Siesta Key News Shoreline renourishment in progress for South Siesta Key For the second time in less than a decade, Sarasota County has begun to renourish the shoreline of South Siesta Key, stretching from Point of Rocks to two miles south, including Turtle Beach. Mechelle Rene

Stickney Point Bridge repairs wrapping up The repair project should extend the bridge’s life for at least 10 years. Mechelle Rene

T

he Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT), with Coastal Marine Construction, Inc., has just about wrapped up repairs to the Stickney Point Bridge, the southern access point for Siesta Key and its worldfamous beach. Via a $5.3 million construction project begun in April 2015, FDOT is endeavoring to extend the life of the bridge another 10 years. During the next decade, they will seek another long-term solution as the 48 year old draw-bridge nears the end of its service life. Built in 1968, the Stickney Point Bridge

remains safe to traffic though many repairs were necessary to extend the life of this portal to the Key on Little Sarasota Bay. Some of this construction included electrical component repairs, fixing cracked concrete on the bridge and seawalls, bridge deck and grating repairs, sidewalk improvements, painting and improvements to the Control/Bridge Tender House. The forecasted completion date of this month is upon us and FDOT is hopeful that they will be able to hold to this projected wrap-up date. Most of the work was done between the hours of 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. for the convenience of residents and visitors. While the Stickney Point Bridge will remain a busy thoroughfare for vehicular traffic, and boat traffic can be heavy on weekends and holidays, the repair project will hopefully bring residents and guests another 10 years use of the bridge.

his $21.5 million project, unanimously approved by county commissioners, will add approximately 700,000 cubic yards of sand and 1.1 acres of dune vegetation. They are hoping this will stave off the constant and alarming erosion that has been compromising the shoreline at a rate of 3.7 feet per year. In some places, that has reached 14 to 18 feet per year. The last nourishment project conducted in 2007 cost just under half the current project and was projected to hold for 10 years, but due to the alarming yearly loss of shoreline, the Florida Department of Environmental Protection is deeming the shore "critically eroded." This project will be funded largely by the Tourist Development Capital Improvement Program, as well as a special taxing district that has also been created for property owners in the area affected, a grant from the Department of Environmental Protection, a half-million dollars remaining from the first resident tax back in 2007, and settlement money with Fisherman's Haven Beach Homeowner's Association. Sand for the project is being pumped in from an offshore site approximately 9

miles away. County commissioners are hoping it will extend the shoreline another 120 to 160 feet from where it is now. The Sarasota County Public Works Department began this project in January and will have to complete it by April 30 due to sea turtle nesting season, beginning May 1.

In Brief Battle over dredging continues SIESTA KEY - In other beach renourishment news, a new, unbiased study commissioned by Sarasota County says there’s no guarantee that Siesta Key’s beach won’t be negatively impacted if dredging commences in Big Pass. The City of Sarasota and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers plan on dredging Big Pass as early as this winter and using the sand to replenish Lido Key. However, since Big Pass has never

been dredged before, Siesta residents are concerned about how this will affect the natural flow of sand in the area.

Longboat Key News Residents concerned about hotel planned for north LBK Traffic worries and overcrowding at the beach among chief complaints at recent meeting. Mina Sinai

loridays Development Co. presented their proposal to build a 120room hotel on eight north-end parcels in Longboat Key to residents at a March 15 neighborhood outreach meeting. The hotel would be built at the 6900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, that spans from Broadway to Whitney Beach Plaza. Around 50 north-end Longboat Key residents attended the meeting to voice their concerns over the proposed plans. Many fear that hotel guests will eventually make their way into the adjacent residential neighborhoods and also crowd the public beach area. Although residents are concerned about the size of the hotel, Floridays representa-

tives who attended the meeting emphasized that the hotel needed to be that size in order to be a success. Floridays CEO, Angus Rogers, and project manager, James Brearley, provided details about the construction of the hotel. The development company stated that the

hotel will be upscale, however, it will most likely have a three-star rating because of the absence of room service. Nightly rates would average around $200, and the plans include parking to accommodate 140 guests as well as 20 employees at any given time.

