Mt. Vernon Business Women’s Club holds annual July auction By Tina Suarez The Mt. Vernon Womenʼs Club held its July meeting with its annual auction. The auction was held at the Prince of Peace Lutheran Church is Mt. Vernon. Everyone in attendance brought a covered dish and items to be auctioned off for the evening. President Marilyn Konold began the meeting with the pledge of allegiance. She then asked for a motion to dispense with the meeting for the evening. Entertainment for the evening was Greg Backes on guitar. He asked for requests from the ladies in the audience. While he
was performing everyone enjoyed a delicious potluck dinner. After the dinner, the auction was started with Auctioneer Tina Suarez and assistants Natalie Wellen and Nikki Timberlake. Everyone enjoyed all of the great items to bid on. The money raised for the evening will go to scholarships given by the club. Natalie Wellen Greg Backes Club members enjoying the auction The Mt. Applications for IDNR’s OSLAD and LWCF Grant Programs The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is accepting applications for grants through the Open Space Land Acquisition and Development (OSLAD) and the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant programs. The OSLAD program is a s t at e - f i n a n c e d g r a nt program that provides funding assistance to local government agencies for acquisition and/or development of land for public outdoor recreation areas. OSLAD is a matching program that provides an advance payment (for development projects only) that is 50 percent of the grant
award amount shortly after the grant agreement is executed. The local agency must demonstrate and possess the ability to finance the remaining costs of an approved project prior to receipt of remaining grant funds. This program is funded through a percentage of the state’s Real Estate Transfer Tax. The LWCF is a program that utilizes federal dollars to acquire land to be used for outdoor recreation. This program provides up to 50 percent of the certified market value of property acquired to be developed into outdoor recreation areas. No advance payment is allowed on acquisition projects. IDNR adds archery deer hunting sites The Illinois Department of Natural Resources recently announced applications are being accepted for archery deer hunting on private land this October through the Illinois R e c re at i on a l Ac c e ss Program (IRAP). The application deadline for IRAP archery deer hunting opportunities is Aug. 23. IRAP has more than 20,600 acres of private land leased for public access. At least 200 sites are available to the public for archery deer hunting for the month of October through IRAP in 30 counties, including Adams, Bureau, Calhoun, Christian, Clay, Coles, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hamilton, Jasper, Jersey, Johnson, Lee, Macoupin, Madison, Marion, McDonough, Monroe, Montgomery, Morgan, Pike, Pope, Sangamon, Schuyler, Scott, St. Clair, Wayne, Whiteside, and Williamson. To participate, hunters must submit an application by Aug. 23 to be eligible for the IRAP archery deer
drawing. Applicants must have passed a hunter safety course (if born in 1980 or after), have a valid hunting licens e, and cho os e whether they prefer to hunt October 1-15 or October 16-31. IRAP is open to both resident and non-resident hunters. Youth hunters are encouraged to apply and are given preference in the lottery when sites are assigned. “We are grateful to the landowners who allow public access on their property through the Illinois R e c re at i on a l Ac c e ss Program and realize the importance of Illinois’ hunting heritage,” said IDNR Director Colleen Callahan. “IRAP is a wonderful opportunity for us to partner with private landowners to provide for much-needed access for hunting and assist with improving the habitat on these private properties.” Applications for IRAP Archery Deer Hunting sites can be found online at https://www.dnr.illinois. gov/conservation/IRAP/
Pages/Archer y-DeerHunting.aspx Successful applicants will be notified by mail approximately three weeks before their assigned hunting period. The notice will include the location of their hunting site, a site map, and an IRAP site permit. The IRAP program is funded through a Voluntary Public Access Habitat Improvement Program grant from the U.S. D ep ar t ment of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service. IRAP provides multiple public access opportunities, such as turkey, archery deer, small game, waterfowl, and upland bird hunting; pond and riverbank fishing; boat access on public waterways; and, access for hiking, birding and outdoor photography For more information, visit: http://www.dnr.illinois.gov/conservation/ IRAP/Pages/default.aspx or e-mail IRAP@illinois. gov.

