Annual Irvington Homecoming By Tina Suarez The Annual Irvington Homecoming was held on Saturday, June 29 at the city park. Event Chairmen were Todd Schaefer and Doug Gibson. There were many things for the whole family to enjoy. There was laser tag for the kids, crafts for moms and a great car show for dads. The event also hosts an annual BBQ cook-off contest. People got to enjoy great BBQ prepared by great grill masters. In addition, a local band performed to provide entertainment in the afternoon. People that came enjoyed an array of great food such as pork chop sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches, nachos, hot dogs, hamburgers, ribbon fries, lemon shakeups, homemade ice cream and popcorn. Fireworks were displayed at dusk for everyone to enjoy. This is a great annual event. If you did not get to come this year you missed out on a great time. There is time to plan to come to next year’s event. See Homecoming, page 2

When youʼre having a bad day, what do you do to make yourself feel better? I play my music and start singing along to my favorite songs.

The Southern Illinois Networking Association met on July 11 at the C entralia Recreation Complex. President Mike Chambers began the meeting with both a prayer and the pledge. Everyone in attendance spoke about things that are happening in the community. The Central City Lions Fest will be on July 19 and 20 at the Central City Lions Park. President Chambers introduced Curt Lackey as the featured speaker for the day. He discussed numerous issues that Illinoisans are facing now and others that will follow. Lackey spoke on the 21 tax and fee hikes totaling $4.7 billion coming soon

for Illinoisans. In total, 21 new ways to extract money estimated to raise $4.7 billion to pay for infrastructure and the state’s fiscal 2020 operating budget, which despite the new money may still be as much as $1.3 billion in the red. The changes span three different bills — SB690, SB689 and SB1939 — and total 2,029 pages. All three bills were passed in a single weekend, meaning neither taxpayers nor lawmakers had time to fully read them. Governor J.B. Pritzker signed SB689 on June 5 and is expected to sign the remaining two bills. The biggest tax hike proposed by Pritzker — scrapping Illinois’ constitutionally guaranteed flat tax and re-

placing it with a progressive income tax — would require voter approval on the November 2020 ballot to be enacted. Senate Democrats have estimated the rates signed by the governor would raise just over $3 billion. While Pritzker has claimed his progressive tax plan would lower or at least not raise taxes on 97% of Illinoisans, just two of the revenue changes enacted this spring — doubling the motor fuel tax and increasing vehicle registration fees — more than wipe out any tax relief the governor promised. Rotarians learn facts about signers of Declaration of Independence At the C entralia Rotary Club meeting on July 7 Rotarian Jim Shain spoke on the founding fathers and how our country was formed. Jim began with some facts about Independence Day that he found in the 2019 Old Farmer’s Almanac, sharing that the Declaration of Independence was not officially signed on July 4, 1776. The Second Continental Congress actually made its decree for freedom on July 2 (the resolution was passed unanimously), then two days later C ong re ss for m a l ly adopted the Declaration of Independence and they then rang the Liberty Bell to announce the resolution. However, it wasn’t until August 1776 that the document was signed and made official. John Adams predicted that we would celebrate the adoption of the Declaration of Independence with “pomp, shows, games, spots, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of the continent to the other, from this time forward and forever.” Jim then read part of the Declaration and shared some facts about the men who signed it

and what happened to them because they did so. It was a very brave and dangerous thing to do. These facts were gathered by Jim’s pastor, Steve Upchurch, who spoke about them in his July 7, 2019 sermon. Declaration of Independence Facts by Pastor Steve Upchurch There were 56 men that signed the Declaration of Independence. When they signed their names to that document a lot of them signed their own death warrant and/or the death warrants of their children. Here is what happened to these men: 1. Five signers were captured by the British as traitors and tortured before they died. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army, another had two sons captured. Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships in the Revolutionary War. They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. 2. Twenty-four were lawyers. Eleven were merchants, nine were

farmers and large plantation owners — men of wealth and well educated. But they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured. 3. Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts and died in poverty. 4. Thomas McKean was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him and he also died in poverty. 5. Vandals and soldiers looted the properties of Ellery, Clymer, Hall, Wa lton , Gw i n ne tt , Heyward, Rutledge, and Middleton. 6. At the Battle of Yorktown, the British General Cornwallis had taken over the home of Thomas Nelson and was using it for his headquarters. Nelson quietly urged General George Washington to open fire on his home knowing it would be destroyed and Nelson died bankrupt.

7. Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The British armies jailed his wife and she died in jail in a few months. 8. John Hart was driven from his wife’s bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his mill were laid to waste. For more than a year, he lived in forests and caves returning to home only to find his wife dead and his children vanished. A few weeks later he died from exhaustion and a broken h e ar t . Nor r i s an d Livingston suffered similar fates. Such were the sacrifices of the Signers of the Declaration of Independence. These were not wild-eyed troublemakers. They were soft-spoken men of means and education. They had security, but they valued liberty more. Standing straight, tall and unwavering, here was their pledge: “For the support of this declaration, with firm reliance on the protection of the divine providence, we mutually pledge to each other, our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor.”

The Health and Wellness Fun Fest will feature an interactive Expo where exhibitors will share resources, information, and do demonstrations and activities such as make-yourown edible fruit sculpture and a healthy snack craft. Also, 30-minute mini seminars and workshops will be offered on topics such as healthy eating, proper use of workout machinery, reflexology, and fire safety. “There will be something that appeals to everyone’s interests at this health and wellness fun fair. Not only will folks get a lot of good information, they’ll get a chance to experience the fun of wellness through all of the activities,” stated Sonya Germann, Director of the Centralia Recreation Complex. The four students participating this summer are studying pre-medicine, pre-physician assistant, pre-pharmacy, and social work. They gain experience in rural health by working with a preceptor who matches their area of interest and learning about various aspects of primary care (e.g., chronic disease prevention, behavioral health, emergency medicine, social services and more). Cross Country Camp

The Kaskaskia College Athletic Department will hold a Cross Country Camp for students in grades 4-12 from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. at the KC main campus July 31 and August 1 and 2. The cost to attend is $35.00 and all campers will receive a t-shirt. The camp will include the basics of training, the importance of team, proper diet, mental preparation, race preparation, proper warmups, proper running mechanics, proper shoes and core routines. On August 3, a 5K Race will be held on the KC Campus. This race is open

to the public for an entry fee of $25.00. The cost of this race to the campers is included in the camp fee. The camp will be instructed by Kaskaskia College's head cross country coach Mike Hargis. The Kaskaskia College Cross Country Program will be hosting the 2nd Annual KC Blue Classic Alumni and Friends 5K Run on Saturday, August 3, 2019. Start time for the race will be 8:00 a.m. with a Fun Run starting at 9:00 a.m. The event will be held on the KC Campus. Registration fees for both races are $25.00 if paid before race

Sandoval back to school bash

The Back to School Bash is a community event. This event is sponsored by area churches, schools, businesses, the Village officials and the Shalom Program. The program will be on Sunday, August 4 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Sandoval United Methodist Church. This is a free event for all children registered at Sandoval Schools in K–12th grade. Transportation to the event will be provided if needed. Come and get everything the children will need for back-to-school. There will also be food and fun for everyone. There will be clothes, shoes, school supplies and haircuts that day. Shop for free. After you shop with the

children, stay and play on bounce houses. Hot dogs, potato chips and popsicles will be provided. Another program being done to help the children in the Village of Sandoval is “Sunday Undies.” Event organizers are asking everyone for donations of new socks or underwear. Again, this program is for students in K–12th grade at Sandoval Schools. If your last name begins with A-M, please buy small to medium sizes. If your name begins with N-Z, please buy sizes large and XL. All donations are greatly appreciated. If you would like to make a cash donation, please call Carole Jourdan at 247-3635. Do You Have Hope? Do you have hope? Awhile back I stopped at a McDonald’s to grab an icetea. While standing in line, I overheard a conversation between a young lady in line in front of me and the young man at the cash register. The lady said, somewhat proudly, “I’m an atheist.” Then, rather condescending, she said, “Do you know what an atheist is?” “Yes,” replied the young man, “an atheist is a person without hope.” What a great answer, I thought. A person without God and who has no belief in Jesus Christ is without hope. “If, in this life only, we have hope, we are of all men most miserable,” said the apostle Paul. (I Corinthians 15:17-19) What is hope? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines hope as, “1) Trust, reliance; 2) desire accompanied by expectation of fulfillment; also, something hoped for; 3) one that gives promise for the future.” I define hope as the confident expectation of the goodness of God. The young lady at McDonald’s said she was an atheist. What causes someone not to believe there is a God? For some it

is encountering a great tragedy or a great injustice in life. For others, it could be a denial of having to stand before a holy God and give account for wickedness and sin. But just claiming there is no God doesn’t make it so. And as the cashier at McDonald’s said so perceptively, “An atheist is a person without hope.” Paul says that an honest look at creation points men to a Creator. (Romans 1:20-21) A look at creation should bring one to the conclusion that there is a Grand Designer. Do you need hope? Put your trust in the God who willingly died for you and arose again from the dead, victorious over death, hell, and the grave. I read this Facebook post recently, “The devil couldn’t take you out so he’s trying to wear you out. Don’t you dare get tired. Hold on because the tide is turning.” (From “We Believe in God”) The prophet Jeremiah gave us this message of hope from God. “’For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,’ says the Lord, ‘Thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and go and pray to me, and I will listen for the flesh, but through ... s e r ve on e an ot h e r.” Friendship, Honesty, Love, Hope 3. From 2 Corinthians 3:17, “Now the Lord is that Spirit: and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is ... .” Hope, Freedom, Love, Liberty 4. In John 8:36, “If the ... therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” H e a r t , Wo r s h i p , Celebration, Son 5. From what book’s 6:7