Commissioner Pat Zunz advised that residents should support the development since it would most likely lead to higher residential property values. She also cautioned against waiting around for another developer to build something smaller, saying, "It's been 10 years since anyone's been interested in buying those properties." Floridays hopes that residents will eventually come around to realize that the development could spark growth in local busi-

nesses on the north end and completely revitalize this area. In order to begin construction, Floridays must first get the public's approval to have the property be rezoned to tourism use. In a show of cooperation, Floridays did revise plans based on resident feedback to include a full-service coffee bar, breakfast and poolside bar that will hopefully keep hotel guests looking for restaurants off the road and out of the residents' way.

Longboat Key News

In Brief By Mina Sinai Longboat named 6th smartest city in Florida LONGBOAT KEY - The website Zippia recently ranked Longboat Key as the sixth smartest city in all of Florida. The only cities to rank higher than Longboat Key were Palm Beach, Key Biscayne, Gulf Breeze, Neptune Beach and coming in at the top of the list, Sanibel. The ranking was based on both the percentage of adults with at least a high school education and the percentage of teenagers that are high school dropouts. The reported percentages for Longboat Key were 3.2 percent and 0.0 percent respectively, earning the city one of the top spots. Beach renourishment projects begin LONGBOAT KEY - The first phase of a major beach renourishment project spanning the island of Longboat Key got underway earlier this month. Up to 100 trucks a day started hauling and dumping sand where it’s needed on the beaches in the mid-section of the key.

Colony board agrees to redevelopment plan LBK residents hope to revitalize deteriorating property. Mina Sinai

L

ast month, the board of the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association voted unanimously to begin working with an Orlando developer on redevelopment plans. The decision could mark the beginning of a new era for the resort that has been closed since 2010. Unicorp National Developments Inc. now needs to secure support from at least 80 percent of the resort's unit owners in order to move forward with the proposed redevelopment. Both Unicorp and the Colony Beach & Tennis Resort Association hope to come to an agreement on redevelopment plans in the next four months so they can present a final plan to the owners for a vote. The property has been slowly deteriorating since its shutdown, becoming an eyesore on an otherwise beautiful strip of hotels and private residences on Gulf of Mexico Drive. Other developers have previously pitched

ideas to redevelop the Colony, including MW Corp. led by Manfred Welfonder, and Lutgert Cos, a developer based out of Naples. Together, these developers hoped to invest $200 million to build hotel rooms, restaurants and retail spaces. The new agreement with Unicorp will most likely shut down these other offers. If unit owners do vote to approve, the plan

to construct a 180-room hotel alongside upscale condos will be presented to town officials by the end of the year. After hearing of the association's vote, Mayor Jack Duncan expressed hope that the deal would be approved, citing concerns that the condition of the Colony's land is worsening with every year that it goes untouched.

Downtown Sarasota News New construction rental market is booming In Brief By Scott Lancaster

Plans have been set in motion for the addition of several new rentals in downtown Sarasota.

Downtown hotel development prompts talks about congestion

ones Development company, along with Biter Enterprises, is set to begin building HuB Lofts, a housing complex on the corner of Second Street, in the fall of this year. The complex will be a five-story building which will hold 97 lofts at around $1,000 a month. They will feature work space and offices, targeting the young professional demographic; considerably more affordable for year round living downtown. While the city is currently conducting traffic reviews around the complex, the design for the build is nearing completion and permits will be applied for in May. Nearby, on the 700 block of Lemon Avenue, South Carolina-based developer Greystar has plans for a 4-story, 286-unit

apartment building, including a 448-space parking garage. Initially called 7th Street Apartments, the more aptly named Elan Rosemary Apartments will begin construction within a few weeks and should be completely by the beginning of 2018. The 128-year-old Rosemary District will soon be seeing a revitalization with sever-

al other housing projects and commercial projects under way. Within the next 5 years, the rapidly growing real estate should take the pressure off of the increased cost of living for those looking to reside in downtown Sarasota. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the Sarasota metropolitan area is the 11th fastest growing region in the nation.

SARASOTA - According to Visit Sarasota County, there are an additional 1,000 hotel rooms currently in the works in downtown Sarasota. This will translate to over 125,000 more visitors needed each year to maintain the current demand for lodging. The idea of more visitors to Sarasota is good for the local economy, but residents have their concerns. Chief among them is traffic congestion. But the city and county have answered their concerns with plans for the future, including more roundabouts and other countermeasures. City officials see the latest wave of development as a sign of the continued economic recovery, and think the city of Sarasota has an opportunity to keep its vibrant feel, while growing with the times.

he proposed pathway, the AMI SUNTrail, will travel from the Anna Maria Island Pier to Longboat Pass. It will include two 11-foot drive lanes with a 10-foot bike lane on one side and an 8-foot pedestrian walkway on the other side. A pathway such as this will take some time, which is why there is currently a proposed end date some time in 2040. However, the AMI SUNTrail

could be completed prior to 2040. The plan is currently divided into three phases. The first phase will take up to a year's time, the second phase could take up to 5 years and the last phase (executing the construction of the trail) will take about 20 years. The plan was adopted in 2015 and city commissioners still have every intention to move forward with it.

