Davis to head new school Veteran principal Susan Davis has been named to lead the new southwest elementary school now under construction at Northshore Town Center. Superintendent Dr. Susan Davis Jim McIntyre said Davis will play a key role, working with the contractor to complete the school as well as hiring staff and working with parents and students to establish the community of the school. She will step down as principal at Cedar Bluff Elementary School where she has worked in administration since 2004. Davis joined Knox County Schools in 1992 as a teacher at Whittle Springs Middle School. A resident of East Knox County, she is married to attorney and former state Rep. Jimmy Kyle Davis.

By Theresa Edwards The WordPlayers presented “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” in collaboration with The Arts at Pellissippi State. The pageant disaster starts when Charlie, who

gets his lunch stolen daily by Leroy Herdman, tells Leroy about free doughnuts in Sunday School every week. This brings the entire Herdman clan of unruly children to a place where they normally would not darken the

doors ... Sunday School. When children are asked to volunteer for the pageant, everyone backs away when the Herdmans say they want to be in the play. “I guess on the surface, this show could seem like a

It’s just after 9 a.m. on a Tuesday morning, and Tracy Thomas’ 2nd-grade students at Halls Elementary are gathered in the corner of the classroom. Thomas reads a book the class has chosen, “Abraham Lincoln Comes Home,” about the funereal train trip that returned the slain 16th president home to Springfield, Ill., after his assassination. The students listen attentively, ask questions and do all the things you’d expect them to do. The amazing part is what happens next.

story about a bunch of ‘bad kids,’ but that’s just where it starts. The real story is one of acceptance, inclusion and how the simple story of Christmas can have a profound effect,” said director Matthew Lloyd.

Student actors come from the community’s various schools including Michael Blevins, 10, who portrays Charlie. He attends Ball Camp Elementary School and loves acting. Info: www.wordplayers.org.

‘Let there be light’ By Theresa Edwards Grace Baptist Church presented its Christmas concert “Let There Be Light” on Dec. 15-16. It sounded like surround sound in the auditorium, and the dazzling light show illuminated even the ceiling. A wide screen expanded across the front stage with wintery scenes of snow found only inside during this warm Tennessee holiday season. GraceKids brought out a giant sleigh and sang

“Jingle Bells.” The Grinch made a visit playing piano as Grace students and soloist Sean Sloas sang. The nativity appeared on the screen, bringing the audience back to the first Christmas night as the 148-member adult choir sang “Joy to the World.” Several other musicians and soloists performed, including WATE-TV weather anchor Matt Hinkin, who sang a carol medley. There will be a 45-minute candlelight and com-

munion Christmas Eve service at Grace Baptist Haleigh Fuller, Dylan Davidson, Olivia Rose; (back) Kenna Lyle, Church 4 p.m. and 5:30 Johnny Eller, Hannah Johnson and Ethan McGhee p.m. Monday, Dec. 24. Info: www.gracebc.org
