I’m happy to say the reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated. That’s not to say there weren’t days I thought I was dead, but it turns out I was just in Eighty Four, Pa.

Meet Cylk Cozart Karns’ hometown movie star Calvin “Cylk” Cozart brought his stories of Hollywood to the library Tuesday as the guest of the Karns History Club. Cozart shared with a standing-room only crowd of approximately 40 friends, family and fans. He talked about his desire to make a difference in the lives of those he meets. “What’s the use of celebrity if you can’t use it to educate, motivate and inspire,” said Cozart.

How will Cuonzo be remembered? I suppose Cuonzo Martin has been gone long enough to raise the question, how will he be remembered? He was an excellent role model but calm as an undertaker, no used-car sales skills, certainly not a circus barker. He could not have escaped Bruce Pearl’s shadow.

By Sherri Gardner Howell The Lions are turning out in full force for their contribution to a fun summer in Karns as the days tick off toward summer. Summer has been a busy time for the members of the Karns Lions Club since 1969, when the community-minded club members put their money where their hearts were and built the Karns
Community Pool. The forwardthinking Lions bought 25 acres and had the community pool built. Lions had to sign notes that often put their homes as the “guarantee” to get the money to build the pool. “We were scared to death,” says long-time member Jackie Dailey. “We wanted to do this for the community, but we didn’t want to
lose our homes!” It was the second time the club had stepped up with a financial commitment since its founding in 1954. The first was when members rallied to build the original Karns High School football stadium. The pool opened in 1970, says Dailey. “We all worked at the pool in the summer because we couldn’t really afford to hire a lot
By Sandra Clark The Karns Contract Post Office has been saved. “We have come to an agreement,” owner Tina Lawson said late Friday. A sizeable segment of Karns was in turmoil all week after Mark Cawood, a former county commissioner, posted on his Facebook page and Mayberry sign, a community bulletin board near the railroad underpass, that the local
post office was at risk. Cawood urged residents to contact Sens. Bob Corker and Lamar Alexander and U.S. Rep. Jimmy Duncan. “It’s the third location I remember,” said Cawood. Karns has had a contract station since the 1950s. Tina Lawson and her late husband have held the contract since 1998. The office is at 7544 Oak Ridge
Highway near Dollar General Store. “I’m delighted that her contract has been extended,” Cawood said. “It would be inconvenient for residents to drive into Cedar Bluff to use the post office.” Lawson said she needs to rent more postal boxes to increase revenue to ensure her long-term survival. She said the postal contract term is “indefinite.”

Signs of the times? Watch for rezoning notices in West Knox By Wendy Smith Last week, developers asked the Knoxville - Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission to rezone four properties to allow for higher density housing. One request was postponed. New zoning was granted for the other three. On Hardin Valley Road, zoning was changed to allow for 8.5 units per acre on 12 acres. On Lovell Road, new zoning will allow a density of 5.7 units per acre on 62 acres. On Westland Drive, zoning on 18 acres changed from agricultural to planned residential to allow for three units per acre. The developer had asked for five units Attorney Wayne Kline speaks to the per acre. The only one not granted was Council of West Knox County Homeowners. to meet with the developer. Volunteer Development is seeking five units per acre on a six-acre lot adjacent to the neighborhood. These proposed developments, along with proposed apartment buildings on Emory Church Road and at Northshore Town Center, should make everyone in West Knox County sit up and take notice. The Council of West Knox County Homeowners has been monitoring the trend for months. Two days before the MPC vote, Board of Zoning Appeals chair and West Knox homeowners’ council past president John Schoonmaker warned the group: “The MPC is saying yes to everything.” Attorney Wayne Kline, who represents neighbors opposed to John Huber’s Westland Cove
development on Emory Church Road, was guest speaker at the CWKCH meeting. The group opposed Huber at MPC, Knox County Commission and BZA, and their only victory was BZA’s ruling against Huber’s plan to build a marina adjacent to the 312-unit apartment building. Both sides have sued, and the case will next appear in Chancery Court. Whatever happens in the Westland Cove case will set a precedent for the rest of the county, Kline says. “This is not the only place that this is going to happen. It will become the norm. Some of you will have high-rise apartments next to your house.” CWKCH President Margot Kline urged attendees to speak
