Welcome two cartoon character balloons to Balloon Fest 2019 Thanks to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital and SSM Health Medical Staff you are in for a treat when these two popular look alike cartoon balloons inflate in Foundation Park during the 30th Annual Balloon Festival on August 16, 17 & 18. Adults and kids alike will enjoy seeing Puddy Cat and Yellow Bird side-by-side. Puddy Cat was built in February 2019 and has only appeared at 3 balloon festivals so far this year. He has a 6 foot long yellow feather hanging from his mouth that he plucked right off of Yellow Bird. That’s as close as he has ever come to eating Yellow Bird. Yellow Bird is a 77,000 cubic ft. envelope and Puddy Cat is a 90,000 cubic foot envelope. Bring your family, friends, lawn chairs and cameras to Foundation Park for Balloon Fest 2019!

St. Mary Catholic Church held its annual vacation Bible school July 22 –July 25. The program taught this year was The Groundskeeper. Each evening began with a Bible story and discussion of what was read with the children. In another part of the program, the children completed a craft project based on the story of the day. Then the children participated in games outdoors. The children practiced each evening a song that they sang to their parents and grandparents on the last evening of VBS. At the end of each evening the children enjoyed a snack. The children were given goodie bags to take home on the last evening.

The Centralia Rotary Club met on Monday, July 22 at noon at the Elks Club. President Jay Luse began the meeting. President Luse held a short business meeting and then introduced Nancy Peoples as the speaker. Nancy did a “Classification Talk.” This

is a talk where members talk about themselves and their lives. It is designed to let everyone get to know all of the members better. The meeting ended with the Four Way Test, Pledge and Prayer. A group of members then proceeded to Rotary

Park to look at the new batting cages that were the project of last year’s President, Tina Suarez. Pictured (L to R) Left to right are Becky Ault, Scott Allan, Tina Suarez, Jay Luse, Jim Shain, Chris Lyons, Ben Stratmeyer, and Tom Kasten.

Volunteers needed for cleanup evening in Centralia A cleanup evening in Centralia is being planned on Wednesday, August 14. “Since we will be having thousands of visitors for the upcoming Balloon Fest, we want our city to look it’s best,” said Bev Virobik, who is organizing the cleanup event.

Everyone who wants to help is invited to pick up litter, especially on the top east and west roadways which the balloonists will take from the new motel to the park. The more people who help, the less time the project will take. Volunteers will meet at

Centralia City Hall at 6:00 p.m. Bags, tongs and gloves will be provided. If you are interested, just show up at City Hall by 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14. For more information please call Bev Virobik at 5328430.

Back To The Grill It's back to the grill! Hint! Hint! This week hot off the grill enjoy a colorful outdoor meal of skewered beef and corn with green peppers, red onions and pineapple.

Skewered Beef and Corn 4 lb. boneless chuck roast Unsalted meat tenderizer Pineapple-Wine Marinade 1/4 cup butter or margarine, melted 1/4 cup salad oil About 5 medium-size ears corn, husked and cut into 2-inch lengths Pineapple-Wine Marinade: 1½ cups canned pineapple juice 1½ cups dry red wine 1½ T. instant minced onion 1½ tsp. Worcestershire 1½ tsp. thyme leaves

3 medium-size green bell peppers, seeded and cut into 1½" squares 2 large mild red onions, cut into 1½" pieces 1 medium-size pineapple (about 3½ lbs.), peeled, cored, and cut into 1½" cubes

3/4 tsp. dry mustard 1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar 1/4 tsp. pepper 2 cloves garlic (minced or pressed)

Cut meat crosswise into steaks about 1½" thick. Then apply tenderizer according to package directions. Cut meat into 1½" cubes and place in large bowl. To prepare PineappleWine Marinade, in bowl, stir together all marinade ingredients. Pour marinade over meat; stir to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 6 hours or until next day, stirring occasionally. In small bowl, stir together butter, oil, and 1/3 cup of marinade drained from meat; set aside. Discard remaining marinade. On long, sturdy metal skewers, thread meat alternately with corn, bell peppers, onions and pineapple. Brush all over with butter mixture. Place skewers on lightly greased grill 4 to 6" above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning and basting frequently with butter mixture, until meat is done to your liking; cut to test (about 15 minutes for medium-rare). Makes about 8 servings.

East-West Grilled Steak 1 to 2 T. salad oil 4 beef tenderloin steaks (8 to 10 oz. each), cut about 1½" thick 1/4 tsp. coarsely ground pepper 1 T. minced parsley

1 tsp. each rubbed sage, dry rosemary, and thyme leaves 2 T. soy sauce 1 T. oyster sauce 2 tsp. each sugar and brandy

Rub oil on both sides of each steak to coat evenly. In small bowl, combine pepper, parsley, sage, rosemary, and thyme; rub mixture into both sides of each steak. In 9" square pan, stir together soy, oyster sauce, sugar and brandy until sugar is dissolved. Turn steaks in soy mixture, one at a time, coating evenly. Set steaks side by side in pan; cover and refrigerate at least 2 hours or up to 4 hours. Place steaks on lightly greased grill 4 to 6" above a solid bed of medium coals. Cook, turning as needed, until browned on both sides and done to your liking; cut to test (about 20 minutes for rare). Brush any remaining soy mixture over steaks as they cook. Makes 4 servings.

