Plan now to attend the 48th Little Egypt Festival October 5

Now in its 48th year, the Little Egypt Festival is Salem’s tradition of recognizing its status as the “Gateway to Little Egypt.” Early settlers in this region recognized the similarities of this area to the land of Egypt, with its confluence of rivers and rich soils for agriculture. The Little Egypt Festival is always held on the first Saturday of October in downtown Salem, which is October 5 this year, and includes food and craft vendors, activities for kids, a 5K run, a horse show, Big Wheel races, a car show in Bryan

Memorial Park, and the big parade at 2 p.m. As always, the festival is at the mercy of Mother Nature; adverse weather sometimes takes its toll, but generally, it usually turns out to be a very nice day. This year’s festival is once again being held in conjunction with the Marion County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Reunion, which will hold a dinner Friday evening, parade activities on Saturday, and then entertainment in the park on Sunday.

More information related to the Reunion is available on the Marion County Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Reunion page on Facebook. This year’s Little Egypt Festival event schedule is: 7:00 a.m. Car show registration starts in Bryan Memorial Park. 8:00 a.m. Vendor and food area opens. 9:00 a.m. Kids Zone opens, featuring carnival style games, photo props, pony rides, cupcake walk, etc.

10:00 a.m. Big Wheel Race (West Schwartz St.). 12:00 p.m. Broadway & Main St. will close. 1:00 p.m. Horse Show (Franklin Park School). 12:30 p.m. 5K Run. Register at Salem Community Theater before race. 2:00 p.m. 48th Annual Little Egypt Festival Parade. 5:00 p.m. Vendor and food area close. Come join in the fun.

The circus has come to town! Crazy Washington, especially many in The House of Representatives, has once again renewed my faith that it’s all a show to them and they have no intention of getting significant legislation on infrastructure, healthcare, etc. passed. Their lives revolve around investigations. Two and a half years wasted with the Mueller investigation and now the next year plus on impeachment inquiries of six separate committees, and whatever comes next. True to form, Speaker Nancy Pelosi, (just like years ago with her signature line, “We’ve got to pass this bill so we can see what’s in it,”) decided to launch an impeachment inquir y because of President Trump’s phone call with the Ukraine leader before the

Lincoln Presidential Library Grants

State Representative Blaine Wilhour (R-Beecher City) is helping to promote the transportation grants available for 4th through 12th grade students in Illinois to visit the Abraham L incoln Presidential Librar y and Museum (ALPLM) in Springfield. The grants can be up to $1,500 and must be applied for by October 15 and be used between January 2 through December 21, 2020. “Our students are fortunate to live within driving distance to the Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and teachers who

would like to incorporate this museum trip into their lesson plans involving history should apply,” expl aine d R ep. Bl aine Wilhour. “I would also encourage schools to make a trip to the Historic Vandalia State House here in the 107th District where notable people like Lincoln actually served in the Illinois legislature between 1836 and 1839.” With the generous support from the Winnick Family Foundation, the Abraham Lincoln President i a l L ibrar y Foundation provides grant funding for field trips to the

ALPLM for grades 4-12. Grants cover transportation costs for public and private schools with a lowincome enrollment of greater than 30 percent. Students will be able to learn about Abraham Lincoln’s life, times, and legacy, as well as issues that have changed the course of Illinois and American history. The application and guidelines can be found on-line at https://www2. illinois.gov/alplm/ museum/Education/ D o c uments/2019%20 Winnick%20Grant%20 App.pdf.

actual transcript from the White House was released to Congress. And then Intel Committee Chair “Shifty” Adam Schiff in the opening remarks of the Intel Committee meeting “jokingly” recited his “godfather” version of the phone transcript. Later in the meeting he had to explain he was not reading from the transcript, but doing a parody of it. Well, that got me to thinking... How did Speaker Pelosi, who had been opposed to impeachment politically, suddenly decide to do the impeachment inquiry? Did a powerful leader in Congress “convince” her to begin the impeachment process?

