FaizaEbrahim’srelationshipwith stationerystartedearlyoninher life.Herfatherspentmostofhis careeratWaltonsStationery Company,andhewasalways veryenthusiasticabouttheindustry.

Sheconsidersherselfextremely blessedwhenitcomestofamily.She comesfromaclose-knitfamilyofsix–itwasher,herparents,twosistersand abrother.“Unfortunatelymybrother andfatherhavepassedonbutIam veryclosetomymotherandsisters.

Theyhavealwaysbeenasourceof supportandmotivationformeandI wouldnothavehadthesuccessIhave todayifitwerenotfortheirloveand support”.

Herfather’spassionforsalesand stationerymadeanimpressiononher whenshewasyoung.Assomeonewith acreativeside,itwasnaturalforherto studyFashionDesign.“When approachingmycareer,mypassionfor salesaswellascreatinganddesigning productsledmetofillpositionsinsales indifferentstationeryitemsfrom cartridgestolabels,”shesays.She eventuallyendedupdesigning productsforCTPinhercurrentroleas ProductManagerfordiariesand journals.

Shesaysthat,inadditiontoher academicachievementswhichinclude, FashionDesignandMarketing Managementdegrees,shehasalso managedtopositionherselfasa ProductManager.ThispositionatCTP Stationeryallowshertodesignsought afterindustryproducts.

Shehasbigdreamsforthenextfive years.“Myfive-yeargoalistobe runningoperationsforaleading stationerycompanylikeCTP Stationery.Academically,Iwouldliketo achievemyMBA,”shesays.Withher mottoinlifebeing“alwaysaimhigherto bethebestthatyoucouldbe”thisis certainlywithinreach.

Journalsarestillpopular.

Havingbeenintheindustryawhile, Faizasaysthatalthoughtechnology hastakenovermostindustriesand replacedvarioustangiblestationery products,manytraditionalstationery productssuchasfilesandnotebooks havemaintainedtheirimportanceand demandintheindustry.

Infact,sheremarksthattherehas definitelybeenahigherdemandfor journalspostCOVID.“Ibelievethat duringCOVID,peoplehavebecome moremindfulandasmentalhealth awarenesshasbecomemore prominent,sotoohasjournalingasitis oneofthemosteffectiveformsof therapy,”sheexplains.

“MyhopeandvisionforCTPwouldbe forusandouramazingproductbrands

tobemoreexposedtotheend-user marketthroughmoreinternetand digitalmarketingplatformsandtrade fairstogainalargerbrandpresence,” saysFaiza.

Talentedteam

Shementionshowimpressedsheis withtherawtalentthatexistsinthe company.“Duringadiaryandjournal designbrainstormingsessionIwas impressedbythetextilescollectionthat myteamandIhadproduced.After launchingtheproduct,wehadeven noticedthatmanyotherbrandsinthe industryhadfollowedsuit.

Thiswasatrueindicationofhowin touchwearewithindustrytrends,”she proudlysays.Althoughshedoesn’tlike toplayfavouriteswithherproducts(“as Ithinkthattheyareallamazing”)butif shehadtochooseoneproductlineit woulddefinitelybethediariesand journalsline.

Futureprediction

Thenextthreetofiveyearsinthe stationeryindustrytradewillbea remarkablyinterestingtime.“With emergingAItechnologiessuchas ChatGPTautomaticallytakingnotes andorganisingourdigitaldiariesto cloudstoragebecomingmore affordableandmainstreamformost countries,itisanyone’sguesswhat couldbecomeredundantinthe stationerytradeindustry.

Ithinkthatwewilldefinitelyseesome change.Itwillhoweverbeanexciting timeforinnovationandembracing changeintheindustry,”sheexplains.

Ifshewasgrantedtheopportunitytobe CEOforadayshewouldhosta strategyandinnovationdayforthe entirecompany.Shebelievesthis wouldbeanopportunityforthe companytoreflectonitsstrengths whichwouldbeextremelymotivating. “Wewouldtakesometimeto understandourweaknessesand assessourthreatssowecanlookfor opportunitiestoemergebetterand strongerintheindustry,”shesays.