• On July 19, 1884, President Chester Arthur issues a proclamation that grants him and the federal government the power to quarantine persons entering the U.S. to avoid the
spread of “pestilence” (tuberculosis). • On July 17, 1941, New York Yankees center fielder Joe DiMaggio fails to get a hit against the Cleveland Indians, bring-
ing his historic 56-game hitting streak to an end. DiMaggio also lost the $10,000 promised to him by Heinz ketchup for matching the number “57” featured on its labels. • On July 21, 1959, Elijah Jerry “Pumpsie” Green makes his Boston Red Sox debut, becoming the first African American ever to play for the Red Sox, the last team in the major leagues to integrate. • On July 15, 1965, the

unmanned spacecraft Mariner 4 passes over Mars at an altitude of 6,000 feet and transmits the first close-up images of the red planet. The 22 pictures revealed a barren wasteland of craters, dismissing 19th-century speculations that an advanced civilization might exist there. • On July 20, 1972, a two-year study by the U.S. Department of Transportation concludes
that 1960-63 Chevrolet Corvairs are at least as safe as comparable models of other cars. In his book “Unsafe at Any Speed,” Ralph Nader had targeted the rear-engined Corvair due to its tendency to roll over. • On July 18, 1986, new close-up videos of the sunken ocean liner Titanic are released. The wreck was found in 1985 off Newfoundland, 13,000 feet down on the ocean

• If you have a small bedroom with room for only a little bedside table, try hanging a lamp over it or using a wall-mounted lamp. It will free up space on your nightstand. • Give kids small laundry baskets to race around the house collecting things that don’t belong where they are. Then sort items and separate the misplaced items back into the baskets. Have kids deliver them to the right place. Older kids can collect any dirty dishes from around the house using a dishpan, and return them to the kitchen. • “We add about an inch of kitty litter in the bottom of our kitchen trash can. If the can liner were to leak any liquids, they would be absorbed, and the litter does a great job of keeping smells in check.” — Y.J. in Ohio
• Here’s a great idea: Use a three-ring binder or an accordion folder to store manuals for appliances or electronics. An accordion folder is especially useful if the appliance comes with a small tool necessary for adjustments or any extra pieces that would be helpful to have on hand. • “I have a zip-close baggie in my purse for trash. This way I can prevent small wrappers, unnecessary receipts, gum or other such litter from floating around my bag. I simply empty the bag from time to time and reuse it.” — C.D. in Utah

It seems that the Democratic Presidential candidates are split into thirds. 1) There’s the Joe Biden side, some calling for less change and getting some things done, attracting Democratic conservatives and moderates. 2) Then there’s the Elizabeth Warren side, calling for larger scale policies and taking chances, attracting some extreme left liberals. 3) Then there’s Bernie Sanders’ Political Revolution, calling for all to join him in his fight to change America to socialism. But all have one problem, that being Donald J. Trump! The four top Democrats to date in the running are Biden, Warren, Sanders and Kamala Harris. I have to admit, the more I get to know the new Democratic Party the less I like them. Please note I said new. My biggest issue, among others, is the cry for socialism and a socialist agenda, and what it would turn this country into. However, along with socialism, in my opinion, I believe illegal immigration will be another large concern in the 2020 elections, as it stands today. I realize a lot can happen
before Nov. 3, 2020! And with that said, let’s move on to the “ICE raids” (as some would say) that started last Sunday in 12 cities across the country. In my opinion, these aren’t raids. It’s called enforcing the law, targeting those individuals that have been ordered to leave the U.S. but refuse to go. Let me remind all that this same enforcement action took place under Barack Obama in 2012, minus, of course, the outcry from the bleeding hearts! And to top all this off, there’s the outcry for those held in detainment centers which I addressed in last week’s column. The biggest issue, again, is the great influx of illegals crossing our borders. Sunday morning on Meet the Press they showed pictures of one particular detainment center that’s been questioned. The pictures showed all men, no women or kids. It was also pointed out they got three hot meals a day from local restaurants. There were shower facilities available as well as more added, and their personal needs were being met. The biggest
complaint by some detainees was they had been detained too long. Yet there are those still calling foul. But what they don’t tell you is we are still in a catch and release mode. In recent polls, I will say they show most Americans want a system that’s fair and legal. The key word is legal. On to the Robert Mueller hearing scheduled for this week. It has been postponed until July 24, just more waste of time and money. So another hearing and then Congress leaves for a six-week summer vacation. (Oops, I mean recess so they can work on their re-election campaigns.) In my opinion, let them rip. It’s just another wonderful opportunity for Congress to humiliate themselves again! You gotta love it! On to another sports hero — in some eyes, not mine — Co-Captain of the U.S. National Soccer Team Megan Rapinoe, who took a knee to the National Anthem and showed total disrespect for our flag, on the field. This behavior will never

