Shakes and Ladders Open House On December 7, Shakes and Ladders held its Christmas Open House. Santa and his Elf assistant (alias Jim and Melody Turner) were there to greet ever yone and take Christmas pictures with Santa. Jim and Melody are both Richview residents and village board members. They both are very active
in Richview. Everyone that came was treated to tasty Christmas treats to enjoy while they were shopping throughout the store. While shopping, everyone there was able to pick up unique holiday gifts for family, friends and coworkers. Shakes and Ladders is a home décor plus store. Delighting to do God’s Will

A true child of God delights to do God’s will. The psalmist David gave us a revelation of Messiah in this inspired prophecy, “ Then I said, ‘Behold, I come; in the scroll of the book it is written of me, I delight to do your will, O my God, and your law is within my heart.’” (Psalm 40:6-8) The writer of Hebrews tells us that this refers to Jesus Christ, our Lord. (Hebrews 10:5-10) Jesus delighted to do the will of his Heavenly Father. Do you attentively delight to do God’s will? The scriptures reveal

God’s sovereign plan for the ages. “But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.’” (Galatians 4:4) Redemption is God’s overriding plan for the ages. Jesus Christ is truly the reason for the season. Experience the delight and reward of knowing, surrendering to and doing God’s will. SEEK GOD’S WILL CONSTANTLY. Many make their plans and set their goals without ever seeking God’s will and purpose for their life. James admonishes

us, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and make a profit,’ whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.’” (James 4:13-17) Life on earth is short. No one has a guarantee of tomorrow. To make the most out of life and make it count for eternity and to the glory of God, seek to know and do God’s will. Praying, reading, and listening to God’s Word will enable you to know and do God’s will. David said, “Lord, your Word holds true. I trust every word you speak and every work of your hand. Help me to build my life upon you — my rock, my salvation, my God.” (Psalm 33:4 paraphrased) Jesus warned that only those who do the will of God will enter heaven. (Matthew 7:21) It’s not what you say but obedience to God’s will and Word that determines your eternal destiny. SURRENDER FULLY TO GOD’S WILL. The angel Gabriel appeared to the young virgin Mary and announced that she would conceive, by the Holy Spirit, and bring forth the Son of God. Even though she questioned how that could be, she replied, “Behold, the maid servant of the Lord. Let it be to me according to your Word.” (Luke 1:26-38) Mary was blessed and was used by God to bless the world by becoming the
mother of the Savior, because she surrendered to and delighted in the will and plan of God. Jesus constantly sought the Father’s will and fully surrendered to it. Before he went to the cross, he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane three times, “Father, if it is your will, take this cup away from me, nevertheless, not my will be done, but yours be done.” (Luke 22:4144) Are you committed to do God’s will, no matter the cost? It’s the place of blessing and great reward. S TA N D C O U R A GEOUSLY AND UNWAVERING IN GOD’S WILL. Doing God’s will will not always be the easiest place to be, but it is always the safest place to be. Psalm 91 is a promise for those who stand in God’s will, “He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” Don’t allow any devil or person to move you from God’s will. Sometimes you just have to stop worrying, wondering, and doubting. If you have committed your way to God, he will direct your path. (Psalm 37:1-7) Have faith that God will work things out. It may not be how you planned it, but it will be according to his will and purpose. (Romans 8:28) The great apostle of faith, Smith Wigglesworth, said, “If you seek nothing but the will of God, He will always put you in the right place at the right time.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cooking With Lizzie
Christmas Morning Brunch With Christmas almost here it's time to plan your Christmas morning brunch. Once the presents have been opened, it's time to sit back and enjoy family and friends. Some of my favorite old time standbys are below. Fix it all or just a little.
Ramp-and-Potato Egg Scramble 6 small (about 3/4 lb.) red potatoes 6 large eggs 1/3 cup water 1/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. ground black pepper 2 T. butter or margarine 1/2 cup chopped ramps (white bulbs and green tops)
In steamer or 4-quart saucepan with wire rack, steam potatoes over boiling water until just tender, about 30 minutes. Drain and cool potatoes until easy to handle. Cut potatoes into 3/4-inch chunks. In small bowl, beat eggs, water, salt, and pepper until blended. In 10-inch skillet, melt butter over medium heat. Add potatoes. Cook 3 to 5 minutes, until lightly browned, turning potatoes occasionally with pancake turner. Add ramps and cook a few seconds longer. Pour egg mixture into skillet. Stir from edge toward center of skillet until eggs begin to set. Cover and cook a few minutes longer, until eggs are just set. Makes 6 servings.
Beignets 1/2 cup milk 1 T. butter 1 package active dry yeast 1/4 cup sugar 1/2 cup warm water (105° to 115°F) 1 large egg
1/2 tsp. ground nutmeg 1/8 tsp. salt 4½ to 5 cups all-purpose flour About 1½ quarts vegetable oil, for frying 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
In 1-quart saucepan, heat milk until bubbles form around side of pan. Remove from heat; add butter and cool to warm. In large bowl, sprinkle yeast and sugar over water. Stir to dissolve; set aside until foamy, about 10 minutes. Add warm milk mixture, egg, nutmeg and salt to yeast mixture. Gradually beat in 3 cups flour until batter is smooth. Add enough remaining flour to make a manageable dough. Turn dough out onto floured surface. Knead, adding more flour if necessary, until dough is smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Lightly oil a large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning to bring oiled side up. Cover loosely with clean cloth. Let rise in warm place, away from drafts, until double in size, about 1 hour. Lightly oil large baking sheet. On lightly floured surface, roll dough to 15- by 10½inch rectangle, about 1/4 inch thick. Cut dough into 3½- by 3-inch rectangles. Place beignets on oiled baking sheet. Cover loosely with clean cloth and let rise again until double in size, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, in 4-quart saucepan, heat 2 inches of oil to 350°F on deep-fat thermometer. Fry beignets, a few at a time and turning often, until puffed and golden brown, about 2 minutes. Remove with slotted spoon and drain on brown paper or paper towels. Sprinkle with confectioners' sugar and serve warm. Makes 15 Beignets.
Bloody Mary 1 tsp. Worcestershire sauce, or to taste 2 dashes hot red-pepper sauce

