The Church of Scientology has pulled out all the stops to try to purchase a vacant lot currently owned by the Clearwater Marine Aquarium.

n its latest and probably final bid to purchase a 1.4 vacant parcel of the land from the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, the Church of Scientology has seriously upped the ante: to the tune of $15 million. The land in question is located at the corner of Pierce Street and Osceola Avenue in downtown Clearwater, in between City Hall and the Church’s Oak Cove retreat. The Aquarium originally purchased the land five years ago for $2.1 million. The plan was to move the Aquarium downtown, but they have since opted for a $50 million overhaul of their cur-

rent Island Estates facility instead. Church officials have been anxious to acquire the property for some time, saying they would like to build a pool, a playground and other amenities for Church members’ use. However, the CMA has been in talks with Clearwater officials for nearly two years to sell the land to the city. It will more than likely be utilized as part of the city’s Imagine Clearwater waterfront redevelopment plan that was approved by the city council in February. The city’s offer for the land stands at $4.25 million, $10.75 million less than the Church’s offer. The land was recently appraised at $4.5 million and $4.66

million. According to Aquarium CEO David Yates, the CMA has no interest in entertaining other offers and no intention of backing out of its agreement with the city. Scientology spokesman Ben Shaw

confirmed that this will be the Church’s last offer, saying that they cannot compete with the innapropriate relationship evidenced between the city and the CMA. Clearwater city councilmembers voted on the purchase on April 20.

Political turmoil still rules in Madeira Beach By Beth Ludwig

ewly elected commissioners and the new Madeira Beach mayor hit the ground running at their first meeting as city officials, with plenty of residents in attendance to show their continued disapproval of the previous commission’s decisions regarding two big hotel developments in the city, the Madeira Beach Town Center and the Holiday Isles Marina. Over the course of the contentious three-hour meeting, several heated discussions took place, primarily over a proposal by new Commissioner Nancy Oakley to fire City Clerk Cheryl McGrady Crawford, who recently married City Manager Shane Crawford. After an hour of debate, the commission ultimately decided to table the decision until a workshop meeting at a later date.

The commission also needed to elect a new vice mayor at their meeting. This, too, was met with contention and opposition. The position of vice mayor has typically been awarded to commissioners on a rotating basis by district. This term, the position should have gone to District 1 Commissioner Terry Lister, however, the new commisioners, Oakley and John Douthirt, along with new Mayor Maggie Black, banded together in their voting, choosing instead to elect Douthirt to the position in a 3-2 vote. After the vote, Lister said, “This is a heck of a way to start out.” The commission did agree to hold weekly workshop meetings for the foreseeable future to hammer out the city’s issues, and the public is invitied to attend.

St. Pete Beach approves Sugar Sands ST. PETE BEACH - The St. Pete Beach City Commission recently gave the thumbs up to the owners of the Tradewinds Island Grand Resort to build a new 217-room hotel at the site of the former Coral Reef hotel, located at 5750 Gulf Blvd. The new hotel property, to be called Sugar Sands at TradeWinds Island Grand Beach Resort, will feature a parking garage with room for over 800 vehicles, timeshares, a fitness center

Sand Key condo owners at war with homeowner’s association By Beth Ludwig

ive condominium owners at the gulffront Crescent Beach Club in Sand Key recently filed a lawsuit against the condo complex and the property’s homeowner’s association over a battle the groups have been waging over short-term rentals. The complex, which is managed by Associa Gulf Coast, has a policy in place that stipulates short-term rentals must be a minimum of two weeks in duration. However, the association alleges that the five condo owners—Jeff and Gina Paglialonga; Joyce Enterprises Inc.; McCullough Properties LLC; Jeffrey Lemajeur, as trustee of the Jeffrey W. Lemajeur Revocable Trust; and Deborah Lemajeur, as trustee of the Deborah M. Lemajeur Revocable Trust—have been violating that stipulation, saying some have even advertised online that shorter stays are available. The homeowner’s association filed an arbitration action against each individual condo owner in question, in an attempt to reach a resolution without

In Brief “Mimosa rule” passes in North Redington Beach North Redington Beach - After Pinellas County officials did away with the so-called “Blue Law” that prevented the sale of alcoholic beverages anywhere in the county between 2:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. on Sundays, North Redington Beach Town Commissioners recently followed suit by passing their own ordinance on its

formal legal action. In response, the condo owners filed their lawsuit, saying that they are unfairly unable to rent their properties sooner than every 14 days, even if tenants choose to leave before the two-week period of their lease is up.

