Anders retains commission chair Knox County Commissioner Brad Anders will serve another term as the commission chair following a challenge by Dave Wright. Anders had support from Brad Anders Commissioners Richard Briggs, Mike Brown, Amy Broyles, Sam McKenzie and Randy Smith, while Wright got votes from Ed Brantley, Charles Busler, Jeff Ownby and Bob Thomas. Anders represents District 6 which includes Solway, Karns and Hardin Valley. Wright, who was elected vice chair, represents District 8 which includes East Knox County.
Northwest County Sector Plan update The Metropolitan Planning Commission is hosting three community meetings to discuss the Northwest County Sector Plan update. The first is at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 22, at Pellissippi State Community College, cafeteria annex room, 10915 Hardin Valley Road. The second is at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 25, at Cedar Bluff Elementary Library, 705 N. Cedar Bluff Road. The third is at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7, at the Karns Community Club, 7708 Oak Ridge Highway.

Paying patriotism forward

It was a banner day for Hardin Valley Academy, for it isn’t every day nearly 2,000 teenagers get face to face with real American heroes. Students, faculty and guests cheered as Col. Roger Donlon and Major James Taylor, two of the 79 surviving Medal of Honor recipients, arrived aboard a Black Hawk helicopter to a hero’s welcome. JROTC, marching band, dance team and cheer squad honored the warriors with an assembly showcasing their talents. Principal Sallee Reynolds was moved to tears by the red, white and blue display of appreciation for the soldiers’ service to the United States. “It was a tremendous honor to have Col. Donlon and Major Taylor here,” Reynolds said. “Many of our students have stopped by to say what an amazing day this is To page A-3 Col. Saying goodbye to Joy McCroskey More than 1,500 people turned out at a reception at the City County Building for Joy McCroskey, who was retiring from her position as a court clerk. McCroskey is an encyclopedia of county government. If she writes her story it probably would classify as fiction because nobody would believe what has gone on could be true.