speak OUT letters to the editor
Half full or half empty?
Dear Editor, Is the glass half empty or is it half full? According to the Democrats in Congress it is spilling over. The Republicans in Congress claim the glass is and always has been empty. Like the impeachment of Bill Clinton, the impeachment of Donald Trump is a total waste of time and taxpayers’ money based upon a partisan dislike of the president in office and sour grapes that their choice of president was not elected. In reverse, if Hillary Clinton was the President in office accused of doing exactly what Donald Trump is accused of, the Democrats in Congress would be falling all over themselves proclaiming Clinton as an all perfect saint incapable of doing anything wrong. Time and money would be better spent on eliminating the opioid epidemic, stopping mail and internet fraud and phone scams, reducing the cost of healthcare, and improving the nation’s infrastructure. Important stuff. Democrats in Congress and Republicans in Congress would not be able to agree upon whether there
was an image of George Washington or an eagle’s image on a quarter. Larry W. Morgan Registered Democrat Dix, Illinois _________________ Send your letters to the editor to: Shopper’s WeeklySpeak Out, P.O. Box 1223, Centralia, IL 62801 or e-mail us at info@theshoppersweekly.com.

THURSDAY NIGHT
Let me start this week by sharing a call from last Thursday morning. I had a reader call and say she wished I would share the opposite view to mine in this column, except trust, she wasn’t that nice (to say the least). Of course, when I asked whom I might be speaking with she wouldn’t tell me. I love those kind of people! They can speak with great passion but haven’t the ____ to give their name. I invited her to share her opinion with everyone in a column we call Speak Out, but that she must sign her name. Hope-

LOOKING FOR A CHURCH HOME? YOU’VE FOUND IT WITH US. Sermon Summary: December 15, 2019 Sermon Title: “Away In A Manger: Joseph”
How many Christmas songs do you know that include Joseph’s name? Not very many, right? How big is the speaking part for Joseph in Christmas plays or skits? It’s non-existent! Have you ever noticed that not once in Matthew or Luke’s Christmas stories do you read, “And Joseph said…” Joseph does not have a speaking part in the Christmas story. YET… in every stable scene THERE HE IS! Joseph was not known for what he SAID. He was known for what he DID. Matthew 1:19 and 20 gives us a very good description of who Joseph was. He was a just man. He did not want to make a public example of Mary. And he was a THINKER! But while he THOUGHT about these things… Joseph is the very spirit of Christmas! At not point did Joseph ever make the story about him. It was always about Jesus! As we enter the final week of Christmas, let’s be more like Joseph. Let’s make it all about Jesus! Have a blessed week!

