The Old Jail in Maynardville got a hep initiation and a big stamp of approval from Preservation Union County when the group held its annual to-do. “Jailhouse Rock” brought out Marilyn Monroe, gangsters, greasers, prisoners, bobby socks and cat-eye glasses to celebrate the rejuvenation of the building and raise funds for preservation projects. A full house was served a great meal while enjoying doo wop spun by Gary and Diane England. Table centerpieces were made with old 78s. Preservation Union County is focusing on rebuilding Oak Grove Schoolhouse and hopes to have next year’s party there.

Patrick Hurley from Sharps Chapel was elected as president of the Union County Chamber of Commerce at the Feb. 18 board meeting. Julie Graham resigned last year but had been serving as interim president until a replacement was selected. Union County Mayor Mike Williams said he doesn’t know Hurley but is looking forward to working with him and the Chamber. “I hope he does well. I hope the Chamber keeps promoting Union County businesses. I hope we keep moving forward,” said Williams.

Many of us have had the privilege of meeting people who have had a positive impact on our lives. These range from early childhood to adulthood and older. All of us remember an uncle or aunt or perhaps a grandfather or grandmother or possibly just an acquaintance that made remarkable impressions on our life. They, in some way or another, caused us to be who we are today. Many of us can look back on our childhood and see things that our parents did that molded our lives. I am thankful to have had Godly parents who accepted the responsibility of raising three boys according to the teachings of the Bible. When I was 16, a new pastor came to my home church, New Corinth Baptist in Grainger County. I was the song leader and Sunday school director. This new pastor was young, full of life and a good preacher. There was something about this new pastor that drew both young and old to him. The church began to grow. There was a different spirit of love in the church that I had not experienced before. This new pastor was the Rev. R.C. Harless.

I remember occasions when he and his wife, Mary Lou, would take me to meetings and training seminars that helped me grow and become more involved in the work of the church. R. C. Harless I’m sure he knew the Lord had something greater in store for me. When I was 19, I was inducted into the U.S. Army. I remember very well the last Sunday before I left for the military. R.C. called me before the church at the end of the morning service and told me how much the church appreciated me and how much they loved me and that they would be praying for me. Then he reached in his coat pocket and pulled out a little Bible that he always carried. He said, “Take this with you, read it and it will comfort you.” Inside he had written: “God and you are a majority.” I did take that little Bible and I read it and it did bring me comfort during my mili-
rector of missions for the Northern Association of Baptists. I still have people telling me how much he meant to them. He had a great impact on many lives. R.C. passed away Oct. 5, 2013. Many times since then I have wanted to talk with him. I can just hear him asking, “How is your church doing, Buddy?” He was always interested in me even through all his illness. Many times in the warm weather I would see him sitting outside on the porch; and I would stop and we’d chat for a while. On two different visits last summer, he asked me, “How long have we been buddies?” I would tell him, more than 50 years. He would say, “Boy, that’s a long time.” I miss my buddy, but I know he is in a better place. I haven’t had the opportunity before, so I’m taking this time to tell everyone how much he meant to me. But he knew, because I told him just a few weeks before he passed away. Thanks, R.C., for being my friend, my counselor, my pastor and my mentor. We shall meet again. The Rev. Wayne G. Roach is pastor of Greenway Baptist Church.

tary career. To this day I still have it and consider it one of my cherished belongings. We kept in touch while I was in service. R.C. went on to pastor Cedar Ford Baptist in Luttrell, where he and Mary Lou met a young lady named Sharon DeVault. They asked her if she would like to write to me. She did, and we corresponded by mail for about a year. When I came home from overseas, we dated for three months and got married. R.C. married us. He must have done a good job, because that marriage has lasted 46 years to date. We have two children and R.C. assisted me in both of their weddings. Our friendship grew stronger after I was discharged. He was always very helpful in my church work and recommended me for several positions in different churches and associations. He was the very first person I told that I was being called to preach. He was very happy to hear the news. I followed him in my first pastorate to Fair Havens Baptist Church in Powell. (“Beloved,” Toni Morrison) Toni Morrison’s searing and grace-filled book “Beloved” won the Pulitzer Prize in 1988. Don’t ask me why I am just now reading it. Maybe because I wasn’t ready. It is not a book for the faint of heart. It is about the aftermath of slavery, and the long shadows that horror draped across a young nation. It is, quite simply, stunning, heartbreaking and haunting. In a tale filled with truths I have only read about in history books, Morrison’s words about kneading bread struck a chord with me. There was something I could relate to! I have been baking bread for more than four decades, and every batch is a little

