SATURDAY MARCH, 2nd -THE ANNUAL PINOCHLE CARD PARTY sponsored by the Millerstown Lions Club in Millerstown. The event will be held at the Greenwood Elementary School just off Route 17 East in Millerstown Borough, Perry County, Doors will open at 5 p.m. and the party will begin at 6 p.m. sharp. This annual event has been held by the Millerstown Lions for many years and is recognized as one of the most popular events of its kind in the area. Prizes generously donated by local businesses will be awarded to the lucky winners and nearly everyone is guaranteed a prize. In addition to the prizes given out, there is usually an auction of different items so players should come prepared to find some bargains during the auction. Profits from the annual event benefits Lions District 14T projects including sight, diabetes, Beacon Lodge, Leader Dog and many others. Cost of the party is only $8 per person, which includes refreshments. Local residents are invited to get out of the house after the long winter to enjoy a fun evening of cards, refreshments, and fellowship while helping the many projects that Lions Clubs support. “On the Trail of Perry County History” Bus Tour will be held on
Saturday, April 6, 2019. This year’s tour will include historic sites in and around Millerstown, Liverpool, and Pfoutz’s Valley including: Rope Ferry, the canal at Millerstown Park, Cochran-Anspach House, Liverpool cemetery and town square with more historic sites and subjects to be added. The all-inclusive cost for the tour is $35.00, which includes transportation on a motor-coach (not a school bus) and the mid-day meal in Liverpool. Registrations are due to The Perry Historians no later than March 16th. Seating is limited and will be filled using the postmark date on payment. Tentative Itinerary: 8:15 AM - Board the coach Newport Park-N-Ride at the intersection of Rte. 34 and Rte. 322. The bus will leave the parking lot promptly at 8:30 Return time 3:30-4:00.

Arts Council to Host A Novel Idea: Critique Workshop
Perry County Council of the Arts (PCCA) will host its popular workshop series for writers, A Novel Idea, from March to November 2019. This monthly workshop, held on first Saturdays in Newport, PA, will focus on critique of authors’ work in progress. Participants can share their work with classmates who will comment and critique plot, characterization, dialogue, setting, and any inconsistencies with grammar, point of view, or voice. This workshop series is right for those writing their first draft or polishing for publication. Participants will learn how to critique others, how to receive a critique, and how to see their piece with an editor’s eye. The series is led by Catherine Jordan, published author and editor, seasoned writer and teacher, and editor of the popular serialized novella now in book form as The Blue, The Gray, and the Red. Jordan urges, “Don’t think of this as a spelling or grammar class. Nor is it a competitive performance. We’re not here to point out mistakes. Critique is intended as a motivational support group for writers. The goal is to improve our skills as self-editors and writers, as well as provide sincere, constructive feedback to the author. You never get a second chance to explain to your readers. There’s no, ‘Well, what I really meant was...,’ or ‘What I was trying to say is...’ And that’s the value of a good critique.” Catherine Jordan is the author of the horror novels, Seeking Samiel, and The Bookseller’s Secret. She edits and writes in different genres, and is a contributor to TheBurg magazine. Catherine has been a judge for the Bram Stoker Award and for the ITW Young Adult Award. She also facilitates writing courses and critique groups. Jordan’s editing and stewarding of the popular Perry County Times serial novella project—now a Sunbury Press publication, PCCA’s The Blue, the Gray and the Red, continues to be a strong seller. PCCA collaborated with the students and faculty of its A Novel Idea program to bring an art form popular in the time of Charles Dickens to the readers of Perry County. Real places and events are woven together with fictional characters set in Perry County’s Civil War era, 1863. Its chapters were originally published in five installments as an insert in the Perry County Times newspaper beginning January 2018. Each section was written by a student author assisted by a mentor and includes historical pictures and artwork. The initial project was supported by the Robert H. and Beverly U. Fowler Foundation. Robert H. Fowler Sr. was a novelist of historical fiction, publisher of the Perry County Times, and the founder of Historical Times, Inc., a collection of special interest magazines that included Civil War Times, American History Illustrated, British History Illustrated, and Early American Life. This 132 pp. paperback includes new content including several forewords by local writers and historians involved with the project. PCCA Executive Director Erika Juran states, “PCCA is thrilled to continue to host this new version of our popular A Novel Idea workshop series, created to help build community and confidence for the new and seasoned writer.” “A Novel Idea: Critique” workshop series will be held at PCCA’s Landis House, 67 N. 4th Street in Newport, PA.