• Change our foreign aid strategy • Nix the bad Iran deal All of these campaign promises and more have been enacted or completed (unlike typical political promises). Not bad for a brash, uncouth, inexperienced outsider, who promised to drain the swamp in Washington. Oops, one more promise to go! Does this sound like a President that needs to be impeached? This is a President that has endured more than any President since Abraham Lincoln as per total and complete public hate; that includes the media.

fully she’ll take me up on my offer. I wish I could write diffe re nt ly r i g ht n ow. However, what is happening in Congress is completely wrong. It’s creating an even greater divide in our country. Most Democrats in Congress publicly despise President Trump. And yes, Nancy Pelosi, I think you do hate him, or at the very least despise him. I’ve written this column for 25 years, and over the years I’ve never seen such hate, including hate among Democrat and Republican Congressmen
and Congresswomen. In conclusion, let me say there are things I don’t like about President Trump. However, I have to point out I like what he’s done for our country! Candidate Trump promised to: • Cut and reform taxes • Increase jobs • Improve U.S. trade position • Improve the Veterans Administration • Make us oil independent On to our friend, Editor • Get more militar y of the National Review and funding • Bring more troops home well known talk show con• Defeat the ISIS threat tributor Rich Lowry.
tions that he wanted, an improper use of his power that should rightly be the focus of congressional investigation and hearings. Where the Democrats have gotten tangled up is trying to find a justification that supports the enormous weight of impeaching and removing a president for the first time in our history. They’ve cycled through different arguments. First, Trump’s offense was said to be a quid pro quo, a phrase cast aside for supposedly being too Latin for the public to understand; then it was bribery, which has lost ground lately, presumably because of the inherent implausibility of the charge; now, the emphasis is on Trump’s invitation to the Ukrainians to “meddle” and “interfere” in our elections. This is posited to be an ongoing threat. Nancy Pelosi said in her statement calling on the House to draft articles of impeachment: “Our democracy is what is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act because he is trying to corrupt, once again, the election for his own benefit.”
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler said on “Meet the Press” that Trump has to be impeached “for posing the considerable risk that he poses to the next election.” Asked if he thinks the 2020 election will be on the up and up, he said: “I don’t know. The president, based on his past performance, will do everything he can to make it not a fair election.” The gravamen of this case is that the election is too crucial to allow the incumbent president of the United States, who is leading in key battleground states and has some significant chance of winning, to run. In fact, the integrity of the election is so at risk that the U.S. Senate should keep the public from rendering a judgment on Donald Trump’s first term, or deciding between him and, say, his nemesis Joe Biden. Of course, it’s possible to imagine a circumstance where a president would indeed present such a grave risk to our elections that he’d have to be removed.
This is a reason that we have the impeachment process in the first place. But what’s the real harm that Trump’s foolhardy Ukraine adventure presented? The bottom line is that after tsk-tsking Trump for refusing to say in advance that he’d accept the outcome of the 2016 election, Democrats have steadfastly refused to truly accept the 2016 result (allegedly the work of the Russians) and now are signaling they won’t accept next year’s election either, should they lose again. Given their druthers, Trump wouldn’t be an option for the voters. They are rushing their impeachment, in part, because they know that as November 2020 approaches, it becomes steadily less tenable to portray the man who wants to run in an election as the threat to democracy and the people who want to stop him as its champions. With every day that passes, the Democrats risk creating the perception that they themselves are a threat to the 2020 election. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