And while representing the U.S. on a U.S. team is not the right time, place, and way. I will note that during her un-American display, as the U.S. Flag hit the ground while the world was watching, one of her team members rescued it! She was the real hero! In closing this week, most of us are aware of and outraged by the decision of Illinois Governor Pritzker’s Administration to cancel the performance of the popular group Confederate Railroad at the DuQuoin State Fair because of their name. But, to make matters worse, Snoop Dogg has been booked to play at the Springfield State Fair. The same jerk that is shown on his 2017 album cover (which was pulled) with a body on a slab covered by the American flag. The body is identified by a toe tag as President Donald J. Trump. The album, “Make America Crip Again,” refers to gang violence, as do many of his albums. Needless to say, John and I won’t be attending either fair this year. This is way beyond acceptable. Gov. Pritzker responded to the backlash by saying the State is concerned about confederate imagery. As per Snoop Dogg and why he’s still performing at the State Fair in Springfield, JB said, “There’s an enormous difference between political satire and the discussion by a single artist and his political views.” Really? The good news, Confederate Railroad will play Thursday, September 5, 2019 at Black Diamond Harle y D av ids on in Marion. More on that later. Until next week.

Blood emergency: Red Cross issues urgent call for blood and platelet donors Missing Types sees encouraging response, but all donors needed now. In June, the Red Cross launched the Missing Types campaign to encourage donors – especially new donors and those who have not donated in the past years – to give blood or platelets during the challenging summer months. Through the campaign, the letters A, B and O – letters that make up the main blood groups – disappeared from popular brands to symbolize what happens when blood goes missing from hospital shelves during blood shortages. Despite an encouraging response to the campaign, blood donations still fell short of expectations in June, resulting in more than 24,000 fewer donations than needed, 728 fewer here in the MissouriIllinois Blood Services Region, and causing a significant draw down of the Red Cross blood supply. “Blood is only available when generous blood and platelet donors roll up a sleeve to give, and right now, all donors – especially those give have never given or haven’t given in a while – are urged to make an appointment to give today,” Numark added.
Following a difficult Fourth of July week for blood and platelet donations and ongoing challenges finding new blood donors, the American Red Cross now faces a blood shortage and has issued an emergency call for eligible individuals of all blood types to give now and prevent delays in medical care. About 450 fewer blood drives were organized by businesses and other community groups last week than during a typical week as people across the country celebrated the holiday with activities and travel. This led to about 17,000 fewer blood donations than needed for patients in a single week, causing the Red Cross to now have less than a three-day supply of most blood types available – and less than a two-day supply of type O blood – for patients. At least a fiveday supply is desired. “Medical emergencies and critical treatments don’t stop for holiday celebrations. Patients depend on lifesaving blood transfusions every day,” said Cliff Numark, senior vice president, Red Cross Blood Services. “Right now, the Red Cross only has less than a three-day supply when we need a five-day supply to be prepared for all situations that require blood products. To help meet this need, we’ve added about 8,000 additional appointments at blood donation centers and community blood drives over the next few weeks to accommodate more donors. But we need people to fill those appointments, please join us today.”
a RapidPass online health history questionnaire are encouraged to help reduce the time it takes to donate. Surfer Girl Surfing is a popular worldwide sport today, but when did it start and what is collected? People have been swimming and bodysurfing by riding the waves since ancient times. But it was the Polynesians who started riding the waves on a board long before the Europeans discovered the sport during the first voyage of James Cook to Tahiti in 1769. Their chief was the best at the sport with the best board and beaches. The surfing skill gave him added prestige. Ancient Hawaiians, Samoans, Tongans and other islanders also used boards to surf partially as an art and religious activity. Modern-day surfing started with the American tourists who wanted to learn the Hawaiian natives’ sport in the mid-1860s. Some were successful, and in 1908, a club was formed. In 1885, three Hawaiian princes visited Santa Cruz, California, and surfed. And in 1907, an expert was brought to California to promote the sport. It spread to North Carolina, then Florida, then any good American beach with proper waves, but it didn’t become a fad until the movie “Gidget” in 1959. Surfboards were the first important collectible. Collectors can now find the ever-changing surfboards, clothing, professional contest prizes (after about 1975), surf music, recordings and sheet music,

