PlAyErS TO WATCH Elliot Bell, Jr., G. Jackson Memorial Already a standout on-ball defender, Bell will see more responsibility as an offensive facilitator with Andrew Papis graduating.

Tim O’Shea, Sr., G, Brick Memorial O’Shea hit some big shots during the Mustangs’ WOBM runner-up performance and had some noteworthy scoring outings as a junior. Brick Memorial is looking for scoring, so O’Shea is a good place to start.

Bill Wrightson, Jr., C, TR North The 6-foot-8 junior has a lot of potential to excel in a relatively young division for a particularly young Toms River North team. If he can, the Mariners will be a sleeper to win the division.

Brandon McDonnell, Jr., G/F, Jackson Mem. Bergstrom can score in a number of ways, but While he lacks his brother Jimmy’s size and length, Brandon McDonnell is an advanced scorer for his age and already has a great feel for how to get his silky smooth shot off against attentive defenses. He’s going to score a lot this year.

Anthony Carrington, Sr., G, TR North Carrington returns to Toms River North after contributing to Lakewood’s Central Jersey Group III championship last season. The senior showed a lot of promise as a sophomore on the Mariners and now that he is back in A South and healthy, he could be in line for a nice season.

BrEAkOuT PlAyErS TO WATCH Luke Sheehan, Sr., G/F, Southern Zach Liguori, Jr., G/F, Toms River South Connor Saker, Sr., F, Jackson Memorial Nolan Edwards, Sr., G, Brick Memorial Alex Levchenko, Jr., G, Toms River North

All Shore Media Sports Review Winter Preview candidate to lead the Mariners in scoring, but the player to keep an eye on is 6-foot-8 center Bill Wrightson. Not only does Wrightson have the size to attract attention, but he has enough skill to be a dominant scorer on the low block in A South. With a more mature Wrightson and a healthy Carrington – who broke his leg during the 2009 football season – the Mariners have some a lot of potential production. Throw in junior Alex Levchenko, another possible top scoring option, and Toms River North might have the talent to climb back toward the top of the division.

The Sleepers SOuTHeRN is the defending Class A South champion, which a lot of people might forget because of Jackson Memorial’s WOBM Tournament championship and two wins over the Rams last year. It could be even harder to remember Southern’s success of last year because so much has changed since last season. First-year coach Eric Fierro takes over for Jeff Reilly and will be without Ray Darnell, a senior center who transferred to a school in Indiana after originally transferring to Point Pleasant Beach. Without Darnell and graduated swingman Matt Vereb, senior Luke Sheehan becomes the focal point of the Rams. Sheehan is an athletic player who came off the bench last season and if he has a big season, the Rams could make a run at a second straight division title.

www.allshoremedia.com

T.J. Bellissimo returns at point guard and like Bell on Jackson, he is a thirdyear varsity player who brings experience to an important position on the court. He has been almost exclusively a distributor in each of his first two seasons, but with so much scoring moving on, he may look for his shot more. TOMS RiVeR SOuTH will try to replace one of the top duos in A South from a year ago in Rob Whitfield and Tyler Kapp. The Indians have a good collection of athletes, but Whitfield was the best ball-handler on the team and Kapp was the tallest player. Without the explosiveness of Whitfield and size of Kapp, Toms River South will rely on athletic wing players like Zach Liguori, Steve Petrosino, Kyle Perry and Elijah Dupree. Liguori and Dupree are both juniors and if both continue to develop this season, the Indians may not only have a nice core for this season, but they will be set up well for 2011-12. TOMS RiVeR eAST takes the biggest scoring hit, losing dynamic guard Richie Suhr and quality forwards Alex Bergstrom and Justin Sampson. The Raiders will turn to seniors Bob Varga, Joe Clarizio and Vinny Arminio to pick up the production, as well as contribute defensively for a team that will have to win low-scoring games. Varga and Clarizio are both good athletes, with Clarizio running the point and Varga having some ability to hit the outside shot.

PlAyErS TO WATCH Ryan Keegan, Sr., G, Howell The Rebels lost some athleticism and scoring from last season’s team, but they boast the best returning point guard from a year ago in Keegan, who will help the new starters fit in right off the bat.

J.P. Koury, Sr., G/F, CBA The senior swingman and Bentley College recruit had a breakout season as a junior, playing his best in the later rounds of the Shore Conference Tournament, as well as CBA’s showdown with St. Anthony in late January.

Shilique Calhoun, Sr., F/C, Middletown North Calhoun – who is still weighing Division I football scholarship offers – had some difficulties staying on the court for various reasons last year, but coach Mike Iasparro says his standout center is as focused and committed as he has ever been. That could be a scary thought for the rest of A North.

Matt McMullen, Sr., F, CBA The Colts senior has already committed to Colgate University and has two Shore Conference Tournament Championships as a starter for CBA, but McMullen and his team are in search of that elusive NJSIAA Non-Public A championship.

Jason Huelbig, Jr., G/F, Middletown North While the 6-foot-4 swingman had some off nights at times last season, that he had so many big ones while starting as a sophomore is a testament to his potential, which he should be able to fully tap into this season.

Like many other quality teams around the state, the Middletown North boys basketball team will go into every game believing it will win, according to head coach Mike Iasparro. Unfortunately for the Lions, they play in a division with a team that actually does win every game, at least within the Shore Conference.

Iasparro said of Calhoun. “He had a great summer playing basketball and in fact, he even got some offers to go play in college. But he knows this is his last year playing basketball, and he wants to make the most of it playing with these guys. They’ve played together for a long time, and they genuinely like each other.”

All Shore Media Sports Review Winter Preview Senior Brian Cali has also had a strong preseason and will get a chance to fill in as a starter, while junior Eric Shaw will likely be a sixth man after giving CBA some quality minutes off the bench as a sophomore last year.

The Contenders: As far as talent goes, Middletown North is clear favorite to challenge CBA and win the public division title, but because the Lions lack postseason experience and are coming off of an 8-13 season, a handful of A North teams could emerge as top teams. HOWeLL returns Ryan Keegan and Kendall Simmons to the starting lineup this season after both players made their mark in A North as juniors on a Rebels team that, despite going only 12-13, upset Trenton in the first round of the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group IV Tournament as a No. 15 seed. Keegan is one of the top point guards in the area, evidenced by his 16-plus points to go with three steals per game as a junior last season. Simmons, meanwhile, is a guard in height and a power-forward in performance and showed at times last year that he could be a top scoring option. If the Rebels can make up for the loss in athleticism that left with graduates Rob Handy and Gabe Cheavers, they have the production to make a run at the public title. FReeHOLD TOWNSHiP fell out of the Class A North race early on last year, which is an unexpected development based on the Patriots’ recent success. Despite a good dose of senior talent on opening day, Freehold Township fell on hard times because of injuries, and the focus turned to the future at an early point of the season. Fortunately, there is light at the end of the tunnel thanks to a strong finish to the season by junior guard Casey Skievaski, who will lead a hungry young Patriots team into the season as a potential sleeper in A North. MiDDLeTOWN SOuTH is coming off of its best three-year run in quite some time, but the bitter end to the 2009-10 season – an NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III first-round loss to Hopewell Valley – may have been the beginning of a step back for the Eagles unless this year’s group can embrace the underdog role. Will Siegfried returns after serving as a physical presence in the paint as a junior, but will have to carry much more of the load for Middletown South to compete. The Eagles may have a surprise or two in them, but the talent level is not as striking as it was a year ago when Middletown South took the public division crown for a second straight year. MARLBORO was the sleeper of the 2009-10 season in Class A North behind a strong senior class led by Andrew Goldstein. With that class moving on, only senior Alec Loeb returns to a Mustangs team that will essentially have to start from scratch this season. While the Mustangs won’t be pushovers, they won’t be a sleeper this season, both because they shed that title last year and because they don’t seem to have the personnel. That leaves MANALAPAN as the team to keep an eye on as a potential surprise. The Braves went a respectable 5-9 in Class A North last season while relying on only one senior – Michael Sette – for significant contribution and leaning on a group of juniors and sophomores. That group returns largely intact, led by senior Greg Baker, senior baseball standouts Kyle Rubbinaccio and Nick Krieger, and sophomore Anthony Firkser, who should see his role increase after a taste of the varsity level last year.

Senior Sterry Codrington is another athletic senior who also was a football standout at quarterback, and forward Chris Torre is another key returner. This team has talent, so it will be up for it to find its leaders and scorers after graduating Garcia and McKenzie. LONg BRANCH should also be in the thick of the race under head coach Joe Whalen, as the Green Wave bring back senior forward Nate Bolden as well as sophomore point guard Dwight Clark, who saw time as a freshman. Last season, this team pounded opponents on the offensive glass but was very streaky from the perimeter. MONMOuTH RegiONAL has a new head coach in former assistant Quinton Schwartz, who replaces veteran coach Larry Cirignano, who stepped down after the season. The Falcons lose all-time leading scorer Neil Thompson, forward Brent Shelton and 3-point bomber Cameron Lee to graduation, which is a lot of offensive firepower to replace. Senior forward Loren Jackson and guards Barry Phoenix and D.J. Coles will have to help replace that scoring. ReD BANk CATHOLiC moves into the division from Class A Central and is a bit of an unknown under second-year head coach Devitt Gillroy. Senior guard Luke Oriolo is a top returner along with a pair of football standouts, seniors Andrew Casten and Jack Tabb. OCeAN was a sleeper in this division last season, but nearly its entire lineup has graduated, with senior guard Michael Acquaro, who showed the potential to be a big scorer at times last season, as their main returning player.

Kevin Furlong, Sr., G, Raritan Furlong put up some gaudy numbers down the stretch last season and while Mike Aaman will garner most of the attention because of his size and commitment to Wagner College, Furlong might be the Rockets’ most dynamic offensive weapon.

Mike Aaman, Jr., C, Raritan A true center is hard to find at any level and at the high school level, Aaman is the definition of a true center. Even more rare is a true center who can lead a team in statistical production, and Aaman has a chance to do that for the next two seasons.

Mike Balkovic, Sr., F, St. John Vianney A shoulder injury suffered in the preseason set Balkovic back by a month and his play was up and down once he returned to play with scoring guard Ishaq Pitt. Now that he’s healthy, he will get the ball more and with his size, skill and athleticism, Balkovic will produce.

Seph Williams, Jr., G, Red Bank Williams was Red Bank’s second leading scorer last season as a sophomore, but there was Stephen Frost – a 1,000 point scorer for the Bucs – drawing a lot of attention on the defensive end. Even if Williams finds it harder to get to the rim, he can do a lot on both ends of the floor.

Donnelly came off the bench as a sophomore to play significant minutes and if he can become a more consistent producer as a starter, the Bulldogs can again surprise some teams throughout the conference. “We want teams to adjust to our strengths,” Champeau said. “That’s our philosophy, and it worked for us last year. We’re not going to change how we play based on what other teams are doing. We’re going to make them have to adjust.” RaRitan will counter with a team based on size that starts with junior center Mike Aaman. The 6-foot-8 Aaman caught fire at the end of his sophomore year and rode that run, plus a strong summer, to a host of scholarship offers before giving a verbal commitment to Wagner College and coach Danny Hurley. replace Stephen Frost’s 20 points per game, it will be a player in A Central.

Senior guards Kevin Furlong and Tim Pizanie, while perimeter players, have good size at their positions and add to the element of size. Furlong is one of the top point guards in the Shore Conference and while he was consistently good in his junior season, he was occasionally great, even posting a tripledouble during a game last season. Pizanie, meanwhile, is the sharp-shooter on the team and can score from a lot of different spots on the floor.

Six-foot-7 senior forward Mike Balkovic is the heart of the Lancers and will likely be a candidate to average a doubledouble after he did it two years ago as a sophomore. Balkovic battled a should injury for much of last year, but a clean bill of health should help him, as well as senior center Ryan Gille, who will be an anchor on the low block for St. John Vianney.