Askedaboutherviewontheproposed four-dayworkweekandremoteor hybridmodels,Faizasaysshe personallyisafanofremoteandhybrid work.“Beinginthesalesindustry,Ido notbelievethatfulltimeremoteworkis possiblebutthatahybridworkmodel wouldbetheidealsolution.

Myopinionofthefourdayworkweekin SouthAfricaisthatitcouldbe achievableifcompanieshadmorestaff withwhichtorotateworkingdays, howeverwiththeunemploymentrate beingwhereitisandtheservice industryseenasbeingseeingsub-par onaninternationalscale,the implementationofthefourdaywork weekwouldbeonlysomethingtolook forwardtointhefuture,”sheexplains.

Tostayabreastofwhatisgoingonin theindustry,Faizalikestobepartof tradefairs.Shewillbeactiveatthe OfficeActiveandPNAtradefairsas shefindseventsveryinteresting.

Hobbiesandrelaxation

Infact,eventplanninghasbecomeone ofherfavouritehobbiesovertheyears. Forherrelaxationandwhenitcomesto de-stressing,shealwaysturnsto

Whensheisnotworking,sheenjoys sharingbreyaniwithherlovedones. Breyaniisatraditionalmealwhichthey haveatEidwhichisherfestiveholiday. “Asidefromitbeingextremely delicious,itisassociatedwithmylove offamilyandtogetherness,”says Faiza.

MyOffice lovesadelightfulstoryand Faizasharedabitfromherearlier yearsintheindustry.“Oneofthethings Iusedtolookforwardtoduringmy salesrepdayswastheoutoftown trips.Justyou,thelongopenroadand yourthoughts.Theonlydownsideto thelongopenroad,especiallyasa female,isthat,unlikemales,theworld isnotourbathroomandthatwehave toactuallyhuntforabathroomwhen naturecalls.

“Ononetriphowever,Ifoundacureto thecallofnatureindiscoveringthe mosttreasuredplaceofapetrol garage,thisbeing“thegarage bathroom”.

Afterdrivingthrougharemotepartof thePolokwanearea,thebathroomurge hadbecomealittleurgent,sowhenI cameacrossapetrolgarage,Inaturally stoppedandthoughtIwouldusetheir facilities.Ididtheusualstockof refreshmentsandaskedthetellerifI couldusetheirbathroom.Shelooked atmestrangelyasifIhadaskedfor somethingIwasnotmeanttobe askingfor.

“Shethenspoketoanothercolleague veryquietly(undertheirbreathsoI couldnothear),whoalsolookedatme strangely.

EventuallyIwasaskedtogooutside andspeaktothemanageraboutmy request.

Bythelookonthemanager’sface,he wasn’tveryimpressedwithmyrequest butusheredsomeonetotakemetothe bathroom.DuringthistimeIstartedto imagineanaboveparbathroomfacility asaccesswashighlysecured.

“Ifollowedthepetrolattendanttothe backofthebuildingwhereheknelt downtogetthekeyfromaspecial hidingplace.Heemergedfromthe specialhidingplaceholdingthe bathroomkeywhichwasattachedtoa longchainwhichwasalsoattachedto alarge,rustedoilcan.Thekey contraptionrequiredtwohandstohold it.

“WhenIlookedupconsideringwhether Ishouldtakethekeyfromthe attendant,Irealisedwewerestanding infrontofthebathroomwhichhada rustedsignandthatthedoorwasona skewhingeandhadawholeatthe bottomofitthatwaslargeenoughfora cattoclimbthrough.Iguessthe importantpartofthedoorwasthatit locked.

Istaredatthekeyandthedoorfora shortwhileandrealisedthatthissight wasthecuretomybathroomurgesasI didnothavethemanymore!

Selling Filing Systems

Formanybusinesses,filingdocumentsisatedioustask.Andasmuchaswearemovingintothe digitalspace,therearestillhardcopiesthatweneedtokeep.

