Newport, PA.Pick up a fair book IT’S COMING BACK AGAIN—Popular Outdoor Flea Market and Craft Show returns to the MILLERSTOWN AREA COMMUNITY PARK! Plans have been finalized for the popular outdoor flea market and Craft Show sponsored by Millerstown Community Success, Inc for Saturday, August 27; Rain date will be Saturday, September 3. This great popular event will be at the Millerstown Area Community Park, just off of 22-322 Millerstown Exit on Old Route 22-322 east of Millerstown beside the Millerstown Community Swimming Pool. There will be plenty of room for both vendor

set up and shopper parking at the sprawling and spacious park facility. The event will be held from 7 a.m until 2 p.m.

Vendors can arrive beginning at 5:30 a.m; no reservations are required and a nominal $10 set up fee will be charged to set up for the day. Spaces measure 15 x 25 feet, fees will be collected after set up, and ask our vendors to stay set up until the closing time. All types of vendors are being sought for over 100 available spaces; there’s plenty of room for everyone. Flea Market Vendors, Yard Sale Vendors, Antique Vendors, Craft Vendors, Collectible Vendors, Business Vendors, and Farm Produce Vendors are invited to set up for the popular market; all spaces will allow vendors to park their vehicles right on the space and sell from their trailers, trucks, or cars.

A food and drink stand will be operated by MCSI throughout the day; there will be plenty of parking for shoppers, and restroom facilities are available. Millerstown Community Success, Inc (MCSI) is Millerstown’s newest community organization and is incorporated and has become a 501-c3, non-profit organization. Among the organization’s goals are to create positive community spirit and unity, develop pride in home and property ownership and to revitalize the historic town square. IT’S COMING BACK AGAIN—Popular Outdoor Flea Market and Craft Show returns to the MILLERSTOWN AREA COMMUNITY PARK!

Plans have been finalized for the popular outdoor flea market and Craft Show sponsored by Millerstown Community Success, Inc for Saturday, August 27; Rain date will be Saturday, September 3.

This great popular event will be at the Millerstown Area Community Park, just off of 22-322 Millerstown Exit on Old Route 22-322 east of Millerstown beside the Millerstown Community Swimming Pool.

There will be plenty of room for both vendor set up and shopper parking at the sprawling and spacious park facility. The event will be held from 7 a.m until 2 p.m. Vendors can arrive beginning at 5:30 a.m; no reservations are required and a nominal $10 set up fee will be charged to set up for the day. Spaces measure 15 x 25 feet, fees will be collected after set up, and ask our vendors to stay set up until the closing time.

All types of vendors are being sought for over 100 available spaces; there’s plenty of room for everyone.

Flea Market Vendors, Yard Sale Vendors, Antique

Vendors, Craft Vendors, Collectible Vendors, Business Vendors, and Farm Produce Vendors are invited to set up for the popular market; all spaces will allow vendors to park their vehicles right on the space and sell from their trailers, trucks, or cars.

A food and drink stand will be operated by MCSI throughout the day; there will be plenty of parking for shoppers, and restroom facilities are available.

Millerstown Community Success, Inc (MCSI) is Millerstown’s newest community organization and is incorporated and has become a 501-c3, non-profit organization. The following programs are scheduled at Little Buffalo State Park and are available for immediate release.

Saturdays & Sundays in August - 1-3pm – Shoaff’s Mill Tours Shoaff’s Mill is an 1840’s era Grist Mill that operates from May to October on weekends from 1-3pm. Shoaff’s Mill is generally open on Saturdays and Sundays, 1-3pm from midMay through mid-Oct. Closings may occur due to staffing shortages -Registrations are not required - this is a first come, first serve facility. If you have any questions or concerns, or need special accommodations, please email mmarker@pa.gov.

Sundays in August – 1-4pm – Blue Ball Tavern Tours Step back in time into an 1800s tavern in the basement of the Blue Ball Tavern Museum.

The tavern dates prior to 1811 and was an important resting place for traveling soldiers during the War of 1812. It was also used heavily during the Civil War, the building of the Juniata division of the Erie Canal, and was the location where Perry County was formed and separated from Cumberland County.

Run by the Historical Society, this extensive collection of artifacts is cared for by volunteers, so staff may not always be able to open. Call the Little Buffalo park office at 717-567-9255 for special opening days or unexpected closures. Join the park naturalists for an intro to fishing program! All ages are welcome, but those aged 16 years and older must have a fishing license to participate (basic - no trout stamp necessary). Children do not need a license but parents do if they are actively participating. Fishing rods, bait and tackle are included.

We will be fishing on the lake shore/pier in the Shoaff’s Mill Area at the main boat launch on Boat Launch Road.

Aug. 5th – 10am - Branching Out: Tree ID Basics Trees are all around us - in fact, there are over 100 species found regularly in PA. But can you tell a spruce from a fir? How about a Norway maple from a Sugar Maple? Learn tips and tricks to ID’ing some of our common backyard trees using bark, leaves, and seeds and discover the diversity of trees around you. We will meet near the stage in the Shoaff’s Mill Area and then walk along the Mill Race Trail.

Aug. 6th - 10am - Fossil Frenzy: Digging through PA’s Past Did you know we have fossils right under our feet? Come learn about the types of fossils we find here at Little Buffalo, how they were created, and what they can tell us about our past. Then we’ll try our hand as paleontologists and dig for some in our tried-and-true fossil hill! Program will meet at the overflowing parking area on Black Hill Road behind the campground wood shed.

