Kane says ‘thanks’

State Rep. Roger Kane is asking Karns residents to contact Tim Hill, leasing agent, to thank him for use of retail space for early voting. “He received no compensation other than our thanks,” Kane posted on the Facebook page “I Love Karns.” The early voting site was near Subway on Oak Ridge Highway. And Kane points out there are two more elections ahead: Aug. 7 and Nov. 4. State law requires early voting to start 20 days prior to an election and close 5 days before. Hill’s number is 719-7538. The “I Love Karns” page, started by Carolyn Greenwood, has now topped 800 users. It’s a neat way to communicate quickly about issues of concern. – S. Clark

Popular with the seniors at the Grad Bash celebration was the Rolling Video Games truck.

Karns High School has been celebrating its 100th birthday all year, but no celebration was as special as the one on Thursday, May 15. The Centennial Grad Bash honored the 2014 graduating seniors at this most special time in their lives. The party was bitter-sweet for the 100-plus seniors who came to enjoy the food, music, games and prizes, but also to have one more night of fun with their high school friends. The Grad Bash was coordinated by senior parents, with Lisa Settle as event coordinator. The parents have spent months collecting donations for door prizes and arranging the activities

and special attractions, including the Rolling Video Games truck, which got constant play as seniors took turns at the gaming consoles. “The game truck is boy heaven!” exclaimed chaperone Shannon Sumner. Prizes were plentiful, and organizers expected all seniors who attended to go home with something – from gift certificates to mini-refrigerators and microwave ovens. “It’s a celebration of their achievements,” said Settle of the seniors. “It’s to let them know that we’re proud of them. It’s a last bash with their friends.” The Karns High School graduation ceremony was held at Thompson Boling Arena on Saturday.

We look forward to all of you taking advantage of a brandnew opportunity.” Starting in 2015, Tennessee Promise commits the state to provide two years of community college or technical school, tuitionfree, to high school graduates who agree to work with a mentor, complete eight hours of community service and maintain a 2.0 GPA. Once they graduate, students can transfer to a four-year school and start as juniors, thus cutting the cost of a four-year degree in half. Tennessee Promise is part of Haslam’s “Drive to 55” initiative aimed at increasing the number of Tennesseans with a certificate or degree beyond high school to 55 percent from today’s 32 percent level by the year 2025. ‘A brand-new opportunity’ Haslam inks Tennessee Promise at Fulton High By Betty Bean Fulton High School rising junior Thalia Reyna wants to be a veterinarian. She was on the stage last Thursday and smiled broadly when Gov. Bill Haslam signed the legislation that will make Tennessee Promise a reality. “I think it’s a great honor and opportunity for those who don’t have enough money to go to college,” she said. “My mom and dad, the highest they got in school was 10th grade. I want to become the first person in my family to go to college and graduate. I want to make them proud.” Haslam, who said he was awaiting news of the birth of a grandson, was enthusiastic about the message he was delivering: “If you graduate from high school and work with a mentor and do eight hours of community service, we’re going to promise
