After your annual application is approved, you will automatically receive ballots for all elections occurring the remainder of the year. You do not need to submit an application for each election. The county will send you an annual renewal form so you can continue receiving ballots each year. When are the polls open on Election Day? The polls are open from 7:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. If you are in line when the polls close, you are entitled to vote. Do I need any identification (ID) to vote? If you have voted at your polling location before, you do not need to bring ID to vote. Only voters who are voting for the first time in their election district need to show ID. Acceptable ID includes both photo and non-photo ID. Acceptable IDs for first-time voters: Driver’s license U.S. passport Military, student, or employee ID, Voter registration card Firearm permit Current utility bill, bank statement, paycheck or government check Any ID issued by the commonwealth or federal government Note: An ID without your photo must have your address on it. If you are, you should be able to vote. If the county cannot find your name, but you believe you are registered and omitted from the poll book, you may vote a provisional ballot . What is a provisional ballot?  A provisional ballot is a paper ballot which is provided to voters who believe they are registered voters but whose names do not appear in the sign-in book at the polling place. If you are a first-time voter who does not provide ID at the polls on Election Day, you will be offered a provisional ballot. Learn more about voting with a provisional ballot . CORONAVIRUS SPARKS WORLDWIDE CONCERN

Making, equipping and inspiring disciples Sunday Morning 10am / Wednesday Night 7pm 510 New Bloomfield Rd. • Duncannon, PA 17020 717.834.5444 • Pastor Tim Eshenour church@aharvest.org • www.facebook/ahcduncannon 20

The dawn of 2020 ushered in many newsworthy headlines, but few have turned the heads of the masses as sharply as the arrival of a novel coronavirus that was first identified in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. In late 2019, Chinese authorities identified the new virus, which has resulted in scores of confirmed cases in China, and additional cases identified in a growing number of international locations. Both the World Health Organization and The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention have closely monitored the coronavirus, which was named COVID-19 in mid-February 2020. The public is understandably concerned, but educating oneself about COVID-19 and coronaviruses in general can assuage some fears. WHAT IS A CORONAVIRUS? Medical News Today reports that coronaviruses typically affect the respiratory tracts of mammals. Coronaviruses are responsible for between 15 and 30 percent of common colds. They’re also associated with pneumonia and severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS. Coronaviruses were given their name based on the crown-like projections on their surfaces (in Latin, “corona” means “halo” or “crown”). Coronavirus antibodies do not last or work for very long, so a person who becomes ill can catch the same virus again a few months later. Also, antibodies for one strain of coronavirus may not be effective against other strains. WHAT IS COVID-19? In 2019, a new type of coronavirus not previously identified was discovered in China. Like other coronaviruses, this virus, COVID-19, can be spread easily from person to person, particularly through respiratory droplets acquired when someone with the virus coughs or sneezes. Most often people need to be within six feet of the infected person for contraction. The CDC says that COVID-19 also is believed to be spread from animals to people. It’s currently unclear if a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching his oer her own mouth, nose or eyes. Those confirmed as having the virus reported illnesses ranging from mild symptoms like fever, cough and shortness of breath to more severe illness. Reactions to COVID-19 can differ from individual to individual. It’s believed that symptoms of COVID-19 can appear in as few as two days or as long as 14 after exposure. Those who have been in China or around others who have visited from China and are experiencing cold or flu symptoms are advised call their physicians. PREVENTION AND TREATMENT The WHO says that if a person is healthy, he or she only needs to wear a mask if this person is taking care of another with a suspected COVID-19 infection. One also should wear a mask if he or she is coughing or sneezing. Doctors advise that frequent handwashing, and in the absence of warm, soapy water, alcohol-based sanitizers that are at least 60 percent alcohol can be effective in preventing transmission of COVID-19. Also avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands. Currently there is no specific antiviral treatment for the disease; people should receive supportive care for symptoms. However, research into antiviral drugs, such as those for HIV and influenza, are being tested for their potential efficacy against COVID-19, Research into developing a vaccine for this novel coronavirus also is ongoing. Concerned individuals should speak with their healthcare providers for accurate, upto-date information about COVID-19 as global health organizations continue to monitor conditions and treatments. –Source Metro Creative Graphics editorial THE REMEDY

