very week this regular season, Jersey Mike’s and Shore Sports Network will be selecting a Team of the Week based on its performance over the past weekend. Long Branch entered the game ranked No. 3 in the Shore Sports Network Top 10 and was coming off a season-opening victory over Neptune. Despite losing several top players to graduation, the Green Wave still featured state rushing champion Jermaine Corbett, standout wide receiver Jayon Farrar, two-way lineman Tracy Taylor and linebacker Jah’Kwan Gordon. Unranked Middletown North, meanwhile, was coming off a loss to Wall on its season-opener and breaking in new starters at several positions. The Lions struck first when a 3-yard touchdown run by senior running back Anthony Soto staked Middletown North to a 7-0 lead. Soto then threw a touchdown pass to Matt Spencer on a double pass for a 13-0 advantage. The Lions' lead grew to three scores when quarterback Nick Ferreira threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Spencer. It was a big game for Spencer, who caught five passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns. Ferreira completed 10 of 15 passes for 131 yards. Long Branch scored twice in the fourth quarter to make it a one-score game, but Middletown North was able to recover an onside kick late in the game and run out the clock.
T
he Jersey Mike’s Team of the Week for Week 1 is Middletown North, which stunned two-time defending Central Jersey Group 4 champion and third-ranked Long Branch, 20-13, for a monumental early-season victory. Shore Sports Network was at practice Tuesday to present the Lions and head coach Steve Bush with a special game ball and a $500 Jersey Mike’s gift card.
Middletown North’s defense was outstanding in holding Long Branch to 154 yards of offense, including just 42 yards rushing. The Lions’ defense also came up with two clutch stops after turning the ball over in their own end. Eddie Farrell made 11 tackles with two tackles for loss and Jake Jankowski recorded 12 tackles, one sack and a forced fumble to lead the way. The victory vaulted the Lions into the latest Shore Sports Network Top 10 and also stamped them as the early favorite in the Constitution Division. They’ll look to keep their momentum going when they host Marlboro (0-2) in Week 2.
One of the top games statewide in Week 0 pitted No. 1 RBC vs. No. 4 Rumson. Last season, Red Bank Catholic went 10-0 and captured the NJSIAA Non-Public Group 3 state title. Rumson-Fair Haven, meanwhile, won the Central Jersey Group 3 title, its fifth sectional title in the last six seasons, before defeating Woodrow Wilson in the inaugural Central-South Group 3 Bowl Game. Rumson grabbed the lead in the second quarter on a 21-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Collin Coles to junior running back John Volker. The Bulldogs increased their lead to 13-0 at halftime on a 33-yard touchdown run by Volker. Rumson fumbled the kickoff to start the third quarter and it appeared Red Bank Catholic would begin to grab the momentum, but junior safety Ryan Ruane came up with a huge defensive play when he intercepted a pass and returned it 70 yards for a touchdown to give Rumson a 20-0 lead. Red Bank Catholic would claw back with two touchdowns to make it a one-score game, but Rumson’s defense came up with a big stop in the final minutes to seal one of the program’s biggest regular-season victories.
T
he Jersey Mike’s Team of the Week for Week 0 is RumsonFair Haven, which opened the season by knocking off rival Red Bank Catholic, 20-14, for its first win over the Caseys since 2002. Shore Sports Network was at practice Tuesday night to present the Bulldogs and head coach Jerry Schulte with a special game ball and a $500 Jersey Mike’s gift card.
4
Rumson entered the game with several first-year starters, but those players made an immediate impact to lead the Bulldogs to victory. Most notable was Rumson’s all-new offensive line of junior James Smith at left tackle, senior Lucas Borneo at center, senior Kirk Yarbrough at right tackle, seniors James Greeley and Jack Susser and sophomore Christian Smith rotating at guard, plus senior Owen McLaughlin and junior Luke Devlin at tight end. The unit paved the way for Volker to rush for 150 yards and a touchdown against a stout RBC defense. The victory over RBC shook up the Shore Sports Network Top 10 and sent Rumson up two spots to No. 2. Playing in the American Division means Rumson will face a standout opponent every week, and the team’s nondivisional schedule is no picnic, either. This Friday, the Bulldogs will head to No. 9 Wall for another marquee game, which will be streamed live on ShoreSportsNetwork.com as the Jersey Mike's Game of the Week.

receiver/defensive back S a m Y o u n g , who had an incredible
high school football debut to lead the Panthers to a 23-13 season-opening victory over Barnegat.
