he latest installment of issues in Madeira Beach has Mayor Maggi Black calling for fellow Commissioners Nancy Hodges and Terry Lister to forfeit their seats on the commission immediately. Hodges and Lister have regularly opposed Black and her allies on the commission, Commissioners John Douthirt and Nancy Oakley. Black’s actions are in response to a recent recall petition against Douthirt and Oakley that Black said was signed by Hodges and Lister. Black alleges that Hodges and Lister violated the city’s charter by violating the state Sunshine Law with this recall effort. Black claimed that this would result in an automatic forfeit of their seats on the commission. However, even if there was a violation of the Sunshine Law, this does not vio-

or many Pinellas County beach residents, the night of their community’s annual holiday boat parade is their favorite night of the year. Many waterfront households host festive parties on that night, complete with fireworks, eggnog and maybe a little mistletoe. If the boat parade is definitely your thing, here’s the rundown of schedules for you. It might be a little late to plan a huge shindig, but at least you won’t miss the main event. Enjoy, and happy holidays! The Island Estates Yacht Club Boat Parade - One of the largest and most

Treasure Island chooses new city manager

From the files of Captain Obvious...

TREASURE ISLAND Garry Brumback, the new city manager for Treasure Island, is expected to begin his duties for the city on Dec. 18. He will fill the post that has been vacant since former city manager Reid Silverboard retired in May after 10 years at the position. Brumback has signed a contract with the city that Garry Brumback is good through Courtesy City of Dec. 18, 2020. Treasure Island His initial salary will be $135,000 a year. He was most recently town manager in Southington, Conn., where his salary was $170,000 a year, and was previously city manager in Baytown, Texas for six years and assistant city manager in Clearwater for eight years.

CLEARWATER - Clearwater Ciy councilmembers have lowered the boom, and rightly so. It would seem that the city’s tourism website, VisitClearwaterFlorida.com, has been promoting hotels and other lodging accommodations that are located outside of the city, and councilmembers, in particular Councilman Hoyt Hamilton and Mayor George Cretekos, don’t think that’s cool. Councilmembers were swiftly assured that the website would be changed to only include lodging options with a Clearwater zip code. IRB OKs microbreweries INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - IRB commissioners recently approved an ordinance that will allow microbreweries to operate in the city. According to City Manager Gregg Mims, the city has received several inquiries about running a microbrewery there, so the timing was right.

he ongoing fight against parking and traffic problems in Clearwater Beach might be getting some hightech help in the form of elevated gondola travel. Clearwater resident Tom Nocera is ready to move forward with his BeachTran company, which hopes to implement a monorail route between Clearwater Beach and downtown Clearwater by the end of next year. BeachTran features new technology put forth by a company called skyTran that utilizes two-to-four passenger elevated cars that are propelled using passive magnetic levitation. This form of transportation is not currently in use yet, although there are also plans for it in Abu Dhabi and Tel Aviv. The private vehicles would glide above the existing roadways, travelling at a speed of around 40 to 50 miles per hour. The cars would arrive and depart from a

being able to ride from Clearwater Beach to Raymond James Stadium in Tampa before the Super Bowl in 2021. Members of the Clearwater City Council have been mulling the feasibilty of elevated transit for over a year.

Madeira Beach City Commission to move forward with plan to obtain historic designation for Snack Shack MADEIRA BEACH - A plan spearheaded by Madeira Beach City Commissioner Nancy Oakley has been put forth to apply for a county-level historic designation for the beachfront Snack Shack building that was orignally built in 1934. The Archibald Park property, located at 15100 Gulf Blvd., and the log cabintype building that sits in the middle of it were deeded to the city in the 1970s with the caveat that it only be used for public recreation, particularly for veterans and families. In 2009, the city spent upwards of $200,000 to renovate the property, which was reopened in 2010.

