(MCSI) has just announced that they 4
will sponsor their 26th Annual Spring Fling Craft Show on Saturday, March 10 from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. in the Greenwood Elementary School along Route 17 in Millerstown Borough. Doors will open at 7:45 a.m. to accommodate early shoppers. Over 100 vendor spaces are available, and interested crafters are invited to reserve limited space by calling (717) 589-3598. A great variety of hand crafted merchandise, gifts, and decorating items will be featured for sale. The annual event is planned each year to coincide with Easter, Mother’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day and spring house cleaning and decorating. MCSI recommends the show as “one of the finest shows that is held in Central Pennsylvania.” Each year, hundreds of shoppers visit the show to find special gifts for themselves, for others, and for decorating their homes—it’s a spring tradition that you won’t want to miss. The show is a great place to find items for Easter Baskets and the MCSI urges everyone to shop at home and support the local economy right here in Perry County and buy gifts that are made in the USA. Delicious refreshments will be sold throughout the day including breakfast items and sandwiches, and admission is always free to the show. There is a limited amount of vendor space available and the MCSI is always looking for new vendors, so interested craftspeople should call 717-589-3598 for additional information of space rental. Space is restricted to vendors who make their own crafts; no commercial vendors will be accepted.
EVENT: Plans have been finalized for the annual Pinochle card party sponsored by the Millerstown Lions Club in Millerstown. The event will be held on Saturday, March 3 at the Greenwood Elementary School just off Route 17 East in Millerstown Borough, Perry County. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the party will begin at 6 p.m. sharp. This annual event has been held by the Millerstown Lions for many years and is recognized as one of the most popular events of its kind in the area. Prizes generously donated by local businesses will be awarded to the lucky winners and nearly everyone is guaranteed a prize. In addition to the prizes given out, there is usually an auction of different items so players should come prepared to find some bargains during the auction. Profits from the annual event benefits Lions District 14T projects including sight, diabetes, Beacon Lodge, Leader Dog and many others. Cost of the party is only $8 per person, which includes refreshments. Local residents are invited to get out of the house after the long winter to enjoy a fun evening of cards, refreshments, and fellowship while helping the
many projects that Lions Clubs support. For additional information, readers may call Curt Black at 717-589-3598. EVENTS: Commemorating Ickesburg Bi-centennial 2018 is no easy task for the many volunteers, who are eagerly preparing for the July 24-29 celebration to be held at the Ickesburg Volunteer Fire Company grounds. In conjunction with the annual carnival, the 200th birthday bash will feature the replica of the beloved Vietnam Memorial Wall, from Thurs., July 26 – July 29 at the edge of the popular carnival grounds in Ickesburg. Open to the public for viewing, and searching for names of friends and relatives, the wall ( AVTT ) once set up by days end on July 26 will be ready for free access by the public. The Ickesburg Bi-Centennial committee says that planned special services each evening from 6 pm – 8 pm., at the wall, welcome public participation. “Days Gone By “ is the theme for the planned parade on July 28 starting at 10 am from the East end of Ickesburg. Organizations and interested folks are encouraged to enter a float based on the theme, or march in the special event, becoming a part of living history. Jim Swenson, of Swenson Fuels, New Bloomfield, has volunteered his expertise in fire company parade planning, can provide additional information ( 717-582-2833 ). Gary Eby, New Bloomfield, long time fire company participant, and event planner, is also volunteering with the group. Further information can be obtained ( www.IckesburgFire.Com), or the Saville Township, or Ickesburg Bi-Centennial website or Facebook. Along with the crocks and textiles to commemorate the event, the Ickesburg Bi-Centennial Committee has commissioned, a one of a kind, Henry Rifle, sporting an engraving of the Ickesburg Bi-Centennial logo, to be raffled on July 28 . The rifle is a Henry Lever Action 22 with Octagon Barrel Model #H001T. The $10 tickets (feature not only the specially designed gun, but cash as well: 5 cash prizes starting at $250), are available from any committee member, or by contacting Terry Urich ( 717-438-3396 ), or Jack Furler ( 717-438-3306 ). The Ickesburg Bi-Centennial committee is tirelessly working on fundraising, and planning for The Day’s Gone By Celebration. Soutner’s Celebrating 40 Successful Years in the Retail Business In October of 2017 Joe and Beth Soutner celebrated their 40th year of running a successful retail business at 13 S. Second Street in Newport, PA. In 1977, Beth at the age of 21 was working at the Juanita Valley Bank in Millerstown and Joe (22) had been working at Hill’s Department Store for about 5 years. At the bank, Beth worked with Karen Howe, Pete Howe’s wife. Karen told Beth that Pete would be running for office and that they would be selling the Montgomery Wards Catalog store that they owned. Beth went home and told Joe about it. Joe already had 5 years of retail experience and knew working for a big company they would want him to move to various locations and so the decision was made that they would make an offer and keep their roots in Perry County where they both