Agoodfilingsystemisessential tokeepthingsorganisedand ensurefutureaccessto information,Whenyouare sellingfilestothecustomer,if isimportantthatyoualsounderstand theirneedslikethetypeofdocuments thatwillbefiled,thedurationthatthe documentswillbekeptandthe intervalsthattheywouldneedaccessto thefiles.

Adoctor,forinstance,needstohaveall hispatientfilesaccessibleforwhenthe patientcomestoconsultthedoctor. Andtheyneedtoretaintheserecords for20yearsaftertreatment.Financial documentsneedtobekeptforfive yearsaftersubmissiontoSARS,in caseyouneedtorespondtoan enquiry.

Hardcopyvssoftcopy

Theoldschoolbelievesthatstoring hardcopiesofdocumentsarestillthe waytogo.Theadvantagesofhard copystorageincludethefollowing:

� Thedocumentretainsits authenticity.

� Itiseffectiveinthelongterm.With loadsheddingbeingarealityofour businesslandscape,hardcopies arecertainlyalwaysaccessible.

� Hardcopiescanbekeptmore secure.

� Digitalscanningmayleadtolossof data.

� Allyournotesonthefileare availableimmediately.

� Destructionofhardcopyisfinal.

Thedisadvantagesare:

� Filescanbedamaged,misplaced, lostorstolen.

� Oncetheinformationisgone,it cannotberecovered.

Accordingtomilliondeets.comthe advantagesanddisadvantagesofsoft copyfilinghaschangedovertheyears. Whereoriginallythesedocumentswere regardedastemporary,ithasbecome

permanentwiththeintroductionof digitalsignatures.Althoughsoftcopies areportableandcanbeaccessedfrom anywhere,youneedacomputeror smartphoneandinternetaccessto viewthedocument.Itisalsoeasierto shareandcollaborateonsoftcopy files.

Itistherecommendedmethodof documentstorageforpersonal information,butbusinessesare advisedtokeephardcopyrecordson file.Oneofthedisadvantagesofsoft copyrecordsisthatitcanbechanged easily.Storingrecordsinthecloud alsoexposesacompanytolossofdata ifeveravictimofacyber-attack.

Currentspaceandfuturegrowth

Itisimportanttoascertaintheamount ofthespaceavailableforafiling system.Doesthecustomerhave enoughspaceon-siteforthetypeof filingsystemyouarerecommending? Willtherebeenoughspacetogrowthe filingsystemasthebusinessgrows? Also,besurethatyouunderstandthe amountoffilingthatwillbedonesothat thecabinetorrackwillbeadequate.

Accessibility

Dependingonthetypeofbusiness, accessibilityisakeyconsideration. Accesstothefilesshouldbeeasy,with enoughroomformultipleusers,without compromisingthesafetyandcomfort. Pooraccessibilityandplanningcan leadtostaffmembersshovingfilesinto thecabinetinadisorganisedmanner, defeatingtheentirepurposeofthe system.

Cost

Openshelf

Thisisstillthemostcost-effectiveand rudimentaryfilingoption.Openshelves allowemployeestostoredocumentson open,horizontalracks,withfolders placedverticallyinrows.Theshelving takesuplessspaceasthereareno drawersthanneedtobepulledinand out.

Openshelvesusuallystandtallerthan filecabinets,andcanthereforehold morefiles.Theyofferquickerfilingand retrieval,withmorethanoneperson beingabletouseitatthesametime. Thesystemsisadaptable–byusing barcoding,colourcodingorcomputerbasedtrackingsystemsforreference youwillhavequickaccesstoyourfiles.

Thedisadvantageofopenshelvingis thatittendstobemoreorlessfixed andpermanent,andgenerallynoteasy tomove.Openshelvingalsooffersless protectionagainstnaturalelementslike light,temperatureandhumidity.

Cabinets

Yougettwobasictypesofcabinets: verticalorlateral. Averticalfilecabinet hasdrawersthatextendfromtheshort side(380mm)ofthecabinetanda lateralfilecabinethasdrawersthat extendfromthelongsideinvarious lengths.Theseare idealforsmallfiling systems,astheyareeasytomoveand easytosourceaccessoriesfor. Standardcabinetshaveonetofivepulloutdrawersandaccommodatefolders filedvertically,fronttoback,withtop tabs.