Skewered Beef with Apple and Lettuce 1 piece fresh ginger (about a 1" cube), minced 1/4 cup soy sauce 2 T. each dry white wine and firmly packed brown sugar 1 T. sesame seeds 1½ tsp. sesame oil

1 to 1½ T. chili oil or 1/2 tsp. ground red pepper (cayenne) 2 lbs. boneless beef chuck, trimmed of excess fat and cut into 1½" cubes 1 large apple, cored and sliced Butter lettuce leaves

In bowl, stir together ginger, soy, wine, sugar, sesame seeds, sesame oil and chili oil. Add beef and stir to coat evenly with soy mixture. Cover and refrigerate 1 to 2 hours. Lift meat cubes from marinade and drain briefly (reserve marinade); thread meat equally on 4 sturdy metal skewers. Place skewers on lightly greased grill 4 to 6 inches above a solid bed of hot coals. Cook, turning as needed and basting often with marinade, until well browned on all sides and done to your liking; cut to test (about 15 minutes for medium-rare). Push meat off skewers onto platter. To eat, wrap meat and apple slices in lettuce leaves; eat out of hand. Makes 4 to 6 servings. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. Balloon Fest 2019 Major Sponsors Every year the Greater Centralia Chamber of Commerce and the volunteer Balloon Fest Committee members work hard to bring Balloon Fest to our community, but they can’t do it alone. Along with all the hard work that comes with organizing an event of this size, someone has to step up to the plate and donate products, services, and money to support it. Some donors sponsor balloons, balloon pilots, or specific activities; some

make small monetary donations; others make very large donations. It all adds up, but the sponsors are critical to the success of the event. Pictured here are some of the major sponsors of Balloon Fest 2019. Be sure to thank them for their contribution to this year’s edition of the annual funfilled family-oriented festival we know as Balloon Fest. Up first, the Mueller Show. If it had been a real TV show it would have been canceled right after the first episode... nothing but a poor performance for the main character and poor rating for lack of viewers. The producers, the House Democrats, are still crying in their beer. The national media even graded the day with an “F.” If you did watch part of it yourself, you saw the Republicans tear apart Mueller and the 440+ page book he personally didn’t write. “The book” was divided into Volume 1 — Russian Collusion and Volume 2 — 180 pages of rambling on possible obstructions of justice. Republican congressmen Jim Jordan, Matt Gaetz, John Ratcliffe, Louie Gohmert and others drilled Mueller on “his” or someone’s report, page by page. Jordan noted from the “book” that charges for lying were filed against everyone interviewed and connected to the President, but no charges were filed for lying three times to the M u e l l e r Te a m b y Christopher Steele, who released the original dossier that started this whole thing. Mueller claimed he d i d n’t k n o w G l e n n Simpson, co-founder of the research firm who created the dossier and Mueller appeared to not know of Simpson’s firm, Fusion GPS that created the dossier. Mueller claimed that investigating the origin of the dossier was not in his purview. Really? Congressman Ratcliffe, the new nominee for director of national intelligence, pointed out that it was not

in the special counselor’s purview to exonerate or not exonerate but to provide a report, because in our justice system forever is the presumption of innocence u nt i l prove n g u i lt y. “The President is not above the law, but he’s also not below it.” According to many Rep u b l i c a n s , At t or n e y General William Barr is now pursuing those who created, released or lied about the infamous dossier. Next up, the next series of Democratic debates. Let’s see how “equal time” is given to the minor candidates! Previous debates, although there was little debating, gave everyone the chance to present their policies. Lacking was “the how” their ideas could be enacted. One of Bernie Sanders’ ideas is for the government to pay off all student debt ($1.6 trillion). When asked recently why he would pay off the debt of those who could afford it, he deflected the question and said that most student debt is from the struggling working class or those who simply can’t pay it themselves. Read this Sanders idea as “Can I buy your vote?” Okay, so how about these giveaways from the other candidates: 1) Anyone who paid off their debt in the last 10 years will receive a full refund. 2) Everyone that travels mass transit daily, instead of driving a car, will be entitled to a $5,000 yearly government bonus, since they aren’t polluting the environment. 3) Perhaps the universi-