The South Central FFA Members recently participated in the 2019 Elite Conference on September 19. The event was held at Heartland Community College in Bloomington. Donors of all blood types needed

The American Red Cross urges people of all races and ethnicities to give blood or platelets to help increase the diversity of the blood supply. The vast majority of blood types fall into one of the major blood groups. However, for patients with rare blood types or those who receive regular blood transfusions, blood must be matched closely – beyond the primary A, B, O and AB blood types – to reduce the risk of developing complications from transfusion therapy. The b est match may b e someone of the same racial or ethnic group. Eight-year-old AJ Torres requires blood transfusions to treat complications from sickle cell disease, the most common genetic disease in the U.S. The disease is most common among people of African descent or Latino descent, like AJ, and can sometimes cause small blood vessels to become blocked. Diverse donors are important to ensuring AJ has the blood products he needs to regain his health. “Within minutes of receiving a blood transfusion, I watch his strength be restored, pain vanish and energy return. Soon he transforms back to himself – a rambunctious little boy,” said his mom, Caira Torres. “If an 8-yearold can withstand a needle, so can you.” Donors of all blood types, as well as all races and ethnicities, are needed to meet the needs of an increasingly diverse p at i e nt p opu l at i on . Appointments can be made by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting R e d C ro s s B l o o d . o r g , calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device. As a thank-you, those who come to give blood or platelets during the month of October will automatically be entered for a chance to win one of five $500 gift cards redeemable at hundreds of merchants, courtesy of Tango Card. In the news from SINA from last week’s meeting, President Mike Chambers introduced Bud Davis from the Mt. Vernon Yacht Club. Davis originally started a yacht club in Florida when he lived there, then came back to the area and started the Mt. Vernon Yacht Club because he enjoys helping others make memories. And what a fun way to

share with your family and friends (kids from 2 to 99), to come and play with motorized yachts. In the recent past Davis (better known as the Commodore) has had his boats at the Veterans Memorial Park as well as C e d arhu rst and t he Centralia Balloon Fest. Starting the first of October, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. on Saturdays only, the motor-

ized boats can be found at the Centralia Recreation Complex for all to enjoy and will continue through March. The Commodore is also hoping to expand in this area this coming summer as well as be in Mt. Vernon. For further information you can go to Mt. “And saying repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand . . . and were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.” (Matthew 3:2, 6) Recently I had the blessing of baptizing six young ladies in the Salt River. They came out of life controlling addictions and found freedom in Christ. One young lady testified that when she came up out of the water, she felt so clean and refreshed. Of course, it wasn’t the baptismal waters that washed their sins away, but repentance and faith in the atoning blood of Jesus shed on the cross. The New Testament speaks of seven baptisms: 1) John’s baptism in the water of repentance (Matthew 3; Acts 19:3); 2) Christ’s baptism in water; 3) baptism in suffering (Luke 12:50); 4) baptism in the cloud and the sea (I Corinthians 10:2); 5) Christian baptism in water (Matthew 28:19; Acts 2:3841); 6) baptism into Christ

Going Down to the River to be Baptized I love the bluegrass music in the movie “Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?” In the movie, there are some convicts who escape from a prison chain gang. On their journey home they come across a water baptism service at a river. One of the convicts becomes convicted of his sins and jumps in the river and baptizes himself. The movie is a take off on the classic book “The Iliad and the Odyssey.” It also portrays a group of women singing “Going down to the river to be baptized.” They are like the sirens in Greek mythology, which I interpret as the pull of the sinful nature in all of us. John the Baptist points us to the only answer to freedom from the power of the sinful nature, “The next day, John saw Jesus coming unto him and said, “Behold the Lamb of God, which takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29)

Is the shingles vaccine necessary?

Doctors, pharmacies and walk-in medical centers now offer more vaccinations than just the standard flu shot. People have the opportunity to get vaccinated against chickenpox as well as an offshoot of that illness known as shingles. But is the shingles vaccine necessary? And if so, why? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says one in three people in the United States will develop shingles in his or her lifetime. Shingles, also known as zoster or herpes zoster, is caused by the varicella zoster virus. This is the same virus responsible for chickenpox. Anyone who has had chickenpox is susceptible to having shingles years later. That's because, despite being inactive, the virus remains in the body. Although doctors are not sure why, the varicella

zoster virus can reactivate, causing shingles, which have different and more severe symptoms than chickenpox. It is important to note that herpes zoster is not caused by the same virus that causes genital herpes. Unlike chickenpox, which is characterized by itchy pustules that spread across the body, shingles generally begins as a very painful burning rash on one side of the body or face. The rash forms blisters that will scab in about a week. Prior to the presentation of the rash, the skin may itch and men and women may feel pain and tingling feelings in the area where the rash will develop. Unless a person has a weakened immune system, the rash will usually be in one banded area of the body. Otherwise, it could be more widespread like the

