Perry County Council of the Arts (PCCA) offers its free Drop-in Art program for kids and families in several community locations this summer and fall. PCCA established Drop-in Art classes to offer fun and inspired creating sessions to local children and their families, which are free and open to the public.

OUTDOOR MARKET SET FOR MILLERSTOWN ON AUGUST 19th—at Millerstown Area Community Park, 110 West Juniata Parkway beside the Millerstown Community Swimming Pool. Plans have been finalized for the popular Outdoor Flea & Craft Market sponsored by Millerstown Community Success, Inc for Saturday, August 19; Rain date will be Saturday, August 26. There will be plenty of room for both vendor set up and shopper parking at the sprawling and spacious new park facility. This year’s flea market will be held from 7am until 1pm. Vendors can arrive after 5:30am NO RESERVATIONS are required and a nominal $10 set up fee will be charged to set up for the day. All types of vendors (except food vendors) are being sought for over 100 available spaces; there’s plenty of room for everyone. Flea Market Vendors, Yard Sale Vendors, Antique Vendors, Craft Vendors, Collectibles Vendors, Business Vendors, and Farm Produce Vendors are invited to set up for the popular market; all spaces will allow vendors to park their vehicles right on the space and sell from their trailers, trucks, or cars. All food rights are reserved by the sponsoring organization.

A food and drink stand will be operated by MCSI throughout the day; there will be plenty of parking for shoppers, & restroom facilities are available. Among the organization’s goals are to create positive community spirit and unity, develop pride in home and property ownership, revitalize the historic town square as well as support the development of the Millerstown Community Park and other venues in the townships surrounding Millerstown Borough. HOW TO GRILL THE PERFECT BURGER Could any food be as simplistic and delicious at the same time as a patty of beef on top of a crusty bun, served with lettuce, tomato and your choice of condiments? Burgers are the go-to item for barbecues, campouts, fast-food meals, and late night trips to the diner. A juicy burger can satisfy so many cravings in one sitting.

If ever there was a recipe to master, it would be grilling the perfect burger. Though barbecued burgers may seem easy to make, all too often burgers are botched by a few mistakes.

But don’t worry, burger mastery is within reach if you follow these simple tips. * Begin with fresh meat. Freshly ground meat will produce the best flavor. If you are unsure when the packaged ground beef was made, ask the butcher or someone in the meat department of the supermarket to grind you up a fresh batch. Otherwise, use a food processor or an attachment on a stand mixer to grind the meat yourself. * Fat has flavor. If you’re going to indulge in a burger, make sure it has a fair amount of fat content. Fat helps keep the burgers moist and juicy. Make sure the fat content is about 18 to 20 percent of the mix. This helps to guarantee flavorful burgers. * Keep the meat cold. Chilled burger patties will firm up and hold their shape better during cooking. Leave the pre-made patties in the refrigerator until the last minute. Keep patties on ice if you will be cooking burgers in batches. * Don’t overhandle the meat. Compressing the meat and handling it too much can lead to dry, dense burgers. Avoid tough meat by han-

dling it as little as possible. Keep your hands wet while shaping the patties so they’ll come together easily. * Oil up the grill. A clean, well-oiled grill prevents burgers from sticking during cooking. * Make sure the grill is super-hot. The goal is to cook burgers over high heat and fast. This is achieved with a very hot grill. It may only take three to five minutes per side to cook the burgers, depending on the thickness of the patty. * Flip only once. Wait until the burgers have been grilling for a few minutes and release easily from the grill grate. Flip them over and allow them to cook a few minutes more. This helps keep the juices inside the meat and prevents your burgers from turning into burnt hockey pucks. * Resist the urge to squash the burgers.

Pushing down on the burgers with the spatula will only force the juices out. If you want dry burgers, press them down. If you want nice, juicy burgers, step away from the spatula. * Allow the burgers to rest. Take the burgers off the grill and let them rest for 5 minutes so that all of their juice redistributes through the patty. Toast your hamburger buns and then serve the burgers with your favorite toppings.

STAY COOL THIS SUMMER WHILE LIMITING ENERGY CONSUMPTION For many homeowners, summer is all about staying cool. But that comfort comes with a hefty price tag.

According to the U.S. Department of Energy, air conditioners cost homeowners more than $29 billion a year in energy costs. While that’s often money well spent, there are ways to stay cool this summer while simultaneously limiting energy consumption.

Air conditioners are a necessity in areas where temperatures rise to uncomfortable and often unhealthy levels in the summertime. But employing air conditioners is not the only way for homeowners to keep their homes cool during the dog days of summer.

• Embrace strategic landscaping. The landscaping outside of a home can contribute to cooler climates inside the home. Deciduous trees shed their leaves annually, and when planted on the western and southern sides of a home, these trees can block the sun from entering the home during the hottest times of day, reducing the need to lower the thermostat on air conditioners. Of course, when these trees shed their leaves in late fall, sunlight can then make its way into the home, potentially reducing heating costs.

• Maintain air conditioners. Air conditioners contain air filters that, over time, can wear down and become dirty. The DOE notes that the relatively simple task of replacing and cleaning these air filters can reduce air conditioners’ energy consumption by as much as 15 percent. If the unit does not respond after routine filter maintenance, the DOE (energy.gov) lists issues with refrigerant, thermostat sensors and drainage as some common air conditioner problems. Homeowners who suspect these issues can contact certified professionals to inspect their units and perform any necessary repairs.

• Install ceiling fans. Cool people in a given room by installing ceiling fans in areas of the home that might be warm but not too hot during the summertime. Modern ceiling fans with the ENERGY STAR® logo can be as much as 75 percent more efficient than older models, and ceiling fans typically consume far less energy than air conditioners. Install fans that can rotate forward and in reverse, as the direction the fan is rotating can actually heat or cool a room. Consult the owner’s manual to determine which direction fans should be rotating in on hot and cold days.