Christmas Greetings from area businesses
The Story Of The Birth Of Jesus
Christmas traditions focus on several different aspects of family and spiritual life. While many stories are shared around Christmastime, perhaps none bears more significance than the origin of the Christmas celebration. Sharing the Christmas story is an integral part of holiday gatherings, reminding families that faith is foremost during this festive time of year. The Conception of Jesus Mary was a woman living in the Galilee area of Nazareth. She was engaged to a Jewish carpenter named Joseph. An angel visited the Virgin Mary and told her that she would conceive a child — a son — by the power of the Holy Spirit. When the son was born, she would name him Jesus. Mary questioned the angel, who reassured her that anything was possible by God and that Jesus would be God’s own son. Joseph was troubled when he found out Mary was with child and even considered breaking their engagement, which was allowed under Jewish law. But God soon sent another angel, this time to Joseph, in a dream. The angel reassured Joseph that his marriage to Mary and the
birth of this child were His will. Joseph awoke from his dream and took Mary as his wife soon after, ready and willing to raise the child despite the public humiliation he may experience. The Census During this time the Romans had control over many parts of the world, including where Joseph and Mary resided. Ruler Caesar Augustus decreed that every person living under Roman rule had to return to his town of origin to participate in a census so everyone could be taxed accordingly. Joseph, hailing from Bethlehem, had to return to this town with his very pregnant bride. They traveled for many days and, upon arriving in Bethlehem, found that the inns were full and there was no available lodging. Mary and Joseph took shelter in a stable and prepared to welcome their son. Jesus’ Arrival According to the Gospel of Luke, Mary gave birth to her firstborn, a son, while in the stable. She wrapped him in cloth and placed him in a manger because there was no guest room available for them. And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying, “Glory to God in the highest heaven, and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.” When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.” So they hurried off and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby, who was lying in the manger. When they had seen him, they spread the word concerning what had been told them about this child, and all who heard it were amazed at what the shepherds said to them. — Luke Chapter 2 Many people visited the baby Jesus, including three wise men from the East who traveled by following a guiding star to bestow gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh on the baby king. When Joseph and Mary had performed all the things necessary according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Nazareth with Jesus, who was growing strong in spirit and filled with wisdom and the grace of God.

bring other end over the first to form 3 layers of dough. Roll dough again to a rectangle; fold, wrap, and refrigerate. Repeat 2 more times. Prepare Pecan Filling: In small bowl, combine flour, butter, brown sugar, and cinnamon with fork until mixture is crumbly. Stir in chopped pecans and raisins; set filling aside. In a cup, beat remaining egg with water to make egg glaze; set aside. To make 1 large ring, roll dough out to 24- by 18-inch rectangle. For 2 small rings, cut dough in half; keep one half of dough refrigerated until ready to shape. Roll each half to 18- by 12-inch rectangle. Brush rolled dough with some egg glaze; sprinkle with pecan filling. (Use half the filling in each small ring.) Starting from long side, roll dough up, jelly-roll style, pinching to seal outside edges. Shape roll in circle or oval on large baking sheet with rim. (Use large jelly-roll pan, pizza pan, or heavy-duty aluminum foil on flat baking sheet with edges of foil turned up to catch drips. ) Pinch ends together to seal into a ring. With very sharp knife, make cuts 3/4 inch apart, around outside edge of ring, cutting to within 1/2 inch of center. Twist cut sections almost flat on baking sheet so filling shows, yet center is still attached. Overlap sections slightly, working around ring. Cover ring with clean cloth and let rise at room temperature, until light and spongy, about 35 min. After ring rises, refrigerate 15 min. before baking to harden butter. Heat oven to 400°F. Carefully brush ring with egg glaze; arrange pecan halves, if desired. Bake small rings 20 to 25 min. or large ring 30 to 40 min. Ring will sound hollow when tapped on top. Remove coffee ring from baking sheet and cool on wire rack. In small bowl, combine confectioners' sugar and enough milk to make a smooth glaze and drizzle over pecan ring. Makes 1 large or 2 small rings.

In 1-quart saucepan, heat milk just until bubbles form around side of pan. Remove from heat. Cool to warm. In large bowl, sprinkle yeast over water. Stir in half the sugar and set aside until it is foamy, about 10 minutes. Stir in remaining sugar, warm milk, 1 egg, salt, and nutmeg. Stir in 2 cups flour and mix until smooth. Stir in 1 cup flour, or just enough to form a very soft dough. Turn dough out onto floured surface. Knead gently, adding more flour if necessary, just until it forms a soft ball, about 1½ minutes. It should be just barely manageable and will not be elastic. Use a dough scraper to help lift it if necessary. Lightly oil large bowl. Place dough in bowl, turning it to bring oiled side up. Cover with clean cloth and let rise in warm place, away from drafts, until double in size, 1 to 1½ hours. Meanwhile, cut each stick of butter into 8 pieces and place on sheet of waxed paper. Sprinkle butter with 1/4 cup flour. With fingers, quickly work flour into butter just until blended but still firm. Shape butter mixture into 6-inch square. Wrap in waxed paper and refrigerate until it has consistency of vegetable shortening, about 15 minutes. On floured surface, invert bowl to remove dough. Do not punch dough down or pastries will be tough. With floured rolling pin, roll dough to 12-inch square. Unwrap butter and place diagonally in center of dough. Bring comers of dough, one at a time, over butter to center, overlapping by 1 inch. Press edges of dough to flatten and seal in butter. With rolling pin, gently roll dough to even 18- by 9-inch rectangle. Be sure edges are even. Do not press too firmly or butter will be forced out. (In a warm kitchen, if butter softens too much, transfer dough to baking sheet and refrigerate until firm.) Bring one 9-inch end of dough rectangle over center third of dough. Brush off excess flour and