Gasparilla Bowl: Battle at the Beach TREASURE ISLAND - Treasure Island will experience a bowl game invasion during the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl event week when the city hosts the Battle at the Beach. The invasion will take place at Gulf Front Park, 10400 Gulf Blvd, on Dec. 19 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free event will include both participating bowl teams, FIU and Temple, along with their bands, cheerleaders and dance squads, involved in friendly but fiercely competitive events. Returning for the 10th consecutive year is the highly popular player belly flop contest that always draws the largest crowds, along with the coveted bragging rights for the winner and his team. MUSIC Prepare to rock: Reverend Horton Heat, Dec. 20 By Daniel Holloway

B

ack in the day, we didn’t even know what “punkabilly” or “psychobilly” music was. But, lucky for us, Reverend Horton Heat did. And Dec. 20, Reverend Horton Heat brings his kick-ass take on the genre to St. Petersburg’s Jannus Live for Horton’s Holiday Hayride with Junior Brown and special guests The Blasters and Big Sandy. Formed in 1985, Reverend Horton Heat’s band exploded on the scene by playing gigs around their hometown of Dallas, Texas, mixing elements of country, punk, big band and rockabilly to create their own brand of unique music, described by the band as “country-fed punkabilly,” that took the world by storm. Reverend Horton Heat is the stage name of guitarist and lead vocalist Jim Heath, as well as the name of the band consisting of Heath, Jimbo Wallace on the upright bass and Scott Churilla on drums. Often imitated, but never duplicated, Reverend Horton Heat has continued to garner the support of both the underground rockabilly/psychobilly scene

“Reverend Horton Heat, he's great and plays the music he believes in and nothing else. Go see him or I'll kill you!” ~ The late Lemmy Kilmister, founder of Motorhead and mainstream critics alike, a feat not easily attained. Throughout the band's million-plus album-selling career, their music has been featured in countless TV shows, movies and commercials, and they continue to electrify audiences with their stage presence, rock 'n roll charisma and contagious

energy. The Rev promises to be a fun evening, so prepare to rock harder than you have ever rocked before and get to Jannus Live on Dec. 20, Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $27 in advance, $30 the day of the show. Jannus Live is located at 18 2nd St. N., St. Petersburg. For more information, visit jannuslive.com or call 727-896-6329.

The Roe Report By Cliff Roe Broker/Owner Roe Realty One of the most important reasons for choosing an agent is their ability to market your home. Since most Realtors had another career prior to real estate I decided to share one of my experiences. I was chosen to run a taskforce charged with combining 42 consumer products companies into a single sales and marketing department. As the largest company of its kind, it had the largest marketing budget. You know some of the brands; Tropicana Orange Juice, Shed's Margarine, Butter Ball Turkeys, etc. We had furniture lines, Avis rental cars, restaurant chains etc. I suspect I was picked because I had successfully introduced Ziploc Bags after management failed to get it off the ground. What I quickly realized was that the best preforming brands had diverse marketing

departments. The weaker brands had yes people who all thought alike. Everyone needs to be challenged or they lose creativity. Real estate is similar in that most agents do the same form of marketing; just listed and just sold postcards plus ads in luxury magazines. If they work for a franchise, the odds are they have a preset budget for each price point that they follow. I was hired to sell a property that had been listed by three other agents/firms who were only able to get offers of $750,000. We spent $7,000 on paint and staging and were able to get two full price offers of $1,200,000 in 24 hours. Small magazine ads are given only a fraction of a second to gain attention.

The Roe Report

ecent articles have been about the demand for homes outpacing the supply, forcing prices higher. Hurricane Irma just made it worse. Parts of the Keys were destroyed, but fortunately, reduced the storm to a category 4, while most of the state saw a 3 or less. It's too early to say that an already strong demand for homes will get even stronger. However, many homes have been damaged or destroyed. The first to receive relief will be from homes covered by insurance. Those who don't have flood insurance will have to wait on FEMA to process their claim.

Once claims are settled, finding a repair crew will be almost impossible, since the demand will far exceed the available labor. Florida, like Houston, will see many shysters arrive to take advantage of desperate homeowners. Make sure you and those you know are not hoodwinked. Since 2008, my partner Rebekah, and I have advised investors in the purchase of over 2,000 properties that were either repaired and rented or sold at a profit. In each case, we evaluated the value "as is", the cost to repair, and the value once completed. Our goal is to help those in

REBEKAH Z. MOOREHEAD AND CLIFF ROE

need because it's the right thing to do. We are available to talk to and advise anyone for free. All our listings and rental properties were photographed by drone within two days of the storm. We did this to help our clients prepare for their insurance claims. Now we are offering our services to anyone who needs help. Just give me/Cliff (727-6447209) or Rebekah (727-3855233) a call and schedule a time for one of us can meet with you. Or you can email us at Cliff@Roe-Realty.com. Sincerely,

Cliff
