HISTORY OF LABOR DAY

Labor Day, the first Monday in September, is a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and well-being of our country. Through the years the nation gave increasing emphasis to Labor Day. The first governmental recognition came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. From these, a movement developed to secure state legislation. The first state bill was introduced into the New York legislature, but the first to become law was passed by Oregon on February 21, 1887. During the year four more states — Colorado, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and New York — created the Labor Day holiday by legislative enactment. By the end of the decade Connecticut, Nebraska, and Pennsylvania had followed suit. By 1894, 23 other states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers, and on June 28 of that year, Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. More than 100 years after the first Labor Day observance, there is still some doubt as to who first proposed the holiday for workers. Some records show that Peter J. McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners and a cofounder of the American Federation of Labor, was first in suggesting a day to honor those “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.” But Peter McGuire’s place in Labor Day history has not gone unchallenged. Many believe that Matthew Maguire, a machinist, not Peter McGuire, founded the holiday. Recent research seems to support the contention that Matthew Maguire, later the secretary of Local 344 of the International Association of Machinists in Paterson, N.J.,

proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York. What is clear is that the Central Labor Union adopted a Labor Day proposal and appointed a committee to plan a demonstration and picnic. The first Labor Day holiday was celebrated on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, in accordance with the plans of the Central Labor Union. The Central Labor Union held its second Labor Day holiday just a year later, on September 5, 1883. In 1884 the first Monday in September was selected as the holiday, as originally proposed, and the Central Labor Union urged similar organizations in other cities to follow the example of New York and celebrate a “workingmen’s holiday” on that date. The idea spread with the growth of labor organizations, and in 1885 Labor Day was celebrated in many industrial centers of the country. Women’s Auxiliary Typographical UnionThe form that the observance and celebration of Labor Day should take was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday — a street parade to exhibit to the public “the strength and esprit de corps of the trade and labor organizations” of the community, followed by a festival for the recreation and amusement of the workers and their families. This

became the pattern for the celebrations of Labor Day. Speeches by prominent men and women were introduced later, as more emphasis was placed upon the economic and civic significance of the holiday. Still later, by a resolution of the American Federation of Labor convention of 1909, the Sunday preceding Labor Day was adopted as Labor Sunday and dedicated to the spiritual and educational aspects of the labor movement. The vital force of labor added materially to the highest standard of living and the greatest production the world has ever known and has brought us closer to the realization of our traditional ideals of economic and political democracy. It is appropriate, therefore, that the nation pay tribute on Labor Day to the creator of so much of the nation’s strength, freedom, and leadership — the American worker. “Ask us, BEIDLER AG for Seed & Equipment to Harvest High Quality Feed” Glenn Beidler 112 Davidston Rd. Imagine

you want to get accepted into the best college in the country. So you send them a Youtube link of you performing a song and dance routine to the school’s alma mater. Maybe you’d include some links to news articles praising your accomplishments. Or maybe you’d just show up on the first day of classes and declare, “Here I am!” How do you think that would work out? Ridiculous, isn’t it? Clearly, if you want to gain admission, you would visit the school’s website, look up their admission requirements, fill out an application, and do all they require. Much in the same way, Heaven has an admission requirement (just one). It’s described in detail in the Handbook, otherwise known as the Bible. God went to a great deal of trouble to set up a process for admission, and He made sure to leave clear instructions. The good news is that admission isn’t restricted to perfect people! Whether you’ve messed up a little or a lot, your slate can be wiped clean, and you can be made new from the inside out. Sadly, failing to meet God’s requirement renders even your good deeds as worthless as that song and dance routine. Find out about heaven’s admission requirement at aharvest.org/good-news, or give us a call. And stop in for a visit. We’d love to help you along your way.

USE FOOD TO HELP YOU MAINTAIN A HEALTHY WEIGHT Maintaining or adopting a healthy lifestyle involves a host of factors. Getting off the couch to be more active is one such factor, as is taking control of your diet so it’s helping you and not hurting you. While adopting a more active lifestyle is a relatively simple step for many people, modifying a diet is oftentimes a much steeper hill to climb. Dietary habits can be hard to break. But altering your selections so the food you consume is helping you instead of hurting you is possible, and you won’t have to abandon your favorite foods, either. The following are a few tips aimed at helping you make your diet work for you. * Choose the right foods. Many people feel the culprit behind their unhealthy weight is the portions they consume. While portion size might have something to do with it, the foods you’re eating are likely the primary suspect. If your diet is devoid of fruits, vegetables and whole grains and the dairy products you choose are not fat-free or low-fat, then this could be why you have difficulty maintaining a healthy weight. Choose low-fat or fat-free, formerly known as “skim,” milk and dairy products instead of whole milk for your morning cereal or when preparing recipes that call for cheese. In ad-