The lawsuit, filed in Pinellas County Circuit Court, is asking the court to determine if the lease term stipulation is legal. According to public records, none of the five groups of owners live at the Crescent Beach Club complex.

he usual subject is why to buy real estate, but this month, I want to discuss why you want to live in Pinellas County. In the summer, the waters of the Gulf and Tampa Bay hold down our temperature making this a much more desirable place to live than the inland areas. In the winter, frost and freeze warnings don't include us, unless they extend below Sarasota County. Again, it's because we are located between the warm waters of the Gulf and Tampa Bay. Bugs are a problem in any climate that doesn't have a freeze to kill off a large percentage of the population. Pinellas is only twelve miles wide. The winds constantly shift back and forth, leaving much of our bug population stranded over open water. I'm told there was a hurricane that came up Tampa Bay back in 1912. I

When we do get a heavy rain, it tends to form over the Gulf and travel west to east. ur Gulf waters are emerald green because we don't have fresh water runoffs. When you travel the state, you notice the Atlantic is dark. This is because of the freshwater rivers and streams that carry silt to the ocean. In addition to the temperature, weather, and beauty of the area, we are close to most of the major attractions in FLorida. Disney, Universal, and Busch Gardens are favorites, with Lego Land getting better known all the time. We have theaters of all sizes featuring everything from Broadway shows to local artists. Groupers: Old Florida charm with steamed shrimp to die for

isten up, my dear readers and friends, there is a new seafood joint in Indian Rocks Beach that I am demanding you go to. Yes, it is that good and it is actually that AWESOME. Stupid word, I know, but that's all I've got for now. Back to this new joint. It's called Groupers and their steamed shrimp is freaking amazing. Everything on the menu is also ridiculously cheap. Or should I say inexpensive? From their $1.75 domestic draft beer, including Shock Top, to their $3.00 glasses of wine straight from Italy. The best thing is that the wine is poured straight from a keg, which they say cuts down on the sulfites. It's crazy cool. But back to their shrimp. For only $10.50, you get a pound of spicy, steamed shrimp that you can dip in either butter or cocktail sauce. It is so, so good. You have to order it. Grouper's grouper fish tacos (see what I did there?) are also to-die-for. You get two tacos filled with grouper, cabbage and pico de gallo for $6.50.

How you gonna beat that? In addition, Groupers offers a grouper sandwich for only $7.50 (Yes, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s REAL grouper), snow crab legs for $14.50 a pound, mussels served with garlic toast for $7.00, and the most amazing Grouper Gumbo. Yes, I love this place. The concept is casual, where you order at the counter and they bring you your food. Want another beer or soda, you go up to the drink line. In other words, you are on your own, which is actually pretty cool, because you don't have to tip a server, but you are welcome to throw a couple of bucks into the tip bucket at the bar. The atmosphere is inviting, with a

After 40 years perfecting his craft as a custom painter for high-end homes, the founder of Dennis White Painting has now partnered with two men to bring something very special to those fortunate few. "A year ago, I partnered with Caleb Gasway to continue to build on our reputation of serving the customers who have very high expectations and allow us to meet them. We have professional painters who work for us.They are fabulous, very conscientious in what they do. We have brought our business to a whole other level," said Dennis White. White, who had done work at the Belleview Biltmore Hotel and numerous upscale homes in Belleair, was then given an opportunity to purchase some of the remaining heart pine wood that was originally used to build the Biltmore in the late 1800s.

"We partnered with David Coster, who is a professional wood worker. He and I have been working together for over 30 years. The guy is just an absolute professional. David and I are now working together to build tabletops and bases together with the reclaimed wood from the Belleview Biltmore. Everything is hand-

made, custom made to order for each customer.The customer can tell us how they would like it designed, and they can also personally pick the wood from the Biltmore that they want us to use for their table," said White. Knowing the history of the Belleview Biltmore Hotel and its rich tradition, Dennis and his partners knew that the remaining parts of the Biltmore, the wood, had to be treated as respectfully as the Biltmore itself. "Being able to take the original wood from the Biltmore and turn it into a custom-made table for a customer is truly a love of labor for us," said White. With wood lengths of up to 20 feet long and a minimum weight of 400 pounds,White said they can turn the Biltmore wood into sofa tables, coffee tables, dining room tables, conference tables and anything else the customer can envision. Operating on a first-come, first-served basis, White says the turnaround time is anywhere between six to eight weeks, so he stressed not to wait too long if interested.