ties and colleges in the U.S. can forgive some of the debt and receive a government subsidy. Okay so I made these vote-getting propositions up. Enough about buying votes, let’s move on to Trump’s Inflammatory Tweet of the Week! A President Trump outspoken nemesis, Elijah Cummings condemns Trump on a daily basis. This time the President shot back that Cummings, through his many years in Congress, could have and should have helped his home district (Baltimore area) improve. Up next, the two year budget deal. $320 billion over budget caps. Did anybody mention the new budget deal worked out between Democrats and Republicans before they went on a six-week vacation? Sorry, they call it recess, and that fits because many times you would think a bunch of kids are running our government. Their budget deal says they won’t spend more than $320 billion over their previous cap, and funding for what and how much is still to be decided. According to Karl Rove, expect at least 13 appropriations bills in the coming months as everyone tries to grab their share of the money. It should make for some good TV. Until next week. No person, apart from Jesus Christ, shaped the history of Christianity like the apostle Paul. Paul’s personal encounter with Jesus changed his life and God used him to spread the gospel and advance the kingdom of God throughout the world. The three keys that changed Paul’s life can change and empower our lives. PAUL’S CONVERSION EXPERIENCE. Before Paul met the resurrected, living Christ on the Damascus road, he was known as Saul. He was a zealous Jew who hated Christians and hunted them down with threats and murderous rage. (Acts 9) When Jesus Christ appeared to him in a blinding light, he heard the voice of the risen Savior and asked, “Who are you, Lord?” (Acts 9:5) Paul acknowledged Jesus as Lord, confessed his sin, surrendered his life to Christ and determined to obey Jesus. Paul became a new man. (II Corinthians 5:17) He realized the law could not make him righteous but only believ-

ing in Jesus’ work on the cross could make him righteousness. “For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes.” (Romans 10:1-4) Have you confessed Christ as your Savior and Lord? “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised his from the dead, you will be saved.” (Romans 10:9-10) PAUL’S LIFE CHANGING PRAYER. Paul prayed a prayer and asked a question that was not only a key to his success but can optimize our fruitfulness for God. When Paul realized who Jesus was, he asked a question in prayer form. “Lord, what do you want me to do?” (Acts 9:6) The Lord gave Paul immediate and specific instructions. When Paul obeyed, God intervened in and through his life. This prayer is a standard operating procedure for those who would be used of God. Sometimes God’s word to us is simple. A friend said that he prayed this prayer and God gave —“LOVE.” When he obeyed, miraculous things happened. Paul was blinded by the light from heaven. He was led by the hand into Damascus and waited for God to instruct him. I came across this acronym for WAIT. W — Watch God work in his way; A

— Ask God about his purposes; I — Invite God to work in your heart; T — Trust God to fulfill his plans. When God tells you what to do — obey! God will manifest his power and glory. Pray this prayer daily and often. PAUL’S ENCOUNTER W I T H T H E HOLY SPIRIT. After Paul’s conversion and prayer, God spoke to a disciple named Ananias in a vision and gave him specific instructions to go to the house where Paul was and pray for him. At the same time Paul had a vision of Ananias coming to pray for him! “And Ananias ... laying his hands on him, said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road ... has sent me that you may receive your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” (Acts 9:10-18) Paul was immediately filled with the Holy Spirit and then was baptized in water. Paul would later lead multitudes to the Lord and pray for them to be filled with the Holy Spirit. (Acts 19:6) Jesus said, “You shall receive power after the Holy Spirit comes upon you and you will be witnesses unto me.” (Acts 1:8; Luke 11:13) The Power of the Holy Spirit will change and super-charge your life. Do you desire to see God’s life-changing power operating in and through your life? Pray Paul’s prayer, “Lord, what do you want me to do?” Listen and obey.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Your honesty is, as always, admirable. But you might want to be more tactful in discussing a sensitive issue with a family member. Remember: You can give advice without giving offense. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) An unexpected workplace snag should be handled quickly and efficiently so that it leaves you time for family gettogethers. Also, you might soon get that long-sought apology. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Aspects favor family matters, especially where children might be involved. Spending time with loved ones helps restore some much-needed balance to your typically busy schedule. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That seemingly clear-cut agreement might not be quite so straightforward after all. Recheck for language that could make you liable for hidden costs and other unpleasant surprises. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Careful, Kitty. Better to deal with someone with proven reliability than with a big talker who promises much but can’t confirm that he or she will deliver. Your social life really zings this weekend. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Your matchmaking skills are at peak performance levels both in helping to staff workplace teams for upcoming projects and for bringing people together on a more personal basis. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You’re finally seeing some progress with your new venture. But be

prepared for it to continue at a slower pace than you’re used to. Meanwhile, a loved one could be preparing a surprise. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A family member’s success pulls you into the spotlight as well. Enjoy it, but don’t let it overshadow or otherwise obstruct what you’re doing with your own creative projects. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Using what you already know might not be quite enough to get a proposed project off the ground. Look for any new information that might help tilt the scales in your favor. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Good news: While a changing workplace environment can be daunting for some, it could be the challenge you’ve been hoping for. If so, confront it with confidence and move on. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) It’s a good time to recheck travel arrangements for any changes that could work to your advantage. Aspects also favor strengthening and restoring old, fraying relationships. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Using your intuitive reasoning helps you cut right through the double-talk and go straight to what’s really going on around you. Stay the course until all your questions are answered. BORN THIS WEEK: You radiate light and warmth, and others love being close to you. Š 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