Young is a standout on Point Boro’s baseball team as an outfielder and pitcher and this past season helped the Panthers win the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group 2 sectional championship. He and his twin brother, Cole, decided to come out for the football team as seniors, and Sam’s first game could not have been better. The 6-foot-6 Young caught four passes for 126 yards and three touchdowns, including a 70-yard score, to provide all three of Point Boro’s touchdowns.
when Young hauled in a 15-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Charles Vitale. Barnegat took a 13-7 lead but Young’s second touchdown – a perfectlythrown ball fade down the home sideline that Young caught and took the rest of the way for a 70-yard score – tied the score at 13. After a field goal by Joe Picolli gave the Panthers a 16-13 lead, Young pulled down another 15-yard touchdown pass from Vitale with 37 seconds left in the game to clinch the victory. Young also contributed on defense with a forced fumble. Point Boro’s flexbone triple-option offense is geared almost exclusively toward running the ball, but Young’s presence on the outside clearly gives the Panthers a matchup problem in the passing game. Head coach Brian Staub wasted no time using the team’s newest weapon and the threat of the deep ball should only help open holes for the ground attack.
Young received 18.32 percent of the votes to win After falling behind, 6-0, Point Boro took a 7-0 lead the poll over Colts Neck’s Delano Marcelus and Wall’s Casey Larkin. Pt Boro sr. wr/DB Sam Young

M13th with a glowing harvest moon dominating the night aybe it was the fact that Week 1 began on Friday the
sky, or maybe it’s just that there’s a lot of parity throughout the Shore Conference. Whether it was the supernatural or just a preternatural weekend of high school football, there were plenty of people doing a double-take when the scores began to roll in.
Three ranked teams were taken down in Week 1, including two teams in the top three, while three more ranked teams narrowly avoided upset bids. Middletown North came through with a victory over Long Branch, which was ranked No. 3 last week. Wall was ranked No. 9 last week, so it’s victory over then-No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven wasn’t a stunning upset, but it was nevertheless impressive. St. John Vianney was a borderline Top 10 team entering the season but conquered Middletown South to knock last week’s No. 10 team out of the rankings and jump all the way into the top five. Elsewhere, Red Bank Catholic, Toms River North and Manalapan escaped with victories in games that came down to the wire. The only constant was top-ranked Mater Dei Prep, which rolled to a 34-point victory over Jackson Memorial. Plenty of changes this week, so let’s get right to it. Toms River North 2-0
Mater Dei Prep 2-0
Senior running back Malik Ingram ran for 118 yards and four touchdowns on just nine carries and senior Khurram Simpson recorded three sacks and blocked a punt as the Seraphs controlled then-No. 8 Jackson Memorial, 41-7. Sophomore quarterback Alex Brown threw for 165 yards and two touchdowns and junior Naran Buntin caught two passes for 110 yards and two touchdowns. The Seraphs have won 19 straight regular-season games against Shore Conference teams. Next week: Saturday, Sept. 21 at Freehold (1-1).
Donovan Catholic 2-0
To say the Griffins have taken care of business in their first two games would be an understatement. Senior quarterback Ryan Clark accounted for 155 yards and three touchdowns and senior running back Damian Johnson ran for 107 yards and a touchdown on 10 carries as Donovan beat Point Boro, 55-0, for its second straight shutout to start the season. Junior linebacker Quamire Green had 10 tackles and senior defensive back Andre Laney had an interception. The Griffins have outscored their first two opponents, Linden and Point Boro, 90-0. Donovan does not have as challenging a schedule as many of the other ranked teams do, but so far has been lights out. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 at Holmdel (1-0).
Wall 2-0
The Crimson Knights turned in a terrific defensive performance and the offense came alive in the second half to forge a 14-3 victory over previous No. 2 Rumson-Fair Haven. Senior defensive end Ian Ackerman recorded 10 tackles with one sack and one tackle for loss while senior linebacker Dean Terry, sophomore linebacker Colin Riley and senior strong safety Jaden Carasquillo also had one sack each. Wall held Rumson to 138 yards of offense, including just 40 rushing yards. Junior quarterback Logan Peters ran for 90 yards and a touchdown and also threw a touchdown pass and junior running back Casey Larkin had 108 scrimmage yards. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 at No. 9 Jackson Memorial.
St. John Vianney 1-0
If the Shore Sports Network rankings went beyond 10 teams, the No. 11 team to start the season probably would have been St. John Vianney. With that in mind, it wasn’t a surprise the Lancers scored a win over Middletown South, but the manner in which they did certainly opened eyes. Senior quarterback CJ Duell threw for 174 yards and a touchdown, sophomore Jayden Bellamy caught five passes for 124 yards and a touchdown and Antonio Rosato had a pair of touchdowns as SJV whacked the Eagles, 35-7. The impetus for moving SJV all the way to No. 5 is its margin of victory over Middletown South compared to that of Manalapan’s (23-13 in Week 0), plus the fact that Red Bank Catholic, Toms River North and Manalapan had to eke out victories over unranked teams. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 at Brick (1-1).
Rumson-Fair Haven 1-1 Red Bank Catholic 1-1
One week after a resounding win over Red Bank Catholic, the Bulldogs were shut down by Wall in a 14-3 loss. Michael Piperno’s 20-yard field goal in the first quarter accounted for the only points Rumson could muster against a suffocating Wall defense. Senior wideout Patrick Jamin led the offense with four receptions for 71 yards. The Bulldogs drop only one spot because the loss was to a ranked team and they have a win over a ranked team, among other reasons. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 vs. Long Branch (1-1).