chickenpox rash. Shingles is not contagious in the obvious sense, meaning a person with shingles will not give another person shingles. However, the shingles virus can be spread to another person who has never had chickenpox. Chickenpox may develop, but shingles will not. Because the shingles rash is often in areas of the body concealed by clothing, transmission to others is rare. After the shingles blisters have scabbed over, a person can no longer pass on the zoster virus. Shingles occurs later in life, primarily after a person has reached his or her 50s. Therefore, the CDC recommends the shingles vaccine (Zostavax) for individuals age 60 and older. The vaccine will protect the body against the reactivation of the zoster virus. It also may help those who

have never had chickenpox from contracting chickenpox. The vaccine isn't failsafe, though. In some cases, even vaccinated people will still experience shingles, although the outbreak may be less severe than if the shingles vaccine was never received. The vaccine, which requires just a single dose, transmits a live virus as a single injection in the upper arm. Redness, pain, swelling, and headaches are known side effects. The vaccine is safe for most individuals. However, those who have a weakened immune system, are receiving immune-system-suppressing drugs, have tuberculosis, are pregnant or trying to become pregnant or have had a life-threatening allergic reaction to any of the ingredients in the shingles vaccine should not be vaccinated.

Burning back pain and tingling could be indicative of shingles. Even those who have had shingles before are urged to get the vaccine to prevent future occurrences. It is important for people to

discuss their treatment options with their doctors and also to inquire if their medical insurance covers the shingles vaccine.

Which doctor to see and when

Women who split their health management among different doctors may not know which doctor to turn to when their health comes into question. They may ask themselves, "Is this issue best addressed by a family doctor or a gynecologist?" Answers to such questions depend on personal preferences and the type of condition you're looking to treat. Family do c tors or general practitioners may be qualified to provide many of the screenings and services for which a woman may visit a gynecologist or women's health practice. Such doctors can perform routine pelvic examinations, oversee screenings for cervical cancer and conduct breast exams to check for lumps and other abnormalities, just like a woman's specialty doctor may run tests to calculate body mass index or check for cholesterol levels. A woman who feels more comfortable with one specific doctor may see him or her for a variety of health concerns, provided that doctor offers certain services. However, there are instances when certain healthcare questions are best answered by specialists. The following information can help women determine which doctor to see when certain situations arise. • Annual physicals: Gynecologists and family doctors can conduct physical examinations. Both can order blood lab tests and urinalysis to check cholesterol levels and for any vitamin deficiencies. Heart rate, blood pressure, weight, and height are other screenings that can be handled at either office. • Bacterial and yeast infections or urinary tract infections: A general practitioner or gynecologist can address these infections. However, some women feel more comfortable discussing genital issues with their gynecologists. A gynecolo-

gist may be more experienced at identifying problems and ordering appropriate follow-up exams. A family doctor may not require an examination unless you request it and may treat broad symptoms. • Colds and coughs: In theory, a gynecologist may be able to diagnose and treat common health ailments. But the majority of a gynecologist's work concerns the female reproductive system, so common colds and coughs are best left to general practitioners who diagnose respiratory and bronchial conditions daily. • Mood disorders: If changes in mood seem to stem from hormones or the result of a pregnancy, a gynecologist or obstetrician may have treatment options available that can alleviate specific triggers. Many women initially turn to a family doctor if they are experiencing depression or changes in mood or behavior. Both a family doctor or a gynecologist may refer a patient to a mental health specialist if the situation seems to warrant more

action. Nutrition and weight loss: Many patients see a family doctor to seek advice on adopting a healthy diet. Some medical offices have a nutritionist on staff who can offer food counseling and exercise advise. • Infertility: It is best to visit a gynecologist or obstetrician to talk about any infertility issues. Such doctors have more intimate knowledge of the female reproductive system and could be more learned regarding the latest therapies and studies pertaining to fertility. • Cancer screening: PAP tests and breast exams can be performed at either doctor's office, although patients may feel more comfortable if a gynecologist performs these screenings. It is important to note that not all gynecologists are obstetricians. Some handle women's reproductive issues but do not deliver children. Patients who prefer a doctor knowledgeable about reproductive health and won't be busy handling child deliveries should select a gynecologist.