had lived all their lives and weren’t anxious to move. In October of 1977 Montgomery Wards headquarters out of Baltimore, Maryland awarded Joe and Beth the franchise in Newport at 13 S. Second St. The couple worked hard and established themselves as a business that provided excellent “customer service” and for 9 years the business continued to flourish and Joe and Beth got involved with the Newport Community supporting the schools year books and attending the Perry County Fair and enjoying life and basically just running the catalog service. It was a great service for the area as back then you didn’t just rush to the mall, people were accustomed to ordering from a catalog for the convenience. Then in 1986 Montgomery Wards decided to close their catalog stores, it was rather sudden and left Joe and Beth with no income and a very limited business. They hadn’t yet learned to diversify. They liked having their own business though so they reached out to JC Penney’s catalog services, and after 4 months were back providing a much needed service to the area. They did learn their lesson though and actually JC Penney encouraged them to offer other products and services to their customers. They wanted to do something that no one else was offering in the area and Beth (after much thought and consideration) believed that a quality card and gift store would be a great addition to the community. They approached the Hallmark Company and in
DRIVE A LITTLE, SAVE A LOT!
Diane Payne (long time employee), Beth & Joe and of course Bella (official greeter) 1989 they added cards and gifts to their store. They started adding more and more gifts that they thought their customers would like and their card selection continued to grow. They decided they needed more room so they converted the 2nd floor from an apartment to add to their store and called it “The County Store Upstairs.” Then in 2013 JC Penney closed their catalog division as the internet sales were making catalog sales more or less obsolete, This time they were better prepared for the change as they have gone through ups and downs in their business over they years. Joe and Beth have learned to constantly add new items for their customers to choose from. Joe says it continually changes what people are interested in buying. It all depends on the economy. At one time Boyd Bears and Longberger baskets were all the rage but now people are getting away from collectibles and are more into finding unique gift items and things for their homes. Soutner’s carries a full line of Yankee candles and has some of the best prices around. They also give you a 15% discount on your card purchases. They carry the Hallmark collectible ornaments as well as rows of cards to choose from for any occasion. The last few years they have added women’s clothing

Gift certificates are available as well if you have someone on your gift list that enjoys unique decor for their homes. Joe and Beth spend many hours at the store and have always had their beloved pets behind the counter. Belle is their newest member of the family and is always there to greet anyone and everyone who walks through the door and loves to be petted. When you shop at Soutner’s Hallmark & The Country Store the entire staff makes you feel welcomed and they are always ready to help you find what you’re looking for and they are also good at just letting one browse through the many treasures that are everywhere on the two floors. Joe and Beth have seen many changes over the 40 year span and have overcome many obstacles but they do enjoy what they do and there is never a dull moment in their lives. They work hard for their customers and enjoy providing unique gift items for the citizens of Perry County and beyond.

4 EASY WAYS TO CREATE MORE TIME IN YOUR DAY
Managing one’s time can sometimes feel like an uphill battle. As a result, adults with hectic schedules and multiple responsibilities may pine for an extra hour or two in the day. While it’s impossible to extend a day from 24 to 26 hours, there are ways for busy men and women to create more time in their day. 1. Embrace organization tools. Whether it’s day planners, smartphone reminders or more traditional print calendars with meetings and deadlines written on them, organization tools can greatly cut back on time spent trying to remember and/or confirm meeting times, project schedules, deadlines, and other obligations. 2. Assess your productivity. Some people are most productive in the mornings, while others do not hit their strides until after lunch. Identify the time or times of day when you tend to be most productive, and make an effort to focus exclusively on work during these times. Resist any urge to schedule meetings or conference calls during those times of day when you are most productive, as it can be hard to multitask or focus when discussing projects with coworkers or clients. 3. Minimize distractions. Social media, the internet and texting can distract attention away from tasks that must be completed, ultimately affecting how quickly and efficiently such projects are finished. Make a concerted effort to avoid social media and the internet while at work, and turn off smartphone alerts that entice you to go online. In addition, turn off text alerts if they are proving too great a distraction. 4. Reconsider your commute. Professionals who drive to work but find themselves sitting in traffic on their way to and from work can investigate possible alternatives to driving themselves. Public transportation might not get you to work more quickly than driving yourself, but time spent on a bus or train can be used to work on projects and check and answer work-related emails, clearing up time later in the day. Time spent behind the wheel of an automobile cannot be safely spent working.