Raritan dropped both of its games against Rumson last year, but the Rockets have a more prodigious group of returning players back that are intent on bouncing back after a crushing loss to Shabazz in the Central Jersey Group III quarterfinals. Raritan had a double-digit fourth quarter lead in that game, but lost in overtime after Aaman fouled out of the game.

The Contenders: ReD BANk and ST. JOHN ViANNey also have teams that can compete for a division title, with Red Bank boasting an athletic, albeit undersized, lineup, while the Lancers have the size to battle Raritan. The Bucs return three key contributors from a solid team in swingman Seph Williams, point guard Mike Puryear and athletic forward Lamar Hutchinson, and also have a handful of role players back to help out. As far as this year goes, the Huskies will have some experience to help the younger players ease into the fold, led by Keenan Johnson, Corey Soanes, Kyle Rean and Brian Dailey. SHORe RegiONAL, meanwhile, returns a quality point guard in senior Zach Hoffman and a handful of key players around him that should make the Blue Devils a dangerous team that could make a run toward the top

Senior center Andrew Van Schaack returns as one of the biggest post players in the division after battling injuries last season, and guards Brandon Carroll, Cliff Clark, Mark Kukoda and Andrew Kurtz also return with experience. By Scott Stump – Managing editor The Favorites With the creation of this division under the latest Shore Conference realignment, three old foes who have moved over from Class B South should fight it out once again for a championship, just in a different division. Leading the way is defending Class B South champion MONSigNOR DONOVAN, which brings back senior guard Sean Grennan, a Division I prospect and All Shore Media firstteamer a year ago, as well as senior forward Anthony Duszczak, one of the top returning big men in the Shore Conference. The main questions involve the supporting cast around that main duo of Grennan and Duszczak, but veteran head coach Mike Kearney and his staff always seems to find a way to mold new parts into a cohesive whole. Seniors Alex Lorenzo and Pat Rista return after seeing some significant minutes last season, and junior Andrew Gomez looks to be another contributor. Breathing right down Monsignor Donovan’s neck will be defending NJSIAA Central Jersey Group III champion LAkeWOOD, a proud program with a long history of winning that has become resurgent under head coach Randy Holmes. Six-foot-six senior swingman Jarrod Davis, a Division I prospect, leads the way for the Piners and looks to be one of the Shore Conference’s top five players this season. He can score off the dribble from the wing and has explosive leaping

The Contenders: MANASquAN moves into Class C Central after winning the Class A Central title last season with a seniorladen team under coach Andrew Bilodeau. The Warriors were hit hard by graduation, losing ASM first-team guard Matt Vadas and a host of others, so it will be up to the handful of returners and the newcomers to keep the winning going.

kEy FACT Howell had five District 21 champions last season, all of whom were seniors.

Howell Even though the Rebels graduated six district medal winners and a group of seniors that accounted for over 200 wins last season alone, Howell has earned the benefit of the doubt as one of the Shore Conference's most consistent programs.

The Colts have all the pieces in place to rebound from a 6-15 season in 2009-2010 to be competitive in Class A North and possibly push for a spot in the top 10. Heavyweight Sean Herlihy was the only wrestler with double-digit wins to graduate, and CBA returns seven wrestlers who won at least 10 bouts a season ago. Junior Vin Favia leads the way after going 31-5 as a junior and placing third in Region VI at 152 pounds. Juniors Mike Matlaga (135) and Hayden Hyrmack (189) each won 19 bouts last season and should improve on those marks, while junior Chris Brower returns after missing all of last season. Brower was a District 22 medalist as a freshman. Seniors Frank Lurch, Ramon Torres and Mike Crocitto provide experience and depth, while freshmen Erik Beshada (103) and Christian Casselli (112) will look to bolster the bottom of the lineup. In his fifth season, head coach Mike Tomaino will have some great assistants behind him with former local stars Andrew Skove, Jimmy Speidel, Russ Whit and Dave Santamaria in the room.

Volume-2 Issue-23 12/20/10 Page 18

Senior Mike Shaughnessy returns with 79 career wins after placing second in Region VI at 130 pounds. The lower half of the lineup also features sophomore Ben Esposito (17-14) and junior Cole Cameron (14 wins in 2009-2010).

Howell senior Mike Shaughnessy

Freehold Twp. The Patriots were 8-20 last season, and it is going to be tough to improve on that record after graduating state medalist Ken Brophy and District 21 medalist Phil Caracappa. Junior Rocco Hernandez is the returning wins leader with 15, and sophomore Matt Caracappa had 14 at 103 pounds. Freehold Township will need wrestlers like Nick Fontana (9-14), Connor West (11-9), Carmine Romano (11-12), John Baumann (9-13) and Gary Figueroa (9-8) to continue to improve in order to climb the ranks in A North and the Shore Conference.

FOr ExTENDED TEAM PrEVIEWS & INFO

Junior Zach Bohm is slated to wrestle at 152 pounds after going 21-12 and placing third in District 21 last season. Sophomore Ashanti Maurice could be in for a solid season after going 6-4 in limited action as a freshman. Senior heavyweight Jake Conover suffered an injury during football season and will be out for an extended period of time. Cody Kirk, Frank Lino, Matt Sulkowski and John Hlava might not be household names, but don't be surprised if they turn in solid seasons for the Rebels in the top half of their lineup.

Manalapan Senior Reggie Hodge-Grant had 25 wins last season, and sophomore Mike Aronson was a 23-match winner as a freshman, but the Braves will have to find away to replace eight wrestlers that graduated after winning at least 13 bouts last season.

GO TO

The lower half of the lineup features Aronson at 130 pounds and senior Steve DiMaggio (1010) at 119 pounds. Plenty of freshmen and sophomores will be in the mix from 103-140 pounds, including newcomer Grant Palpin at 103 pounds. Hodge-Grant leads the upperweight contingent with junior Geoff Kelman (11 wins last season) at 160 pounds and sophomore John Appice, who won 18 bouts as a freshman 189-pounder, at heavyweight.

Marlboro

In the past, Marlboro has had the occasional superstar advance deep into the state tournament, but it doesn't appear the Mustangs have ever been as balanced as they are this season. The Mustangs have all the makings of a Top 10 team after going 16-6 last season, winning the Manchester Hawk Classic and returning a host of experienced talent this season. The bottom half of the lineup should be the strength of the team with five wrestlers who won 20plus bouts last season. Senior James Stewart (27-8) should be at 103 with Colts Neck transfer Anthony Anzalone (26-6) at 112. Senior Vinnie Leone (26-6) will be at 119, senior Adam Ramadan (22-3) is at 125 and sophomore Andrew Doukas (23-7) is slated to wrestle at 135. Junior Tyler Kugler was 11-9 a season ago, and should be in the mix somewhere down low, as well. Also look out for junior Zach Goldrosen (18-12) at 140 pounds. Marlboro doesn't have the same kind of firepower up top, but boasts 31-win senior heavyweight Mitch Seigel. Howell has been the king of A North in recent years, but Marlboro could represent a big challenge this season.

Middletown North

The Eagles have made huge strides lately with a second-place finish in Class A North, a third-place finish in District 22 and a trip to the NJSIAA sectional semifinals. Despite graduating four 20-match winners, Middletown South is hoping to continue its upward trend.

All Shore Media Sports Review Winter Preview Junior Nick Herring is back after going 30-8 and placing first in District 22 and third in Region VI at 130 pounds. Senior Manny Blasco is a three-time district medalist and was 23-11 at 140 pounds last season, and should be a major presence in the middle of the lineup. Sophomore Drew Blasco (103) and junior Tim Cody (112) each won District 22 medals and should lead the lower portion of the lineup. Up top, the Eagles have a pair of experienced seniors in Taylor Rogers and Kyle Bunge.

Middletown South

The youth movement is on at Middletown North after the Lions lost a combined 142 wins to graduation, including 41 by state medalist Brandon Vorrius. Region medalist Zach Torchia (29-9) does return and looks to be slotted in at 125 pounds. Senior Rob Mercantante (215) provides some experience up top with 19 wins last season, but the remainder of the lineup has seen limited action. The Lions look to have four freshmen seeing significant time, including Brandon Distualo at heavyweight.

C Central continued from page 17 Senior guard Nick Lustrino was an effective 3-point sniper last season but may have to create his own shot a little more this year without Vadas and others to draw all of the defensive attention. Senior forward Ryan Casey is a solid inside and outside player who does the little things well, and 6-foot-4 sophomore Jimmy Walsh will be counted on to play a much bigger role after seeing minutes as a freshman on a loaded team last season. Walsh is more of a finesse player than a banger, and he has a nice touch from 15 feet. If he can add a dribble drive game to his jumper, he could be one of the more improved players in the division. Manasquan’s rival, WALL, comes over from Class B North and is led by senior guard Kyle Janeczek. He decided to play football for the first and only time in high

Volume-2 Issue-23 12/20/10 Page 19 school this season and had an outstanding season as a wide receiver, so it remains to be seen if he has to shake some rust off in the early going. He can put the ball on the floor and score in traffic. Wall will also have to big bodies up front in senior center Brandon Walsh and junior forward Derek Gardner. Their ability to create second shots and discourage opponents from driving into the lane will be crucial to making a move up in the standings under head coach Michael Puorro. Finally, the only way to go is up for JACkSON LiBeRTy, which finished 0-22 last season while playing in Class B South. Now the Lions are in an even harder division, so it won’t be easy to dig out of the hole. Leading the way is senior Frank Mendes along with sophomore guard Ahmed Foster and juniors Ahmed Shalabi and Bobby Brown.

Juniors Austin Guarino and Dylan Hyland, ad seniors Tom Colella and Brock Gomez will be in the bottom half of the lineup, while the top half of the Hornets team features most of the experience. Senior Alex Reidy is another won to watch after winning 18 matches as a junior. The Hornets balanced lineup will give them a better shot to move up the ranks in Class A Central.

Matawan

It was a banner year for the Huskies in 2009-2010 as they captured the Class A Central division title for the first time and had great success in the individual tournaments. Defending their division title will be difficult, however, after graduating all-time wins leader Johnny Short, 100match winner Jordan Long and key seniors Nick Proto, Chris Carillo, Charlie Cook and Jimmy Alvarez. Jess Monzo takes over for Andy Lasko as the head coach after being an assistant last season. Lasko is still on the staff as an assistant. The star power may be gone, but the Huskies should still have a solid, balanced lineup led by senior Zeke Vega, who racked up 23 wins at 140 pounds last season. Sophomore Glenn Cross won 17 matches as a freshman and could make a big jump this season. Senior Andre Hodge picked up 19 wins at 215 last season. Down low, juniors Timmy Birch and Hakan Yuksel won 14 and 16 matches, respectively, while seniors Patrick O'Donnell and Tommy Dillon approached 20 wins as juniors. Matawan might not be as talented on paper, but the expectations will still be there for the program to continue to improve and show last year was no fluke.

raritan

The Rockets had an up-and-down campaign last season, but closed strong by

winning 10 of their final 11 matches and sending nine wrestlers to the Region VI tournament. After dropping the division title to Matawan, Raritan will be looking to win back its usual place atop the division and among the best teams in the Shore Conference. The lineup is solid from top to bottom and a couple of heavy hitters may even develop as the season goes on. Junior Matt Lindo went 26-9 as a sophomore and gives the Rockets a strong presence at 103 pounds. Junior Nick Ligouri at 125 pounds and sophomore Jason Bohal at 130 are in position for breakout seasons, while junior Devin Holmes quietly won 14 matches last season. Up top, seniors Joe Masi (24-10) and Ryan Lynch (28-7) will be at 160 and 171 pounds, respectively. The Rockets are always well-coached under Rob Nucci and his staff, and this hardworking group could be in for big things this season.

red Bank regional

District 22 medalist Rocky Leiner (125) graduated along with 22-match winner John Lazo and Paul Muolo, Connor Stambaugh and George Balanikis, all of whom won over 10 matches. The Bucs will have to rely on a lineup that has a solid amount of seniors with experience to improve on their 7-13 record from last season. Sophomore Ben Swanson returns after winning 20 matches last season, and fellow sophomore Dillon Stambaugh will also be leaned on after a 16-win season as a freshman. Wrestlers like Justin Ballard, Cliff O'Malley and Zach Adams could all improve on their win totals from last season to give the Bucs a solid top half of the lineup. Even though there isn't a ton of experience for Red Bank, the younger wrestlers seem to have good potential, which is a promising sign.

rumson

Despite losing District 22 medalist Nick Carducci to graduation, the Bulldogs have some experience returning as they hope to make a jump in A Central. Senior Nick Hodgkiss is the returning wins leader with 16 at 152 pounds. Joining him among the

upperweights are seniors Tommy Scheffer (15-10, 160) and junior Jay Avino (12 wins, 189). Senior Jake Scire wrestled just 13 matches at 130 pounds last season, but went 12-1 and has 51 career wins. The bottom portion of the lineup is young with nine underclassmen, so the future could be bright for Rumson.

