Community Calendar

THE 166TH JUNIATA COUNTY FAIR will continue this year in a modified format. The dates of the Fair are Saturday, September 5, 2020 through Saturday, September 12, 2020. As in years past the Fair will have music, entertainment, races, animals, and food. This year, unfortunately, the directors have decided to close the Commercial Building and the Floral Halls. There will be no inside vendors or premium entries. Livestock entries will be open to persons who entered livestock in 2019 or any first year youth. LITTLE BUFFALO STATE PARK EVENTS: Shoaff’s Mill is open for tours! – Saturdays & Sundays – 1pm-3pm Shoaff’s Mill is a 19th century operational grist mill that is open for tours every Saturday & Sunday from May through the Apple Festival in October. Originally built around 1840 to serve the Juniata iron furnace community, this mill provided the surrounding region with cornmeal, flour, and various animal feeds. Come and see the 32 foot Fitz waterwheel turn as it has for over 100 years and check out a variety of milling tools and machinery.

Social distancing will be practiced for all programs, including Mill Tours. This means we will be limiting the amount

of people inside the Mill at once. We also ask that patrons bring masks, as they must be worn if entering the Mill or when in close proximity to other park patrons.

Photography Walk – Thursday, Sept. 3rd - 6-7pm Meet us at Shoaff’s Mill in the East Area of the park for a photography walk! We will learn the basics of nature photography, how to responsibly photograph wildlife, and practice our new skills. Cameras will NOT be provided.

All cameras welcome, even cell phones! We will be hiking the Mill Race Trail, which is an easy, ¼ mile walk.

Comfortable hiking shoes are recommended. All ages and skill levels are welcome! Participants must bring facial coverings and wear when in close proximity to staff or other visitors. Please register by visiting the DCNR Calendar of events - https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/little_buffalo_state_park Fossil Hunt Fri, Sept. 4th 10am-11am & 2pm-3pm Join us for a fossil hunt at the campground. We will be learning what types of fossils you can find in PA and how old they can be. We will meet at the campground wood shed on Black Hill Road at the start of each program.

Please park in the parking lots either behind the wood shed (extra car lot) or across from the wood shed (below the rec hall). We will walk to the site together! Please register for only one time slot and bring facial coverings for when social distancing is not possible. Register on the DCNR Calendar of Events - https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/little_buffalo_state_park Nocturnal Animals – Friday, Sept. 4th – 8:00pm Crawl into the night with us in the East Area of the park as we discuss the awesome adaptations that different animals have! We will discuss some nocturnal adaptations and then go for a short hike to look and listen for nocturnal creatures. Flashlights are recommended for the night hike portion. You must register for this program – space is limited. Register on the DCNR Calendar of Events - https:// events.dcnr.pa.gov/little_buffalo_state_park Attracting Pollinators – Sat., Sept. 5th - 10am-11am Come out to the butterfly garden to learn the basics of creating a butterfly garden as well as the benefits of choosing native plants. We will be discussing the common butterflies of Little Buffalo and how to improve your garden for pollinators and if we’re lucky get to see some monarch caterpillars! Please have masks with you for all programs and practice social distancing. This is a “come anytime during this hour” program, but space is limited and those

Pennsylvania Furbearers – Sat., Sept. 5th – 5pm-6pm Come to Boyd Big Tree Preserve in Dauphin to learn about Pennsylvania’s many furbearing species, from foxes to fishers to bears! We will have a table set up at the pavilion where you can check out (but not touch) some of the furs of native PA mammals and learn about the history of trapping and the importance of conservation of these species.

Please have facial coverings for if social distancing can not be maintained. Come anytime during this hour.

Deer & Elk of Pennsylvania – Sat., Sept. 5th – 6-7pm Come to the campground and learn about white-tailed deer and elk in Pennsylvania. We will be discussing deer biology, aging, scoring antlers, and past and present conservation in the state. This is a limited space program and precedence will be given to those who register. To register, visit the DCNR Calendar of events - https://events.dcnr.pa.gov/little_buffalo_state_park . Please have masks with you if you are attending. We will be located near the bath house.

Buffalo Ridge Hike – Sunday, Sept. 6th – 9am-10:30am Join the park naturalist for a morning hike along the Buffalo Ridge Trail. This is a moderate hike that is not a loop, running about a mile from the East end of the park to the West day use. We will then walk across the west day use area and come back the Fisherman’s Trail, which is about a ½ mile easy walk back to the East Area. We will meet at the stage in the East area of the park. Despite Heritage Days being cancelled, we WILL be boiling the second AND third weeks in October at the Lenig Focht Library and we WILL have apple butter and cider available for curbside pickup at the library October 8th, 9th & 10th and again on October 14th, 15th & 16th as well as at Little Buffalo State Park on October 17th & 18th, near the stage area at the eastern end of the park.

PERRY COUNTY STUDENTS AWARDED AT YOUTH ART DAY In a response to the ongoing pandemic, Perry County Council of the Arts (PCCA) is hosting its annual Youth Art Day student art showcase online at www.perrycountyarts.org. The online art show honors Perry County’s talented youth, and showcases the exemplary art and creativity of more than 300 students who were awarded ribbons in visual art and literature. Visitors can view slideshows containing photographs of each visual art entry that received either a 1st, 2nd or 3rd place ribbon, as well as view the awarded literature entries.

Isabel Owens, a graduating senior from Newport High School, earned the highest visual art honor of “Best in Show” and a $250 prize for her functional pottery piece “Thrown Together,” out of a total of 747 visual art entries. Newport High School will display the “Best in Show” trophy until next year’s event.

Unfortunately, this year’s event, originally scheduled for Saturday, April 4 at Susquenita High School, had to be cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Show Your Bloomers” Contest Winners Millerstown Community Success, Inc. ran its second year contest in Millerstown Borough to encourage the citizens to participate and work together to make Millerstown more colorful and attractive this summer. The contest was called “Show Your Bloomers” and the contest was very successful. Flowers and plants were everywhere, and judges evaluated and assigned the awards for each of the categories that the committee had planned.--Prettiest Porch, Container Garden (Pots), Yards and Gardens, Window Boxes, , Businesses, Churches, Patriotic Theme, and Unique and Unusual .