movies and even toys. Hubley Manufacturing Company (1894-c.1975) made a painted metal toy with a girl riding a surfboard on waves. It had wheels that let it roll on an eccentric path. The girl’s one-piece yellow bathing suit suggests a date in the late 1950s or ‘60s, early for a surfer toy. It sold for $5,700. Surfer collecting is still young, and prices are highest today for the artistic surfboards. *** Q: I know you should not use boiled linseed oil to polish your wooden furniture, even though that was recommended in my mother’s day. It gets hard and crystallizes, and it’s hard to remove. But what oil should I use? A: Some experts say that you shouldn’t use any type of oil on finished wood — not even lemon, linseed, tung or oil-based polishes. They often do nothing, because you can’t “feed” wood. But the oil can attract

Grilled Burgers With A Twist I love summer for a lot of reasons, but one is I get to say to my husband — my better half — what's for dinner? It's chilling time for me but grilling time for him! And nothing's better on the grill than good old hamburgers, for parties as well as casual dinners. Personally, my favorite is grilled sirloin burgers topped with swiss cheese and sauteed mushrooms. Below are a few new twists for burgers, perfect for a summer meal with sides of slaw or potato salad, sliced tomatoes and fresh fruit.
Soy Dipped Burgers 1/2 cup each soy sauce and water 1 clove garlic, minced or pressed 2 tsp. grated fresh ginger 2 T. Worcestershire 6 T. firmly packed brown sugar
3 lbs. lean ground beef 8 hamburger buns or French rolls, split and buttered Thinly sliced tomatoes Green bell pepper rings
In bowl, mix soy, water, garlic, ginger, Worcestershire, and sugar. Shape beef into 8 patties, each about 1 inch thick; place in large heavy-duty plastic bag. Pour soy marinade over patties in bag; seal bag securely and rotate to distribute marinade. Place in shallow baking pan. Refrigerate (or place in picnic cooler) for 1 to 2 hours. Lift patties from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade). Place patties on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once and basting several times with marinade, until done to your liking; cut to test (about 10 minutes for medium-rare). When you turn patties, place buns, cut side down, around outside of grill to toast. Serve patties on buns, with tomatoes and bell pepper rings. Makes 8 servings.
Taco Burgers 1 can (about 1 lb.) refried beans 2 medium-size tomatoes, sliced 1 large ripe avocado, pitted, peeled, sliced, and tossed with 2 tsp. lemon juice 1 lb. lean ground beef 1 small onion, chopped
1/4 cup fine dry bread crumbs 1 egg, beaten 1 tsp. Worcestershire 1/3 cup canned diced green chiles 3/4 tsp. ground cumin 6 corn tortillas Prepared taco sauce
Place beans in pan and heat through; keep warm. Place tomatoes and avocado in separate dishes. In bowl, combine beef, onion, bread crumbs, egg, Worcestershire, chiles, and cumin. Mix well, then shape into 6 rectangular patties, each about 3/8 inch thick. Place patties on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning once, until browned and done to your liking; cut to test (4 to 6 minutes for medium-rare). To serve, heat tortillas on grill just until softened (15 to 20 seconds), turning often with tongs. Spread beans on tortilla; then place meat patty, tomatoes, and avocado slices on one side and drizzle with taco sauce. Fold other side of tortilla over meat and vegetables; eat out of hand. Makes 6 servings.