CHRISTMAS TIDBITS TO PUT YOU IN THE
Holiday Spirit
The holiday season has arrived, and millions of people across the globe will be celebrating Christmas with their families and friends. The following are some interesting tidbits to share with your loved ones this holiday season. • Each year, more than three billion Christmas cards are sent in the United States alone. • In 350 AD, Pope Julius I, bishop of Rome, proclaimed December 25 the official celebration date for the birth of Jesus Christ. Many historians and theologians have surmised that Christ really wasn't born this time of year, thanks to imagery and information from the Bible. • Christmas carols began as an English custom called "wassailing." Individuals toasted neighbors to a long and healthy life. • The song "Jingle Bells" was originally written for Thanksgiving and not Christmas. People loved it so much that the lyrics were changed to fit Christmas.
• Despite the common tale that three wise men paid homage to baby Jesus, the Bible never specifically calls out a number. Similarly, there's no specific indication that they visited the infant Jesus. Their visit may have occurred when Jesus was older. • Santa Claus' modern look was inspired by writings from The Knickerbockers of New York and imagery from Clement Clarke Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Moore denied authoring the famous poem for 15 years after it was published anonymously, feeling the poem was beneath his talents. • Santa has his own official postal code. It's H0 H0 H0. • Christmas was not declared an official holiday in the United States until June 26, 1870. • Before turkey, the traditional Christmas meal served in England was a pig's head and mustard. • Male reindeer tend to shed their antlers in the winter. This means Santa's reindeer are likely female. • Christ may have been born in a cave rather than a manger. According to the gospel of Luke, the shepherds that helped find shelter for Mary to give birth kept their flock in a cave. The Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem is built over a cave called the Grotto of the Nativity, where Jesus is believed to have been born.

• Many people may be less inclined to stand under mistletoe waiting for a kiss if they knew what "mistletoe" means in the ancient Germanic language. It literally means "dung on a twig," for the bird who eats the berries and then leaves seeds in droppings to propagate new plants. • Each holiday season, PNC Wealth Management calculates the costs of the gifts in the song, "The 12 Days of Christmas." The price index for the gifts went from $12,673 in 1984 to more than $24,000 in 2011. The most expensive gift is the swimming swans.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) That change in holiday travel plans might be more vexing than you’d expected. But try to take it in stride. Also, it couldn’t hurt to use that Aries charm to coax out some helpful cooperation. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your Bovine determination helps you deal with an unforeseen complication. And, as usual, you prove that when it comes to a challenge, you have what it takes to take it on. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Although a romantic theme dominates much of the week, all those warm and fuzzy feelings don’t interfere with the more pragmatic matters you need to take care of. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Best not to ignore those doubts about an upcoming decision. Instead, recheck the facts you were given to make sure nothing important was left out. A weekend surprise awaits you. LEO (July 23 to August 22) No time for a catnap -- yet. You might still have to straighten out one or two factors so that you can finally assure yourself of the truth about a troubling workplace situation. Stay with it. VIRGO (August 23 September 22) News from an old friend could lead to an unexpected (but nonetheless welcome) reunion with someone who had once been very special in your life. Be open to the possibilities. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) It might be time for a family council. The sooner those problems
are resolved, the sooner you can move ahead with your holiday preparations. Don’t let the opportunity pass you by. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Take some time out to give more attention to a personal relationship that seems to be suffering from a sense of emotional neglect. Provide that much-needed reassurance. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Cheer up. That unusual circumstance that might faze most people can be handled pretty well by the savvy Sagittarian. Look at it as an opportunity rather than an obstacle. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Someone you believe has hurt you in the past might now need your help. Reaching out could be difficult. But the generous Goat will be able to do the right thing, as always. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Prioritizing is an important part of your pre-holiday scheduling. Try to give time both to your workday responsibilities and those personal matters you might have neglected. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With the vestiges of your anger about that painful incident fading, you can now focus all your energy on the more positive aspects of your life, including that personal situation.