Do you have hope? Look to Jesus the Messiah. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1) Think about some of the key words in this verse: justified by faith; peace with God; Jesus Christ; grace; rejoice in hope. Paul summed up the driving force of life with these words, “And now abides faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (I Corinthians 13:13) Perfect love casts out all fear. Isaac Watts wrote in his great hymn “The Solid Rock” the following, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” As the cashier at McDonald’s said, “An atheist is a person without hope.” Believe in God and live in hope. Summer Boating Safety Starts With Wearing Life Jackets

During the Independence Day holiday weekend and throughout the busy summer boating season, Illinois Conservation Police remind boat operators and passengers to stay sober and wear life jackets while on the water. “The last week in June was a particularly sad week for our officers,” said Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) Director of Law Enforcement Jerry Costello. “Illinois Conservation Police were called in to lead or assist in recovery for nearly ten water- and boat-related fatalities across the state. Heading into a holiday weekend, where we expect to see increased traffic on our lakes and rivers, these incidents provide a stark reminder of the importance of boating safely.” Boat operators should check to make sure watercraft have the correct number of personal floatation devices (PFDs) on board, said Costello, adding that Illinois law requires that properly-fitting U.S.

Coast Guard-approved PFDs — life jackets or life vests — be available for each person aboard a boat or other watercraft. State law also requires that anyone under the age of 13 must wear a life jacket while aboard any watercraft under 26 feet in length at all times the boat is underway, unless they are below deck in an enclosed cabin or operating on private property. Illinois law also requires persons of any age to wear a PFD while operating a personal watercraft or Jet Ski. Still, Costello said, life jackets aren’t the only consideration when reviewing boating safety. “Too many boating accidents and boating fatalities in Illinois involve boat operators who are impaired while driving their watercraft,” Costello said. “For your safety, the safety of family and friends on your boat, and the safety of other boaters, please stay sober behind the wheel. We want boaters on Illinois waterways to enjoy the holiday

this week, we just ask that they do it responsibly.” Illinois Conservation Police will be out in force during the Fourth of July holiday, making safety checks on watercraft throughout the state. With the added challenge of flooded waterways in many areas, Costello said boaters should pay close attention to potential dangers in the water as they navigate the state’s rivers and lakes. “ The 2019 boating season has been especially challenging because of the weather and flooding in Illinois,” Costello added. “When waterways are open, please be alert to potential dangers related to high water, including strong currents, floating debris, and submerged objects that could pose dangers to you and the passengers on your boat.” For more information on boating safety in Illinois, check the IDNR website at https://www.dnr.illinois. gov/safety/Pages/BoatingSafety.aspx

Grilled Burgers With A Twist I love summer for a lot of reasons, but one is I get to say to my husband — my better half — what's for dinner? It's chilling time for me but grilling time for him! And nothing's better on the grill than good old hamburgers, for parties as well as casual dinners. Personally, my favorite is grilled sirloin burgers topped with swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Below are a few new twists for burgers, perfect for a summer meal with sides of slaw or potato salad, sliced tomatoes and fresh fruit.

Soy Dipped Burgers 1/2 cup each soy sauce and water 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed 2 tsp. grated fresh ginger 2 T. Worcestershire 6 T. firmly packed brown sugar

3 lbs. lean ground beef 8 hamburger buns or French rolls, split and buttered Thinly sliced tomatoes Green bell pepper rings

In bowl, mix soy, water, garlic, ginger, Worcestershire, and sugar. Shape beef into 8 patties, each about 1 inch thick; place in large heavy-duty plastic bag. Pour soy marinade over patties in bag; seal bag securely and rotate to distribute marinade. Place in shallow baking pan. Refrigerate (or place in picnic cooler) for 1 to 2 hours. Lift patties from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place patties on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once and basting several times with marinade, until done to your liking; cut to test (about 10 minutes for medium-rare). When you turn patties, place buns, cut side down, around outside of grill to toast. Serve patties on buns, with tomatoes and bell pepper rings. Makes 8 servings.