8
The Caseys escaped Vic Kubu Warrior Field with a 7-0 win over Manasquan thanks to a 10-yard touchdown run by Elijah Jules late in the third quarter. While the offense struggled all afternoon to move the ball on the ground and through the air, the defense was tremendous in holding Manasquan under 100 yards of offense. The defending Non-Public Group 3 state champions have not looked as good as expected so far and this week they face a potential crossroads to their season against another traditional power desperate for a victory. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 vs. Middletown South (0-2).
Senior wide receiver Dominick Jacob caught three passes for 135 yards and an 80-yard touchdown and seniors Justin Burkert, Matt Spalletta and Vinny Palmieri led a clutch defensive effort as the Mariners held off Southern, 17-12. Spalletta blocked a punt and had a touchdown run and Burkert had four tackles for loss plus a 40-yard field goal. Junior quarterback Jake Kazanowsky threw for 165 yards and senior running back Jarrod Pruitt ran for 99 yards. A huge game awaits this week. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 vs. No. 8 Manalapan (2-0).
Manalapan 2-0
The Braves offense couldn’t get going in a 147 win over Howell, but the defense did the job to keep the Rebels at bay and push the team to 2-0. Senior running back Andre Johnson ran for 64 yards and two touchdowns and quarterback Sean Kehley threw for 143 yards. Charlie Paulucci recorded a team-high 11 tackles, Jake Freedman added 10 tackles, Matt Benedetti recorded one sack and Johnson added an interception. Manalapan has a critical game on Friday night against a fellow undefeated American Division rival. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 at No. 7 Toms River North (2-0).
Jackson Memorial 1-1
The Jaguars ran into a buzz saw in the form of No. 1 Mater Dei Prep and suffered a 41-7 defeat. Quarterback Lonnie Cebulski had a touchdown run and senior defensive end Collin McCarthy had a sack and two tackles for loss to lead the way. The Jaguars will try to bounce back and have a great opportunity on Friday night at The Jungle. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 vs. No. 2 Wall (2-0).
Middletown North 1-1
There were several options for the 10th and final spot. We went with the Lions after they pulled off the biggest upset of Week 1 by taking down previous No. 3 Long Branch, 20-14. Senior running back Anthony Soto ran for a touchdown and also threw a touchdown to Matt Spencer. Quarterback Nick Ferreira also threw a touchdown to Spencer, who finished with five catches for 152 yards and two scores. Eddie Farrell made 11 tackles with two tackles for loss and Jake Jankowski recorded 12 tackles with a sack and a forced fumble to lead the defense. Next game: Friday, Sept. 20 vs. Marlboro (0-2).

T
he high school soccer season in New Jersey is underway and the Shore Conference returns three defending state champions in its midst. After a banner 2018, plenty of eyes will be on Monmouth and Ocean County over the course of 2019 and Shore Sports Network will have all the action covered. Class
A
The Class A North division has always been a powerhouse in Shore Conference soccer and thanks to the new schedule last season, the strength of the division was even more apparent. Six of the eight A North teams qualified for the Shore Conference Tournament and one of the two that did not (Middletown South) stunned unbeaten Hillsborough in the opening round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV playoffs. Expect more of the same from this year’s version of A North, which does not have a roster as impressive as the one Christian Brothers Academy rode to a Non-Public A championship and No. 3 rankings in both the state and Shore Sports Network Top 10. It does, however, have eight quality programs that all have realistic postseason aspirations heading into the season and a chance to sharpen their skills in the Shore’s toughest top-to-bottom division. Even with a big graduation hit over the summer, CBA goes into the season as the favorite but it should get a push from an annual challenger and another program on the upswing. Freehold Township appears poised for a big season while Middletown South has enough back from an exciting 2018 group to take a big leap forward. There is a lot to like throughout the rest of the field as well and while CBA, Freehold Township and Middletown South appear to be the pace-setters, there are surprises around every corner in this division. 2018 Shore Sports Network All-Shore Selection Brothers

n each of the past two years, any attempt to move Holmdel out of the No. 1 spot has proven a fool’s errand. The Hornets found their way back to the top each time by proving that, in the end, they were the class of the Shore Conference in both 2017 and 2018.
It’s still early and this is not the same Holmdel team, but 2019 is providing a similar narrative. After climbing two spots from No. 5 to No. 3 last week, the Hornets make the big jump in Week 3 after another perfect week and losses by the two teams ahead of them. The shakeup at the top is minor compared to the chaos happening in the bottom half of the Top 10, which continues into this week with no end in sight. While Holmdel’s ascent to No. 1 is the headline, it is not the biggest jump of the week. That distinction goes to the new No. 5 team, which was not ranked in either of the first two weeks. Through Sept. 15
Holmdel (5-0, 2-0)
The Hornets have a resume worthy of No. 1 consideration regardless of what the competition did this past week, so when both CBA and Manasquan swallowed close losses, Holmdel became the obvious No. 1 for this week. It was not an easy week by any means either, with both Raritan and Colts Neck giving the Hornets a fight. Holmdel needed overtime to get by Colts Neck on Saturday but once Connor Hinds’s golden goal found the back of the net, Holmdel had locked up the No. 1 spot for the first time this year.
