Dylan’s wish comes true

NEIGHBORHOOD BUZZ

Debbie Sayers: Teacher of the year Hardin Valley Academy’s Debbie Sayers was selected as the Knox County Schools Teacher of the Year for Grades 9-12 at the annual Teacher of the Year celebration Feb. 16. She holds a master’s degree from LMU and works as AP chemistry teacher and academic dean of the STEM Academy at HVA. She volunteers as an “e-mentor” with first-year chemistry teachers, is a yoga instructor and a member of Messiah Lutheran Church. She coached the first cross country team at West Valley Middle School and has coached AYSO girls soccer.

By Theresa Edwards What started as a holiday wish of 7-year-old Dylan McCurry came true when the faculty of Hardin Valley Academy and Karns High School matched off in a Feb. 10 basketball game fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, raising a $1,000 donation. In December, Dylan told his mother, Mitzi McCurry, what he wanted from Santa for Christmas was money. When she asked him why, he replied, “I want money to give to St. Jude’s Hospital.” McCurry discussed it with principal Sallee Reynolds, who helped plan this basketball game fundraiser. McCurry specified the donation be used for research and development. She explained, “That way, it can help the whole world!” The game ended with a Karns victory over HVA with a score of 47-43. Both teams shook hands with each other and with young Dylan McCurry.

Marie Ellen Schult: Teacher of the year Cedar Bluff Middle School’s Marie Ellen Schult was selected as the Knox County Schools Teacher of the Year for grades 5-8 at the annual Teacher of the Year celebration Feb. 16. A sixth grade science teacher, Schult has done post graduate coursework at UT and is a lead teacher at Cedar Bluff. She joined Knox County Schools in 1999. She also was the school Teacher of the Year in 2006. She volunteers for various causes including the Knoxville Zoo and as the school’s recycling coordinator.

Dylan McCurry and his mom, Mitzi McCurry, a physical education and wellness instructor at Hardin Valley Academy, are congratulated by Karns Middle School social studies instructor Lynn Allen after the fundraiser faculty basketball game.