Shore regional

The Blue Devils have battled with Point Beach for the Class B Central title for several years and have captured three division titles, but will move up a division to A Central this season. The Blue Devils have five wrestlers returning who won at least 14 matches last season, but the big hitter is senior Luke Bush. The 145-pounder was 37-4 as a junior and just missed out on a trip to Atlantic City with a fourth-place finish in the Region VI Tournament. Along with Bush, the top half of the lineup also includes senior Kevin Chapman at 171, who was 27-7 last season. The lower portion of the lineup has sophomore Tommy Welsh (14 wins) at 112, junior Derek Arnette (22-13) at 130 and senior Connor Arnette (16 wins) at 135. Sophomore Nick Salles missed all of 2010 with an injury, and could be a factor at 152 pounds. Freshman Sam Koenig at 130 pounds is also a wrestler to keep an eye on.

St. John Vianney

Head coach Pat Smith has put together a very good coaching staff that features former Sayreville head coach John Denuto and several former local champions, and Smith will also have a great incoming freshman class, so it will be very interesting to see what the Lancers can do in 2011. The bottom of the lineup is led by senior Rob Cigna (125), who went 27-4 last season. Junior Nick Cioffi (15-4, 135) and sophomores Tim Duffy (17-8, 119) and Sean Alwell (10 wins, 112) give the Lancers experience, and freshmen Nick Barrett and Terrence Davis could add some extra firepower to an already solid group. Barrett was an eighth grade champ in Middlesex County and Davis was a two-time National High School Coaches Association national runner-up. From 145 pounds and up, the Lancers have an equal mix of youth and experience. Senior Anthony Piccione was 11-11 last season and a boost in his record would be big for the team at 145 pounds. Sophomore Anthony Ferraro could make a big jump at 160 pounds after going 19-5 as a freshman. Speaking of freshmen, Matt Falco and Nate Litawsky were both medalists in the intermediate school state tournament, and will wrestle at 152 and 171 pounds, respectively.

kEy FACT Toms River South's last Shore Conference Tournament title came in 1978, the final of four straight SCT titles.

The names certainly stand out: Mike Morales, Billy Miller, Jake Vescovi, to name a few, but Brick Memorial is hoping it won't be lamenting its losses all season in the brutal A South division. Senior DJ Santos leads the way at 135 pounds after compiling a 28-6 record last season. He enters with 85 career wins and three District 23 championships. He will anchor a lower portion of the lineup that looks to be the Mustangs' strength. Along with Santos are junior Sean Stephenson at 112 or 119 pounds and junior Evan Berti at 140 or 145 pounds. A pair of freshmen could have a huge impact for Brick Memorial as middle school state champ Joe Ghione and middle school state place-winner Rob Triano should start at 103 and 130 pounds, respectively. Griffin Carney is another freshman who should see time in the lower half of the lineup. Up top, the Mustangs will lean on the sophomore tandem of Anthony Miller and Matt Moore. Miller was just 13-7 as a freshman, but won a district title at 160 pounds. Moore was 14-9 and gained a huge amount of experience as a frosh. The Mustangs also got a transfer from South Brunswick in the form of senior Fabian Jackson, who was 14-4 for the Vikings as a junior.

Jackson Memorial Plain and simple, the Jaguars are loaded. Jackson once again boasts a dominating lineup and will be in contention for an NJSIAA Group IV title and a Shore Conference championship.

Volume-2 Issue-23 12/20/10 Page 22

Standouts BJ Young and Devin Biscaha, along with solid program wrestlers Matt Kimball and Drew Murphy, left via graduation, but talent up and down the lineup should make those losses a lot easier to handle. The Jags always seem to have a rugged lower-weight group, and this year will be no different. Sophomore Brian Hamann, who was fourth in the state at 103 last season, joins senior Mike Shupin, sophomore Alec Huxford, sophomore Spencer Young, juniors Brad and Randy Royle, and senior Jimmy Kelly to form a formidable group from 103-140 pounds. Factor in senior Joe Bartolini, who was 21-7 last year before transferring from Jackson Liberty, and the Jaguars will be giving teams fits down low all season.

Mike Case (27-5), Rich Tieto (18-10) and Kevin Westburg (17-11) were lost to graduation, but the Rams have a ton of talent back and some incoming freshmen who can make an impact. It all looks like it will add up to another strong year for Southern.

Down low, the senior duo of Kyle Casaletto and Bubba Lanno will lead the way. Lanno was 28-7 last season and has 63 wins for his career. He is a three-time district medalist and was a Region VI runner-up last season. Casaletto, meanwhile, was 29-3 on his way to a second Region VI title and a secondIt doesn't place finish in the get much state at 112 easier up top pounds. as senior Sophomore Doug Trevor Mooney, a Hamann, a transfer from Region VI Pinelands, adds champ, and even more junior Dallas firepower to a Winston will talented group. lead an upperLook for a solid weight season from Southern senior Kyle Casaletto contingent junior Matt that also Yostpile, who came up with some big features one of the best heavyweights in the performances last season in spot duty. Toms river South

In a division as loaded as A South, not everyone can be at the top. It looks like it could be an uphill climb all season for the Raiders after graduating three 30-match winners in Bryan Sternlieb, John Clark and Anthony Sherman, and 20-match winner John D'Ambrosio.

After some very lean years and, more recently, some encouraging progress, Toms River South looks like it’s ready to contend for multiple championships in 2011. After going 14-5 and advancing to the South Jersey Group III final, the Indians are looking to jump into the Shore Conference's elite behind a balanced and talented lineup.

Toms River East returns senior Johnny Resto (20-9) and sophomore Rich Lewis (21-14) in the lower half of the lineup, but no other wrestler approached 20 wins last season and only one, sophomore Vincenzo Rotella, won as many as 10 matches. Dan Wasilick is a senior who won nine matches last season, and an increase in that column would no doubt be a big boost to the Raiders and head coach Warren Reid, who will be in his 32nd season at Toms River East.

The Mariners have a new coach in Bill Wilbert and have to find a way to navigate around losing their top three wrestlers to graduation.

The sophomore class for the Indians has a chance to be special, and several of those wrestlers make up the lower half of the lineup. Sophomore Kevin Corrigan will be at 112 pounds after going 26-2 as a freshman. An illness knocked him out of the district tournament, so he's been burning to redeem himself for almost a year. Sophomore BJ Clagon came on strong at the end of last season and finished with 34 wins and a seventh-place medal in the state tournament. Factor in senior Alan Manzano, a District 24 champ, sophomores Garrett Applegate and Zach Maikisch, and freshmen Brandon Murray and Warren Claggett, and the Indians have a rock-solid lower group.

Without Kyle McNulty, Ken Dougherty and Mike Barone, Toms River North will have a tough time in the rugged A South division as it returns just one wrestler – senior Dan Rodriguez – who won over 10 matches last season. There are a lot of juniors on the roster and some room for growth, but A South usually doesn't allow a team to regroup at its own pace.

Senior Kyle Kenny may be one of the most underrated wrestlers in the Shore, and he will be at 152/160 pounds after going 29-3 last season. Senior Evan Tarver is coming off a 26-8 season and will be at 215. Junior Nick Osborn looks poised for a big year after winning 12 matches as a sophomore. The Indians have a very tough schedule, as usual, but 2011 could be the year Toms River South gets its revenge on the rest of A South.

By Scott Stump – Managing editor t’s the most fun part of the preseason – trying to figure out how a season will turn out, which teams will be the last ones standing, and which players will deliver on the hype or emerge from the shadows to become well-known names in the Shore Conference.

This season is no different, with a pair of perennial powers sitting atop the landscape on the boys and girls basketball side in the Shore, and plenty of hungry contenders ready to knock them off. The talent level on the girls side is arguably the best it has ever been in this area, with a record 16 seniors having signed National Letters of Intent to continue their careers at Division I programs. There is no shortage of star power on the boys side either, with players like Point Beach’s Jarelle Reischel, Christian Brothers Academy’s Matt McMullen, Monsignor Donovan’s Sean Grennan, Middletown North’s Shilique Calhoun and Lakewood’s Jarrod Davis boasting Division I talent in the senior class. With that said, let’s take a look at some of the plotlines to this upcoming season:

B OYS

C an Lakewood take the next step?

C an anyone end

The Piners won an NJSIAA sectional championship last season for the first time since the heyday of Denver Nuggets guard J.R. Smith in the early 2000s, and now they will try to take home the overall Group II crown with a team that returns nearly its entire lineup from last season.

“The Streak’’ by CBA? The Colts have won 43 straight games against Shore Conference competition, dating back to the 2007-08 season, bringing home two straight Shore Conference Tournament titles in the process. Every season there is a buzzed-about team in Class A North that is supposed to make a run at CBA, and this season it’s Middletown North, which had a strong summer and enters with an experienced, deep team. However, the Lions would have to make a big leap after being a middle-of-the-pack team CBA's Matt McMullen in the division last season. They also are facing a CBA team with veterans like senior forward Matt McMullen and senior guard J.P. Koury that has played in plenty of big games and is battle-tested, whereas Middletown North is not. CBA is used to having to deal with major expectations, but it remains to be seen how this Middletown North group responds. Will it be like the Freehold Township team of 2006-07 that took a quantum leap forward and won the SCT, or like many other teams that have wilted under the spotlight in recent seasons? As for the rest of the schedule for the Colts, a nondivisional game against nemesis Neptune on Jan. 8 could be the biggest regular-season threat to the streak, and if CBA gets through that, it will most likely only be another run in the SCT away from extending it to more than three seasons.

Lakewood started slowly last season but recovered to get a piece of the Class B South public title and then after an early exit in the Shore Conference Tournament, put together a run to the Central Jersey Group III championship. With high-scoring seniors and Division I prospects Jarrod Davis and Anthony Walker returning along with senior point guard Willie Hawkins, dynamic junior Jameer Jones, rising sophomore standout Tyrice Beverette and senior big man DaQuan Kenney, the pieces are in place under head coach Randy Holmes.

have been transplanted to that division and even though Manasquan lost a lot to graduation, it is usually also a threat. I think that could be a fun three- or four-team race. Watching Neptune and Colts Neck square off in Class B North, and Point Beach and Asbury Park do battle in Class B Central also should be exciting. Rumson's Kevin Alter OK, we know all the big names coming back in the Shore. Who are some others to watch?

