CONCEALED CARRY SEMINAR SET FOR MAY 3 IN PERRY COUNTY NEW BLOOMFIELD – In an effort to better inform area gun owners regarding Pennsylvania’s firearms laws, Trinity Law is sponsoring a Concealed Carry Seminar on Thursday, May 3, in Perry County. The free event will be co-hosted by Rep. Mark Keller (R-Perry/Cumberland) and Sen. John DiSanto (R15). The seminar will be held at the Shermans Dale Community Fire Company, 5450 Spring Road in Shermans Dale, starting at 6:30 p.m.

Speakers will provide information on how to safely interact with police when carrying a firearm and detail the legal aspects of the Castle Doctrine, which allows a homeowner to use deadly force if necessary when threatened by an armed intruder. Presentations will be made

by Attorney Matt Menges of Trinity Law, a well-known expert on state gun laws, along with Perry County District Attorney Andy Bender, Perry County Sheriff Steve Hile and representatives from the Pennsylvania State Police.

ICKESBURG BI-CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION July 24th -29th. Who’d ever think that in this day and age, kids and adults would be encouraged to start practicing their spitting techniques! Prizes are to be awarded for doing just that during the Ickesburg Bi-Centennial Celebration, July 24-29. The hard working bi-centennial committee is bringing back some of the fun things in life to help commemorate “ Days Gone By “! And, as in past celebrations, gents will be fined, charged a fee for not sporting facial hair. But, there are prizes to be had for those who grow mustaches and beards, to be judged during the week long festivities. Kids start practicing hopping for the “ sack races “. And, ladies pick out a pattern for a period costume to sew for modeling or dancing throughout the week. If looking to volunteer to help during the celebration, you might want to sign up for the pie judging contest! Better yet, help make the ice cream the week before, and get to taste test the home made treat! Get the family and friends together for a float or marching group for the parade on July 28 at 10 am.

Floats should be centered around the theme “ Days Gone By “. Wonder who’ll be featuring an outhouse? Prizes will be awarded in various categories. New to the carnival this year, which runs in conjunction with the bi-centennial celebration, will be “ inflatables” for the kids enjoyment. Also, the committee is planning Olde’ Time Games. Remembering Perry County servicemen will play a major role in the celebration, as the committee hosts the AVTT , American Veterans Traveling Tribute, of Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall. Special ceremonies honoring Perry County servicemen will be held July 2728, ending with a special Church Service Sunday July 29. The Wall will be open to the public 24 hours day till removal on the 29th. To honor the forefathers of Ickesburg and Saville Township, a short “ History Lesson “ will be given at the start of each evenings entertainment!

GREENVALLEY CAMPGROUND & GROCERY CELEBRATES 40 YEARS OF CAMPING FUN FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY

Michael Mastrachio was born and raised in Sayre, PA. He attended Penn State in Wilkes Barre and then transferred to Penn State Middletown where he graduated with a 4.0 average in business with a minor in accounting.

Mike & Brenda Mike had an entrepreneur (notice the rabbit ears) spirit and was looking for a business opportunity. Opportunity knocked when he came to Perry County to visit and party with friends who happened to live next door to Green Valley Campground where Mike met than owner Charles H. Fortney, and struck up a friendship. In 1978 Charles decided he wanted to sell to get ready for retirement and Mike was ready to buy a business that he saw had great potential.

1978 was a year of change for Michael he not only bought a business in June, in October he married his Perry County born and raised sweetheart, Brenda Showers.

Brenda was a well known hairdresser in the area at the time and so the Mastrachio Green Valley journey began.

Mike expanded the business by opening up an electronic section and also rented videos when that was the popular thing to do in the 80’s and 90’s. Brenda said Mike was such a good sales person that someone would come in for a gallon of milk and walk out with a TV, VCR, rented movies and snacks to go along with it all. He was always introducing new items to sell to keep things fresh. He use to say, “If I don’t have it, you don’t need it.”

In 1980 Mike and Brenda had their first born child Carmon followed by daughter Alicia in 1982. Brenda then started working at the store so she could be home with Carmon and Alicia. Family was always very important to Mike and Brenda and they were thankful to

be in a situation where they could have their kids around them all the time and also have the freedom to attend all their many school activities. Both children graduated with honors and Carmon was Class Valedictorian which brought tears to Mike’s eyes (the first time Brenda saw Mike cry). Alicia excelled in sports and academics as well and Mike and Brenda were very proud of their many accomplishments.

Mike was known as the area “angel” when someone came to him with a need he would help them out when no one else would help. His younger brother Louis bought an area liquor license and Mike let him open his restaurant, Mastrachio’s in the lower area of Green Valley Grocery which is still there and is an excellent restaurant in Perry County and it is convenient for Green Valley campers. Mike and Brenda have made many loyal friends over the years and campers come back year after year ot relax along the beautiful Juniata River.

tack and passed on, it was a very rough time for Brenda, Carmon, and Alicia but they worked together to keep the family business going and their campers and clients stayed loyal and helped Brenda thrive as she took over running the business that Mike had established.

In 2005 Alicia married her knight in shining armor, Brian Imler. Brian has been a blessing to Brenda and the family. Alicia and Brian had twins in 2009, Sophia and Christopher. Alicia asked her mom to watch them because she wanted her kids to experience the same freedom of growing up along the river that she and Carmon experienced. In 2014 they were blessed with another son Grant and blessing Brenda even more. Her grand babies are her joy and she is thankful that owning her own business allows her to spend so much time with them.

Brenda has always been a “people person” and enjoys meeting all the people from all areas of the Unit-

ed States and beyond who come to spend their time at Green Valley Campground. She has met campers from China, England, Belgium and Japan. She doesn’t know how they come to find Green Valley but she’s thankful that they do come. Green Valley is not a big campground but it is very family oriented. They don’t have special events or entertainment but they do have beautiful scenery and the “Best Bass fishing on the East Coast” and a peaceful environment. 35 sites are available from April to mid-October offering nightly, weekly, monthly and seasonal camping. The cost for a site is $35 for tents and $45 or Campers with water and electric. Green Valley Campground does having a dumping station also the store is open year round with some camping essentials, snacks, goodies and subs. On Labor Day Brenda host a Customer Appreciation event for all her loyal campers and patrons.

Brenda is very thankful to God, her parents, her children and all of her many patrons and loyal campers and customers who continue to support Green Valley Campground. As she was reminiscing and looking back at the past forty years of her life at Green Valley Campground Brenda said continually that she is truly blessed and wouldn’t change a thing. “I wouldn’t have it any other way, it’s been my life and it’s still my life. Maybe you’d include some links to news articles praising your accomplishments. Or maybe you’d just show up on the first day of classes and declare, “Here I am!” How do you think that would work out?