Cabinetsaremoretimeconsumingto useaseachdrawerneedstobe openedindividually,andonlyone drawercanbeaccessedatatime. Filesstoredatthebackofthedrawer orattheverytopcanbedifficultto access.Whenusingcabinets,you needtoensurethatthespaceprovided allowsforthedrawerstobefully extended.

Lateralfiling

Lateralfilinginvolvesasystemof drawerswithshelvesthatrolloutor extendforward.Lateralfilingcabinets aretypically51cmdeepand manufacturedin76cm,91cmand 107cmwidths.

Theycomeinversionswithtwo,three, fourorfivedrawers.Lateralfilingcan handleeitherstandardfoldersor suspensionfiles(thesearefilesfitted witheasyglidenylonrunnersto smoothlymovefilesalongmetalbars).

Theadvantageoveropenshelvingis thattheycanhavedoorsandlocksfor addedsecurityandcanbeadaptedto storeothertypesofmediaaswell.The 76cm,two-drawerversionispopularfor useinsidecubicleworkstationsasit wasengineeredtofitunderor alongsidethecubicleworksurfaces.

However,someuserspreferside-tosidefiling,astheycansearchindex tabsfromaseatedposition.Inorderto suitalltypesofusers,thetop(usually fifth)drawerofalateralfileisaflipper doorwithapull-outshelf.Thisisdueto thefactthatmostpeoplewouldnotbe abletoaccessthetopofadrawerat thisheight.

Thedisadvantageoflateralfilingand standardcabinetsisthesame:only

onedrawercanbeaccessedatatime; andthespaceneedstoallowfor drawerstobefullyextended.

Rotaryfiling

Rotaryfilingsystemsarespecialised officeunits,designedtoprovide increasedstoragevolumes.Itconsists ofadouble-sidedrotatingunit,allowing theuserafull360-degreeaccessby spinningtherotatingsystem.

Afootpedalorleverisoftenusedto operatetherotationmechanism,thus allowingtheusereasycontrol. Manyrotaryfilingsystemscanstore about80%morethantheconventional drawercabinetsinjustthreeeight-tier units.Forsecurity,eachunitcanbe lockedindividually.Rotarystorage systemsusuallyhavenoshuttersor doors,whichmeanstheycanbe situatedveryclosetowallsor partitioning,givingaveryefficientuse offloorspace.Unitscanalsobeused todivideofficespace,actingas partitioning.

Desktopsizedunitesarenowavailable, providingtwoshelves,providingaccess withouthavingtogetup.Theheightof thissmallerunitis800mmandtheshelf loadis70kgeach.

Mobilefiling

Thissystemusesshelvesthatmove alongatrackorrotates,andtherefore isveryspaceefficient.Mobilestorage systemsareconstructedwitharotary handlewhichoperatesthemechanism towindthefilinguniteitherleftorright.

Severalstacksofmoveablefiling cabinetscanbeaccommodatedina limitedspaceandthetrackscanbe installedontomanydifferenttypesof flooring.Anotheradvantageofmobile filingisthatfilescanbeaccessed

quicklyasemployeesdonothaveto walkasfar.

Intermsofsecurity,thesesystemsoffer increasedprotectionastheyhaveboth doorsandlocks.Thesesystemsare generallymoreexpensivethanthe otheroptionsandsometypesofmobile filingsystemsusepower,soifthe electricitysupplyisconstrained,this mightnotbethebestoption.

Topretrievalfiling

Thisinvolvesacabinetwithdrawers thatpullout,similartothewayachest ofdrawersforclothingworks.Top retrievalfilingcabinetsusuallycontain alockingmechanismandaheightadjustmentmechanismandtheyare designedforcontainerfiling,leverarch filing,andA4suspendedfiling.

Adisadvantageisthattheseunitstake upalotoffloorspace.Italsocannot containtoomanytiers,aspeoplewill notbeabletoreachintothem.