Jackson Memorial (6-0, 2-0)
Despite some close calls, Jackson Memorial is right where it wants to be given the circumstances it has faced. The Jaguars are playing without injured senior All-Shore defender Ben Schnaak and are still getting used to life without Dan Russo, but to this point, it has not cost them any games. They found ways to beat Pinelands, Manalapan and Howell and are looking at a big week coming up, with Manasquan and Toms River South on back-to-back days.
Marlboro (4-0, 2-0)
After three-win week that included three wins, two routs and two wins over previously-ranked opponents, Marlboro surges not only into the top 10 but the top five. The Mustangs have communitively outscored their opponents 17-2, including 9-0 against their last two opponents: Manalapan and Toms River North. Throw in a win over Middletown South earlier in the week and the Mustangs have opened plenty of eyes so far in 2019.
Manasquan (2-1, 1-0)
There are some striking similarities between Manasquan’s loss to Ocean on Friday and Ocean’s loss to Manasquan last year. Manasquan went into Ocean struggling, with a 6-0 loss to Neptune in its rearview mirror and beat a Spartans team with aspirations of winning the Shore Conference Tournament and the Group III title (they went on to win both) by erasing a 2-0 deficit late in the second half. Ocean went into Manasquan struggling, having lost to Middletown South 6-0, and also overcame a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat a talented Warriors team set on winning at least one championship this year. It is a setback now, but if Manasquan needs any indication that this kind of loss can be productive, the Warriors need not look further than the program that just beat them.
Christian Brother Academy (3-1, 1-1)
After impressive wins over Washington Township and Howell, CBA got knocked to the mat by Long Branch, which picked off the Colts, 1-0, with a late goal. The Colts lacked varsity experienced coming into the season and it stands to reason that experience would bite them at some point, which it appears to have done in the loss to Long Branch. When it comes to the long haul, CBA still looks the part of a contender and seemed to shake it off with a 2-0 win over St. Joseph of Pa.
Southern
(2-0-1, 1-0-1)
During the early days of 2019, Southern is having some trouble finishing off goals but the Rams look like a real threat based on the strong play of their back line and midfield. This past week, Southern managed only one goal in 180 minutes, which included a scoreless draw against a Toms River South team that gave up four goals to TR East in its next match. Southern finally broke a scoreless spell of more than 160 minutes with a second-half goal to beat Brick Memorial and will try to carry that over to this coming week against TR East and Long Branch.
Wall
(4-0, 1-0)
Wall made it three-and-a-half games without allowing a goal before Rumson scored twice in the last 23 minutes to make the Crimson Knights sweat out a 3-2 win. With that victory, Wall has outscored its four opponents by a combined total of 11-2 with three shutouts and those opponents have been quality: Freehold Boro (4-1), St. Rose (3-1), Red Bank (2-2) and Rumson-Fair Haven (0-3).
12
Middletown North (5-1, 1-0)
Despite taking its first loss of the season on Saturday, Middletown North joins the rankings after winning its first five matches prior to Saturday’s overtime defeat at the hands of Steinert. All six of Middletown North’s games have been decided by a one-goal margin, so Saturday’s loss was the rare instance in which the ball did not bounce in the Lions’ favor.
Freehold Boro (4-1, 1-0)
The Colonials have racked up a few quality wins in the early going, with their victories coming against Ocean, Brick, Middletown South and Point Boro. The wins over Ocean and Point Boro came in overtime and the win over Middletown South marked a positive result against the No. 8 team in the rankings at the time. Factor in that Freehold Boro’s lone loss is against No. 4 Wall and the Colonials have made a strong first impression heading into a pivotal week.
Toms River North (2-1, 0-0)
Despite a humbling loss to Marlboro in its first action in a week, Toms River North remains in the top 10 on the strength of its win over Freehold Township. So far this season, this No. 10 slot has not been kind to its occupant and the Mariners will have to get back on track against the A South schedule in order to hold off a whole host of challengers.
