Community Calendar

EVENT: SUPER Bingo to Benefit Millerstown Lions. The Millerstown Lions Club is sponsoring Super Bingo on Sunday, November 4 at 1 p.m at the Millerstown Moose Lodge in Millerstown across from the Millerstown Community Park on West Juniata Parkway.

Doors open at 12 noon with food purchase available.

There will be 20 cash games, raffles & more. Advance tickets are $20 but at the door, they will be $25. Tickets will be available from any Millerstown Lions Club member or at Bratton Insurance, Stitch in Time and Juniata Valley Bank in Millerstown. EVENT: The 4th Annual Fall Festival & Craft Bazaar will be held on Saturday, November 10th from 9 am to 2 pm at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1000 N. Front St., Liverpool. November 17 is the day when all roads lead to Greenwood Elementary School in Millerstown Borough where at least 100 vendors from throughout Central Pennsylvania and beyond will set up shop for the day to delight shoppers of all ages find the perfect gift for everyone on their holiday shopping list. Whether it’s pottery, ceramics, jewelry, wooden items or candy, visitors will find

the unique gift at great prices. The event will be held from 7:45 a.m. until 2 p.m. There is always a great selection throughout the day as vendors are always well stocked right up until the end of the show. This marks the 32nd year for the popular Craft show and visitors won’t be disappointed with the selection of vendors at this year’s event. Many of the old time favorites are back, but many new vendors have joined the mix. Greenwood High School’s popular musical group, “Out of the Blue” will perform their holiday show on the stage in the large group instruction area at 10 a.m. The sponsors, Millerstown Community Success, Inc. (MCSI), will sell delicious food items throughout the day. Visitors may enjoy both breakfast and lunch while shopping and visiting with their friends. The craft show is always held the Saturday before Thanksgiving and provides local citizens an opportunity to shop at home to find that perfect gift for everyone. EVENT: Dec. 17th-23rd - The Little Buffalo Christmas Trail – The Christmas Trail is brought to you by Little Buffalo State Park in conjunction with The Friends of Little Buffalo. Kids can meet Santa and enjoy the thousands of lights and holiday displays located along this quarter mile trail in the park’s East Picnic Area. A Quick, Tasty Weeknight Meal

Preparing weeknight meals can be tricky, as busy men and women may want to save money and cook their own healthy foods but have little time to do so consistently.

But healthy, homecooked meals need not take much time to prepare. The following low-calorie recipe for “Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes” from “Weightwatchers: Cook It Fast” (St. Martin’s Griffin) can be whipped up in 20 minutes, making it an ideal meal for time-strapped men and women who want homecooked meals without all the work that goes into more complex recipes.

Crab Salad-Stuffed Tomatoes Serves 2 1⁄3 cup orzo / 2 large tomatoes / 1 cup crabmeat, picked over for pieces of shell / 1⁄3 cup chopped black or green olives / 2 tablespoons crumbled reduced-fat feta cheese 2 tablespoons chopped fresh dill / 2 teaspoons balsamic vinegar / 1⁄8 teaspoon salt 1⁄8 teaspoon black pepper 1. Cook orzo according to package directions, omitting salt if desired. Drain and rinse under cold water; drain again.

2. Meanwhile, cut thin slice off tops of tomatoes; reserve tops. Using spoon, carefully scoop out seeds and pulp; reserve for another use.

3. Gently toss together crabmeat, olives, feta, dill, vinegar, salt, and pepper in medium bowl. Spoon crabmeat mixture evenly into tomato shells and cover with reserved tomato tops.

Cook’s note: Scoop the seeds and pulp from the tomatoes into a storage container.

Cover and freeze up to 4 months and toss them into a soup or stew.

Fall for Hummingbirds Contest Attract Migrating Hummingbirds To Your Feeders For A Chance At Prizes.

Hummingbirds are being found with increasing frequency in the fall & winter seasons in Pennsylvania. About 99% of the hummingbirds that are found east of the Mississippi are Ruby-throated Hummingbirds, but sometimes during fall and winter other species of hummingbirds pass through Pennsylvania as the travel from breeding grounds in Alaska to wintering spots along the Gulf Coast. Ornithologists are very interested in learning more about these wayward little birds. Your participation can help contribute to the growing body of information about migrating hummingbirds. If you are able to get a confirmed hummingbird to visit your feeders, you can win a prize. In addition, researchers with federal banding permits would like to band the late season hummingbirds, if the homeowners are willing.

NOTE: Maintain a clean feeder whenever you leave it out for birds. It is recommended that you clean the feeder at least weekly, more often if the sugar mixture gets cloudy. The mixture for the feeders should always be 4 parts water to 1 part sugar. No additives or dyes are ever needed. If temperatures drop below freezing, bring the feeders in overnight. It is a myth that keeping feeders up will prevent them from migrating in the fall. They will come and go as they please. We are only helping them fuel up in their journey.

The men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories.

Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service.

November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries, and that each falls on November 11 is no coincidence, as the day commemorates the anniversary of the end of World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918.

Many places around the world pause and remember fallen veterans on November 11, but a good majority of Veterans Day and Remembrance Day commemorative events focus on past and current veterans who are still alive. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. · When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant. · Attend a military parade with your family and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance. · Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home. · Ask your company if Veterans Day or Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women. · Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. · Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. · Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. · Volunteer time at a veterans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. · Get involved with a military support charity that can provide much-needed funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. · Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. · Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of honor at a special function.
