PCCA Announces the Perry County Historical Mural Trail Perry County Council of the Arts will soon dedicate its latest Arts-in-Education murals in Millerstown and New Bloomfield. Created through PCCA’s Arts-in-Residency program as partners of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, these historical murals were designed by a teaching artist and school students to highlight the proud histories of New Bloomfield and Millerstown. New Bloomfield’s mural, administered through PCCA, is a co-creation of a West Perry Middle School art class and PCCA rostered artist in residence Jon Laidacker, with the support of art teacher Molly Knisely and school staff and administration. PCCA thanks the generous sponsors of the project, the “Friends of the New Bloomfield Mural,” Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, guest historians New Bloomfield Mayor Arlis J. Krammes and Glenn Holliman. Millerstown’s mural focuses on the legacy of its role as the oldest incorporated town in the county, and visually displays the different modes of transportation as the county’s “crossroads.” The project was a partnership between PCCA, Jon Laidacker, local historian David Patton, and Greenwood High School students, with the support of art teacher Jill Deimler, school staff, and administration. Hundreds of community members helped paint the mural in progress at PCCA’s 2018 Perry County Youth Art Day. PCCA Executive Director Erika Juran says, “These newest murals of the Perry County Historical Mural Trail bring local history, education and pride to our local schools. This residency project honors the richness and depth of our local history—one of the assets of Perry County. We thank our participating students and historians, local donors, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Jon Laidacker, and the New Bloomfield and Millerstown communities for their combined overwhelming support.” In June, PCCA dedicated its Marysville mural, “Susquenita Supports the Susquehanna,” at the Borough
pool. This mural, which focuses on historic and current fish of the Susquehanna River, is a co-creation between PCCA, The Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association, Susquenita Elementary School, Susquenita Middle School, and PCCA teaching artist in residence Kuen Kuen Liu Spichiger of Halifax. Additionally, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association talked with students from both schools about the history, health, and environmental importance of the Susquehanna River. This project engaged almost 900 students between the two schools. PCCA has administered a number of painted murals highlighting local history. Eight of these murals are referred to as the Perry County Historical Mural Trail. The Newport Canal Mural mounted on the square in Newport in 2012, created by muralist Biruta Hansen inspired the idea for a trail of historical murals throughout Perry County. The seven subsequent historical murals were administered as part of the PCCA’s Arts in Education program, and were created in community. PCCA’s Arts in Education program, a partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, supports community art projects in 7 rural counties as arts in residence projects of 10 days or greater, to take place in schools, community and senior centers, and correctional facilities. ccording to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, agriculture is among the most hazardous industries. Fatal and nonfatal injuries pose a significant threat to farmers, including the many young people who work on farms. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, in an effort to promote productive and safe workplaces, supports programs that conduct research on injuries associated with agriculture as well as pesticide exposure, pulmonary disease, musculoskeletal disorders, hearing loss, and stress. Studying the results of such research, compiled by NIOSH, may compel veteran and novice farmers to further emphasize safety measures and promote practices that can reduce risk for accidents on the farm. Estimates indicate that there were roughly 2.1 million full-time workers employed in production agriculture in 2017 and between 1.4 and 2.1 million hired crop workers employed annually on crop farms in the United States. Each day, roughly 100 agricultural workers suffer injuries that cause them to miss time at work. In 2014, 12,000 youth were injured on farms, and 4,000 of those youths could trace their injuries to farm work. In 2016, 417 farmers and farm workers died from work-related injuries. Tractor overturns and other transportation incidents were the leading cause of death for these farmers and farm workers. THANK YOU TO ALL THE FARMERS WHO WORK SO HARD! 22

PCCA’s Quilt Mural Trail, soon to expand into 3 counties, is a result of arts in residence and community-created painted quilts, and the designs are based upon learnings of local history. Other arts in residence murals besides the 2018 additions include: the 2015 Susquenita High School mural, installed at Blue Mountain Outfitters in Marysville, the 2015 Greenwood High School mural installed at the school, the 2016 West Perry High School mural, installed at the school, and the 2017 Newport Veterans Mural by Newport High School, installed by the bridge in Newport. These murals were projects of PCCA’s rostered teaching artist Jon Laidacker. PCCA’s rostered teaching artists must go through an application process and regular observation period, along with ongoing coaching and professional development. Applications for rostered teaching artists are encouraged, and information can be found at perrycountyarts.org/artist-in-residency-program/. Questions may be directed to aie@perrycountyarts.org. PCCA Arts in Education Coordinator Mycenea Worley says, “These murals represent so much more than the history of our area. They are a testament to the spirit of community. I’m especially thrilled that Jon, a native of our service area, is able to share his expertise with our students.”

God went to a great deal of trouble to set up a process for admission, and He made sure to leave clear instructions. The good news is that admission isn’t restricted to perfect people! Whether you’ve messed up a little or a lot, your slate can be wiped clean, and you can be made new from the inside out. Sadly, failing to meet God’s requirement renders even your good deeds as worthless as that song and dance routine.