Top 10 Watch List Colts Neck (2-1, 1-0) - The Cougars appear primed to challenge for B North after nearly knocking off No. 1 Holmdel. Monmouth (6-0, 1-0) - The schedule is very light so far but that changes when Holmdel comes to town on Monday. Neptune (5-1, 1-0) - With one lone loss to Manasquan, Neptune is well-positioned to again be a postseason factor. Pinelands (3-1, 2-0) - There is a long way to go but a road win at Lacey gives Pinelands the early inside track in the B South race. Barnegat (5-0, 3-0) - The Bengals are off to their best start in program history and after beating Point Boro and Lacey, they may be the No. 1 challenger to defending champion Pinelands in the B South race. Toms River South (1-1-1, 1-0-1) - The Indians shook off a loss to Howell by playing Southern to a scoreless draw and winning a wild, 5-4, overtime showdown vs. Toms River East. Raritan (2-2, 0-1) - The Rockets graduated a lot of talent but have been feisty early on, with their two losses coming to No. 1 Holmdel and No. 9 Middletown North. Red Bank (2-2, 0-1) - An opening-day win over Long Branch is looking pretty solid right now after the Green Wave topped CBA last week. The Bucs badly needed a win following a two-game skid and got it vs. Lacey to cap the week. Long Branch (1-2-1, 1-0-0) - The Green Wave has only one win but it’s a big one: 1-0, on the road vs. CBA on a Patrick O’Dwyer goal in the final five minutes. Toms River East (3-1, 1-1) - After a 5-4 overtime loss to Toms River South, the Raiders will try to take a big step toward the top 10 by beating Southern and Toms River North this week.

Central
The A Central division, and all of the Shore Conference and Group II for the matter, has been Holmdel’s domain over the past two seasons but that status will be challenged in 2019. While Holmdel graduated eight starters, Manasquan returns seven and returns another playmaker who played in the academy ranks last year. The two A Central rivals played a competitive game last season and with Holmdel coming back to the pack, the rivalry should heat up this year. Beyond the top teams, A Central has proven to be a deep league over the past two years. Last year, Raritan advanced to the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals as a No. 21 seed and Shore Regional followed that up by reaching the Central Jersey Group II final – beating Raritan along the way before losing to Holmdel in the championship game. Monmouth Regional lost to Holmdel in the 2017 championship game as well, so there is plenty of recent success to go around from top-to-bottom in the A Central table. 2018 Shore Sports Network All-Shore Selection Manasquan

T
consensus among Shore Conference coaches, officials and yours truly in the media after two weeks of real games is that the Shore Conference is up for grabs in 2019. After the Shore produced three NJSIAA overall group champions and four dominant Shore Conference Tournament semifinalists in 2018, this year’s field does not have the obvious favorites, at least not heading into the second half of September. For defending Group II champion and 2018 No. 1 Holmdel, that is exactly the way they wanted it coming into the season. There is just enough experience back to stay in the hunt but enough uncertainty that Holmdel began the season unseated as the No. 1 team in the Shore Sports Network Top 10.
Shore Conference and they are proving it through three games. The trio has combined to score 13 goals and dish out three assists in Holmdel’s first six games, with the Hornets outscoring the opposition 19-5. "I'm definitely going to have a bigger role now," Walier said. "Me, Jack, and Eric - it's our job to lead them and continue that tradition because we have played at such a high level the last two years. Coach Poll has come in and we have done some different things but the level of soccer has stayed the same and our love for the game has stayed the same." Coming off a 23-goal season, Giamanco is off to another fast start with seven goals in his team’s first six games. Walier and Hinds have each scored three, with Walier adjusting to a more offensive role this season as his team attempts to replace All-Americans Anthony and Joe Arena. "Now that there are going to be a lot of defenses trying to shut me down, we're going to have to finish the opportunities we get," Giamanco said. "I'm not going to get a lot so I have to make them count. The big thing is guys around me are stepping up and playing well and without them, I can't be successful."
Holmdel traded the top spot for a chip on its collective shoulder and rode that to a 6-0 start out of the gate in 2019. After entering the season No. 5 in the SSN Top 10, Holmdel has already ascended back to the top spot after two weeks thanks to wins over Middletown South (No. 8 in the preseason Top 10), Freehold Township (No. 3), Colts Neck and Class A Central division opponents Shore, Raritan and Monmouth. "Everyone outside of here is going to have their own expectations for us coming into the season," senior defender Mark Walier said. "Year-in and year-out, not matter the personnel, we start from square one every preseason and throw the expectations out the window and try to be the best team we can be. We definitely have new faces and we relied a lot on them to step up and work hard over the summer and first game you can tell that people are stepping up."