GET ON THE FAST TRACK TO BEING ORGANIZED Getting organized is on the mind of people throughout the year, but even more so at the end of December when individuals are making their New Year’s resolutions. According to the data pulled from Google by iQuanti, 33,230,420 searches were made about “getting organized” in 2016. People are still interested in finding out ways to streamline their lives and conquer the clutter. Even though getting organized may seem like an arduous task, there are ways to get organized and do so quickly. Keep a cleanup bin handy. Put an empty basket in a central location, using it to gather stray items scattered around main living areas. Once everything has been collected, items can be returned to their rightful place. Make the bed. One of the easiest ways to keep a room looking neat is to make the bed each day. Store clean linens in a pillow case so the entire set is together and ready to go. Purge closets and cabinets. There’s no point allowing old, stained or damaged items to take up space. Set aside days to clear expired medication from the bathroom cabinet, discard ripped or ill-fitting clothing from the closet, or to dispose of broken toys in a nursery. Write things down. Tasks seem more manageable when they are written down in black-and-white and can be crossed off as completed. Writing things down also helps make the mind feel more organized. Exercise caution before buying. Don’t buy more than you need; otherwise, you’ll have to find space for extra items. Also, keep inventory of food and supplies in the house so you’re not unwittingly buying duplicates. Sort mail and paperwork. Establish different categories for papers so they can be sorted and discarded as needed. These may include bills, invitations, school papers, and junk mail. Reduce paper clutter by opting for digital correspondence when possible. Make one repair at a time. Tackle that source of stress by focusing on one repair and seeing it through to completion. Delegate the work. If kids want to help organize, let them. It can be a fun project for an adolescent to rearrange the pantry or offer their ideas for corralling messes February, 2018

Unique Ways to Celebrate Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is an opportunity for couples to celebrate their love for each other, whether their relationship is relatively new or has endured through many years. The National Retail Federation estimates that Americans are expected to spend close to $20 billion on Valentine’s Day this year. While chocolates and champagne are high on the list of most-purchased items for February 14th, couples should not feel beholden to tradition on Valentine’s Day. This year may be the perfect time to try something new, even if it’s out of couples’ comfort zones. Here are some novel ideas for couple’s looking to set their celebrations apart. • Paint and sip: Couples can take part in a growing trend this Valentine’s Day. At paint-and-sip events, people are guided step-by-step through the process of painting their own masterpieces. Breaks are provided through the evening to indulge in beverages and snacks of choice. Couples can bring along a bottle or two of wine and a platter of cheeses, chocolates or other Valentine’s Day fare. Those interested can inquire at their nearest

paint and sip location, such as Pinot’s Palette, for Valentine’s Day specials. • Activity night: Couples who are naturally competitive or devoted sports fans can enjoy the evening by engaging in some healthy competition. Some restaurants host trivia nights, or couples can head to the nearest arcade and battle it out. Panic and escape rooms are cropping up in towns across the country. These employ 60-minute real-life experiences in which participants must solve clues to escape the room. This can be a great bonding experience for fun-loving couples. • Chef lessons: Although some couples may dine out on Valentine’s Day, men and women who like to dabble in culinary arts can prepare their own meals from the comforts of their own kitchens. Others may want to enroll in classes that provide expert instruction from area chefs or culinary instructors. Cooking classes can be an ideal way to spend time together learning skills that can be put to use again and again. • Adventures: Couples who like to push the envelope can explore the possibilities of thrill-seeking activities. Some may include bungee-jumping, hot-air balloon rides, taking laps at the racetrack, or hitting the ski slopes. Valentine’s Day might be a time for romance, but couples should not hesitate to buck tradition and spend the day together engaging in activities that accommodate their interests.