Taco Burgers 1 can (about 1 lb.) refried beans 2 medium-size tomatoes, sliced 1 large ripe avocado, pitted, peeled, sliced, and tossed with 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 small onion, chopped

1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. Worcestershire 1/3 cup canned diced green chiles 3/4 tsp. ground cumin 6 corn tortillas Prepared taco sauce

Place beans in pan and heat through; keep warm. Place tomatoes and avocado in separate dishes. In bowl, combine beef, onion, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire, chiles, and cumin. Mix well, then shape into 6 rectangular patties, each about 3/8 inch thick. Place patties on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until browned and done to your liking; cut to test (4 to 6 minutes for medium-rare). To serve, heat tortillas on grill just until softened (15 to 20 seconds), turning often with tongs. Spread beans on tortilla; then place meat patty, tomatoes, and avocado slices on one side and drizzle with taco sauce. Fold other side of tortilla over meat and vegetables; eat out of hand. Makes 6 servings.

It seems that the Democratic Presidential candidates are split into thirds. 1) There’s the Joe Biden side, some calling for less change and getting some things done, attracting Democratic conservatives and moderates. 2) Then there’s the Elizabeth Warren side, calling for larger scale policies and taking chances, attracting some extreme left liberals. 3) Then there’s Bernie Sanders’ Political Revolution, calling for all to join him in his fight to change America to socialism. But all have one problem, that being Donald J. Trump! The four top Democrats to date in the running are Biden, Warren, Sanders and Kamala Harris. I have to admit, the more I get to know the new Democratic Party the less I like them. Please note I said new. My biggest issue, among others, is the cry for socialism and a socialist agenda, and what it would turn this country into. However, along with socialism, in my opinion, I believe illegal immigration will be another large concern in the 2020 elections, as it stands today. I realize a lot can happen before Nov. 3, 2020! And with that said, let’s move on to the “ICE raids”

(as some would say) that started last Sunday in 12 cities across the country. In my opinion, these aren’t raids. It’s called enforcing the law, targeting those individuals that have been ordered to leave the U.S. but refuse to go. Let me remind all that this same enforcement action took place under Barack Obama in 2012, minus, of course, the outcry from the bleeding hearts! And to top all this off, there’s the outcry for those held in detainment centers which I addressed in last week’s column. The biggest issue, again, is the great influx of illegals crossing our borders. Sunday morning on Meet the Press they showed pictures of one particular detainment center that’s been questioned. The pictures showed all men, no women or kids. It was also pointed out they got three hot meals a day from local restaurants. There were shower facilities available as well as more added, and their personal needs were being met. The biggest complaint by some detainees was they had been detained too long. Yet there are those still calling foul. But what they don’t tell you is we are still

in a catch and release mode. In recent polls, I will say they show most Americans want a system that’s fair and legal. The key word is legal. On to the Robert Mueller hearing scheduled for this week. It has been postponed until July 24, just more waste of time and money. So another hearing and then Congress leaves for a six-week summer vacation. (Oops, I mean recess so they can work on their re-election campaigns.) In my opinion, let them rip. It’s just another wonderful opportunity for Congress to humiliate themselves again! You gotta love it! On to another sports hero — in some eyes, not mine — Co-Captain of the U.S. National Soccer Team Megan Rapinoe, who took a knee to the National Anthem and showed total disrespect for our flag, on the field. This behavior will never be acceptable to me. There’s a time, place, and a way to protest. And while repre-

senting the U.S. on a U.S. team is not the right time, place, and way. I will note that during her un-American display, as the U.S. Flag hit the ground while the world was watching, one of her team members rescued it! She was the real hero! In closing this week, most of us are aware of and outraged by the decision of Illinois Governor Pritzker’s Administration to cancel the performance of the popular group Confederate Railroad at the DuQuoin State Fair because of their name. But, to make matters worse, Snoop Dogg has been booked to play at the Springfield State Fair. The same jerk that is shown on his 2017 album cover (which was pulled) with a body on a slab covered by the American flag. The body is identified by a toe tag as President Donald J. Trump. The album, “Make America Crip Again,” refers to gang violence, as do many of his albums. Needless to say, John and I won’t be attending either fair this year. This is way beyond acceptable. Gov. Pritzker responded to the backlash by saying the State is concerned about confederate imagery. As per Snoop Dogg and why he’s still performing at the State Fair in Springfield, JB said, “There’s an enormous difference between political satire and the discussion by a single artist and his political views.” Really? The good news, Confederate Railroad will play Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Black Diamond Harle y D av ids on in Marion. More on that later. Until next week.