"I know we weren't picked to be at the top of the table this year and that's motivation for guys like me and Mark (Walier)," senior forward Jack Giamanco said. "We know this team has the ability to be at the top. We're not scared of any team. We know we are better than any team in the Shore or in the state so it doesn't really matter to us. We just keep competing." With a 3-0 mark in A Central, the Hornets already halfway to another perfect showing within the division, although a big showdown with preseason No. 2 Manasquan still looms. Under new head coach Ron Poll, there are eight first-year starters in Holmdel’s lineup but two of the three returning senior starters – Giamanco and Walier – were All-Shore players in 2018. Add in midfielder Eric Hinds and the Hornets have a trio that stacks up with any in the

With just about every team in the Shore Conference showing some measure of vulnerability early in the season, Holmdel is positioned to once again be among the favorites to win the Shore Conference Tournament title, which the Hornets did for the first time in 2017. With its win over Monmouth on Monday, Sept. 16, Holmdel extended its unbeaten streak to 42 matches, dating back to October of 2017. Since that loss to Pingry, Holmdel is 40-02 with both a win and a loss in a penalty-kick shootout accounting for the two draws. "I don't want to say I'm surprised to be 2-0 because it will sound like I didn't have confidence in them, which I do," said Poll, who was an assistant under previous head coach John Nacarlo for three years and was the head coach at Raritan prior to that. "I just didn't think it was going to come this quickly. But I'm pleasantly surprised and happy for the kids because there is a lot of pressure on them to fill some very big shoes." Feeling the Pressure Christian Brothers Academy and Manasquan entered the season as the Nos. 1 and 2 teams in the SSN Top 10, respectively and the bulls-eye has gotten the better of both already. In CBA’s case, the Colts ripped off two impressive wins over Washington Township and Howell before dropping a 1-0 decision at home to Long Branch, which entered the match 0-2-1 with losses to Red Bank and Middletown North and a draw vs. Matawan. CBA since bounced back by beating St. Joseph of Pa., 2-0, but the result against Long Branch demonstrated early on that whichever team occupies the No. 1 spot is not going to be invincible. Despite the setback, CBA’s players are still optimistic about their chances to win a championship or two in 2019, especially with the parity in both the Class A North division and Shore Conference as a whole. "We are always looking to get to the state final so yeah, there is definitely some pressure," Anderko said. "But the expectations are the same, the style is the same and we are

just going to try to keep getting better every day."
sectionals last year," Johnson said. "We have that in the back of our head but this year we want to get even farther. We want to win the Shore Conference, we want to win states so it's just starting from game one. We'll take one game at a time, keep working hard and keep those goals in the back of our head."
Like Holmdel, CBA lost most of its starting XI from a year ago but brings back four quality starters in senior forward Luke Pascarella, senior center midfielder Michael Casper, senior central defender Connor Anderko and junior outside back Jack Longo. Senior center back Noah Santifort also saw the field last year and gives the Colts an experienced defense around which to build.
Next Cat Up
"I feel very confident with everybody in the back," Anderko said. "We gel together. Noah and I play on the same club team so we know each other very well. I played with Longo last year and (sophomore) Declan (Kelly) is new, but he is really good."
I t did not take the senior-laden Jackson Memorial boys soccer team long to temper their shock at the news that star forward Dan Russo would not be playing for the team this season and it has not taken long for the Jaguars to show that they can find ways to win without one of New Jersey's top strikers.
Scoring goals will be a day-to-day challenge for this year’s Colts team but they have been up to the task to thus far. Pascarella – an All-Shore selection a year ago – has led the effort with four goals in four games, including two apiece in wins over Howell and St. Joseph’s.
Once again, Jackson Memorial - the No. 2 team in the Shore Sports Network Top 10 heading into the third week of the season – is finding ways to win, which it did six straight times to open the season.
In the early going, senior Joe Costa and junior Shane Borenius have shown a knack for creating goals, with Borenius putting up two goals and an assist so far and Costa dishing out three assists. Like CBA, Manasquan suffered a surprising loss early in the season but the Warriors’ did not bounce back like the Colts did.
Not only is Jackson Memorial adjusting to life without Russo - a first-team AllShore forward and a University Notre Dame commit who opted to play with the New York Red Bulls Developmental Academy this fall; the Jaguars are also playing without senior central defender Ben Schnaak, who is expected to miss all of September due to a hamstring injury, according to Jackson Memorial coach Steve Bado.
Sr. Chase Olejarz
Ocean entered its game at Manasquan on Friday, Sept. 13 with a 0-3 record after winning both the Shore Conference and Group III Tournaments last season. The Spartans lost a pair of close games to Freehold Boro and Middletown North and were also pummeled by Middletown South, 6-0. Things looked bleak for Ocean against Manasquan after the Warriors jumped out to a 2-0 advantage in the first 15 minutes on goals by senior Rich Maloney and Tommy Johnson but the Spartans made it to halftime without giving up a backbreaking third goal. In the second half, Ocean made its move, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes to tie the game and winning it on a golden goal by senior Rob Lopes – his second of the game. Overtime was again unkind to Manasquan top open up the third week of the season and again against a team that entered the game 0-3. Rumson-Fair Haven dropped one-goal defeats to Lacey, Middletown North and Wall before jumping out to a 1-0 lead on Manasquan on Monday, Sept. 16. This time, the Warriors got back in the game with an equalizer by freshman Aiden Sugrue in the 68th minute but Rumson pulled out the win in with a golden goal in the second overtime period by freshman Alec Pentikis. Despite an early-season rough patch, Manasquan still has all the makings of a team that can do damage in October and November. The Warriors return eight starters from a 14-7-2 squad that reached the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals and the final of the South Jersey Group II bracket.
ommy Johnson
"We still have a lot of experience," Bado said. "If you look at it, we lost our best returner in Dan Russo. Our second-best returner (Schnaak) is out with an injury, so guys have been stepping up and finding ways to win.