Fire-resistantcabinets

Theseunitsareusuallyfreestanding, largeandquiteheavy.Thesecabinets willprovideanybusinessownerwith thesecurityofknowingthatwhatis storedinsidewillbeprotectedinthe caseoffire-fire-resistantcabinetsare rankedaccordingtheamountoftime theycanwithstandheat.

Anordinarydocumentisruinedat about230°C,andtheaveragefire burnsatabout700°C.

Thefire-resistantcabinetsworkby minimisingtemperatureincreasesand dependingonthetypeofcabinetcan providefireprotectionfor30minutes, 60minutesor120minutes.

AccordingtoSouthAfricalaw businessesarerequiredtokeepa multitudeofrecords.Sincethe ProtectionofPersonalInformationAct (POPIA)cameintoactionmanypeople havequestionsaboutwhatshouldbe retained.

Personalinformation

Personalinformationshouldnotbe keptlongerthanneededwithout consentoncethepurposeforcollecting theinformationwasachieved. TheFinancialIntelligenceCentreAct (FICA)definesabeneficialownerasa naturalpersonwho,directlyor indirectly,ultimatelyownsoreffectively controlstheclientofanaccountable institutionoralegalperson/trust/ partnershipthatcontrolstheclientofan

accountableinstitutionorcontrolsa clientofaninstitutiononwhosebehalf atransactionisbeingconducted.The elementsof"naturalperson"and "ultimatelyownsoreffectivelycontrol" arealsoseeninseveralother definitionsofbeneficialowner.

FATFguidanceonthedisclosureof beneficialownershipisthatitgoes beyondmerelegalownershipand controltoconsideractual/ultimate ownership/control.Thatmeansthe naturalpersonswhoownandtake advantageoftheassets,aswellas thosewhofactuallyoractuallyexert controloverthem.

Recommendation24suggests determiningthecontrolling shareholdersofafinancialinstitution basedonathreshold,e.g.,anyperson owningmorethan25%.The percentageofshareswithvotingrights isusuallyagoodindicationofcontrol. InSouthAfrica,thesethresholdsare stipulatedintheCompaniesActbutnot inFICA.

Theprimaryobligationsofan accountableinstitutionarefirstly,to identifythebeneficialownerand secondly,takereasonablestepsto verifytheidentityofthatowner.

Inthecontextofdeterminingbeneficial ownershipofpartnerships,FICA (section21B)goesintodetail.The institutionmustestablishtheidentifying nameofthepartnership,andthe identityofeverypartner,evensilent partners.

Itmustbedeterminedwhetherthe partnershipactsonbehalfofanother naturalpersonandwhetherthereare peoplewhoexercisecontroloverthe partnershiporthoseauthorisedtoact forthepartnership.Afterestablishing thisinformation,theinstitutionmust

takereasonablestepstoverifyit,e.g., throughidentitydocuments.

Inthecaseoftrusts,theaccountable institutionmustidentifythetrustees, andifbeneficiariesarespecifically cited,verifyeachone.Iftheyarenot specifiedbutareagroup,itis necessarytounderstandthe methodologyforappointingthose beneficiaries.

TheCompaniesActrequires companies,notonlyaccountable institutions,toidentifythenatural personthatownsorexercisescontrol overthecompany.

Undersection56oftheCompanies Act,acompanyisrequiredtomaintain aregisterofpersonsholdinga beneficialinterestof5%ormoreofthe companyinaparticularclassof securities.Itisanticipatedthat companiesmayfinditpractically difficulttoidentifybeneficialowners.

Inadditiontomaintainingbeneficial ownerregisters,acompanyalsomust filetheprescribedbeneficialownership informationwiththeCompaniesand IntellectualPropertyCommission (CIPC)onaprescribedformand providetheprescribedinformation.

TheFinancialSectorRegulationAct9 of2017("FSRAct")nowdefinesa beneficialownerasanaturalperson thatownsorcontrolsafinancial institution.Section159BoftheFSRAct givestherelevantregulator(Financial SectorConductAuthorityorPrudential Authority)thepowertoissuestandards inrelationtobeneficialownersof financialinstitutions.Inaddition,section 159CoftheFSRActempowersthe relevantregulatortoissuewritten directivestobeneficialownersifthey havecontravened,orarelikelyto contravene,afinancialsectorlaw.