Rumson fan favorite Kevin Alter, a The Piners entered last season with senior point guard, has the potential to plenty of hype and got caught up in it break into the upper echelon of guards early on, so clearly it’s as much this season, but it will have to wait, as he mental as it is physical with this may miss up to a month with an team. They will face abdominal injury. some old foes, Lakewood's Jarrod Davis Monsignor Donovan Kieran Hughes could be the latest and Point Boro, ascending Christian Brothers Academy star and is among others, in the somewhat in the mold of senior standout J.P. Koury. newly created Middletown North’s Jason Huelbig is a high riser who Class C Central throws down some wicked dunks, so he may be a division. household name sooner than later if the Lions can deliver on their promise. It pretty much comes down to whether Davis and Walker in particular can raise their games in big spots in the postseason tournaments. They also are competing in a different state bracket, South Jersey Group II, so they will have to deal with opponents like Collingswood, Willingboro, Point Boro, Buena, Haddon Heights, Middle Township, Camden, Pleasantville and others. The Piners have the talent to do it, but winning in tournaments is all about consistent play from night to night, and that will be Lakewood’s main challenge.

The main issue will be guard play, namely replacing hat is the best graduated point guard Roy Mabrey, one of the most divisional race? clutch players in the Shore Conference in the last two seasons. Pt. Beach's Jarelle Reischel While CBA-Middletown North has Eric Shaw should step up as an some potential in Class A North, a lot of teams improved scorer with a good long-range game this have been hyped against CBA before and not season, but point guard play could be the difference gotten it done, so I’m liking Class C Central. between CBA reasserting its superiority or being dragged Lakewood, Point Boro and Monsignor Donovan back to the pack after a dominant stretch.

W

Raritan senior point guard Kevin Furlong may be better known as a football player, but he will have to have a big season for the Rockets to cement themselves as a Top 10 team. Watch for Freehold senior guard Jesse Hunt to take the leap from role player to standout after the graduation of Lance McKenzie and Christian Garcia. I also think Point Boro junior point guard Shaun Cooke could rise in the ranks of Shore Conference guards if he can stay healthy and avoid a nagging ankle injury that has plagued him. Junior forward/center Josh Jenkins on Neptune could become a force if he can harness his raw athletic gifts and become a finisher on the break and a menace in the middle on defense. A player on a sleeper team to watch is Red Bank Catholic senior guard Luke Oriolo, who will try to lead a Caseys resurgence after several seasons in the wilderness. Also, Jackson Memorial long-range gunner Brandon McDonnell could be poised to break into the spotlight.

Colts Neck Graduation saw Colts Neck lose two-time District 21 medalist Ryan King, 18-win heavyweight Mike Heyer and 20-win middleweight Matt Papp, but the big blows came over the summer with a pair of transfers. Senior Tyler Fraley transferred to Wyoming Seminary in Pennsylvania, a national powerhouse prep school, and senior Anthony Anzalone transferred to Marlboro. Anzalone was 26-6 at 112 pounds while Fraley was 37-1 and finished second in the state at 103 pounds. The Cougars and head coach Bob Seidel will try to put the pieces back together starting with a pair of promising lowerweights. Sophomore Peter Ottaviano was 24-4 as a freshman with 11 pins and senior Alex Brown turned in a 22-7 record as a junior. Junior Brandon Russo is the only other wrestler with much experience down low, as he won 14 matches as a sophomore. Sophomore Frank Lefkowitz is the returning wins leader among the upperweights, having won nine as a frosh at 189 pounds.

Volume-2 Issue-23 12/20/10 Page 26

All three of Freehold's losses to graduation came from the upperweights, so there is some work to do up there. Senior Andrew Soulfleris won 13 matches as a junior, and an improvement up to around 20 wins would be a huge boost for the team. Head coach Matt Shepherd has a lot of seniors to fill the ranks from 152heavyweight, and a strong showing from that group could mean a big turnaround for Freehold following a 6-15 season.

Monmouth regional The Falcons lost a district medalist to graduation in Ronald Clearie, but retain one in senior Ryan Greenwood at heavyweight. Greenwood was 22-10 last season and placed third in District 23. Senior Nick Jordan was a 15-match winner at 152 while senior Scott Satcher won 12 matches at 189.

Long Branch senior Luis Filipe

long Branch

The good news is that Freehold graduated just three starters from last season's squad, but the bad news is that one of those was alltime wins leader Josh Davis and the other was 24-match winner David James.

This season might as well be titled “The Year After for Long Branch. The Green Wave graduated a historic senior class that led them to three straight Group II titles and the No. 1 ranking in New Jersey in 2009. One of the biggest story lines of the season will be to see how Long Branch does after losing nearly half of its lineup and nearly 800 career victories.

Without its hammer up top, Freehold will look to a balanced and experienced lineup as it hopes to move up the ranks in B North. Junior Thomas Nulty is the active wins leader with 47, and went 21-6 as a sophomore. He will be at 125 pounds ahead of his brother and senior 119-pounder, Brian Nulty (17-11). Senior Steve Bravo won 23 matches last year and will wrestle at 130 pounds. Throw in junior Zach Mostowsky at 135 pounds and the Colonials have a solid lower half.

Senior Luis Filipe is the returning wins leader after going 37-5 as a sophomore. Filipe just missed out on a trip to Atlantic City and is a legitimate stud in the middle of the lineup for the Green Wave. If he can keep his emotions in check, he can wrestle with anybody in the state. Also returning in the lower half of the lineup is junior Andrew Viera, senior Matt Eggie and sophomores Luke Balina and Nick George.

Freehold Boro

From 145 pounds and up, the Green Wave feature senior Ryan Festejo (158), sophomore Jake George (19-10) and seniors Jim Parnell and Paul Tracey. The talent is fairly spread throughout the lineup, and coach Dan George will have his team ready to go six minutes every match. Even though Long Branch lost a ton of talent, don't sleep on a program that has wrestled in some huge matches over the last four seasons and has one of the best feeder programs in the Shore.

In the lower half of the lineup, juniors Joe Panchak (103) and Dominick Cardella (119) won 13 and 16 matches, respectively, while junior Keone Osby picked up 11 wins as a sophomore.

Neptune Head coach Tom Jobes has been steadily building Neptune into a competitive team, and last season's 13-10 record was a good indicator the Scarlet Fliers are going in the right direction. The challenge this season will be to continue the upward trend despite graduating three 20-match winners. All-time wins leader Dan Staples, twotime district medalist CJ Pierce and 18match winner David Foster all left via graduation, but that hasn't left the program devoid of talent. Led by senior Phil Seidle, Neptune returns three 20-match winners and two more that won 15-plus. Seidle was 27-6 last season and will be at either 215 or heavyweight. Also in the top half of the lineup is senior Frank Rodriguez (16-11) at 160 pounds. The lower half of the lineup has a ton of youth with sophomores Isiah Haymon (2110), Karl Waldron (20-12), Nelcy Santiago, Tareeq Hamilton, Sakou Harris (16 wins), Quentin Rush and Jose Carabolo in the mix. It will be interesting to see how the senior leaders and talented sophomore class come together for a team that could open some eyes this season.

Ocean Ken Hoff's Spartans are always among the best teams in the Shore Conference, and with a large portion of the team returning from last season's 17-6 squad, Ocean is poised to regain its spot atop the division. Both halves of the lineup should be solid for Ocean, and down low the Spartans will be led by junior Seth Rubel at 135 and senior PJ Parrino at 140. Sophomore Jordan Eugenis and juniors Jason DaCruz and Withler Marcelin all have the potential to win 20 matches, and freshmen Max Rallo (103) and Danny Loizos (135) could make an immediate impact for what could be a formidable group.

Senior Tyler Lyster won 26 matches last season along with a district title, and will anchor the upperweights along with junior Colton Bigelow, who transferred back to his hometown of Ocean after two years at St. John Vianney. Bigelow was 22-8 as a sophomore. Senior Brandon Shenan will be solid at 145 while seniors Andres Rivero and junior Sam Sottile should win their share of matches at 152 and 189, respectively.

red Bank Catholic The Caseys finished up 2010 with a 715 record, and hope to improve on that mark with a team that features six wrestlers who won 10 or more matches and a promising sophomore class. Senior James Loures and sophomore Dan States are the returning wins leaders with 18 apiece, and will anchor the lower half of the lineup. Sophomore Chris Whitlock won 14 matches as a freshman and fellow sophomore Angelo Bailey picked up 10 wins. Junior Andrew LaMura went 1313 as a sophomore at 160 pounds while senior David States had a 17-6 record at 215 pounds. Junior Joe Coscarelli is a standout football player for the Caseys, and will return as the team's heavyweight.

Shane Herring, who is also the school's first and only district champ, to graduation. Taylor Mitchell (135) and Tony Frigon (Hwt) also graduated, so the Bengals will need a few wrestlers to step up and fill the void. Senior Ronnie Roeller and sophomore Joe Mandara are the returning wins leaders with 23 each last season, while senior Ryan Fogarty won 18 matches and junior Matt Schofield picked up 14 wins in 2010. The strength should be the lower half of the lineup with Mandara, Fogarty and Roeller, along with sophomore Nick Fogarty at 103 pounds. There is experience up top with Schofield and seniors Lou Buscio and John Frigon at 171, 189 and 215.

The Dragons have established themselves as a Top 10 team with consecutive 15-win seasons, including the program’s first sectional title in 2009. To continue that success and to challenge for the B South title, the Dragons will have to handle the loss of five key seniors. Ricky Bandejas, Kevin Decker, Corey Rackliffe, Ben Wright and Dan Brennan have all graduated and taken their 264 combined wins with them. However, a solid lineup still exists under head coach Matt Opacity thanks to a very good feeder program. Senior Connor Brennan is the big gun, having gone 32-7 at 140 pounds and taken second in the Region VI Tournament. There isn't a ton of experience up top, but sophomore Dan Watson could be in for a big year after posting a 14-9 record as a freshman. Down low, sophomore Nick Melon returns after a 17-11 season that also saw him net a District 23 championship at 103 pounds. With junior Joe Paton returning from an injury that sidelined him for most of the 2010 season and sophomore Steve Cimmino returning at 119 pounds, the Dragons' lowerweights could be a very strong group in 2011.

Barnegat Sports programs are growing in size and consistency every year at Barnegat, and the wrestling team is hoping to continue that trend after posting a 15-8 record last season.

after going 27-6. He'll be at 119 pounds as the anchor of the lowerweights. Junior John Kroon (140) and senior Chris DeDeyn (145) each won 16 matches a season ago, and will look to solidify the lineup. Besides those three wrestlers, there are a lot of unknowns, especially after junior Kalyph Hardy, a football standout, decided not to join the team. Central and head coach Mike Bischoff have a reputation of getting the job done, however, and could surprise in B South.

lacey The Lions will boast a very young team in 2011, but they will also be experienced as many juniors and sophomores saw key time last season. Down low, Lacey is led by junior Kevin Enright, who was 20-12 at 103 and has 32 career wins. Junior Danny Moore posted a 17-win campaign as a sophomore at 125 and sophomore Steve Knapp had 18 wins as a freshman. Improved seasons by those three could equal big dividends for the Lions in B South. Junior Lex Knapp will be at either 215 or heavyweight after going 27-9 as a sophomore and placing second in District 24 at 215. Senior Brennan Battalla won 12 matches last season at 171, and will look to push the 20-win mark and solidify the top half of the lineup with Knapp.

