late in picking him up and sent his wife to smooth things over, Eres said. He said his host dad regularly paraglides home into his backyard and he was late arriving that day. Ultimately, Eres was able to go snow skiing often with that adventurous family who lived near a ski slope, he said. And his friendships with other students, such as an Australian named Simon who purchased thousands of dollars in vests during his stay, are among the highlights of Eres’ trip. “I learned a lot that will help me next year,” Eres said. He will be attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst to study economics. “I definitely plan to pass on a few French classes,” he said. Eres’ parents, who are Rotary exchange supporters, are both of European descent.
Eres’ father, Gyula, is from a part of Northern Yugoslavia once known as Hungary that today is known as Serbia. His mother’s family is from Germany and Sweden. And his younger sister, Veronica, will be leaving next to study in Switzerland. The goal of the Rotary Youth Exchange program is the creation of worldwide goodwill and international understanding. “People don’t realize what this club does,” said Bill Echols of the Farragut Rotary Club. Echols is one of a number of Rotarians who aid in coordination and transportation of exchange students like Eres. “They change lives,” said Inga Eres, Marco Eres’ mother who was at Farragut’s noon Rotary meeting to listen to her son’s homecoming report.

of 11 people ride the bus each day. “It would be cheaper for us to buy these 11 riders a $500 gas card,” Honken said. “With the rise in gas prices, there hasn’t been an increase in riders,” Alderman Jeff Elliot added. When Honken moved for the $40,000 to be removed, the motion died for lack of a second.
By Valorie Fister Webb School graduate Marco Eres recently returned from a Rotary exchange program in France. He visited Selestat, France, where he said he enjoyed speaking the language, staying with his three host families and meeting other exchange students from all over the world on bus trips throughout Europe. There are currently 52 students coming into the U.S. and leaving for foreign countries, according to Linda Bellich, second vice chair of the Ohio Erie Rotary Youth Exchange Program Inc. The Ohio Erie program covers 11 districts including Tennessee and has been exchanging students for 30 years. Bellich is a member of the Farragut Rotary Club, where Eres also recently spoke of his adventures in France. Eres said Selestat is located in central Alsace, on the left bank of the Ill River.
He said Alsace has “a little bit of an identity crisis” because German possession of this region was contested in the 19th and 20th centuries. Alsace changed hands four times between France and Germany in 75 years. Eres noted that Alsace is “a little bit like Texas. They can have their own flag.” He also said the stork is the symbol of Alsace, and the birds are found everywhere there. The 18-year-old said his schooling in France was comprised of 35 hours per week of classes. All were in French, except for a German class he dropped to take one in Spanish instead. “We also had school on Saturday mornings which is, …” he said, leaving the audience to chuckle at his untold opinion of that educational practice. One of Eres’ sponsor dads was