Cook, turning once, until done to your liking; cut to test (about 10 minutes for medium-rare). When you turn patties, place buns, cut side down, around outside of grill to toast. Serve patties in buns. Makes 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
Do You Have Hope? Trust, reliance; 2) desire Do you have hope? Awhile back I stopped at a McDonald’s to grab an ice-tea. While standing in line, I overheard a conversation between a young lady in line in front of me and the young man at the cash register. The lady said, somewhat proudly, “I’m an atheist.” Then, rather condescending, she said, “Do you know what an atheist is?” “Yes,” replied the young man, “an atheist is a person without hope.” What a great answer, I thought. A person without God and who has no belief in Jesus Christ is without hope. “If, in this life only, we have hope, we are of all men most miserable,” said the apostle Paul. (I Corinthians 15:17-19) What is hope? The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines hope as, “1)
accompanied by expectation of fulfillment; also, something hoped for; 3) one that gives promise for the future.” I define hope as the confident expectation of the goodness of God. The young lady at McDonald’s said she was an atheist. What causes someone not to believe there is a God? For some it is encountering a great tragedy or a great injustice in life. For others, it could be a denial of having to stand before a holy God and give account for wickedness and sin. But just claiming there is no God doesn’t make it so. And as the cashier at McDonald’s said so perceptively, “An atheist is a person without hope.” Paul says that an honest look at creation points men to a Creator. (Romans 1:20-21) A look at creation should
bring one to the conclusion that there is a Grand Designer. Do you need hope? Put your trust in the God who willingly died for you and arose again from the dead, victorious over death, hell, and the grave. I read this Facebook post recently, “The devil couldn’t take you out so he’s trying to wear you out. Don’t you dare get tired. Hold on because the tide is turning.” (From “We Believe in God”) The prophet Jeremiah gave us this message of hope from God. “’For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,’ says the Lord, ‘Thoughts of peace and not of evil, to give you a future and a hope. Then you will call upon me and go and pray to me, and I will listen to you.’” (Jeremiah 29:1113) Trust and pray. Remember, the same God that made a way the last time will make a way this time. God is still writing your story. Quit trying to steal the pen. Do you have hope? Look to Jesus the Messiah. “Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace
with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” (Romans 5:1) Think about some of the key words in this verse: justified by faith; peace with God; Jesus Christ; grace; rejoice in hope. Paul summed up the driving force of life with these words, “And now abides faith, hope, and love, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (I Corinthians 13:13) Perfect love casts out all fear. Isaac Watts wrote in his great hymn “The Solid Rock” the following, “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest frame, but wholly lean on Jesus’ name.” As the cashier at McDonald’s said, “An atheist is a person without hope.” Believe in God and live in hope. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your Aries leadership qualities can help bring order out of all that confusion, whether it’s on the job or in the home. But be careful to guide, not goad, others into following you. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Applying a more personal view to a joblinked issue could help provide better insight into those persistent problems. Use your keen Taurean logic to cut through the double-talk. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Taking some time off could be the best way to get through that seemingly endless round of demands. You’ll return refreshed and ready to tackle things from a new perspective. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Restoring a sagging professional relationship takes a lot of effort. By all means, state your position. But also make sure you pay close attention to the other person’s point of view. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A hot prospect intrigues the Big Cat, who is always on the prowl for a promising investment. But be careful that this “promise” has a chance of being kept. Check it out more carefully. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) A friend could use some of your compassion and concern. If he or she doesn’t ask for help, be sure you step up and make the first move. Also, check out a new career possibility. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might have difficulty getting your opinions heard because of all the noise being made by the other side.
But hang in there. Others should line up with you once they learn the facts. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Offering to help a colleague is commendable. But before you commit your time and effort, check to see if that person’s situation is all that he or she has led you to believe it is. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You soon should be seeing positive results from your recent efforts on behalf of a family member. On another matter, check that you have all the facts regarding a job assignment. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Your aspects favor closer family relationships this week. Take time for visits, whether in person, by phone, by mail or in cyberspace. Let them know how important they are to you. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A missed opportunity isn’t always a negative. Maybe your instincts are telling you not to rush into something you “thought” was worthwhile. Make time for family this weekend. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Your sense of humor helps you get through a tricky situation. But some stick-in-the-muds might not be so willing to make the changes that you and others agree are necessary. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for making everyone you know — or even just met — feel important and welcome in your life. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