Sr. Ron Bantang
"We go into the game and we don't know who is going to get the game-winner, so it keeps the other team guessing. It's a change because Dan was our go-to for the last two-and-a-half years and we have had to adjust to that." Between Russo, Schnaak and graduated center midfielder Joe Schlageter, Jackson Memorial is missing its top three scorers from last year's 15-win team, which reached a loaded Shore Conference Tournament semifinals that included three of the top five teams in the state (No. 1 Holmdel, No. 3 Christian Brothers Academy and No. 5 Ocean) and lost to No. 2 Washington Township, 2-1, in the NJSIAA South Jersey Group IV championship game. The Jaguars trio accounted for 38 of the team's 59 goals. "We are having to rely on different players and so far we are doing it," senior midfielder Tyler Howlett said. "We definitely have confidence. We didn't know Dan was leaving until pretty late but still believed we could do what we set out to do. We still have quality everywhere on the field." Despite dealing with more turnover than expected, Jackson Memorial has avoided any slip-ups early on. After bucking an early goal to beat Pinelands on opening day, surviving an overtime game against Manalapan and handling Jackson Liberty and Brick Memorial, the Jaguars fended off challenges from Howell and Central. Both games were tied in the second half. Howlett has found himself in the middle of some key scoring plays early, as has junior striker Drew Walenty. In Russo’s absence, Walenty has five goals and two assists through his team’s first six games. "Our expectations haven't changed," Howlett said. "We want to do more than we did last year and that means winning a championship."

Freehold Twp. Still Adjusting
Marlboro Back in the Hunt
Without Star Goal-Scorer
While second-year Marlboro coach Ryan Morris was happy that his team was the most improved team in the Shore Conference by record last season, he saw that level of progress as something close to inevitable.
Just as quickly and unexpectedly as dynamic senior Tiron Shatku showed up on Freehold Township boys soccer team, that is the way he departed it.
"There was nowhere to go but up," Morris said. If being the most improved team in the Shore Conference last year was almost inevitable, being the most improved team in the conference for a second straight year is almost inconceivable. The way Morris and his year-two group see it, however, nothing this year is impossible.
The news was great for Shatku - who did not play high school soccer before the first two games of this season - and a little more complicated for his high school squad: the senior, former Philadelphia Union Academy Club member and Penn State verbal commit is heading overseas for a pair of tryouts for professional clubs in Europe, according to Freehold Township head coach Josh Mehl.
After dismantling Toms River North, 4-0, on Saturday, Sept. 14, Marlboro is now 4-0 through the season's first two weeks with a goal differential of 17-2.
Shatku will leave for his first tryout in early November, which coincides with the NJSIAA Tournament sectional semifinals and finals.
"It's a fun season so far and a really fun group," Morris said. "They are all in it for each other, they put in the hard work and they go 110 percent every single game. It's something we haven't seen for the last two years. They are a good group of kids that battles for each other and you can't beat that."
"I am proud of him and thrilled for him," Mehl said. "I think it was a shock that he wound up on our team to start the year but it still stings to have a player of his caliber and lose him as quickly as we did. He is the best player I have seen on a high school soccer field so to have him end up here was extremely fortunate to begin with.
The hot start suggests Marlboro is ready to build on its 2018 season, in which the Mustangs went 8-7-3 and qualified for both the Shore Conference and NJSIAA Group IV Tournaments after going 114-2 the season prior. Although the players on this year's team have more of a connection to the rough 2017 season, the one they hope to model is 2016 - the year the Mustangs won a schoolrecord 22 games and reached the finals of both the SCT and the Central Jersey Group IV Tournament.
"We want to make history," senior Max Shushkovsky said. "We want to be a really special team this year compared to previous years. We have the pieces and we are just really motivated as a group to keep winning and prove that Marlboro is still one of the top programs in the Shore Conference." Marlboro is winning with a balanced effort on the attack and a defense that is growing into one of the Shore’s top units in front of second-year starter and sophomore goalkeeper Nick Tango. Seniors Mike Steinberg, Max Shushkovsky and Mitchell Katsman have led the scoring effort early on. Steinberg leads the team with five goals, including a hat trick in the seasonopener vs. Brick. Shushkovsky, meanwhile, has posted four goals and two assists and Katsman three goals and an assist. In the 4-0 win over Toms River North, senior Max Rosen checked in with two assists and two players – junior Kyle Lin and senior Ethan Steinberg – each scored their first goal of the season. Senior Dan Risin also scored his second goal in the win. "There are no egos here," Sr. Max Shushkovsky Shushkovsky said. "Everyone is working together for the same collective goal. We all want to win and we all want to play together. No one is trying to just score all the goals. We all want to work together and we keep saying if we can keep playing like this, no one can beat us." "The kids have bought into everything we have said since day one," Morris said. "We do tactical discussions and they all know their role going into the game and they all know what to expect.”
