Coffee Break While no season is really “slow,” this time of year is fast paced for Chris Brown, equipment operator with the town of Farragut’s public works department. Chris, who has been with the town for 11 years, also has a busy family life that makes the summer season active. With three children, the house is always lively, but Chris and his wife, Amy, also are foster parents, with two foster children currently part of the family.

Karns History Mike Gordon (owner of Gordon’s Drugstore), Obie Goins (U.S. Army veteran) and Ed Butler (farmer) spoke at the Karns History Club where a record number of at least 40 came to hear about the “good old days.” Theresa Edwards was there for her final wrap-up (or next to final wrap-up) as community reporter for Karns and Hardin Valley.

Chicken finger Bearden got relief, but not so much for Fountain City. Chick-fil-A disregarded citizens’ requests and installed a 40-foot pole sign on Broadway last week. Some are calling it fowl play.

The evolution of football Effective this fall, football players who strike defenseless foes above the shoulders will be subject to ejection. Players will be prohibited from using helmets as the punishing part of battering rams. Football is fearful of concussions – and lawsuits.

Hanging at Hardee’s

By T Theresa he esa E here he Edwards dwar dwar ard ds ds

Karns Hardee’s was filled with with h tement when a painting of the th he excitement Karns Breakfast Club was unveiled as WBIR’s Allison Bybee reported live on the scene. “We’ve had a good time today,” said Larry York. “It looked like about 50 people here, which is more than usual.” Karns High School student Emma Batson painted the club as part of teacher Bill Shinn’s project “on exhibit now,” a program for getting art out in the Karns community. Artwork is hung in Walgreens, and Dr. Butler’s Animal Clinic will be a future display location. Shinn got the idea for the painting when he came to measure the wall at Hardee’s and saw the group. He returned with a camera and took several photos which Batson compiled to create the painting. “I got pictures of most of them who come, although shifts change every hour,” said Shinn. Those in the painting are: Dode Gordon, Rick Higginbotham, Ray Jenkins, Larry York, Allen Denton, Paul Roberts, Bill McCoige, Ed Butler, Bessie McFarland and Allen Atwood. Some regulars missing from the painting are: Don Byrd, Kenny

West, Howard Hunt, Don Gordon and Bill Bolinger. “Emma is a prize student,” Shinn said. “She’s a genius, a wonderful child. I told her she didn’t need to be shading cones and spheres in class and asked her to take on the challenge of this painting. She accepted the challenge and did an excellent job.”

Anders: Karns Senior Center in budget By Sandra Clark The Knox County Commission will vote on Mayor Tim Burchett’s proposed budget for fiscal year 2014 at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 28. The budget is expected to pass, probably with amendments. Anyone wanting to speak should call 215-2534 to sign up for the public forum. In an interview last week, Commissioner Brad Anders offered no complaints about the budget. “We’ve been blessed,” he said of two major projects for the Sixth District. Burchett is requesting $1.2 million to construct a free-standing senior center on county-owned land in Karns. Anders said it will be similar to the Carter center. Money was appropriated last year for design and site location. Anders is also excited about funding for extension of the Karns

Connector, which really is a Karns bypass depending on where you are going. The Connector will enable motorists to travel from Emory Road to Hardin Valley without going through downtown Karns and under the narrow railroad bridge on Beaver Creek-Byington Road. Anders said when completed, a traffic signal will be installed. He’s also happy about the recently opened sidewalk on Oak Ridge Highway. Burchett’s budget contains no tax increase and maintains services at existing levels. It fully funds the school board’s request for $419.9 million, and provides $4 million in capital improvement funding for completion of the Karns Connector. It keeps the county on track to fulfill Burchett’s goal of reducing the county’s debt by $100 million by the end of fiscal year 2016.

Humbled at Arlington By Libby Morgan Friday after Mother’s Day we buried our mother. Words cannot do justice to witnessing a military funeral at Arlington. We knew it was going to be the experience of a lifetime. Mary Elizabeth Rivero Morgan, better known as Bebe, was ahead of her time. After growing up in Tampa and Havana, she graduated from Florida State College for Women in Tallahassee (now FSU) just when World War II was getting serious. Both our parents were WWII veterans, Daddy seeing action at sea as a navigator and a captain of Coast Guard ships, and Momma

She trained at the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn., and entered active service in December 1943. (It would be 30 more years before women were accepted at the academy as regular college-level students.) Our father, Carey Carlisle Morgan Jr., graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1940 as an engineer, but My mother’s urn and the flag were carried on a caisson to the Columbarium.