Manchester The Hawks finished 2010 with an 18-5 record, a No. 7 ranking in the Shore Conference, a District 24 championship, a Class B South Division title and an

appearance in the South Jersey Group II semifinals. It was a banner year for the Hawks, and despite graduating arguably the greatest heavyweight in state history, threetime champ Jimmy Lawson, Manchester could be in for even bigger accomplishments this season. The Hawks do have some holes in their lineup and don't have the luxury of six points nearly every heavyweight match, but where they are good, they are very good. Brothers Matt and Ken Theobold, a sophomore and junior, respectively, combined for 58 wins last year and will combine with juniors Jesse Meaney (28-9, 130 pounds) and Chris Stafford (20-13, 125 pounds) to form a potent run of lowerweights. Manchester should also be very solid up top with seniors Ryan and Matt Riegert, Anthony Prendimano, Hoss Gonzalez and Anthony Moriarty. Ryan Riegert was 26-8 last season, while his brother won 19 matches. Prendimano and Gonzalez each took third in the District 24 tournament. The Hawks have a challenging nondivisional schedule as well, and will have plenty of chances to make their mark in 2011.

Pinelands Despite losing one of its best wrestlers to injury, senior Alex Green, Pinelands put together a 12-8 season that saw it tie for second place in B South and qualify for the Shore Conference and state tournaments. It could be a tough year for the Wildcats, however. The squad lost 11 wrestlers to graduation, eight of whom won at least 10 matches. Plus, returning wins leader Trevor Mooney transferred to Southern, leaving Pinelands with a very thin lineup that is light on experience. Senior Ian Olsen is the returning wins leader after going 12-9 as a junior, while junior Josh Yaede picked up 10 wins as a sophomore.

Their Turn: Toms River South Wrestling By Bob Badders - Senior Staff Writer

E

ven teams with the strongest of traditions aren't immune to a down year or two every now and then. Just don't try explaining the law of averages to Toms River South head coach Ron Laycock, who has had his share of solid teams get eaten alive by the “Division of Doom.’’ “It's hard on the morale of the kids sometimes,” said Laycock from inside the John Nemetz Wrestling Room after a lighthearted, yet productive scrimmage with Ocean. “I can remember, just a few years ago, finishing last in A South and the six teams ahead of us were all ranked in the state top 20.” It's been that way for a while at Toms River South. The Indians were a force in the mid-1970s, winning four straight Shore Conference Tournament titles from 1975-1978 and capturing five consecutive district championships from 19751979. The team success slowly faded away, even if some individual talent was still there. The late Darnell Myers won a state title in 1984, and since then eight wrestlers have found a spot on the medal stand after the individual tournament. For much of the past decade, Toms River South has been buried at the bottom of the Shore Conference's Class A South division. It's arguably the state's toughest division with Jackson Memorial, Southern, Brick Memorial, Toms River East and Toms River North joining the Indians every year in a knockdown, drag-out battle for supremacy. Even with a handful of very good wrestlers, and few that found their way to the bright lights of Atlantic City, the Indians had become an afterthought.

That's all about to change. As the 2010-11 Shore Conference wrestling season gets ready to begin on Dec. 18, Toms River South boasts one of the deepest and most talented lineups in the entire conference. The Indians still have to contend with the Jacksons, the Brick Memorials and the Southerns of the world, but this time there's quite a good chance the Indians will be the ones standing at the end.

“I've started all four years and every year I have seen us getting better and better,” said senior Kyle Kenny. “We're pretty stacked at every weight class, and this can be the best year we've had in a long time.”

“It comes in different years for every team,” said senior Evan Tarver. “I think this is our year.”

wrestling. With a year of high school under his belt and a phenomenal offseason that saw him win a freshman national championship, the sky is the limit for Clagon.

Toms River South's lineup is young and experienced, lethal and balanced, and has had Senior Evan Tarver enough of a taste of success recently to want a whole lot more. In 2009-2010, Toms River South posted a 14-5 record, finished fourth in A South, third in District 24 and was a sectional finalist in the South Jersey Group III bracket. The Indians’ only losses came to teams ranked among the top 20 in the state.

“I was nervous coming up here last year,” Clagon said. “It was a different level. Eighth grade was eighth grade, and high school is totally different. I definitely feel a lot more comfortable. We ended up very strong, and even though I was hoping to win a state title, taking seventh as a freshman is pretty good.”

“Last year was just a taste of what we can do this year,” Tarver said. “And it was pretty good. We were right there with all the top programs in the Shore, so we're close.” “We got so close last year that it was really kind of an upset looking at the news that Monday morning and seeing how well Timber Creek did when we had a great shot to beat them,” Kenny said. “It really makes us work that much harder in practice.” Timber Creek, which defeated Toms River South, 3724, to win the South Jersey Group III sectional title, took South Plainfield to the final bout in the NJSIAA Group III tournament. South Plainfield won all of Group III and finished the season ranked No. 1 in New Jersey. So what exactly is it that makes Toms River South one of the best teams in the Shore before a takedown has even been attempted this season? For starters, the Indians have an impressive array of sophomore and junior talent that has made an immediate impact. Sophomore 135-pounder BJ Clagon heads the list along with classmate Kevin Corrigan at 112 pounds. Both were highly touted as freshmen, and both delivered. Clagon finished the season at Sophomore BJ Clagon 34-5, winning the District 24 125pound title, giving Matawan's Johnny Short a run for his money in the Region VI semifinals and finishing seventh in the state tournament during his first foray into high school

“The biggest difference in him this year is his confidence,” said Laycock of Clagon. “He Sophomore Kevin Corrigan gained confidence and got better as the year went on, and he had a tremendous offseason. He has set pretty lofty goals for himself this year, and he knows he can compete at the highest level.” Corrigan had equally as good of a season, but was unable to show his mettle for long in the postseason because of an illness before the region tournament. He placed second at District 24 after losing to Toms River North's Kyle McNulty. He was 26-2 on the season, losing only to Jackson Memorial freshman Brian Hamann and McNulty, a senior. Hamann ended up placing third in the state. McNulty? He took fourth. “I definitely think it got to him a little at the end of last year,” Laycock said. “Knowing he wrestled right there with Hamann and McNulty and those guys finished third and fourth in the state, it bothered him. I think he's set some big goals for himself, as well.” Garrett Applegate also saw significant time as a sophomore, going 20-7 and placing third at districts. The competition was so great in the lower half of the lineup that sophomores Zach Maikisch, Matt Maroukis and Charlie Carrero barely got a sniff at the lineup. Sophomore Anthony Ravallo did see 10 matches as an upperweight.

“We have such a great underclass, and now those kids have another year under their belts,” Tarver said. See

The Titans have solid numbers and a handful of wrestlers they hope can reach the 20-win mark, which would put Keansburg in place to contend for a division title. Senior Kevin Mount won 15 matches last season at 135 pounds and junior Tom Lacey was a 14-match winner at 145 pounds a season ago. kEy FACT Keyport's Greg Velasco is aiming to become just the second Keyport wrestler to win a Region VI title. Pete Christathakis won the heavyweight title in 1999.

The Red Raiders return four wrestlers who won at least 10 matches a season ago, and hope to contend for a title in the revamped B Central division. Senior Greg Velasco gives Keyport a hammer at heavyweight, as the two-sport

standout, who is also a top lineman on the football team, went 29-3 last season, won a district title and took third at the Region VI Tournament. The lowerweights hold the rest of the experienced grapplers with junior Tyler Eltringham and seniors Alex Wheeler and Tom Sollazzo. Some sophomores took their lumps last season as ninth-graders, so some progress by that group could vault the Red Raiders into contention in the division.

Point Beach With annual foe Shore Regional now in Class A Central, Point Beach is the clear favorite to win the B Central title. First-year head coach Jeff Bower looks to continue the tradition of strong wrestling at the small Ocean County school as he takes over for longtime coach Steve Sasse. Bower will have six wrestlers who won at least 13 matches last season, and has a lineup that is fairly balanced. Junior Rob Finnerty (17-10) will be at 125, senior Mike Conlon (1311) will be at 130 and senior Taylor Fioretti (18-13) will wrestle at 140 pounds. A quartet of freshmen – James Finnerty, Tore Capriglione, Tray Watkins, Riley Kelly – could give the Garnet Gulls a very strong group of lowerweights.

at 152 pounds, and senior Andrew Gross will wrestle at 215 and heavyweight after posting a 17-11 record last season. If all goes well, Point Beach will hoist its 15th division championship this season and contend for a spot in the postseason.

St. rose Between improved numbers and a new coaching staff that includes co-head coaches Daniel White and UFC lightweight Kurt Pellegrino, St. Rose's wrestling program looks to be in position for a much-improved season after a 1-16 record in 2010. Senior Dylan Seip (171) is the Purple Roses' best chance at having a wrestler advance to the Region VI tournament. He was 18-6 last season and came within a couple of wins of a district medal. Senior Christian Bozinos is another bright spot, having gone 17-7 at 145 pounds. St. Rose also has a group of freshmen who could make an impact, and that would bode well for the long-term success of the program.

Senior Dylan Kelly will wrestle at 171/189 pounds and leads the upperweight group after going 23-10 as a junior and winning a District 23 medal. Senior Matt Morris won 21 matches and will be

kEy FACT With a solid lineup and talented senior Chris Zak, Jackson Liberty could win its first division title and have its first region champ crowned this season.

In just its sixth season, Jackson Liberty has established itself as a winning program and a team that can challenge for a spot in the top 10. But to improve on their 13-7 record from 2010, the Lions will have to offset the loss of three key wrestlers from last season. Heavyweight Brendan Kahle, a district champion, graduated, and senior Joe Bartolini and junior Rob Hennings transferred out of the school to leave the Lions with some holes in the upper half of the lineup. Senior Chris Zak should take some of the sting away by returning from a 29-5 record to man the spot at 152 pounds. His brother, sophomore Nick Zak, will be at 160 pounds after going 178 as a freshman. Senior Josh Goodman and junior Josh Gonzalez have varsity experience at 215 and heavyweight, respectively. Sophomore Jonathan Scialabba (13-12) will be in the 112-pound range with senior Ishmeil Gadson (16-13), a Lakewood transfer, also in the mix. Sr. Nick Schueler (15-8) is slated as the 119pounder with junior Brandon Kosheff, who wrestled to a 20-6 mark as a sophomore, at 125 pounds to set Liberty up with a solid stretch of lowerweights.

lakewood

Coming off a 9-16 season, the Piners will try to move closer to .500 with a lineup that includes three wrestlers who notched double-digit wins in 2007. Sophomore Alex Martinez won 14 matches as a freshman 103-pounder while senior heavyweight Damian Branch is the returning wins leader with 17. In between, the Piners have senior David Mercado (13-12) at 130 pounds and juniors Eddie and Gary Carmona at 125 pounds. Ishmeil Gadson, who won 16 matches as a junior, transferred out of the school, however. Much of the upper portion of the lineup is inexperienced, however, after Lakewood

graduated 152-pounder Arnaldo Alvarez and 215-pounder David Jusino, who was the 2010 District 24 champ.

Manasquan

Nine starters return for a very young Manasquan team that hopes to improve on its 5-18 record from 2010. Junior 112-pounder Cassin Loures is the returning wins leader after going 21-7. Senior Mike Panzino picked up 11 wins and will be at 130 pounds, and senior Conner Schobel will try to improve on his 10 wins at 135 pounds. Junior Corey Phillips has the most experience among the upperweights, but either senior Jack Cuttrell or freshman Matt Forst, both of whom are standout linemen on the football team, could surprise at heavyweight.

Monsignor Donovan

Wins leader Anthony D'Anton returns at 103 pounds and two-time District 24 medalist Steve Glawson is back to anchor the upperweights as the Griffins aim to improve on their 6-13 record from 2010. D'Anton was 20-6 last season with 13 pins, while Glawson won 18 matches. Senior Angelo DeSalvo was also an 18match winner, and picked up 15 pins. Aside from D'Anton, the lower half of the lineup features junior Tom Donnelly (10 wins as a sophomore) and a host of sophomores that were thrown into the fire as freshmen. If some seasoning results in an improved record for the underclassmen, the Griffins could be pushing up against a .500 record.