Enforcement

AlthoughtheNationalTreasuryhas saidthatSouthAfrica’sfinancialsector overalliscompliantwiththeFATF requirements,therearecompliance concernsinthenon-financialspace(for example,estateagents,lawfirms).Itis anticipatedthatfurtherenforcement andsupervision,particularlyofhigh-risk financialinstitutions,willoccurinthe foreseeablefutureandfinancial institutionsshouldbepreparedforit.

Becarefulwhendealing withdisruptiveemployees

Employeeswhobehaveinadisruptive mannermightdosoforavarietyof reasons,including:

� Abuseofalcoholorother substances.

� Incompetence–thatis,whilethe employeeisnotintentionally disruptive,his/herinabilityto performproperlydisruptstheflowof workintheworkplace.

� Resentment–Employeesmay resentreceivingaloworzeropay increase.

� Unwillingnesstowork–thereare manyemployeeswhowouldprefer tospongeofftheirfamiliesinstead ofworking.Theseemployeestend tobehavedisruptivelyeither becausetheydonotcareiftheyget firedorbecausetheyaretryingto getfiredsotheycantelltheir familiesthatitwasnottheirfault andgoandmakesomemoneyat theCCMAbycomplainingabout their‘unfairdismissal’.

� Havingreceivedawarningorother disciplinaryaction,illtreatment, beingoverlookedforpromotion,the manager’sfancycarorlifein general.

� Industrialaction–employeestrying topressurisetheemployermay, insteadofgoingonafullyfledged strike,embarkondisruptive behaviour.

� Dislikeofacolleagueoraboss. Disruptivebehaviourintheworkplace canbeseriouslydamagingtothe effectivenessofbusinessoperations andcanevenresultinlossesforthe employer.Forexample,disruptive behaviourcancause:

� Bossestolosetheirtemper.

� Thespeedofproductiontoslow down.

� Legaldisputesarisingfrom unproceduraldisciplineand dismissal.

� Servicetoclientstosuffer.

� Lossofordersorofclients.

� Injurytoemployeesorotherpeople.

� Thequalityofproductsto deteriorate.

� Damagetoproperty.

� Clashesbetweenemployeesand managersoramongstemployees.

Itisthereforeimportantthatthe employeractsswiftlyandfirmly,yet withinthelaw,inordertominimisethe damageandsendastrongmessage thatsuchbehaviourwillnotbe tolerated.

Theemployerneedstofollowthe correctdisciplinaryproceduretoprove thattheemployeeisguilty,especially whereanemployee’sdisruptive behaviourishabitual.

Ifignored,thereisadangerofthe disruptiveemployeebeingreinstated bytheCCMA,LabourCourtor bargainingcouncil.

Havethehearing

InthecaseofMofokengvsAfrikaans ImportandExportcc(2001,11BALR 1184)theemployeewasdismissedfor disruptingtheworkplaceafterhehad beencaughtundertheinfluenceof alcoholandhadrefusedtoobeythe instructionsofasuperior.

However,theemployerreinstatedthe employeeasitwantedtogivehimone morechanceandcommutedthe dismissaltoafinalwarning.

Latertheemployeewasagain dismissed,thistimefordrivingaforklift undertheinfluenceofalcohol, damagingtheemployer’spropertywith theforklift,smashingthewindowsof thecompanyquartersinwhichhelived andloudlythreateningmanagement whiletheownerwasonaninternational telephonecall.

Insteadofcallingadisciplinaryhearing, theemployerfiredtheemployeeonthe spot.TheCCMAstatedthatthe existenceofthefinalwarningdidnot exempttheemployerfromholdinga disciplinaryhearing.

Employee

Employeesareadvised,iftheyare aggrievedbyanythingatwork,notto disrupttheworkplacelesttheyendup outonthestreet.Instead,aggrieved employeesshouldlodgeformal grievancesand/orCCMAdisputes.

Employersareadvised,whenfaced with‘disruptiveemployeesto:

� Avoidlosingtheirtemper.

