ST. PETE BEACH - One thing’s for sure: people love their dogs. Recently, a group of St. Pete Beach dog owners approched the city commission, asking them to once again allow dogs at a beach area in Passa-Grille. A ban was implemented last year after complaints from locals of too many “non-resident” dogs visiting the beach. The location in question is a sandy beach area on the Intracoastal between First and Third avenues North in Pass-aGrille. Dogs would not be allowed on any other sand beach in the city, although some residents are also pushing for the establishment of a dog beach at Upham Beach. The new dog beach will come with more restrictions than in the past; most importantly, dogs will not be allowed to run free and must be leashed at all times. Dogs must also be licensed and up-to-date with

In Brief Treasure Island Spring Break festival slated for this month TREASURE ISLAND - This year, the Gulf Beaches Rotary Club is hosting their annual four-day Spring Break Festival, March 17-20, at the newly renovated Madeira Beach Recreation Field. Like previous years, there will be carnival rides, midway games, food and drink vendors and live music on an outdoor stage. Last year’s festival attracted over 12,000 people. All proceeds go back to the local community and donations are made to numerous worthwhile programs and charities. Visit www.gulfbeachesrotary.com for more information. immunizations, and dog owners will obviously be responsible for cleaning up after their pets. Several Pass-a-Grille residents opposed the formation of the dog beach, citing the number of dogs and their waste as health risks. However, city officials are confident the stricter regulations will make the dog beach a win-win for residents and visitors alike.

ST. PETE BEACH Months after 9-year-old Cameron Bullard was pulled under the water in Pass-a-Grille and drowned, Pinellas County commissioners are installing signs that warn beach-goers of the dangers of rip currents. Seventy-eight signs will soon be per-

PETE BEACH - Members of the St. Pete Beach City Commission recently lobbied Pinellas County commissioners to declare a part of the city “blighted” in order to receive funds for its Community Redevelopment Area (CRA). The city was seeking $50 million from the county, towards a total of $75 million, that would be spent over the next 30 years for various city projects, including the construction of a new library and upgrading underground utilities. The city would have ponied up the remaining $25 million. However, Pinellas commissioners basically said St. Pete Beach is on its own on this one, and implied the city could raise taxes in order to secure the necessary funding.

In Brief Redington Beach commissioners divided on future of short-term rentals REDINGTON BEACH - A proposed ordinance in Redington Beach has prompted a lengthy debate amongst town officials. The ordinance involves the regulation and licensing of properties that are leased as “short-term” rentals, or less than six months, in private homes. In order to remain licensed, the properties would have to pass an annual inspection, in addition to other regulations. Proponents of the ordinance feel it would force property owners to better

Other residents contend that the project will only help the city by boosting property values and attracting visitors. The project still faces final approval from the city commission, which seems likely. The commission will hold its a final vote on the project at the April 12 regular meeting.

IRB finally ready to move forward with undergrounding of utilities INDIAN ROCKS BEACH - In a move that has been years in the making, the Indian Rocks Beach City Commission has given the green light to move forward with the undergrounding of utility cables in a section of the city. The $4 million project is in the early planning stages and is expected to take three years to complete. Utility cables will be buried underground along Gulf Boulevard from around 6th Avenue, moving all the way south to the Indian Shores border. The work will include the main city intersection at Gulf Boulevard and Walsingham Road. The project will be funded by the Pinellas County Gulf Boulevard Beautification program.

I

t's important for a mayor to understand why people choose to live in Indian Rocks Beach: its uniqueness, small town charm, variety of folks who live here, small scale development (we've avoided being overwhelmed by tall condos), lots of great places to eat, a beautiful and relatively quiet beach, wonderful parks, volunteer spirit, and a general air of friendliness. We become more unique the more we stay fundamentally the same.

Indian Rocks Beach Mayor R.B. Johnson

Make your vote count! IRB Municipal Election March 15

I believe we have the most charming, eclectic beach town in Pinellas County, one where many different kinds of people can afford to live, and yet which attracts tourists because of the variety of our amenities and attractions (Historical Museum, Beach Art Center, Nature Preserve, restaurants galore, a clean and beautiful beach, etc.). As mayor, I try to listen objectively to everyone's point of view before making decisions on all issues, whether major or minor, and I believe cordiality and collegiality are very important during commission meetings, both among commissioners and when listening to the public. I am very accessible, and talk to folks all over town on a daily basis. I believe that we can gradually improve the quality of life in our city without radically altering the overall character of the place. Everyone loves what we have here, so I always say that it's important to avoid screwing it up! Preserve, preserve.

