All Shore Media Boys Basketball All-Conference/All-Division Teams With the 2010-11 Shore Conference boys basketball season in the books, we present to you our 2011 All Shore Media All-Conference Teams as well as our All-Division Teams. All selections were made by Managing Editor
First Team Matt McMullen, Sr., F, CBA A two-time, All Shore Media firstteam selection, McMullen was a rare 1,000-point scorer at CBA and led the Colts to a share of the overall Class A North title, the Shore Conference Tournament quarterfinals and the sectional semifinals this season. He was second on the team at 16.6 points per game and led the team in field goal percentage (51 percent), rebounds per game (7.6), and assists per game (2.1) along with averaging 1.5 steals and 1 block per game. As a junior, he averaged 14.9 points and 8.8 rebounds per game for a team that won the SCT. A versatile player, McMullen defended multiple positions and occasionally played point forward and brought the ball up against pressure. One of the most consistent players in the Shore, McMullen was named All-Shore by the Shore Conference head coaches as well. A three-year starter for CBA, McMullen will continue his career at Colgate.
Jarelle Reischel, Sr., G/F, Pt Beach The 2010 All Shore Media Player of the Year, Reischel made a strong case to be considered again as the Rice University recruit had another sterling allaround season. As a senior, he averaged 22.1 points, 10.4 rebounds, 4.0 assists, 3.9 steals, and 1.5 blocks per game while also shooting 79.8 percent from the foul line on 208 attempts for a team that reached the semifinals of the Shore Conference Tournament and

the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group I Tournament. In his three-year varsity career since transferring to Point Beach from Frankfurt, Germany, Reischel scored 1,683 points to pass long-time Monmouth University assistant coach Ron Krayl and become the Garnet Gulls' all-time leading scorer. He also had 899 career rebounds, averaging 11.7 per game for his career along with a career scoring average of 21.9 points per game. He is a two-time recipient of the Kerwin Award, given out by the Kerwin family to the top Shore Conference player, and he was voted this season's Shore Conference Player of the Year.
Mike Aaman, Jr., C, Raritan A three-year varsity player, Aaman was selected as the 2011 All Shore Media Player of the Year after leading Raritan to its first Shore Conference Tournament title since 2004 as well as the Class A Central and Huskie Classic titles. Raritan also reached the Central Jersey Group II final, its first sectional final since 2005. Verbally committed to Wagner College, the 6-foot-9 Aaman averaged 17.1 points per game and a Shore Conference-leading 13.1 rebounds per game as well as 3.7 blocks per game. He had one of the most dominant two-game stretches in the history of the SCT semifinals and final when he scored 34 points and grabbed 23 rebounds against second-seeded Lakewood in the semifinals and followed that with 22 points and 24 rebounds in the SCT final against Rumson-Fair Haven. Aaman had a double-double in all eight of Raritan's postseason games, including a triple-double against A.L. Johnson in the state playoffs that featured 11 blocks. In Raritan's two-point loss to Group II finalist Ewing in the state playoffs, he had 24 points and 18 rebounds. Aaman was also named All-Shore by the Shore Conference coaches. Raritan (24-3) set a school record for winning percentage in a season and only lost to one Shore Conference team all season.
Kevin Alter, Sr., G, Rumson-Fh The top point guard in the Shore Conference, Alter helped Rumson achieve unforeseen heights in its program history this season. Affectionately known as "Pookie,'' Alter helped the Bulldogs reach the Shore Conference Tournament final for the first time in
school history after having never been past the quarterfinals. He averaged 17 points per game along with 6.8 assists per game and 3.2 steals per game. He also shot 79 percent from the foul line on 130 attempts and nailed 62 3pointers for a team that won 18 games and also reached the Central Jersey Group II semifinals before a two-point loss to Group II finalist Ewing. In the SCT semifinals against Point Beach, Alter dropped in 20 points and hit a crucial 3-pointer to help seal the win. In the SCT final against Raritan, Alter scored 24 of his team's 35 points in an eight-point loss to the Rockets.
Maurice Dickerson, Sr., G/F, Asbury Park The versatile 6-foot-5 swingman averaged 19 points per game and 9.9 rebounds per game while helping to lead the Blue Bishops to their first Group title since 1987. He had 17 points and 5 steals in a win over New Egypt that gave Asbury Park its third straight Central Jersey Group I title, followed that with 22 points and the gamesealing dunk in a win over Pitman in the Group I semifinals, and then registered 26 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists and 4 steals in a win over Dayton that earned him MVP honors in the Group I final. Dickerson was listed as a top-seven player by the Shore Conference coaches and was an All-Class B Central pick from a team that won 25 games and reached its first NJSIAA Tournament of Champions

While St. John Vianney and Neptune are the most prominent examples, the list goes on and on of players whose teams won plenty of games during their time, whether it was the five senior starters at Rumson-Fair Haven, or the Samantha Guastella-led group at Red Bank Catholic, or Kelsey Haycook leading a young and talented team at Point Boro, or Meghan McGuinness helping Middletown South battle through injuries to remain a threat.