Point Boro

It was a surprise to see usual postseason contender Point Boro struggle to a 10-18 mark in 2010 despite the presence of two state place-winners. But with Jordan Beverly and Sean Brand having graduated, the Panthers are still primed for a return to their winning ways in 2011.

Sr. Nick Onnembo leads the way at 112/119 pounds after going 31-5 and placing second at the District 23 Tournament at 103 pounds. The Harter brothers, sophomore Ryan and senior Matt, plus freshmen Darrin Perrotta, Ryan Budzek and Kevin Kelly, look to form a solid group of lowerweights. Senior John Bruno has transferred in from Point Beach to team with senior Doug Rosell to give the Panthers two reliable options in the middle of the lineup. Rosell was 25-4 a season ago, won a district title and was a Region VI medalist. Junior Andrew Matter is coming off a 15-win season at 189 while David Halliday is an underrated heavyweight coming off a 23-11 season. Freshmen CJ Griffiths, Nick Dzuna and Matt Gliddon are also in the mix from 189 through heavyweight.

Wall

After a couple of down years by Wall's standards, the Crimson Knights could be battling for a division title once again in 2011 behind a balanced lineup. Senior Andrew Marr is the big name on the team after having won a Region VI 215-pound title as a junior and placed seventh in New Jersey. Seniors Mark Donner (14-6, district runner-up) and Colin Egan (20-12, district champ) at 171 and 189 give Wall a tough group of upperweights. Down low, junior Steve Biserta will be at 125/130 pounds after going 28-8 and winning a district championship. Sophomore Dan Kinsella should improve on his 11-14 record compiled as a freshman, while juniors AJ Romanelli and Kevin Seidel, sophomores Don Kessler and Drew Donner and senior Cody Ormsbee will all get a shot in the lower half of the lineup. The middleweights are strong, as well, with junior Max McClelland (14 wins), senior Mark Vinges (13 wins) and senior Pete Kinsella (19 wins) in the mix from 140-160.

Senior forward Alex Milne also returns after coming up with some clutch buckets for the Rebels last season, and she should also be one of the team’s top rebounders.

The Contenders:

The Eagles are led by senior guard Meghan McGuinness, who is part of a 2011 Shore Conference class that is littered with Division I recruits. McGuinness will continue her career at Niagara, but before she gets there, she and the Eagles would like to add a championship banner under veteran head coach Tom Brennan.

FReeHOLD TOWNSHiP is always a threat under veteran coach John Sciarappa, but the Patriots were dealt a blow during the offseason when their top returner, junior swing Annette Snow, transferred to Blair Academy. Add that to the loss of Division I talent Jackie Cardamone to graduation, and the Patriots will have to fill a large scoring void from last season. Much of that will be up to senior returners Brittany Incorvia and Ashley Stenftennagel, who both were key contributors last season but will have to emerge as more potent scorers. Junior guard Stephanie Martinez is another to watch for the Patriots after seeing time as a sophomore.

Middletown South will also be playing this season with the inspiration of teammate Kerri Kinsella, a senior forward and key MARLBORO lost top guard Brianna contributor from last Nicholls to graduation but brings back Middletown South season who will most another talented scorer in senior guard senior Meghan McGuinness likely miss the season Samantha Hermans, whose ability to put the because of illness. Senior point guard Kelly Haspel also returns along with speedy sophomore Kiera Gannon. In the paint, 5-foot-10 sophomore Jackie Dluhi looks to be the Eagles’ primary presence and a player who will be counted on to handle a good part of the rebounding duties. Senior guard Megan Gray is back after missing nearly all of last season because of a torn ACL, and her sister, Carissa Gray, also should be an important contributor. Haspel’s ability to run the point allows the 5-foot-10 McGuinness to play out on the wing and use her size and shooting ability to create plenty of match-up problems. She has shown the ability to score against elite teams and should once again be one of the Shore Conference’s better offensive threats off the dribble and off the catch. By Scott Stump – Managing editor The Favorites Two old foes with rosters that are loaded with Division I talent will fight it out for the Class A Central title, with ST. JOHN ViANNey being the favorite over RuMSONFAiR HAVeN after winning the division the past couple seasons. The Lancers boast a starting lineup with four Division I players in senior point guard Jackie Kates (University of Pennsylvania); senior guard Missy Repoli (Colgate); senior forward/center Arron Zimmerman (American University) and senior forward Katie O’Reilly (Lehigh). That group has been a force on varsity since their freshman season under head coach Dawn Karpell, and will now look to cap their brilliant careers, which have included three straight NJSIAA NonPublic A titles, and a Tournament of Champions title in 2009, with a Shore Conference Tournament title and another TOC crown. That group has won 85 games in its first three seasons, and will also get contributions from sophomore Kat Egan and juniors Zoe Otterman and Angelica Esposito. The Lancers were dealt a blow when another returner with experience, sophomore Lyndsay Rowe, broke her collarbone in the preseason and will miss at least six weeks.

St. John Vianney senior Jackie Kates

Helping offset her absence will be the latest wave of incoming freshman talent, including Jackie Gallagher, Becky Pund, Olivia Liskowitz and Katie Beriont. All in all, this stacks up again as a team that can make a run to its third TOC final and finish ranked in the top 25 in the nation. Trying to put a monkey wrench into those plans will be Rumson-Fair Haven under veteran coach George Sourlis. The Bulldogs boast four Division I starters along with senior point guard Ellie Wilbur, who also had Division I interest but has decided to continue her career at Division II University of Tampa. Senior center Victoria Lesko (Boston College), senior

twins Nicole Isaacs (Manhattan) and Stephanie Isaacs (Fairleigh Dickinson), and senior guard Ashley Cooper (Holy Cross) are all starters headed to Division I programs. Cooper is an athletic scorer who can get to the basket off the dribble and has 3-point range, both Isaacs sisters can hit from deep, and Lesko is a 6-foot-3 presence in the middle. The Bulldogs will go as far as that starting five can take them, as the bench is a little thin, with mainly sophomores who saw little playing time last season as freshmen in big games. Cooper has been Rumson’s leading scorer, but all five are capable of putting the ball on the floor and scoring in multiple ways. The Bulldogs always play suffocating defense, and it will be imperative for their guards to take care of the ball against the wicked St. John Vianney press in order to upend the Lancers as division champs and make a run at an SCT title.

The Contenders: In other divisions, HOLMDeL would be right there near the top under head coach Bob Ward, but in a division as topheavy as this one, the Hornets will have to settle for spoiler status. Guard Ally Mnich returns and should be a force along with sophomore Tara Inman, who made a big impact as a freshman and gives Holmdel a solid 1-2 punch at guard. Senior guard Shannon Nelson is another experienced returner who should contribute. A key newcomer is freshman guard Victoria Cardaci, whose ability to run the point can allow Mnich and Inman to worry more about scoring than ballhandling, while also giving the Hornets another guard who can handle the ball against the pressure they will see from Rumson and St. John Vianney. While Holmdel certainly has some talent, it doesn’t have the depth of the top teams, so it remains to be seen how that will factor into this season. ReD BANk and SHORe RegiONAL look to be in the next tier of teams, as Red Bank moves into the division from Class B North under head coach James Young. The Bucs were young last season and made some strides. They return seniors Liz DeMaria and Lauren Bowler, junior guards Theresa Soya and Erin Simon, and improving sophomore forward Zoe Curtis and look to continue their success. The Bucs have the ability to grab that spot behind Holmdel in a loaded division and qualify for the SCT if they can do a good job against their nondivisional schedule. Shore was hit hard by graduation, including standout center Liz West, and will try to regroup under coach David Dudzinski behind sophomore guards Gina Ruscil and Claudia LaMarca and a host of newcomers. Another team that took a big hit to graduation was RARiTAN, which won four games last season and lost one of the Shore’s top scorers and a Division I recruit, Long Island University freshman Nicole Lentini. Sophomore guard Julie Tonuzi and sophomore forward Brianna Rodriguez are the only returners with any real experience, so it will be a learning season for the Rockets under head coach Ron Poll. MATAWAN has a new coach in Jay Lagomarsino, who has been a head coach at several boys programs in the Shore for over 20 seasons. He inherits a young team led by senior guards Brianne Brady and Casey Hotalen along with sophomores Amanda Carmichael and Lauren Postell.

saw plenty of time as a freshman and showed some scoring potential.

Just like senior center and Rutgers recruit Christa Evans looms over the competition, her JACkSON MeMORiAL team looks to be head and shoulders above Class A South in its bid to repeat as champions.

Southern lost its twin towers and top scorers, Kristen Sharkey and Avery Hodgson, to graduation. Sharkey was a 1,000-point scorer and the focal point of the offense for the past two seasons, often carrying the team on her back in that department, so it remains to be seen who will emerge to help fill that void this season on a team that always plays hardnosed defense under veteran head coach Kathy Snyder.

Evans returns with another offseason of work on her game, adding a consistent jumper to go with her power game inside. Making the Jaguars even more dangerous is that they can play inside-out with Evans drawing attention and double teams in the post and then kicking it out to 3-point specialist Hannah Missry, a sophomore guard who was a key contributor as a freshman to last season’s 23-win team.

Senior guard Amanda Holloway and her sister, junior guard Megan Holloway, return with experience but were more defenders and facilitators than scorers last season. Seniors Lauren Ivancich, Maggie Kaszuba, Kelsey Gesicki and Jill Henderson all return after seeing some time last season along with junior forward Lyndsay Merola. How the Rams shape up offensively will ultimately determine their ability to try and play spoiler in this division. TOMS RiVeR SOuTH, BRiCk MeMORiAL and TOMS RiVeR eAST look to be fighting it out after those top three teams while also weathering some graduation losses of their own.

Jackson Memorial senior Christa Evans

Jackson should also be able to pound teams with its front line, as flanking Evans will be senior forward Kim Clemmer and junior forward Jazmin Curet. Junior guard Shannon Evans, Christa’s sister, is a hard-nosed defender and dirty work player who also looks to be improved offensively this season. Junior guard Tiffany Montagne showed flashes of scoring ability, particularly off the dribble, as a sophomore and should be another complement to Evans. Sophomore guard Stephanie Mason also will be counted on to play some important minutes for the Jaguars.

The Contenders: TOMS RiVeR NORTH and SOuTHeRN look to be the two main teams trying to spoil a repeat by Jackson Memorial, but both lost some outstanding players to graduation. Under head coach Vicki Gillen, Toms River North returns a solid scorer in senior guard Jen Galamb, who will try to compensate for the loss of 1,000-point scorer Asia Taylor as well as Maria Gerew, whose younger sister, Christina, is one of the newcomers for the Mariners this season. Helping out Galamb will be seniors Lacey McKeon and Jamie Hirschy, along with sophomore Kendal Kauffman, who

Coach Sarah Knight’s Toms River South squad graduated All-Division guard Nikki Petrosino, and senior guard Jamie Blondina is the lone senior returner with significant experience. Junior forward Emily Cottrell and sophomore guard Amanda Timmes also saw some time last season, and they lead a team that could have three freshmen in its regular rotation. Brick Memorial has a new head coach in Ken Fischer and looks to continue its solid play in recent seasons that began under former coach Rayna Post. The main returner for the Mustangs is senior guard Jackie Caravella, who had some big scoring nights last season and should be counted upon even more heavily this season after the graduation of the majority of the Mustangs’ top scorers from last season. Marissa Telerico and Tina Reilly are also expected to be important contributors for a team that will be playing a large group of newcomers. On the heels of a 7-win season, Toms River East and head coach Kevin Cohen return a lot of experience, but lose one of the most potent scorers in school history in guard Holly Luciano to graduation. Junior guards Corey Schwartz, Marissa Bruno, Nicole Breunig and Emily Kunzman return with experience in the backcourt, while senior forwards Sam Faragalli, Amanda Cavaliere and Angela Coon and junior Lara Goodwin should bolster the frontcourt. A pair of sophomores, Kristen Kennedy and Mary Kate Sullivan, add some depth to the backcourt for the Raiders, who will fight to make a move up in the standings in what looks to be a fairly wide open division after Jackson Memorial.