Jaunt: A short excursion or journey for pleasure. In the event you didn't think jaunt was a word. But, I mean, really, Motel 6? Yuck! Yes, I am a very big hotel snob. There are very few things that I am a snob about but hotels are at the top of the list. And just as important are the restaurants and bars inside these very nice hotels. I had a gym membership at the Sand Key Sheraton for over a decade that not only allowed my family and me access to the gym, but also to the tennis courts, the pool and, yes, the restaurants and bars. It wasn't until later that I realized that many, if not all, of these nicer hotels along the beach not only allow locals to frequent their restaurants and bars, but they encourage it. Thomas Rowe's Don CeSar Hotel, known as the very fitting "Pink Palace," opened on Jan. 16, 1928, with an extravagant party attended by Tampa and St. Petersburg's elite. The hotel quickly became a

favorite stomping ground for the rich and famous of the Jazz Age, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, Clarence Darrow, Al Capone, Lou Gehrig and Franklin D. Roosevelt. The Pink Palace continued to attract the rich and famous throughout the Great Depression, thanks in part to a deal with New York Yankees owner, Jacob Ruppert, to house his team there during spring training for three years. Fast forward to today and the Loews Don CeSar Hotel has honored its developer and founder, Thomas Rowe, by naming its newest bar and restaurant after him. The Rowe Bar is a sleek restaurant bar, sharing interior and exterior space to offer the most breathtaking sunsets right on the

The Rowe Bar 3400 Gulf Blvd. St. Pete Beach 727-360-1881 Gulf of Mexico. Simply spectacular. Yes, the interior is nice and comfortable, but we don't go to the beach to sit inside, so I insist you go to The Rowe Bar to catch a beautiful sunset and enjoy the incredible view of the Gulf of Mexico and the lush and lovely exterior décor. Did I really just use the word lovely? After learning The Rowe Bar had just opened at the Loews Don CeSar, I had to go check it out. The timing couldn't have been better. I arrived around 5:30, just in time to take it all in and order one of their special "Ades for any Age" cold beverages. I had heard a lot about them so I want to give them a try. I went with the Salted Watermelon. It was delicious, but I'm not stupid; I topped it off with an ice-cold Blue Moon with an orange slice. Ahhh, life is wonderful. After enjoying both of my beverages, I placed my food order, then sat back and enjoyed the sunset. God, I love our beaches. Hey, I was talking to God, not you. For dinner, I wanted to experience a couple of different items, so I went with the Wagyu burger and the ceviche.

Both were absolutely spectacular. A gentleman and his wife dining next to me told me that the calamari was out of this world. Hey, why couldn't they have told me that before I ordered? Think, people. In addition, they told me they come once a year from Boston (Go, Rays!) and they stay at the hotel every time. They said the staff remembers them and warmly greets them. No kidding! Hello, this is a Loews property. They are the crème de la crème of hotels. But again, what I think is so cool is that The Rowe Bar welcomes locals and anyone else who wants to experience great food and drinks, and, yes, our beautiful Florida sunsets. Bon appetit!

Restaurant News Local artist sues owner of Frenchy’s CLEARWATER BEACH - A decades-long friendship has gone sour amidst allegations that the owner of the Frenchy’s restaurant group used and profited off of the work of well-known local artist, Silas Beach, without Beach’s permission. Beach, whose real name is Silas Gatewood, has displayed his artwork all over Tampa Bay. He is even the person who designed the fish mile markers that line Gulf Boulevard from Pass-a-Grille to North Clearwater Beach. The walls of the Frenchy’s restaurants are covered with Beach’s artwork. Beach has now filed a lawsuit against Michael “Frenchy” Preston, the owner of five various Frenchy’s restaurants in Clearwater Beach, as well as other endeavors. The lawsuit centers around a fishbone image, drawn by Beach years ago. Beach used this fishbone image in his paintings and on his own merchandise, such as tshirts. At some point, Frenchy began buying these t-shirts, marking up the price and then selling them at his own retail store. Since then, the fishbone image has been

reproduced on all sorts of Frenchy’s merchandise. Beach contends that Frenchy never had permission or a license to use the copyrighted image, and has issued cease and desist orders, to no avail. Beach estimates that he is owed at least $1 million, and says that much of Frenchy’s success is due to him. Beach’s artwork is currently on display at Happy’s Bayou Bites in Dunedin.
