JCHV dedicates new tombstone for historical individual By Tina Suarez Stinson Anderson, the other lieutenant governor, and Zadok Casey, U.S. Congressman and lieutenant governor — forgotten men from Mt. Vernon that made a difference. The Jefferson County Historical Village held a dedication for a new tombstone marker for Stinson Anderson on July 6, 2019. Sharon Francois welcomed everyone to the program. Refreshments were available to everyone in attendance. After the presentation, a tour of the cemetery where these men were buried was given. Clearly the most important figure in Jefferson County before the Civil

War was Zadok Casey. He received most of the attention and deservedly so for his contributions to Jefferson County. He receives most of the space in the Jefferson County histories. His name, as you will see, is on Mt. Vernon streets. The junior high school is named the Zadok Casey Middle School. Even in death, Casey (literally) towers over Anderson. Both are buried in Old Union Cemetery, but Casey’s tall, expensive tombstone with the iron fence surrounding it cannot be missed. Anderson’s nearby tombstone is a small, ordinary marker that is so average that when his

name faded over the years no one even noticed. An overhanging tree in the cemetery covered the stone. When looking for his grave, no one really knew where to look. It is apparent that Casey deserves many credits for his numerous achievements. He was both a U.S. C ong ressman and a Lieutenant Governor of Illinois. But if you don’t know a lot about your history, Jefferson County can brag on having another Lieutenant Governor, and his name was Stinson Anderson. First, there is a comparison of the two men, which hopefully will give the

readers and historians more perspective on both prominent men for the county of Jefferson in Illinois. Both men came from the south. They were both very hard working men as well as ambitious. It should be noted that neither had a formal education but had “ leader” written all over them. Both entered their political careers as democrats but became rivals in the early years of the county. But it should be noted that there were significant differences in both their characteristics and interests. Casey was a minister who helped found the First Methodist Church in Mt. Vernon. other hand, was not known nessman and land dealer to be a member of any who lived in a large home church at all but was known on a hill overlooking Mt. to give generously to all churches. Casey was a busiSee Tombstone, page 2

On Business

This week’s Spotlight on Business is brought to you by Grace Payne of the Mt. Vernon Convention and Visitors Bureau. Jennifer Carmona and her husband Oscar, better known as Carlos, have always worked in the restaurant industry. They began saving up to open their own restaurant and in 2017, Guero’s Mexican Restaurant became a reality. Born in Mt. Vernon, Jennifer has always had ties to the city she grew up in. Guero’s is located in the heart of downtown as Jennifer believes, “The downtown is the cornerstone of the entire city.” Being open now for two years, Guero’s sees regular customers daily. Jennifer takes the time to know her customers and can remember many of their daily orders. Guero’s currently has 25 employees. Many of those employees have had previous management experience. Discussing the types of employees they hire, Jennifer states, “I like people who are actually hospitable. They genuinely like people. It’s the only thing I look for.” Carlos hires and trains all of the back-of-house employees. Jennifer admits owning a restaurant and running it by yourself is hard. Shuffling, planning, and organizing, can become a stressor as the days are always busy. The most rewarding part of owning Guero’s? Jennifer states, “I get to do what I want to do.” For someone that has never dined at Guero’s, Jennifer describes the food as “authentic Mexican recipes with an American spin”. Dishes are known for their different flavor, as Carlos creates his own secret seasoning that goes on every dish he makes. And their tamale recipe? It