dition, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend eating plenty of fruits, vegetables and whole grains each day. Choose lean meat when buying red meat, but don’t overdo it even if you are buying lean meat. Red meat once per week might be enough to satisfy your craving, so enjoy poultry and fish for dinner on other nights of the week. * Alter your recipes. Many of the foods you enjoy may not be unhealthy. But how you prepare those foods could be compromising their nutritional value or unnecessarily adding calories and causing weight gain. For example, fried foods are typically loaded with salt and contain more calories than foods that are baked or grilled. Foods that are fried are typically fried in oil, and that oil undergoes changes to its molecular structure during the frying process. The molecules become harmful free radicals that can damage the body’s cells while negatively affecting your cholesterol levels and your body weight. Instead of frying foods like fish or chicken, grill or bake them instead. It’s alright to occasionally indulge in some fried chicken or other popular fried foods, but keep such indulgences to a minimum.

Another way to alter your recipes is to replace potentially harmful ingredients with lower-calorie alternatives. When preparing a meal that calls for butter, choose a more heart-healthy alternative such as a low-calorie butter spread. You likely won’t be able to taste the difference, but your body will feel the difference. * Plan your snacks. Many people run into trouble when they find themselves hungry in the hours between lunch and dinner. Healthy snacks that are rich in nutrients do not seem as readily available as snacks like potato chips or cookies that provide little or no nutritional value. But snack time does not have to be a daily sacrifice of discipline in favor of convenience.

SIMPLE & HEALTHY WAYS TO BOOST YOUR ENERGY LEVELS

As a day wears on, many men and women find their energy levels steadily decreasing. Some resort to a cup of coffee, while others prefer a sugary snack to get more pep. Such solutions are not always healthy and rarely provide more than a temporary jolt of energy. So what are men and women to do when the inevitable post-lunch doldrums rear their ugly heads? Oftentimes the best way to remedy a dip in energy levels is to prevent it in the first place. There are several simple and healthy ways to boost your energy levels so you don't find yourself falling flat in the afternoon. * Drink water throughout the day. Water is a versatile beverage that serves many purposes, not the least of which is its ability to make a positive impact on your energy levels. When the body does not get enough water, it can send a variety of signals that are easily misread. The symptoms of thirst or dehydration can easily be confused for hunger, which may cause you to eat more during the day, and that food can make you feel sluggish as the day progresses. Even slight dehydration can make you feel fatigued. If drinking water isn't a part of your daily routine and you find yourself feeling fatigued on a regular basis, start drinking water and your energy levels will likely increase. Water is an especially good way to boost your energy levels thanks to its availability and affordability. * Don't skip meals. Skipping meals is robbing your body of the fuel it needs to get through the day. Skipping breakfast is especially harmful, as you will be starting the day off essentially on a fast and your energy levels will suffer as a result. A healthy breakfast that includes whole grain cereals or breads as well as some fruit and lean protein is a great way to start the day off energized. And no matter how busy you are during the day, be sure

facebook.com/The Shopper’s Remedy August, 2018

to eat a healthy lunch, ideally one that includes some protein. Protein is important because it takes the body longer to break down protein than it does carbohydrates, giving you an energy source that lasts longer than a lunch without any protein. * Exercise. Fatigue can be a byproduct of a body that's overworked but also a side effect of a body that isn't being worked enough. Daily exercise will increase your energy levels, even if the exercise is minimal. Research conducted at The California State University found that even a brisk 10-minute walk increased energy levels for as much as two hours. If your energy levels tend to start waning in the afternoon, consider a short, mid-afternoon jaunt. The dividends such a walk pays regarding your energy levels may just last until it's time to call it a day. * Don't cut too many calories. Men and women fighting fatigue may feel as though their weight is the main culprit behind that lethargy. Though being overweight or obese can have a negative impact on energy levels, it's important men and women don't cut too many calories from their diets when attempting to lose weight. Doing so may slow your metabolism, which can cause feelings of fatigue. If you are overweight or obese, you may very well need to cut calories, but don't do so at the expense of your energy levels. Many men and women find themselves battling fatigue come the mid- to late-afternoon. Though it's easy to pour yourself another cup of coffee or lean on an energy drink

Something as simple as drinking more water throughout the day can dramatically improve your energy levels. once the post-lunch listlessness rears its ugly head, there are several alternatives to such remedies that can be more effective at boosting your energy levels over the long haul.