Don't Be Burned By Poor Fever Advice

Elevated body temperature, also known as fever, makes many people run to the medicine cabinet. This is especially true when fever strikes a young child and parents’ concerns grow. But fevers are quite common and not nearly as harmful as many people may think. Although illnesses may bring about fevers that can be life-threatening, including malaria and dengue, more run-of-the-mill fevers are typically triggered by common bacterial or viral infections or even inflammatory conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, offers The Mayo Clinic. Sometimes the cause of a

fever can’t be identified, but that is not necessarily cause for alarm. Fevers are a natural immune response. The purpose of a fever is to gain an advantage over an infectious agent by making the body less favorable for the spread of this agent, whether it’s a virus or bacterium. Many infectious agents are temperaturesensitive and require the right mix of conditions to be able to become profligate consumers of the body’s resources. The hypothalmus is the body’s internal thermostat and will be triggered by biochemical substances in the blood alerting the body to the presence

of a potential invader. The body then will retain and generate more heat to essentially kill off that invader. According to the Internal Me d i c i ne R e s i d e nc y Prog ram at Indi ana University, because children have immature and novice immune systems, they tend to get higher fevers more quickly than adults. As children age and their bodies learn and adapt, fevers typically are not nearly as severe. This may be a reason why a child’s high fever is less of a concern than the same fever in an adult. Normal body temperature fluctuates during the

day, but a temperature from about 97 F (36.1 C) to 99 F (37.2 C) generally is considered “normal.” Adults should only be concerned if a fever is high-grade, reaching 104 F or more. Such fevers are considered dangerous. Chronic fevers, or those persisting for longer than three to four days, also should be checked out by a physician. Watching how a person behaves may indicate whether he or she is ill enough to necessitate a doctor visit. Infants should always be checked by a doctor if they have a fever because it could be a sign of a serious infection. Low-grade fevers gener-

Smarter ways to manage menopause Did you ever wonder whether cavewomen went through menopause? The answer is no. Why not? Because their life expectancies were too short. But for those of us who live long enough (typically beyond the age of 50), menopause is a fact of life. The good news is we know more about menopause and its symptoms and have more and better options for managing it than ever before. Part of the reason we know more is that, finally, menopause has come out of the closet. Thanks to such organizat ions as The Nor t h American Menopause Society (NAMS), not only is there more information available, but women are actually encouraged to talk about their symptoms and share their menopause experiences with their clinicians as well as with their

colleagues and friends. Simply Google "menopause" and you'll find volumes of information on the subject. One of the more frequently visited sites is menopause.org, which contains scientifically based information designed to help women make smarter health care decisions, not only about menopause, but also about other common midlife women's health issues. "Women have more choices today than ever when it comes to managing their menopause symptoms," says Dr. Wulf Utian, executive director for NAMS. "However, more options can sometimes lead to more confusion. And that's why we encourage women to have open dialogues with their clinicians from whom they can obtain facts, not myths. That's also why NAMS recently

updated "The Menopause Guidebook." Now in its e i g ht h e d i t i o n , t h e Guidebook provides a comprehensive look at menopause by providing answers to commonly asked questions, as well as tips for best management practices." Because the Guidebook was created by medical practitioners who specialize in the study and management of menopause, it provides practical and proven recommendations that reflect the latest medical advances and scientific studies. In it, women will learn about: • The benefits and risks associated with hormone therapy • Information on nonhormone and hormone options used to manage symptoms such as hot flashes • Treatment options for the genitourinary syn-

drome of menopause (GSM), the thinning of the vaginal walls that can, among other problems, lead to painful sexual intercourse and decreased desire • The latest FDAapproved options for managing menopause symptoms • Risks associated with the use of bioidentical and compounded hormones, which are not regulated or approved by the FDA • Prevention techniques and strategies for managing a wide array of common health problems during a woman's midlife, including osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. • The latest nonpharmacologic solutions and products for hot flashes, as well as lifestyle changes that have proven effective in lessening hot flashes and night sweats. "Women have tradition-