belongs to Carlos’s mother. Carlos preps all of the ingredients, in house, each morning. He arrives at 8 a.m. and his team joins him at 9 a.m. to make sure everything is ready for opening at 11 a.m. Jennifer explains, “We make beans, rice, and salsa every morning. Cutting corners is where you lose people. You get what you pay for.” If Mexican food isn’t your favorite cuisine, Guero’s still has an entrée for you! Enjoy a bacon cheeseburger or philly cheesesteak while your family chows down on burritos and tamales. Restuarantguru.com lists Guero’s as the #1 restaurant in Mt. Vernon, based on average ratings across the internet. The Mexican restaurant has won different awards for two tasty and unique dishes. The Vallarta, winning People’s Choice 2018 at the Taste of Mt. Vernon, is a dish with specially seasoned grilled chicken and shrimp paired with sautéed mushrooms and onions, drizzled with queso over a bed of rice. Jennifer notes, “Our queso is a special recipe. If you try anyone else’s, you’ll be able to tell.” Their Al Ambres Fajita with chicken or steak won second place in H a m i l t o n C o u n t y. Anything coined “on the beach” is a best seller at Guero’s. Chicken, steak, or shrimp served over a bed of rice with queso. New to the menu, you can now try tamales or beef tips on the beach. Other menu items you’ll find at Guero’s include shrimp or fish tacos, steak and eggs, sizzling fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas, carnitas, drinks, desserts, and more! On Cinco de Mayo, Guero’s hosted their first block party and was blown away by the amount of participation and success of the event. They closed 9th street and offered face painting, inflatables, a

homemade salsa contest, t aco e ating contest, running with the bulls, d a n c e c o mp e t i t i o n , vendors, Mexican street food, and so many other fun activities. Jennifer’s goal was to get everyone outdoors to enjoy a day together. She comments, “I wish I lived in the 50s. Neighborhoods used to come outside and hang out. That’s how you got a closer bond.” Many are looking forward to Guero’s next festival for Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead, November 2. When you support local businesses, you are supporting local families by paying them directly and keeping the money here. Jennifer remarks that many business owners on 9th Street all shop from each other regularly. She tells her employees that she isn’t their boss, the customer is. When a customer comes in to eat, they are paying an employee’s check, not Jennifer and Carlos. Word of mouth is the best form of advertisement for Guero’s. By helping other organizations in the community and catering to many outside groups and events, Guero’s has seen a return on support and growth in their business. The next time those Mexican food cravings kick in, take a trip to Guero’s Mexican Restaurant! Chat with Jennifer and Carlos and enjoy Mexican recipes with an American spin. Kids enjoy “In the Wild” VBS

Logan Street Baptist Church had an amazing week in the wild. This year’s Vacation Bible School theme, In the Wild, encouraged kids to zoom in and focus on Jesus. LSBC reached the city of Mt.

Vernon and beyond with exciting music, arts and crafts, recreation, missions studies, and an emphasis on the Word of God. Kids enjoyed experiencing the story of young photographers trying to win a pho-

STION E U Q OF THE

tography contest and learned awesome dance moves to VBS songs. Stephanie Gleason, LSBC’s fabulous VBS director, had many “firsts” to navigate this year. This was Logan Street’s first time to have VBS at night, first time having VBS in their new building, and the first VBS with their new pastor, Denver Ayres. There was even an adult VBS class this year as well.

During the week, a major storm knocked out the electricity at the church and put VBS in the dark. The kids and workers, however, gathered together singing songs and praising Jesus… a magnificent sight to behold. Also, 12 students gave their lives to Christ and had their salvation experience. That is the true reason hundreds of adults and kids gathered at LSBC last week.

We can learn much from a study of the life of the apostle Peter. One lesson I’ve learned is you don’t need to know all the answers, you just need to know the one who does — Jesus Christ. I was communicating with someone on Messenger and said, “Jesus is coming soon.” She replied, “I hope not.” Many believe that Jesus is coming again as he said he would. But they hope it’s not soon. The apostle Peter was thrown into prison by the Roman emperor Nero and was facing probable execution. He had heard that there were those in the Roman church who were teaching that Jesus was not coming back and many were living an immoral lifestyle. He wrote his epistle to refute such teaching and warn believers to be ready for the second coming of

