LONGBOAT KEY - After years of litigation, the Town of Longboat Key is finally ready to say goodbye to the decaying buildings that were once the setting for The Colony Beach and Tennis Resort. The Colony was closed in 2010 due to financial issues, but found new life when Orlando-based Unicorp National Developments Inc. recently announced it had closed on the 17-acre property for $22 million. According to Unicorp CEO Chuck Whittall, demolition is proceeding for several buildings on the property, including the former conference center, the restaurant, spa, and maintenance and laundry facilities, as well as others
that are also visible from Gulf of Mexico Drive. Although groundbreaking on the project is still probably a couple of years away, Whittall has big plans for the

resort with 180 hotel rooms, 180 luxury condo units and 67 timeshare units. Though some residents have expressed concern about potential traffic problems once the resort is open, Whittall said they will operate a free trol-
ley service to hopefully alleviate some of the possible congestion. The project anticipates the need for 300 permanent employment positions. Unicorp expects to open the resort by New Year’s Eve 2020.

Longboat Key News
In Brief By Ashley Lowe 2016 continues to be banner year for sea turtle nests LONGBOAT KEY - With over two months remaining in the season, Mote Marine Laboratory sea turtle biologists have documented a record 1,100 turtle nests on Longboat Key so far this year. Dozens of nests have already hatched, but officals advise residents to remain vigilant in their efforts to help the tiny hatchlings reach the Gulf of Mexico by keeping the beach clear of obstacles and turning beachfront lights out at night. Hotel project gets a name LONGBOAT KEY - The controversial hotel project proposed by Floridays Development Co. for the north end of Longboat Key now has a name: the North End Hotel & Beach Club. The hotel, featuring 120 rooms on 2.6 acres, would be built at the 6900 block of Gulf of Mexico Drive, that spans from Broadway to Whitney Beach Plaza, if it’s approved by voters and the town commission.
South end sand renourishment underway L’Ambiance to see first batches of New Pass sand Ashley Lowe
T
he New Pass Dredging and Beach Nourishment Project got underway this month with the arrival of Norfolk Dredging Company’s 150-foot long cutterhead-pipeline hydraulic dredge, called the Pullen. The Pullen will dredge sand from the New Pass channel borrow area, then the sand will be delivered to the beach via a submerged pipeline to the project’s southern boundary of L’Ambiance Condominium. Crews will then begin building the beach heading northward to Regent Place. Approximately 200,000 cubic yards of sand will be placed. Nearly 200 sea turtle nests were relocated in advance of this project so they were not buried under the new sand.

The New Pass portion of the project is expected to be completed on or about Sept. 15, weather permitting. Once the south end dredging and sand placement is complete, the dredging operations with the Pullen will move to the north end of the Key, using sand
from Longboat Pass to fill two critically eroded areas on the north end of Longboat Key. Dredging operations will be occurring 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to complete the work as quickly as possible.

FDOT discusses plans for Cortez Bridge Scott Lancaster
T
he Florida Department of Transportation recently hosted a meeting for the community to discuss options for repairing or replacing the aging Cortez Bridge that connects Anna Maria Island to the mainland. According to the project manager for the bridge, Tony Sherrard, the options include a 21-foot vertical clearance drawbridge, a 35-foot vertical clearance drawbridge, a 65-foot vertical clearance fixed bridge and a no-build repair option. At a previous workshop, FDOT had proposed a 45-foot vertical clearance
drawbridge, but revised that to the 35foot option when several people objected to the higher drawbridge. According to Sherrard, the 21-foot drawbridge will not serve to reduce traffic congestion, as it will still require the same amount of bridge openings to allow boats to pass through. However, the 35-foot option would equate to about 30 percent fewer openings, a compromise that seemed to appeal to the most people. According to FDOT, the condition of the bridge is anticipated to deteriorate further as the structure has exceeded its 50-year service life. The bridge was built in 1956. Dining Feature
Amore Restaurant Elegance has never tasted so good.
T
here are very few places, OK, restaurants, that leave me with the "WOW" factor: that when I leave, I go, damn, that place was awesome. Well, guess what? Amore Restaurant is one of those places. But it didn't start that way, because when I pulled into the parking lot of the restaurant, which is just east of the Publix in Longboat Key, I noticed brown palm fronds all over the parking lot and in the landscaping. Not a good sign. My guess is the management company for Publix and the other shops in the plaza is to blame. Hey, I'm picky and I'm a snob and I don't deny it. I want the place looking perfect. The good news is, that was the only negative issue during my dining experience. When I entered the restaurant, I immediately registered a restaurant rich in tradition. For someone like me, who takes it all in, the interior design of Amore will take you back to the days when restaurants had glamorous dĂŠcor, with crown
molding, beautiful tables and rich color throughout the restaurant. I requested a table alongside a window so I could enjoy the early evening light and I was quickly approached by an older gentleman with a strong accent who was only fitting for the restaurant. He had the waiter apron and the whole nine yards. Wait, does that make sense? Regardless, he took my drink order and was off. In no time flat, he returned with my cold cerveza and told me the specials of the day.
Amore Restaurant 555 Bay Isles Pkwy Longboat Key 941-383-1111
As I often do, I like to order two entrees to get a better feel for the restaurant. I went with both of the items my server recommended: the Chilean Seabass Cartoccio (baked in parchment paper with potatoes, olives and tomatoes) and the Lamb Shank (braised with Nebbiola wine and vegetables served with saffron risotto). OMG, both dishes were simply out of this world. Cooked and prepared to perfection. I can't say enough about both entrees. The seabass was so tender and delicious, and the lamb shank was
simply incredible. Hey I know, simply twice, but it was and they were. Amore also offers a variety of fresh pasta, such as Lasagna All'Emiliana, the Ravioli of the Day, and Linguini Frutti di Mare (clams, mussels, and calamari in a garlicky tomato sauce). Pacific Wild Salmon, Veal Piccatta, Chicken Rollatini and sirloin steak are other favorite items offered on the menu amongst other great choices. What I found possibly the most amazing about my entire experience were the reasonable prices at Amore Restaurant, to dine in an elegant restaurant with the some of the best food in the Sarasota area. ~ Bon appetit!