CHICKEN SOUP IS GOOD FOR MORE THAN THE SOUL

Cold season never seems to take a year off. Experts estimate that colds are so widespread that very few humans escape infection. Some people come down with colds more than once per year. That should not come as too great a surprise, as there are now thought to be more than 200 different strains of cold. For the past 50 years, researchers studied two classes of viruses responsible for a total of roughly 100 different incarnations of the common cold. Two years ago, after development of molecular techniques to look at the viral genome, researchers found a third class of rhinoviruses, according to James Gern, MD, an asthma specialist at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health. This

discovery doubled the number of potential cold viruses. While there’s no cure for the common cold, cold remedies have been around for centuries. Chicken soup remains one of the more popular cold remedies. Grandmothers have long espoused the virtues of chicken soup with regard to treating colds, but now research is backing up those claims. Researchers have long examined the potential health benefits of chicken soup in an attempt to understand why it seems to be such an effective tonic at treating colds. A 1998 report found that broth may help improve the function of the tiny hairs in noses called cilia. The cilia help prevent contagions from getting into the body. Hot fluids also can help increase the movement of nasal mucus, helping to relieve stuffiness and congestion. Chicken soup also can help reduce inflammation, which often results as the immune system works to fight the cold virus. A study in the journal Chest found that chicken soup appears to inhibit neutrophil chemotaxis, which is the movement of certain immune cells to mucus membrane surfaces. As a result, mucus production is inhibited and cold symptoms are reduced. Chicken soup is loaded with immune-boosting vegetables and other ingredients that provide phytonutrients. The American Cancer Society defines phytonutrients, or phytochemicals, as plant compounds like carotenoids, lycopene, resveratrol, and phytosterols that are thought to have health-protecting qualities. Chicken soup may also contain onions and garlic, which are believed to have natural antibacterial or antiseptic properties. An easily digestible comfort food, chicken soup also helps a person feel better because it effectively delivers vitamins and minerals. While some profess that homemade chicken soup is the key to fighting a cold, many commercially-made soups fit the bill as well. The salt, steam, vegetables, chicken protein, and soothing broth combine to form a worthy adversary to the common cold.

Editor’s Note...

What a month it’s been, mid March the Corona 19 Virus took over our country and our communities. People were asked to stay home for 14 days and certain businesses were asked to close their doors and then some were mandated to do so. Many of them are still closed as I type this but I decided to press on and come out with an April issue as #1 papers are allowed to be open and also I believe it will be encouraging to see something out in the stores that you’re use to seeing. We have been doing the Shopper’s Remedy for 37 years and hope to continue to be out for years to come. Now is the time to support your local businesses as much as possible. Please consider going to a local store before going to the big box stores that includes places like Mutzabaugh’s in Duncannon, Sharar’s in Newport, SBS Superior Building Products in Loysville, Mountain Supply Hardware & Grocery in Ickesburg and so many more. When the stores are allowed open please, please support them. Many are still opened and ready to provide you with the customer service that is so prominent in a small family business. Also support our local restaurants as well. I am very thankful that so many placed ads in this month’s issue, this too shall pass and we will survive if we join forces. Many events have been canceled so if you’re planning to go to something it would be a good idea to call ahead and make sure that particular event is happening. We will all be thankful to get our lives back to some form of normalcy and I am sure we are all going to appreciate our jobs and each other even more. Also another reason to shop locally is that the stores aren’t as crowded. Many communities are coming up with unique ways to minister to our children and to keep each other entertained. Hopefully in May we can emerge as an even better and closer knitted community. So many people are reaching out taking care of each other. Just want to remind you if you’re having a Yard Sale coming up we will be happy to list it for FREE. Also the classifieds truly are free if you need to make some extra money. How do we survive you ask, by our display advertisers so please go through the paper and support as many as you are able

Arpil, 2020

and please tell them you saw their ad in The Shopper’s Remedy. Our advertisers do want to know if their ad dollars are working. In times of trials and tribulations it is wonderful to have a relationship with Jesus Christ our Savior and to be able to stand on and proclaim the promises of God that have survived for over 2,000 years. Sitting in the presence of God is such a sweet privilege and keeps one focused on what does really matter and that is people. May the love of God surround you, flow through you and keep you in the days a head. Love to One & All... Robin
