Homosassa Special Water District ready to go head-to-head over possible pollution threat HOMOSASSA - The Homosassa Special Water District is preparing for an April hearing against the Southwest Florida Water Management District (known as Swiftmud) and Florida's Turnpike Enterprise before the state's Division of Administrative Hearings. The pending litigation pertains to the proposed location of retention ponds in the construction of the Suncoast Parkway 2, a 13-mile extension of the original Suncoast Parkway that was opened in 2001. The water district has stated concerns about maintaining the quality and safety of the city's water supply with the increased potential of groundwater pollution. The introduction of additional traffic is always a concern for the viability of a safe
water supply. However, the Suncoast Parkway 2 project is especially disquieting, as the proposal currently offers questionable contract plans. The parkway will be accompanied by three "dry" retention ponds as a means of stormwater and groundwater storage; two of these ponds are in close proximity to the district's Peach Orchard well field, which produces more than seven million gallons of water a day for Homosassa residents. The Homosassa Special Water District has expressed concern about the introduction of hazardous materials into the city's water supply with the increased flow of traffic and potential for accidents and spillage. The proposal aims to connect the major urban areas of the state, meaning that more carcinogenic materials like
gasoline, solvents and other industrial chemicals will be passing through the city and potentially seeping into the groundwater. Additionally, the district questions the accountability of Florida's Turnpike Enterprise in the event of a hazardous catastrophe and asks that the enterprise be charged with providing clean, drink-

Citrus County is known as a tourist magnet, mainly due to the beloved manatee. For decades, people from around the globe have traveled to Crystal River to enjoy the local scenery and get up close and personal with the area's manatees. CRYSTAL RIVER - However, some issues have recently arisen that are directly connected to Citrus County becoming a "tourist attraction" in terms of vacations in Florida. A lot of the amenities locals are used to being able to enjoy have become less enjoyable, certainly for one's wallet, at least. As of 2016, some significant changes are being made at local city destinations, and though it is ultimately to better the quality of the parks and land, it is somewhat unsettling for those who have long enjoyed the use of these public locations. Three Sisters Springs is most likely the biggest change. This nature preserve
In Brief Save Crystal River Tallahassee Excursion CRYSTAL RIVER - There is currently a proposal by local residents to restore the canals in the residential section of the bay and springs in Crystal River. The group, known as "Save Crystal River," is focused on raising public awareness of the removal of an invasive and damaging blue-green algae known as Lyngbya, while also obtaining government funding and private donations to proceed with its removal. The project, which has already begun trial runs with promising results, is focused on the residential canals, and will last for the next seven years. The process has been tested in other waterways in the state and yielded positive results with the successful riddance of the algae. Lyngbya will be removed from the floors of the canal, and also from sea walls and other aquatic vessels. If this is successful, the group asserts that the removal of Lyngbya will serve to promote economic growth in the area, due to the waterways being returned to their once pristine condition. Approximately 40 members of Save
became open to the public in recent years, after being privately owned for decades. It was exciting for tourists and locals alike to be able to utilize the land to view the springs and the hot spot for our sea cow friends. Now, though, there is a catch to the use of the land. It can only be accessed by the city's trolley cars and there is a fee of $15 for adults. The springs are still accessible by water; however, to enjoy the boardwalks and nature preserve, the trolley must be ridden. There is no public parking available, and currently, entrance on foot is not permitted. When the city acquired the property, it
By Candi Cadwell Crystal River took a trip to Tallahassee, where they spoke with various members of the state government to present their case for obtaining the necessary funding to continue the project. The vice president of the organization, Steve Lamb, said he felt the proposal was very well received and he anticipates positive results from the group's meeting. Lamb feels that the passion invoked by members of the group to those in a position to aid in the project was heard and that the state will assist in the funding to help preserve the waterways and benefit the community. A decision has not yet been reached, however, if the proposal is accepted, the group will receive funding close to $40 million over the next seven years.
seemed to the locals that it would be a new opportunity to enjoy a popular landmark. However, many residents feel the $15 entrance fee is prohibitive to locals. While it may be an amount that is in line with what vacationers may expect to pay, locals are not happy about it. Another change that is making locals unhappy is the implementation of parking fees at the local beach, Hunter Springs. Beginning this year, the City Park, which is one of the only public beaches where
the springs can be accessed, will be charging $5.00 for parking, which must be paid electronically onsite via a credit or debit card. This policy is very new and the revenue will assist with plans to renovate the public park, in addition to local funds allotted from the county tax revenue. However, many local residents are concerned that it may impact the number of people using the public park in the future.

