Saville Township and the village of Ickesburg residents , will honor Vietnam War Veterans and the traveling replica of the Vietnam Memorial Wall, which will be on display in Ickesburg, July 26-29 .. The Wall will arrive Wed., July 25, 3 pm., via a motorcade of Perry County Veterans. It will be assembled on Thursday morning, July 26th, above the Ickesburg Fire Company carnival grounds, in the ball field areas. The AVTT ( American Veterans Traveling Tribute to the Vietnam Memorial Wall) will be open 24 hours a day, for public viewing, starting at 1 pm. on Thursday. A computerized system is available to enable people to find loved ones whose names appear on the Wall. Veterans will be on hand to assist people in their searches, and with any special needs. The Perry County Veterans Affairs Office will also be represented to answer questions from any veteran or their family members. Beverages and foods will be available during limited hours at the Wall. The Ickesburg Bi-Centennial Committee has planned for commemorative services to be held at the Wall, Thursday through Saturday nights from 6 pm. - 8 pm. Local church choirs will present a salute to veterans from Perry County, and the surrounding counties. Military Veterans of all armed force branches will participate, as well as local officials, and other musical tributes. The services will be prior to the nightly musical entertainment during the Ickesburg Fire Company’s annual carnival, which coincides with the bi-centennial events. Sunday morning, July 29th, starting at 10 am.,Perry County relatives of servicemen whose names appear on the Wall will be recognized and honored, during a closing church service for the bi-centennial week. Those veterans of the Vietnam War era will also receive special recognition for their years of service. They will be part of a special pinning ceremony conducted by county servicemen and officials. The Ickesburg Bi-Centennial Committee, the township of Saville, and the Ickesburg Fire Company, are very proud to be able to raise the funds ( $10,000 ) in order to bring the Wall to Perry County and their neighboring counties, for the first time in recent history. Saville Township residents have achieved another historical milestone while commemorating their 200 years! More information can be found on the Ickesburg Bi-Centennial Facebook page. This year’s flea market will be held from 7 am until 1 p.m. Vendors can arrive after 5:30 a.m. no reservations are required and a nominal $10 set up fee will be charged to set up for the day. All types of vendors (except food vendors) are being sought for over 100 available spaces; there’s plenty of room for everyone. Flea Market Vendors, Yard Sale Vendors, Antique Vendors, Craft Vendors, Collectibles Vendors, Business Vendors, and Farm Produce Vendors are invited to set up for the popular market; all spaces will allow vendors to park their vehicles right on the space and sell from their trailers, trucks, or cars. All food rights are reserved by the sponsoring organization. A food and drink stand will be operated by MCSI throughout the day; there will be plenty of parking for shoppers, and restroom facilities are available. Millerstown Community Success, Inc (MCSI) is the sponsor for the event. PCCA TO UNVEIL MURAL CELEBRATING THE SUSQUEHANNA RIVER AT MARYSVILLE BOROUGH POOL Perry County Council of the Arts will dedicate its latest Arts-in-Education mural in a celebration at the Marysville Borough Pool, 2 Park Drive in Marysville, on Saturday, June 9 at 1 p.m.
Following a brief ceremony, the Marysville Borough Pool will offer four free hours of swimming to anyone that attends the unveiling ceremony. Visit the PCCA Facebook page for more details on the event. Created through PCCA’s Arts in Education program, a partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, this mural is the first of its kind for PCCA. With this project, the Arts in Education program has begun what it intends to be an ongoing focus on the ecological attributes that make up Perry County’s beautiful, rural landscape. With an eye towards conservation and education, PCCA hopes to use the arts as a way to inform our young people to the importance of preserving our natural resources. Erika Juran, Executive Director of Perry County Council of the Arts states, “Our newest mural of the Perry County Historical Mural Trail brings a new twist to the Trail and added environmental education to our local schools. This residency project honors the richness and depth of both our natural resources and our local history, two assets of Perry County. Our organization already focuses on using recycled materials in its programming for Drop-In Art and other residencies.” Titled “Susquenita Supports the Susquehanna”, this mural is a co-creation between Susquenita Elementary School, Susquenita Middle School, and artist in residence Kuen Kuen Liu Spichiger of Halifax. Additionally, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association talked with students from both schools about the history, health, and environmental importance of the Susquehanna River. This project engaged almost 900 students between the two schools, and was supported by elementary art teacher Alison Binger-Seidle, elementary STEM teacher Sarah Baer, and middle school art teacher Abby Fisher, as well as support from school staff and administration. The mural depicts six different fishes that are native to the Susquehanna River: brook trout, tiger muskellunge, walleye, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, and American eel. The fish were designed and painted by the elementary school students. Additionally, the bor-
der of the mural was designed by the middle school and includes themes of environmental conservation. The mural will be permanently displayed at the Marysville Borough Pool. PCCA thanks the generous financial supporters of this mural project —Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Sheetz, Blick Art Supplies, Mutzabaugh’s Market, Hometown Mortgage Resources, Nancy’s Soft Pretzels and the Marysville Sportsmen’s Association.