Christ and the signs of the last days. II Peter 3 instructs us how to live in the light of the second coming of Jesus Christ. LAST DAYS SIGN. “Scoffers will come in the last days, walking according to their own lusts and saying, “Where is the promise of his coming? For since the Father’s fell asleep, all things continue as they were.” (II Peter 3:1-4) Today, many scoff at the doctrine of Christ’s soon return. On the Day of Pentecost, Peter announced that we were in the last days. (Acts 2:16-17) We are now over 2,000 years closer to the coming of Jesus. LEARN FROM PAST JUDGEMENTS OF GOD. Peter reminds us that, in the past, God destroyed the earth with a great flood because of the wickedness of mankind. Only Noah and his family were saved in the ark. Now the heavens and earth are reserved for judgement by fire. (II Peter 3:5-7)

If you are interested in joining in the fun next year, keep in contact with Logan Street Baptist Church on LONGSUFFERING IS WHY GOD HAS DELAYED CHRIST ’S SECOND COMING. “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some count slackness, but is long suffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (II Peter 3:8-9) What is his promise? He promised to come back again. (John 14:1-6) Only repentance from sin and faith in Christ can make you ready for the catching away of the church on that day. We see God’s mercy. LETHAL JUDGEMENT IS COMING, on the inhabitants of the earth who refuse to repent. (II Peter 3:10-12) It will be a terrible time. The book of Revelation describes it. (Revelation 19:11-14; 20:12-14) Jesus promises salvation and escape for believers who live faithful to Christ. (Luke 21:36) Paul refers to this promise of salvation. (Romans 13:11; I Thessalonians 5:9) LIVING READY. The theme of Peter’s second epistle is that believers must live ready to meet Christ for he is coming as a “thief in the night,” taking most by surprise. “Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in

their website at logan streetbaptist, org or download their app on any app store. holy conduct and godliness.” (II Peter 3:11) LOOK FOR HIS COMING. Peter urges believers to look for the coming of Christ. (II Peter 3:12-14) Jesus told us that when we see the signs of his coming being fulfilled, to look up, “your redemption is drawing near.” (Luke 21:27-28) We are to eagerly wait for the Savior. (Philippians 3:20-21) There is a similar verse in Hebrews 9:28, “To those who eagerly wait for him he will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.” LOVE THE LORD AND HIS WORD. By the cleansing and nurturing of his Word we are made holy and ready at his coming. (II Peter 3:14-18) Paul describes how Christ prepares his bride for that day, “By the washing of the water by the word.” (Ephesians 5:2527) I see the hand of Jesus pouring out pure water on the church. Raise your arms and ask him to wash you with the pure water of his Word. Are you ready and looking for the coming Day of the Lord? Open House at Caritas Family Solutions office in Mt. Vernon Caritas Family Solutions, a nonprofit social service agency based in Belleville, Ill., will host a Ribbon Cutting and Open House Wednesday, July 31, 11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m. at the new location for its Regional Office in Mt. Vernon located at 321 S. 10th St. The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce and Mt. Vernon Mayor John Lewis will be present to mark the occasion, followed by an open house to meet staff and learn about the agency. Light refreshments will be served. The ribbon cutting is the focus of the third annual Caritas Day, a day of giving to celebrate the anniversary of Caritas Family Solutions becoming a nonprofit in the State of Illinois. The day honors and builds on the success of thousands of individuals, children and families who have been strengthened by the agency’s mission since July 31,1947. Caritas Day consists of 24 hours of support including online giving opportunities and volunteer projects at various Caritas service locations. Members of the community can also participate in

the Caritas Day Calendar Challenge, a daily giving calendar for the entire month of July, designed to make it fun for donors to collect items for distribution to those in need. For more information and a copy of the calendar, visit caritasfamilysolutions.org/ caritascalendar. The regional office moved to the new location in April 2019 because more space was needed to house 50 employees who provide services to almost 350 youth in foster care, their families and foster families. The new building not only provides more space but also a safe and welcoming environment for the increasing numbers of children and families in the region seeking social and emotional well-being.
