseball one last time,'' High said. "Baseball has been my life for the past 10 years, so it was good coming out with the boys and getting a 'W' to end it. I'll miss playing with all my friends and just the game of baseball, which is one of the greatest things out there.''

Middletown South outfielder Brian Healy was able to create one final memory on his home field, as he went 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. His double to left field led off the bottom of the first inning and came off Barnegat lefty ace Mark McCoy, who is headed to Wake Forest and was just drafted in the 28th round by the Milwaukee Brewers. He added a secondinning single off Mihalkovitz.

"After ending the year the way we did, I felt like I wanted to end the season better,'' Healy said. "Especially being here on our home field, those couple of hits were a great way to end it. Now that we're all going our different ways, it's going to be strange taking the field with different teammates, but I had a lot of fun.''

Red Bank Regional infielder Blake Brandon added two hits, a stolen base and a run scored, and outfielder Ryan Ranieri of Group IV champion Manalapan was 2-for-2 with a two-run single off Mihalkovitz.

Rumson-Fair Haven shortstop Chris Lorenz capped a stellar year that earned him ASM first-team All-Shore honors with an RBI single and two runs scored for Monmouth County, and his teammate, outfielder Nico Giaimo, added an RBI double. Freehold Township

catcher Josh Lodi had a walk, an RBI single and a run scored to cap a season in which the Patriots had a Cinderella run to their second Monmouth County Tournament title Middletown South's Howie Brey in four years. Ocean Township catcher Nassar Walid and Henry Hudson outfielder Brian Farrell each added RBI singles for Monmouth County, and St. John Vianney shortstop Anthony Uribe had a walk and a run scored.

Rutgers-bound Middletown South lefty Howie Brey, another All-Shore first-teamer, threw a pair of scoreless innings on his home field, striking out the side in the first inning. Holmdel lefty Dylan Baxter also threw two scoreless frames along with Raritan right-hander Danny Gutch, who helped lead the Rockets to the Central Jersey Group II title this season. Long Branch's Aaron McCue tossed a scoreless ninth inning to wrap up the win.

For Ocean County, McCoy ended a brilliant high school career with a scoreless inning and two strikeouts on the mound along with a double and a run scored off Matawan's Nick Fulop. Toms River East catcher Jordan Hoefling had a pair of singles, and Lacey shortstop Ryan Reitmeyer had a two-run single off Fulop for Ocean's only runs. Outfielder Julian Cimino, who helped Central reach the South Jersey Group III semifinals, finished his career by going 2for-3. Brick's Dan Mnich capped his career by throwing three scoreless innings of one-hit ball, striking out two.