HOLMES BEACH - On March 22, city commissioners voted for a 5 percent business tax increase. The final hearing and vote will be held on April 12. The proposed tax increase will affect island businesses across the board, from restaurants to hotels and salons. Shuttle services will also be required to pay a business tax. Businesses will be required to pay their city taxes annually.

By Raven Alexis There is currently construction being done on the Anna Maria Island Bridge, as well other locations on the island. As a result of the added congestion, beach city officials recently met to discuss ways to cut down on traffic snarls in their respective communities. Some of their possible solutions included the inclusion of express bus service and a shuttle service for beachgoers, and better synchronization of traffic signals. The group will meet again on April 20 at 2:00 p.m., at Holmes Beach City Hall.

Construction projects to slow down traffic ANNA MARIA ISLAND - Expect slower traffic in Anna Maria Island with the increase of tourists and the undergoing of construction projects.

Dining Feature

The Feast Fit for a king... and queen.

T

here are two restaurants that simply amaze me. How so, you ask? Each is located inside a strip mall, or center, if you will. Both places have an amazing chef and both have an absolutely amazing atmosphere. OK, OK, I'll tell you the names of the places. The first one is called E&E Stakeout Grill, in Pinellas County. It rests between the two affluent communities of Belleair and Belleair Bluffs. Probably one of the top three steak joints in Pinellas. The restaurant recently did an entire renovation of the interior and dumped boatloads of money on the remodel. The other restaurant that I want to speak of in depth is in this area, thank god for all of us, in Holmes Beach. A stone's throw from anywhere in Sarasota or Manatee counties. Allow me to cut to the chase. The place is freaking awesome. Delicious food and an absolutely beautiful, yet inviting and warm, interior. In fact, a recent renovation has also taken place at this restaurant. OK, I won't leave you in suspense. It's The Feast. Like E&E, The Feast has an amazing menu; actually better than E&E, to be truthful.

This was probably the most difficult time I have ever had in choosing what to order, because, truly, everything sounded so good. And keep in mind, folks, I went into this dining feature knowing I was going to order an appetizer and two meals, and I still had a difficult time pulling the trigger on what two entrees to go with. The appetizer, however, was an easy choice. I went with the Grouper Bites, bits of fried grouper served with either Cajun remoulade, firecracker or tartar sauce. They were out of this world. And I'm not a huge fan of fried foods, but I had to get them and I'm glad I did. Awesome. I know. I use

The Feast 5406 Marina Dr. Holmes Beach 941-778-5092

that word a lot. But, hey, great word, right? For my entrees, I teetered back and forth between several dishes. I finally narrowed it down to the Australian Wagyu Burger (1/2 pound grilled Wagyu beef burger, with a choice of cheese and an optional topping of bacon, mushrooms or caramelized onion); and the Pulled Pork Sandwich (House smoked, shredded and served with Sweet Baby Ray's BBQ Sauce). Yeah, right? And also the Margherita Pizza (thinly sliced vine ripe tomatoes, basil, Buffalo mozzarella and olive oil with mozzarella cheese) caught my attention. As did the Seafood Trio (Alaskan Pollock, Key West Pink Shrimp and Jumbo Scallops). I was told the hogfish, one of their daily specials, was out of this world,

but I was pretty much already set on my decision. I went with the burger and the Seafood Trio, and how happy I was with my choices. The burger was cooked to perfection and was simply incredible. As far as the Seafood Trio, come on, what's not to love about scallops, Key West pink shrimp and Alaskan pollock? The sauce they were served in was so delicious, perfect for dipping bread, if that's your thing. And of course, I had to fit in a cup of the Lobster Bisque, prepared with lobster, sherry and heavy cream. Delish! Allow me to share something with you, my dear and beloved readers. I love a restaurant where I can feel comfortable and welcome and also have the most amazing food. And that place, my friends, is The Feast. Give 'em a shot. You can thank me later.