� Usetheirmostexpertlabourlaw specialisttohelpwiththefollowing:

-carefullyandthoroughly investigatethecauseofthe problematicbehaviour

-arriveobjectivelyand unemotionallyattheroute causeoftheproblem

-decideuponalegallycompliant, practicalandeffectivecourseof actionappropriatetothe particulartypeofdisruptionand toitsspecificcause.

Suchactionmayvaryfroma warningtoadisciplinaryhearing orfromcounsellingtotrainingor treatment.

Keep thefloors clean

Howtotellifthetilesaredirty?

Hightrafficvolumeareasinofficesare oftentiledpurelybecauseitiseasierto keeptilesclean.Unlikecarpeting, whichabsorbsandhideliquids,food, mould,dirtanddust,tilesarenot absorbent.Forthisreasonmany peoplebelievethatthemicrobial growthontilesarenotasbad–itdoes howevernotmeanthatthefloorsare germfree.

AccordingtoKitchenerClean,fungi alsoneedsasfoodsourcetocontinue growingandspreading.Sinceceramic tilesarenotorganicandnotvery absorbent,mouldonthetileswillnot lastlongbecauseofalackoffood. Mouldwouldusuallyonlybevisible whereitiswetandfoodisavailable, likeinashower.

Bacteria

Itisalsodifficultforbacteriatospread ontile.Itwillusuallyonlyremainon thetilesuntilitisdry.Somebacteria howeverremainonyourfloors, especiallyduringrainyseasons.Your employeesandcustomersmaybringin moistureontheirbootsorshoes,which notonlybringsbacteria,butalsofood sourcesforthebacteria..

Challengeswhencleaningfloors

Tilesarerelativelyeasytocleanand sanitize-thechallengeisusuallyinthe grout.Unliketiles,groutisporousand canabsorbandbecomehometo mould,germs,andbacteria.Thegrout isalsotypicallylowerthanthetiles, makingiteasyforliquidsanddirttoslip intothegroutandstay.

Officeswithsmallertilesareespecially atriskforbacterialgrowthinthegrout becauseofthesignificantlyhigherratio ofgrouttotile.Aroughnessonboththe tileandthegroutcanalsocreatemore challengesforcleaners-roughtiles witheventhesmallestgroovescan hidedirtandmakeitdifficulttofully sanitize.

Howtocleanyourfloors

Mopandbucketvsspray-and-vac

Thefirstmethodinvolvedcleaningthe floorswithamopandbucket.Andthe secondmethodevaluatedaspray-andvacmethod.Bothmethodsweretested

Withthemopandbucketmethod,fresh waterwasaddedtocleanbucketsand acleanmopwasusedtowashthe floors.Withthespray-and-vacmethod, sanitizingfluidwasappliedtothetiles withaspraygun.Afterthat,a specialisedvacuumextractedthefluid fromthefloors.

Aftertwoseparatesectionsoftiles werecleanedwiththetwomethods,the researcherswaitedforthefloorstodry beforetheycollectedbacterialsamples.

Results

Thetestsshowedthatthespray-andvacmethodsanitizedtheareamuch morethoroughlythanthemopand bucketmethod.Themopremoved50% oftheinitialbacterialcounts,whilethe spray-and-vacmethodremovednearly 90%.Despiteevenapplyinghospital gradedisinfectanttothemopitstillleft asignificantamountofbacteriaonthe floor.

Whenthesamedisinfectantwasused withthespray-and-vacmethod,the bacterialcountshowedonly0.8%at thegroutline.Thismeantthatasprayand-vacmethodwasalmost60xmore effectivethanthemopandbucket method!

Inmanyofficesthecleaning takesplaceafterhourssosome peopledonoteventknowthe namesofthecleaners.Office cleaningisasimpletask–however,thereismuchmoreto acleanofficethanmeetsthe eye.

Howtocleanthen?

Ifyouhavebeencleaningyourtile floorswithjustamopandbucket,you maybeworkinginadirtyoffice! Remember,moppingitselfisnota problem!Mopping,whendonecorrectly andwhileusingtherightmaterials,isa greatwaytomaintainfloorsandhelp stopthespreadingofgerms.