miracle of grace. Not to say – far from it – that every loaf of bread was perfect. It takes a while to get the hang of making bread, and then, if one is daring enough to try a different kind of loaf, or work at a different altitude, or bake on a rainy day, all bets are off. Yeast is a living thing, and seems to have a temperament. It can’t be hurried, or over-heated, or too cold.
But it is the handling of the dough, the kneading of it, the shaping of it that makes the magic work, and at the same time, affords such pleasure to the baker. However, Morrison’s “beating back the past?” That is harder still. Admit it. There are things in the past that haunt you. That worry, and nag at, and grieve you. It is part of the human condition, this memory of pain or failure or regret or sin. We may not be enslaved by chains or by those who claim to own us. But slavery still exists in today’s world. It lives in those who live with terrible memories of pain and suffering. It thrives in those who will not, cannot, forgive or forget the wrongs done to them. It continues in those who are addicted – to anything! (A good friend made an unforgettable statement to me many years ago. She said, “Satan is alive and well in Knoxville, and his name is Crack Cocaine!”) So, how do we throw off the chains and beat back the past?
Third baseman Will Maddox takes the game very seriously. Tough guy. Dirt on uniform. The oldfashioned description was “hard-nosed.” Pro scouts will probably make notes about sophomore shortstop A.J. Simcox. Team characteristics? Better defense, lots more scoring punch. Coach says he can now compare talent with rivals without feeling handicapped. If there are positive developments in track, they remain hidden. Old Vols send e-mails, trying to convince me that a coaching change is necessary. I have reserved
comment. Athletic director Dave Hart is on his own in this case. He gets paid most of a million to make such weighty decisions. Tennis is not really a spring sport. It goes on 10 months a year. For me, it is more fun on a balmy April afternoon. The Vols are nationally ranked. They have strong leadership with teaching skills. Sam Winterbotham was 2013 national coach of the year. Chris Woodruff is another head coach in associate disguise. Ben Testerman is volunteer assistant. Wow! Winterbotham, a native of Stoke on Trent, England, has the proper recruiting phone numbers – Australia, Estonia, Latvia, Poland,
Webb School. Tennessee golf, much like cross-country, is for the participants who take pride in their sport and can press on without the cheering multitudes. It is OK if you skip some matches. You do need to know about the Mack and Jonnie Day practice facility along the Tennessee River. It is big league. It should be. The grassy patch cost $4.5 million. Phase 2 of this project, the Furrow-Blackburn clubhouse, will be special, too. If you are into spring football, there is one date to circle. The Orange and White game is scheduled for April 12 at Neyland Stadium.
William Faulkner, who knew something about the South, famously said, “The past isn’t over. It isn’t even past!” Forgiveness is key, I be-
lieve. Forgetfulness is also helpful. I can’t remember where I first heard the 10 words that will lead to freedom. But I believe they are true
and life-giving. Write them down. Keep them where you can read them when you need to. Remember them. They are “Give it up, let it go, and set it free.”

Shoulder impingement syndrome Chiropractic Outlook By Dr. Darrell Johnson, DC Shoulder impingement syndrome is a painful condition caused by wear or injury to the rotator cuff, which is made up of the muscles and tendons in your shoulder that connect the upper arm bone (humerus) with the shoulder blade and help hold the ball of the humerus firmly in the shoulder socket. Rotator cuff injuries can occur as a result of lifting, falling or repetitive motion. People who are repeatedly raising their arms over their head – swimmers, tennis players and people whose jobs require
them to reach – are at risk for rotator cuff injury. A chiropractor has a variety of treatments he or she might use in treating shoulder impingement syndrome. Heat and/or ice treatments may help, as may ultrasound or electrical muscle stimulation. The chiropractor may also recommend exercises to restore mobility and range of motion to the shoulder. These are steps that do not involve the injection of steroids or surgery. Treatment generally covers six to eight weeks, after which most pa-
tients are able to resume their regular activities. As people age, they sometimes think they just have to live with the onset of various aches and pains. Don’t be one of those people. Chiropractic treatment can correct certain conditions and help end the pain. Brought to you as a community service by Union County Chiropractic; 110 Skyline Drive, Maynardville, TN; 992-7000.