invernessnews Citrus County Sheriff’s Office warns of theft scheme targeting seniors By Kimberly Hays
INVERNESS - Local law enforcement agencies are warning residents to beware of a theft scheme being conducted by three black females, preying especially on the elderly. The three women will approach an individual, and then, while two of the women up start a conversation with the victim, the third grabs their wallet. One incident took place at a Publix in Inverness on January 29, 2016, when two of the suspects started talking to the victim and the third took her wallet from her purse, which was sitting in her shopping cart, getting away with two debit cards and $500 in cash. The cards are believed to have been used a short time later at a local Office Max, where the suspects charged $1574.47 in products and gift cards.

The Valerie Theatre: Everything old is new again By Kimberly Hays
INVERNESS - The Valerie Theater, in downtown Inverness, was built in 1926 by Pearl Maddox, who named the theater after her daughter. This was during the silent film era; the first movie shown at the Valerie was "The Only Woman," starring Norma Talmadge. A pianist accompanied the film and children performed on stage during intermission. In 1939, a fire destroyed the inside of the theater. It's believed that the fire was started by a stove kept behind the screen to warm the theater. The theater was quickly rebuilt and it continued to show movies and plays, and was even used by Elvis Presley and his produce to watch film clips when he was in Inverness shooting his movie "Follow That Dream" in 1962. News stories also show that Elvis broke the marquee at the Valerie while tossing a football in front of the building, and he wrote a check to have the broken panels fixed. The theater eventually closed in 1987, and it sat vacant until it was purchased by the

Cracker’s Bar, Grill & Tiki Can we just call it Cracker’s?
A
llow me to make a confession before I get started. The images you see in this dining feature were not shot by me. I know, sue me. It is the first time I have never shot my own images in a dining feature in over a gazillion years and, yes, gazillion is a word. No, I'm not saying the images that we used aren't good, but I'll just say I didn't shoot them. Moving on. Cracker's! I freakin' love the joint. If you live in Citrus County and have never been to Crackers, what the hell? First of all, I love a view of the water when I dine. LOVE IT! I mean, seriously, who doesn't? Cracker's Bar, Grill & Tiki has an amazing view of Kings Bay and damn good food to boot. The service, on the other hand, is a toss up. I have been there a handful of times, and to be honest, a couple times, the server wasn't as warm and fuzzy as I would like or expect from a restaurant in the South. And, yes, my dear readers, Crystal River is in the South and all of us are dang proud of it. But out of fairness, I have had great service there also. Hey, maybe I
caught those couple of servers on a bad day, but their bad day isn't my problem. Cracker's is too good to let a bad server ruin my experience, so thank god it only happened one or two times. Cracker's food is amazing. Every time I have been there, it has been awesome. A few of my favorites are the Fire Cracker Burger (bacon, cheddar cheese and chipotle sauce topped with jalapeños); the Grouper Reuben, which you can order grilled, fried, or blackened; and the fish tacos (grilled, fried or
Cracker’s Bar, Grill & Tiki 502 NW 6th St. Crystal River 352-795-3999 blackened
haddock, with melted cheddar cheese and homemade slaw in two tortillas). They were all absolutely incredible. My wife has had the Cobb salad and loved it. They truly just have a very good menu with amazing taste.
With spring quickly approaching, you'll definitely want to sit on the deck out back and take in the amazing water view. But whatever you do, don't order the small beer. I did the first time I was there and they might as well have served it in a sippie cup. Geez, I felt embarrassed even drinking out of that tiny cup. Take my word for it: order the man's size beer. Overall, as you can tell, I love Cracker's. If you haven't been, get your ass in there and you can thank me later.