TrS Wrestling Continued from page 29 There are only seven seniors on the roster, but wrestlers like Tarver, Kenny and two-time district medalist Alan Manzano will serve as the rudder for the Indians as they try to make their way through a schedule filled with landmines and potential pitfalls around every turn. Junior Nick Osborn could also turn some heads after winning 12 matches and a district medal as a sophomore.

“This year we have a bunch of seniors in the starting lineup, and we have good freshmen coming up every year,” Kenny said. “We had a really tough season with some close losses last season, so we're trying to fine-tune those areas

and be even more disciplined at cutting weight. Overall, we should just be better.” The schedule won't be doing the Indians any favors, but at this point the last thing they're looking for is a free ride. Their first dual match is a huge one at Southern on Dec. 22, then it’s off to Manchester for the Hawk Classic. After the holiday break, the Indians visit Brick Memorial, host a quad with Brick, Toms River North and Lower Cape May, wrestle Group II power Brearley at Rutgers University and go on the road to Jackson Memorial. The schedule eases up a bit after that, but the early part of the season will tell us a lot about Toms River South.

Laycock believes his team is up to the challenge. “I think we're mentally ready,” Laycock said. “We not only wrestle these guys during the season, we see them over the summer, and we have enough club guys, so I think our guys feel they can compete with those teams.” Give credit to Laycock, now in his 13th season as head coach, who stayed the course with his program and is finally reaping the benefits. All the pieces – talent, experience, drive – are in place for the Indians to have a memorable season. The only thing left to do is wrestle. “We know we'll be a very competitive team this year as long as everybody falls into the right weight classes,” Laycock said. “Certainly winning anything will be a challenge with Jackson, Southern and, in our section, Timber Creek. But it will be a fun year.”

NePTuNe is the defending NJSIAA Tournament of Champions winner and on a mission for a mythical national championship this season, so favorites don’t get any heavier than this. The Scarlet Fliers, who have registered consecutive 30-1 seasons, have a challenging nonconference schedule lined up featuring several state, regional and national powers, but after breezing to the Class B North title last season, they may have at least work hard in two divisional games this season now that perennial power Red Bank Catholic has moved into Class B North from Class A Central. Neptune is certainly up to the challenge as it returns three of the top 100 players in the nation for the Class of 2011 in senior guards Syessence Davis and Shakena Richardson and senior center Chyna Golden. Davis and Richardson, the latter of whom was selected as the All Shore Media Girls Basketball Player of the Year last season, have both signed with Rutgers, while Golden is committed to Pittsburgh. Also returning is senior guard Morgan Thompson, one of the best 3-point shooters in the Shore Conference, as well as senior Neptune senior Chyna guard Noelle Carter, a glue player and defender with experience. A big question will be how Neptune fills the void of graduated standout Sehmonyeh Allen, a versatile player who could score inside and from behind the arc, rebound and cause trouble on defense. Sophomore Ivy Harrington should help in that area after seeing time as a freshman, and junior guard Cydney Mooney, a transfer from RBC, also should be a contributor once she is done sitting out 30 days because of NJSIAA transfer rules. Junior guard Nahja Carter and senior forward Natasha Williams also should be part of the rotation along with promising freshman newcomers Iyonna Crenshaw and Lorena Hubbard at forward.

Neptune beat every team in the division by at least 20 points last season in cruising to the title.

another TOC title and beyond, with an undefeated season against a tough schedule the primary goal for a group of senior stars that is trying to leave a legacy that will stand among the all-time greats in the history of this area.

The Contenders: ReD BANk CATHOLiC is the only team in this division with the talent to at least give Neptune a stiff challenge, as the Caseys return a pair of Division I talents and a group of experienced guards. Senior center Samantha Guastella, a Quinnipiac recruit, is one of the top returning post players in the Shore Conference, and her inside game is complemented by the outside shooting and scoring ability of senior guard Kasey Hobbie, who has committed to Division I Presbyterian. Senior guard Mary Kate Byrnes is a four-year varsity player with good 3-point shooting ability, and junior guard Morgan Arnott also returns with big-game experience against the best teams in the Shore Conference. The Caseys did lose one guard, junior Morgan Barry, who transferred to St. Rose, which hurts their depth a little. A large contingent of sophomores will be counted on to be an important part of the rotation, including guards Mary Kate Caverly, Alex Alfano and Maria Balocco and forwards Tara Daniels, and Caroline Corcoran. Junior forward Kayla Dunn should also see time. Golden

The latest freshman to enter with the “future star’’ tag for RBC is forward Grace Fallon, a versatile talent with good size and athleticism who should improve as she gets more acclimated to highlevel varsity play. After RBC, it’s mainly a free-for-fall between Ocean, Freehold, Colts Neck and Monmouth, with Long Branch trying to get out of last place after struggling for a while. OCeAN graduated 1,000-point scorer Annie Farrow, so the main question is where the bulk of the offense will come from for the Spartans under head coach Michael Samples. Junior forward Brittany O’Gorman and junior guard Macie Fisher are also expected to be important contributors for a team that won 12 games last season. It’s a new era at COLTS NeCk under head coach Jeanene Healy, as the best senior class in school history and one of the best in recent Shore Conference history has moved on, taking talents like 1,000-point scorers Brooke Hampton and Lauren Clarke with it. Senior forward Kaitlin Schullstrom is one of the few returners with any real experience, and looks to be a leader on a young team that also includes junior guard Dawn Mazurkiewicz and sophomore guards Danielle DeGroot and Jessie Fifield. Erica Esdaile is the only other returner with real experience for the Colonials, so it will be up to a group of newcomers to help this team move up in the standings. MONMOuTH returns one of the more dynamic scorers in the division outside of Neptune and RBC in junior swing Jazmine Davis, a three-year varsity player. She will try to help the Falcons improve on a 5-win season under veteran coach Audra Corson. By Scott Stump – Managing editor The Favorites ST. ROSe is the 800pound gorilla in this division, winning every game by 20-plus points almost every night out, and that doesn’t look like it will change this season. If anything, the gap may be even larger than usual because of graduation losses for some other teams. Under head coach Joe Roman, St. Rose has its St. Rose's sights set on the NJSIAA Kasey Chambers Non-Public B title and a darkhorse run to a Shore Conference Tournament title, so the division is somewhat of an afterthought. The Purple Roses are led by one of the top post players in New Jersey, 6-foot-3 junior Samantha Clark. She has become a match-up nightmare because she can face up and score all the way out past the 3-point line, but also bang in the post and score with contact. Making her even tougher to defend has been the consistent improvement of senior forward Nicole Donahue, a long and athletic defender who hits the offensive glass and can finish underneath. St. Rose also has a talented and experienced point guard in junior Kasey Chambers, who will have to help offset the loss of some talented guards like Alexx Hall and Alison Sweeney to graduation. Junior Diana Malanga was an underrated guard last season and gave St. Rose some big minutes and scoring in pressure situations, so she will be another important contributor. One of those guard spots should eventually be filled by Red Bank Catholic transfer Morgan Barry, a junior who has biggame experience from her time with the Caseys. She has to sit out the first 30 days of the season because of the NJSIAA transfer rule. Senior Kaitlin Marsicano should also be in the guard rotation along with sophomore Ellie Masonius. Freshman Sarah Kurtz is a newcomer who could also see some time in the frontcourt.

Brianna Murphy and Kerrin McCarthy returning along with junior swing Taylor Curti. Junior Tara Yetman is an experienced guard who should lead the backcourt, boost her scoring, and feed the post. As many as four freshmen could see important minutes for the Seraphs, so how the newcomers mesh with the veterans may determine if they can duplicate their 18-win season from last year. POiNT BeACH and keyPORT look to be right behind Mater Dei Prep in the race for runner-up status as those two try to unseat the Seraphs and claim a Class B Central public title, which requires at least a second-place finish. Keyport is a top candidate because of the return of senior guard Devinn Bright, one of the top scorers in the division and a four-year varsity player, as well as senior forward Molly Carroll, another solid scorer and a strong rebounder. Under head coach Kevin Flynn, senior guards Rosaleen Green and Ashley Borza also return to team with Bright in the backcourt, and senior forward Shannon Quigley gives the frontcourt depth alongside Carroll. Sophomore guards Angie Tometto and Samantha Cortez also return after seeing some time as freshmen. If Bright and Carroll can provide consistent scoring in the division, the Red Raiders have a shot at a public championship. Point Beach took a hit from graduation with the loss of AllDivision forward Madison Gourley, and look to have taken another blow with junior guard Brianna Feerst most likely not coming out for the team after playing the last two seasons. Feerst is the daughter of head coach Mike Feerst and is also an All-Shore cross country and long distance runner, and it appears as if she is not going to be playing basketball this season to focus on running. The Garnet Gulls do return senior standout Lauren Romao, a good scorer and four-year varsity player who will have to shoulder much of the load on offense along with her younger sister, Candice, a sophomore, and senior guard Jessica Yuri. keANSBuRg and HeNRy HuDSON will try to make strides after winning a combined 7 games last season. After being decimated by graduation before last season under head coach Tim O’Halloran, Keansburg returns seven seniors and could surprise. Sam Hosey, a star pitcher on the softball team, is at guard along with Lindsay Best, Katherine Crowe and Tiffany Rinck, while seniors Candice Alicea, Tabitha Corrao and Nicole Rogan all return with experience at forward. Henry Hudson brings back Bridget Rafter, Kylie Hubeny and Dominique Woods on a team that won two games last season under head coach Catherine McGrath and will look to get a boost on the offensive end to try and make an improvement in the win column. ASBuRy PARk has struggled mightily in recent seasons and looks to again have a hard time searching for wins, although it does return senior guard Biquasia Postell.

By Scott Stump – Managing editor The Favorites Last season, Central was an extremely young team taking its lumps under new head coach John Truhan. One season later, the Golden Eagles could be division champions. CeNTRAL returns just about everyone from last season’s team after playing a large group of freshmen, and has also been helped by the Shore Conference realignment that put a strong Point Boro team that won the Class B South title last season into the newly created Class C Central. That leaves Class B South wide open, and between its experience and coaching, the opportunity is ripe for Central to grab the championship. The Golden Eagles return a strong sophomore class that includes Rachel Iozzia and Jocelyn Mayo, while also returning senior guard Heather Tice, who showed her potential last season with a 29-point outburst in a win over Manchester. Seniors Brittany McLoughlin and Julia Dickhaus also return along with junior guard Ashley Bernath and junior forward Tiffany Williams. While Manchester may have the biggest returning name in senior guard Gabrielle Valmon, Central appears to have a little more depth, plus a year of experience should make an important difference, particularly for that sophomore class. There also is a large crop of newcomers who should bolster Central’s rotation.

MANCHeSTeR has always been a threat in this division under head coach Sweeney McKennan and was the reigning champion before Point Boro took the title from the Hawks last season. They return four-year varsity standout Gabrielle Valmon, a high-scoring guard who can singlehandedly change games with her speed off the dribble.

She will again have to do a bulk of the scoring, but should also get help from fellow senior Marisa Ortiz at guard and a large contingent in the frontcourt that includes senior forwards Kendal Parliament, Amy Higgins, Megan Dragan and Sarah Elzayat as well as junior center Corrine Morgan. This team will most likely go as far as Valmon will take it, but a crucial factor will be an improvement on defense because Central plays in a lot of low-scoring games and is a solid defensive team.