HMMS Beta Club to state convention
Aubrey Booker, Brianna Odom and Chloe Bowman cook up pancakes for the HMMS Beta Club breakfast fundraiser at Paulette Elementary.
By Libby Morgan Horace Maynard Middle School sixth through eighth graders in the Beta Club are traveling to Nashville soon to join the Junior Beta Club state convention. While there, they will compete in many academic pursuits such as spelling, a quiz bowl and literature. Other competitions include arts and crafts, photography and building a tower with drinking straws. “We’ve been practicing with the straws. We can use 150 straws and two rolls of tape, and the tower has to
hold a tennis ball for a minute,” says student Chloe Bowman. “The goal is to get the tower as tall as possible in the shortest amount of time.” Members of the Beta Club must maintain a 3.2 GPA. This school year they have worked to provide 86 shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse, and collected food for the needy. Thirty-eight of the 200 club members at HMMS will attend the convention. Sixth grade social studies teacher Jane Hansen is the Beta Club sponsor.

Justice for all The legendary “Miss Hazel” Walters Butcher dispensed both knowledge and discipline freely to all. I don’t recall how often I drank from Miss Hazel’s fountain of correction, but two draughts I remember well. Miss Hazel had a black and white television mounted to the center of the blackboard. WSJK-TV, Sneedville, Tenn., carried educational programming, most notably “Sesame Street” and “The Electric Company.” On one occasion Miss Hazel turned on the TV and told us to put our heads down. My first grade mind could not accept wasting such a valuable educational opportunity, so I popped up to watch TV. I suppose I looked like a turtle craning its head from its shell when Miss Hazel caught me, and swift retribution followed. “Ronnie Lee, get up here!” Thus summoned, I approached Miss Ha-
Ronnie Mincey TEACHER TIME zel, who told me to raise my britches legs up to my knees. Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish went a flyswatter back and forth several times over my exposed shinbones. Perhaps that is why to this day my shins itch every night at bedtime! Thus corrected, I went back to my seat, put my head down and ignored television. On another occasion our class lined up in the hallway after lunch to spend our dimes to buy ice cream from Miss Scarlett Stokes. Not only was Miss Scarlett super nice, she was the prettiest lady I had ever seen, and I loved her dearly. Always the free talker,
imagine my mortification when Miss Hazel jerked me by the shoulders from line and shook me until I thought my little head would roll down the hall to Mr. Lynch’s office. Not only was I terrified, I was embarrassed for Miss Scarlett to see me this way. I may not have cried in Headstart, but then I began to howl like an animal caught in a trap. I’m pretty sure I scared Miss Hazel, for she took me into the classroom, sat in her green teacher’s desk chair, pulled me onto her lap and rocked and soothed me until I hushed. Miss Hazel and I came to a mutual understanding that day – she never shook me again, but believe me when I tell you it was years before I talked in line again! Thankfully I was not a tattler, though some had to wear a squirrel’s tail (the “tattle tail”) and walk up and down the aisles of our and neighboring classrooms. I don’t remember Miss Hazel paddling me, but I know she did others as her paddle is now an ar-
tifact in the Union County Historical and Genealogical Museum. Such disciplinary measures today would be considered cruel and unusual punishment by most, but Miss Hazel never intended it so. Only my feelings and pride were hurt (both recovered). In “old school days,” “tough love” discipline got the job done – it was quickly administered whenever needed so teaching and learning could occur. How effective in comparison are today’s disciplinary methods? Next week I will discuss teachers as nurses.
Twelve Luttrell Elementary students went up against each other to spell some very hard words. “Ambivalent” took down six of the contestants, and Tyler Greene’s correct spelling of “alliteration” gave him the top prize.