18
"Even the guys on the team were thrilled for him. It wasn't a disappointment - they are genuinely excited for him." According to Mehl, Shatku initially offered to stay with the high school team until it was time for him to head to Europe but after discussing it further with Mehl and his family, decided to step away from the Patriots for the rest of the year. "I told him I didn't think it was fair that he keeps playing for us, as much as we would have loved for him to stay," Mehl said. "Firstly, I could never look myself in the mirror if he were to get hurt playing for us and it cost him his opportunity. Secondly, it's also not fair to the rest of the team - to give them two months playing with (Shatku) and then when the state tournament comes, they have to figure out how to win without him. I just thought this Sr. was best for him and for us going forward and I think he ultimately agreed."
Tiron Shatku
In his two high-school games, Shatku made a lasting impression. He recorded a hat trick in a 5-4, overtime loss at Toms River North on Tuesday night and was dangerous throughout the Patriots' 1-0 loss to Holmdel on Thursday, ripping two shots on goal and another that likely would have been a goal had Holmdel's Mark Walier not raced to deflect Shatku's shot. "That kid was unbelievable," Toms River North coach Joe Mahon said. "He dribbled through my whole team all game."
"(Shatku) is a special player," Holmdel coach Ron Poll said. "I love what I saw from him, we were just fortunate a couple of those shots didn't find the back of the net." Freehold Township still returns the majority of its starting core from last year's 11-5-3 team and will move forward without a game-changing scorer of Shatku's caliber but still with enough pieces to contend for multiple postseason titles. Since going 0-2 with Shatku, the Patriots went 3-1 over their next four games as they try to position themselves for a run at the Class A North title. Photos by:

South
It’s a rare season in Shore Conference soccer in which a team from Toms River does not finish in at least one of the top two spots in the Class A South standings but last year was that rare season. This year could be another one, with Jackson Memorial returning more than half of its starting lineup that reached the Shore Conference Tournament semifinals and the South Jersey Group IV championship game. Along those same lines, Southern returns several key players from a team that made noise in A South and the SCT and has a lot of room to grow with a team heavy on impact juniors. Of course, the trio of Toms River schools still figures to have its say in the race, with Toms River South looking to rebound from a disappointing postseason and Toms River North and East aiming to work some youth in with a handful returnees in hopes of climbing the standings. B
North
How good was the Shore Conference Class B North division in 2018? When the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III semifinals rolled around in early November, it was a final four of B North’s top teams. Colts Neck topped Neptune on the road to avenge a 4-0 regular-season loss and Ocean beat Wall to avenge a 2-0 regular-season loss before beating Colts Neck in a competitive championship game, 21. On top of that, Ocean went on to win the overall Group III championship to go with a B North title and a Shore Conference Tournament championship. It remains to be seen if the B North champion can collect the hardware that Ocean did last season but there should be no shortage of candidates for a postseason run amid this group. Of the top four teams from a year ago, Wall is the one that brought back the most from last year’s roster, but Ocean, Neptune and Colts Neck all remain set up to compete. Meanwhile, the bottom four teams in the division – St. John Vianney, Matawan, Middletown North and Red Bank – all return top scorers and a majority of their lineups. The gap between the top and the bottom of the division should shrink even more this year and the overall quality of the division won’t necessarily take a hit. Although B North season is sure to be unpredictable, one team’s returning group looks a step ahead of the field to open the season.

B
Central
The Class B Central division in Shore Conference soccer has more non-public programs in it than any other division in the conference – St. Rose, Mater Dei Prep and Ranney – and yet no non-public has won the outright division title since St. Rose’s 2010 state championship team. Shore Regional (now in A Central), Point Pleasant Beach and Asbury Park are the only teams to win the division title in the last nine years, with Point Beach entering to 2019 the defending champion. That could finally change this year, with Point Beach graduating a wealth of senior talent, Asbury Park entering year two of a rebuild and St. Rose and Ranney seemingly ready to take a step forward. St. Rose closed 2018 with a run to the South Jersey Non-Public B championship game and with its leading scorer back, the Purple Roses appear to have the momentum heading into the new year. 2018 Shore Sports Network All-Shore Selection

Class
B
South
Over the last three seasons, the Pinelands boys soccer team has gone from an upstart program to the team-to-beat in Class B South and despite the Wildcats losing a lot of impact talent, the Class B South field will still be chasing the two-time defending division champions in 2019. With that being said, this season could very well mark a return to glory from some familiar names – Point Pleasant Boro is primed for a rebound year, Lacey has some notable offensive talent back and Donovan Catholic looks ready to move out of a rebuilding phase while making a jump toward the top of the standings. The division could also be a deeper one this year, with Lakewoo remaining a threat despite some key losses, Barnegat moving into a new era with a new coach and a senior-heavy team, and Manchester returning a solid young nucleus. Pinelands will remain in that mix too and after an unbeaten season in B south play last year, the Wildcats will want to protect their spot.