August 6th - 5pm -Who’s Been Here? Animal CSI How good are your crime solving skills? Learn animal tracks and signs as we work through several miniature crime scenes and discover tips and tricks to help you figure out who’s been here! This program will be held at the campground pavilion, which is located on the hill above and across from the modern cabin. Please park in the lower extra car lot and walk up the hill if you are able. There is limited parking on the hill for those who need it.

August 6th - 7:30pm - Bats! They’re often feared and often hated, but the world’s only truly flying mammals are fascinating and important parts of our ecosystem, not to mention they benefit humans in a variety of ways! Come and learn just why these creatures are so important, and walk with us afterwards to search for some! We will be going on a walk after our bat discussion to look for bats, but we should see some at the stage where we will meet for this event. The walk is optional. The stage is located in the Shoaff’s Mill Day Use Area next to pavilion 3.

August 7th - 10am – 11am - Attracting Pollinators Want to learn how to turn your garden into a pollinator’s paradise? Stop by the butterfly garden during this hour to explore our garden’s selection of wildflowers and herbs and learn how to pick the best plants to attract wildlife to your yard. We’ll also discuss the life cycles and needs of bees and butterflies and look for caterpillars in the garden.

The butterfly garden is located in the Shoaff’s Mill day use area. This is a come anytime during the hour program.

Aug. 9th - 2pm - PA Mammals Past & Present While we don’t have any buffalo (despite our name!) there sure are a lot of other furry creatures to be found here.

Come test your skills of identifying furs & skulls and learn about the PA mammals that live in the park! Stop by at any point to learn about these amazing creatures, we will have a table set up near the entrance to the Pool.

Aug. 9th - 6pm - Intro to Kayaking Are you new to kayaking and don’t know where to begin?

If you are thinking about getting into kayaking, join us for a crash course in the basics of kayaks. We have limited space and boats available, so please do not register if you have kayaked with us before. Register by visiting the DCNR Calendar of Events. Must be 12 years and older and able to handle an adult kayak to join us. Those under 18 MUST be with a parent. If you have questions, concerns or require special accommodations, please reach out to qheist@pa.gov. We will meet at the small grey kayak shed located next to the main boat launch in the Shoaff’s Mill Area, on Boat Launch Road.

August 13th – 10am - Dragons & Damsels Odonata is the order of the dragonflies and damselflies.

Over 150 species of these fascinating insects are found in Pennsylvania, and their colors and sizes vary widely. In this program we’ll explore the differences between these dragons and damsels, discuss their lifecycle, and attempt to capture some to get a closer look. This program will be a first come, first serve. We will meet at the stage in the Shoaff’s Mill day use area. Equipment for capturing insects is limited. All ages are welcome, but this is recommended for older children and adults.

Aug. 19th - 10am - Stream Study Have you ever wondered what lives in Little Buffalo’s stream? A huge variety of creatures live among the rocks, from insects and crawdads to salamanders and fish. We will get into the stream and learn about the incredible macroinvertebrates that call it home and how scientists use these creatures to determine the health of the stream. We will provide nets, strainers, and containers to view the creatures we find. You may bring your own equipment, but please make sure it is thoroughly cleaned and dried to prevent the spread of invasives. All creatures will be released unharmed after the program. Boots are recommended as the water is very cold, but water shoes are acceptable. No need to register. Equipment is available on a first come, first serve basis. Program will take place in the Shoaff’s Mill Area at the picnic tables near the stream.

August 20th - 6pm - Owl Outlaws Join us for a case of HOO done it as we investigate a crime and attempt to clear the name of our Owl Outlaws! Learn what makes owls such fearsome predators and why their unique adaptations gave them a bad reputation in the early settlement of Pennsylvania. We will not have any live owls. This program will be held at the campground pavilion, which is located on the hill above the extra car parking lot. Parking is close for those who need it – please park in the extra car parking lot below the pavilion if you are able to. Look for signs! The campground is located on Black Hill Road. Turn left at the firewood shed before you get to the campground.

August 24th - 10am- 12pm - Beautiful Birds Want to learn about our feathered friends? Join us as we explore feathers, eggs, bills, nests, and all things avian!

This program is geared towards elementary aged kids, but all ages are welcome to join. Please register through the DCNR Calendar of Events or by calling the park office at 717-567-9255. This event will be held at pavilion 3 in the Shoaff’s Mill Area of the park.

August 24th - 1pm – 2:30pm – Slime & Scales Stick around after lunch to learn about some of our more slimy and scaley friends! We will learn the difference between reptiles and amphibians and explore shells, eggs, skin, and life cycles of these animals. This program is geared towards elementary aged kids, but all ages are welcome to join. Please register through the DCNR Calendar of Events or by calling the park office at 717-567-9255.

This event will be held at pavilion 3 in the Shoaff’s Mill Area of the park.

Aug. 27th - 9am - Birding Walk – Pav 1/2. Join the park naturalist for an afternoon bird walk along the Creek Trail to see what feather friends live and are passing through our park. Please bring your own binoculars if able, though the park has some that can be lent out if needed. Walk will begin in the Pavilion 1 & 2 Parking Lot in the Pool Day Use Area and the trail may be wet, so please dress appropriately!