BRiCk, PiNeLANDS and LACey look to be in the hunt for contender status behind the top two teams, with Brick and Lacey moving down into the division from Class A South. Brick returns a solid scorer in senior guard Shaniece Hardy, who was a second-team All-Division pick in A South last season by the coaches. Hardy will be the centerpiece of a team that also returns senior guard Larissa Forese and junior guard Kathleen Conlon. Two sophomores who saw some time as freshmen, guard Ashley Pfeil and center Caitlin McDede, also should be important contributors, with a contingent of juniors moving up from JV to bolster the rotation under head coach Kristi McCullough. Pinelands won 11 games last season under head coach Keith Lowe and returns senior guard Ashlee Paknis and senior guard/forward Miaja Coursey to lead the way. Those two should handle much of the scoring, with senior guards Katie White and Lexie Feldman rounding out the backcourt rotation with junior Ashley King. Taylor Binet and Angela Dewey are a pair of seniors who return at forward with experience along with junior forward Jenna Dowd and sophomore Melinda MacNeil. BARNegAT graduated the program’s all-time leading scorer, Catherine Keough, but does return senior guard Autumn Herring to help fill the void on offense. Senior forward Tierney Henderson is an experienced returner along with Emily Collins in the frontcourt on a guardoriented team that also includes sophomores Bethany Cunningham and Samantha DeCapua and junior Danielle Chiarella. After finishing winless last season, Lacey will try to dig itself out of the hole behind seniors Marlina Pavlis and Laura D’Ornellas as well as juniors Jenna Fleck and Meghan Schantz under veteran coach Patty Cooke.

kEy FACTS Point Boro was the Class B South champion last season before becoming part of the newly created Class C Central.

In a division that was newly created in the latest Shore Conference realignment, we already have a juicy rivalry as a young POiNT BORO team will face off against an equally young Manasquan team in battles that should continue for the next few seasons.

Jess Macchi and sophomore forward Kerry Malleck. They formed the core of a team that won 23 games last season under head coach David Drew. This season we will see how much a difference a year of experience has made and see if the depth of the Panthers can overcome the star power of Manasquan.

MANASquAN gets the slight edge over a Point Boro team that won Class B South last season because it has the most dynamic scorer in the Shore Conference, junior Michaela Mabrey, who averaged 27.7 points per game last season and put up some numbers that have rarely, if ever, been seen in this area.

The Contenders:

A big reason Manasquan is a slight favorite under second-year head coach Felix Romero after only winning 10 games last season is the addition of freshman guard Katelynn Flaherty, the most highly-touted incoming freshman in the Shore Conference. That is saying something considering the annual influx of talent in the state’s premier girls basketball conference, but Flaherty has a chance to form a potent 1-2 scoring punch with Mabrey.

Nevin looks to be the primary offensive threat on a Crimson Knights squad that also brings back seniors Tori Ball and Taylor Knier in the frontcourt along with juniors Emily Cilinski and Hayley Fried in the backcourt. How they fill the void left by Campbell should go a long way toward determining their success under first-year head coach Colleen Kilmurray.

Senior forward Brigid Gannon also returns for the Warriors along with an experienced group of guards that also includes juniors Gretchen Fay and Melissa Pavia as well as sophomore Anna Cardelfe. In addition to Flaherty, freshman forwards Samantha Sullivan and Bridget Ford also should see time along with junior Shannon Gepp.

WALL and MONSigNOR DONOVAN look like the main candidates to play the spoiler role, although Wall graduated all-time leading scorer Kathryn Campbell but does return senior guard Jess Nevin.

Under first-year coach Jerry Bruno, Monsignor Donovan brings back its top two players, high-scoring sophomore Kelly Milana and senior forward Christine Eiserle, who were both second-team AllDivision selections by the coaches in Class B South last season. Milana made an instant impact as a freshman and will look to help the Griffins open some eyes this season on a team that played several freshmen last season, including sophomore returners Amanda Hagaman and Francesca Gervato. JACkSON LiBeRTy moves into the division from Class B South after graduating its top player from last season, guard Alaina Flanagan. The Lions will try to keep pace with a very young team that has a large sophomore class, including returners April Szymczyk, Kyasia White and Courtney Titus. Senior guard Nicole Kapasakis will be counted on for leadership as one of the few experienced seniors on the roster, and junior forward Anijaah White will also be counted upon on a team that will play a lot of sophomores.

Point Boro returns almost everyone from last season’s freshmen-laden Class B South and South Jersey Group III champions, including star sophomore Kelly Hughes, who averaged 19.5 points per game Point Boro last season. She is one of the sophomore Kelly Hughes most deadly outside shooters in the Shore Conference and can also put the ball on the floor and get into the lane. Finally, LAkeWOOD will try to improve on a four-win season despite graduating its top player, Nysheera Butler. Senior Kelsey Haycook, another standout, also returns The group of Sierra Keraitis, Myandra Dixon, Lashea as one of Point Boro’s most versatile playes, with the Woodside and others will try to help the Piners make some ability to score inside and step out and hit jumpers. progress in the win column. OFFENSIVE PlAyEr OF THE yEAr JOSH FIRKSER, SR., RB, MANALAPAN Not only did Josh Firkser rack up impressive numbers in 2010, he did it against high-level competition. After rushing for over 1,000 yards as a junior, Firkser exploded for a schoolrecord 2,053 yards rushing on 232 carries and rushed for 27 touchdowns, becoming the first 2,000yard rusher in school history and beating the previous school singleseason record by nearly 500 yards. He also had 317 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns for a total of 32 touchdowns on the season, another school record. He helped the Braves finish 8-3 and win the Class A North title, their first outright division title since 1996, and reach the semifinals of the Central Jersey Group IV playoffs before losing to eventual champion Sayreville. In a 54-27 regular-season win over Howell, he ran for a school-record 318 yards and scored a school-record seven touchdowns, six of them rushing. In a win over Central Jersey Group III finalist Middletown South, Firkser ran for 224 yards and two touchdowns and

DEFENSIVE PlAyEr OF THE yEAr WILL WOWKANYN, SR., DL, BRICK MEMORIAL

also had a 33-yard touchdown catch. In a win over Toms River North (7-3), he ran for 256 yards and three touchdowns and also caught the game-winning, 80-yard touchdown pass with less than 30 seconds remaining. The only team to hold him under 100 yards in a game all season was Sayreville, which limited him to 70, although he did still score a touchdown in a loss to the Bombers in the CJ IV semifinals. In the CJ IV quarterfinals against Howell, he ran for 215 yards and four touchdowns in the victory. Perhaps most incredibly, Firkser did not have one fumble all season on 232 carries. The 6-foot, 210-pound senior has received interest from Georgetown, UMass, Colgate, Marist and Sacred Heart. He was also selected as the Class A North Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches and the Monmouth County Offensive Player of the Year by The Shore Sports Network.

MOST VAluABlE PlAyEr JARED ALLISON, SR., QB/DB/PR/KR, MATAWAN

A big reason Matawan won 22 of its last 23 games was because of the play of the electrifying Allison, one of the hardest players to defend in the Shore Conference. He finished 43-for-93 for 824 yards and 10 touchdowns passing and ran for a team-high 866 yards and 10 touchdowns but had nearly 2,000 total

Volume-2 Issue-23 12/20/10 Page 43

yards when you factor in his special teams production. He had punt return touchdowns of 92 and 80 yards in the state playoffs and also caught a touchdown pass during the season in addition to having multiple special teams scores during the regular season. Opposing defensive coordinators from every team they faced said he was the one they had to stop to slow down the Huskies' balanced attack, which also included the backfield of Keith Beaty, McArthur Underwood and Cassius Williams. Allison has offers from Bryant University and Eastern Illinois and has drawn Division I-AA interest from several other schools. A rare four-year starter at quarterback, Allison led the Huskies to consecutive 11-1 seasons in the last two years, including a Central Jersey II championship in 2009 and an appearance in the CJ II final this season before an upset loss to Rumson. Allison also was a starting defensive back and a playmaker in the secondary.

A destructive force in the middle for a Mustangs' defense that allowed 6.5 points per game and posted four shutouts in leading Brick Memorial to the Central Jersey Group IV final, Wowkanyn led the team with 64

tackles, 62 of them solo tackles, finished with a school single-season record 14 sacks and had 23 hits for a loss. Wowkanyn also had 6 forced fumbles, an interception, and three passes defensed. His best characteristic was his explosion off the ball and timing the snap to beat defenders with his quickness and split the almost constant double teams that he faced all season. Wowkanyn was a three-year starter for the Mustangs, who finished 9-3 this season and reached their third straight CJ IV final before losing 14-0 to Sayreville. Brick Memorial did not allow more than 14 points in any of its 12 games this season. He is looking at going to a junior college to continue his career.

COACH OF THE yEAr SHANE FALLON, RUMSON-FH A former standout quarterback at Rumson-Fair Haven, Fallon led the Bulldogs to their first state sectional title in school history in improbable fashion, as they shocked previously undefeated Matawan, the defending state champion, 13-7, to win the NJSIAA Central Jersey Group II title and cap a 9-3 season. In 13 seasons at the helm, Fallon has a career record of 89-46 and has led the Bulldogs to two state sectional final appearances, including one in 2007. Rumson finished second behind Matawan in Class A Central this season after jumping up from the small-school Patriot Division under the latest Shore Conference realignment. The Bulldogs have made four state playoff

appearances in the last five seasons under Fallon after having made five in their entire history since the inception of the playoff system in 1974. This also marks the second year in a row that the All Shore Media Coach of the Year has come from Central Jersey Group II, as Matawan's Joe Martucci earned it last season after leading the Huskies to their first state title since 1992.

Hockey Preview By Scott Stump – Managing editor While the Shore Conference hockey conversation inevitably starts with Christian Brothers Academy, there are several public school programs that return loaded with talent and are looking to again make deep runs into their respective state playoff brackets. Leading the way is Toms River South, which had a magical run to the NJSIAA Public A title last season and returns its top player and one of the best players in the state, senior forward Jay Malone, who was a second-team All-State selection last season after finishing with 58 goals and 32 assists. He helped the Indians finish a banner season with a 25-2-2 record. The Indians also won the Shore Conference Class B South title last season and look like the favorite to win the newly created Shore Conference B Division under the latest realignment, especially with star goalie Pat Kerney also returning along with Todd Unger, who is a strong scoring complement to Malone. Middletown South, which won the Handchen Cup last season, also returns most of its core, including standout goalie Chris Marsillo. The Eagles also have plenty of offense with the Johnsons, Matt and Brett, along with forwards Jason Zimmel and Chris Connor. They took second in Class A North last season behind CBA and should be in a fight with Red Bank Catholic, Monsignor Donovan and Brick Memorial for that status again this season in the A Division. As for CBA, the Colts took a hit from graduation after winning Class A North and finishing second to perennial power Delbarton in the state’s premier league, the Gordon Conference American Division. Of course, the cupboard at CBA is never bare, and this season’s top returners include sophomore defenseman Connor Clifton, who showed some scoring punch with 7 goals and 10 assists last season. Also, junior goalie Kyle Shapiro is back after starting eight games last season and posting a 1.64 goals-against average. A team looking to surprise in the B Division is Howell, which is only in its third season as a varsity program, but has already experienced plenty of success, going 19-4-1 in its first season and then finishing 16-5-4 and reaching the Public A quarterfinals last season. Senior

forward Eddie Pyskaty, senior Michael Leiro and junior Michael Kochenash are the ones to watch on the top line for the Rebels. Many of the newer programs in the Shore like Marlboro, Ocean, Point Boro, St. Rose, and Jackson Liberty are competing in the new Division D. Teams like Southern, Rumson and Manasquan that finished in the middle of the pack or around .500 in their respective divisions last season, will try to make a run at the title in the new Division C.