W
hile this is always a bittersweet time of the year because it means the end of at least the high school portion of some great basketball careers in the Shore Conference, this season’s Shore Basketball Coaches Association Senior All-Star games truly feels like the end of an era on the boys and girls sides. For the girls, this is nothing short of the deepest senior class in the history of the Shore Conference, as a mindboggling 16 Division I recruits will be participating in the annual senior all-star game at Brookdale Community College at 6 p.m. on March 25. Not only that, but the amount of winning this group has done is staggering, headlined by the seniors from Neptune and St. John Vianney. The Neptune group of Rutgers-bound guards Syessence Davis and Shakena Richardson and Pittsburgh-bound center Chyna Golden has accounted for three straight Shore Conference Tournament titles, two straight NJSIAA Group III titles, two trips to the Tournament of Champions final, and a TOC title in 2010. Not to mention that Davis and Richardson were part of teams that won four straight Central Jersey Group III titles. They were integral pieces on a team that brought Neptune back into prominence on the girls side for the first time since the late 1980s, and they accomplished all that winning in a conference that has become the gold standard for girls basketball in New Jersey. Meanwhile, St. John Vianney and its vaunted senior class of Division I talents, Arron Zimmerman, Jackie Kates, Katie O’Reilly and Missy Repoli, also won more than 100 games during its tenure. The Lancers won four straight Non-Public A titles, a TOC title in 2009, and made an appearance in last season’s TOC final. Even for a school that has been among the state’s elite since the late 1980s, this is a special group that will be hard to replace.
While honoring a tremendous group of seniors certainly is one appeal of the all-star game, I also like it because many of these other girls were overshadowed during their time because of the prodigious winning by the top teams. The game gives fans a chance to Meghan McGuinness see a Jackie Caravella from Brick Memorial or a Lauren Romao from Point Beach in addition to all of the big names. Without question, when this class graduates, it will feel like the closure of an outstanding era of Shore Conference girls basketball and the dawn of a new one, where teams like Point Boro, Manasquan, St. Rose and others will be fighting for the championships now that some of the power teams will have to break in nearly an entirely new group.
Manchester forward Nate Nickens, who helped the Hawks reach their first sectional final in school history this season and nearly stun Kingsway in a one-point loss in the South Jersey Group III championship game. Like McMullen and Koury, Monsignor Donovan center Anthony Duszczak and Seton Hall-bound guard Sean Grennan have been two mainstays of a perennially winning program for the past four seasons, and their departure leaves question marks at a team that has had a line of succession in the past few seasons but does not have that clear standout behind those two. Just like the girls side, this is also a chance for fans to see those stars whose teams may have grabbed a headline or Sean Grennan & two but might have been Anthony Duszczak overshadowed by others. Players like Pinelands’ Jake Hartman, a 1,000-point scorer who is headed to Bucknell to play football, or Red Bank Catholic’s Luke Oriolo, who helped the Caseys rebound from a five-win season to become a dangerous team again.
On the boys side, the graduation of Christian Brothers Academy’s Matt McMullen and J.P. Koury means a bit of an uncertain time for the Colts, whose head coach, Geoff Billet, is in the running for the Monmouth University job. McMullen and Koury accounted for nearly all of the offense this season and there is not necessarily that heir apparent star at CBA like usual, so next season could be one of transition for the perennial power, which won the last two SCT titles before falling to Point Beach in the quarterfinals this season. Speaking of Point Beach, this game marks the end of the brilliant high school career of Jarelle Reischel, who took the Garnet Gulls to heights they had not enjoyed since the 1960s. The story of the kid who transferred from Frankfurt, Germany, to the smallest public school in Ocean County will write a new chapter as he heads off to Rice University after helping put Point Beach basketball back on the map. Same goes for Rumson’s Kevin Alter, the dynamo point guard who helped make the Bulldogs into a team that reached its first SCT final this season after having never advanced past the quarterfinals. Jackson Memorial senior Connor Saker played a similar role, helping to take his team to an NJSIAA sectional final, a place it had not seen since 1971. Then there’s
Luke Oriolo
While many great high school careers will come to an end on both sides, the toughest part for the players may be to know that it will never be like this again. The camaraderie in the locker room, those long hours of practice, alternately getting yelled at and supported by coaches, hearing the roar of a crowd made up of the people who live in your town – it can’t be replicated.
However, with every class leaving, that means there is another one on the way, waiting to make its mark and create its own era of Shore Conference basketball. Many of them will be on display in the inaugural Futures Games featuring the top eighth-grade talent in Monmouth and Ocean counties. After surveying the tremendous accomplishments of this season’s group of seniors on the boys and girls side, all I have to say for those eighth-graders is work hard because there is a lot to live up to if you ever want to be compared with this class.