How to lower blood-sugar levels without medication Diabetes is a disorder in which the body cannot properly store and use the energy found in food. To be more specific, diabetes compromises the body’s ability to use glucose. Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease in which the body wrongly identifies and then attacks pancreatic cells, which causes little to no insulin production. Those with type 1 diabetes usually must rely on insulin shots to remain healthy. Type 2 diabetes involves insulin resistance or insufficient insulin production and is the more common form of diabetes. The pancreas may still produce insulin, but not enough to meet the demands of the body. Insulin resistance occurs in some cases because a consistent high bloodglucose level causes cells to be overexposed to insulin and then makes cells less responsive or immune to its effects. Diabetes treatment can include a combination of strategies, including the following nondrug remedies. Diet Diabetics can work with their doctors and nutritionists to come up with a diet that will be most effective. Some advocate for eating foods that are low in carbohydrates or ones with a low glycemic index. Others say that it is more important to restrict caloric intake rather than sugar intake. Work with a professional to create a healthy diet and follow it as closely as possible. Eat meals at the same

time each day so you can better regulate blood-sugar spikes and lulls. Skipping meals may cause you to overeat later in the day, which can throw glucose levels off-kilter. Exercise Many people with type 2 diabetes are carrying around extra weight. Exercise can help them shed pounds and maintain healthier weights. But exercise does more than just help you lose weight. The Joslin Diabetes Center says strength training exercises are an important component of workouts. By maintaining lean muscle mass, you can get rid of a larger amount of glucose in the bloodstream, thus helping manage diabetes in the process. Get at least 20 to 30 minutes of moderate activity several days per week. Supplementation Some people find that certain natural ingredients can help regulate bloodsugar levels. For example, pure, organic apple cider vinegar taken over time can help people with diabetes manage their blood-sugar levels more effectively. A small amount of cinnamon per day may be able to reduce fasting glucose levels by anywhere from 18 to 29 percent, according to a study in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. Always speak with a doctor before trying any home remedies to treat diabetes or exploring any alternatives to traditional diabetes treatments.

ally do not require any medicine, and taking a fever-reducer may prolong the underlying illness or mask the cause of it. Give the body a chance to fight the foreign invader before reaching for acetaminop h e n or i b uprof e n . Physicians may advise avoiding fever-lowering

drugs for temperatures of 102 F (38.9 C) or lower. Always call a doctor if you need clarification on medication dosage and other fever recommendations. Fevers can be scary, but they are just one of many ways the human body defends itself against illness.

ally viewed menopause as a dreaded phase of their lives and believed they had little control over it," says Dr. Utian. "However, through resources such as the menopause.org website and the Guidebook, we are looking to educate and empower women so that

they can better control their symptoms and actually thrive during this life stage. The more women know about what is happening to their bodies and understand their options, the better choices they can make about treatment and lifestyle." (BPT)

Seasonal Sight

Last Sunday the Centralia Masons helped put up pumpkin faces on lightposts throughout the downtown Centralia area and along the route of the 93rd annual Centralia Halloween Parade. The parade will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday evening, October 26, following a day of family fun at the Centralia Fall Festival in downtown Centralia. The Festival will feature a craft fair and flea market at the C entralia Recreation Complex, free children’s games and activities, a chili cook-off, a car show, local entertainment, food, contests, and the Children’s Halloween Parade, which begins at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday morning. For more information about the festivities call 618-533-5602 or visit centraliahpff.org.

Cooking With Lizzie

Meat Main Courses I still love my time in the kitchen. However, I catch myself always looking for new and exciting recipes to add spice to life around the dining room table for my family. Recently I’ve been focused on new ways to serve the main course, starting with meat, and below are some new recipes. Some I’ve already tried and loved as well as some I’m looking forward to making and serving.

93rd annual Centralia Halloween Parade fundraiser

By Cathy Stuehmeier The 93rd annual C entralia Halloween Parade is scheduled for Saturday, October 26 this year. The Centralia parade is by far the oldest tradition in Centralia, and each year it takes money to put this exciting event on. Every year the commit-

tee sells buttons to raise funds. This year there’s something brand new to underwrite the parade. My lifelong dear friend Centralian Jay Borum designed a special coloring book celebrating the 93rd 2019 Halloween Parade. It’s the official souvenir for this

Social Security. “This will provide fast, secure, and more efficient SSN verifications for the financial services industry and customers using their services. Social Security is creating eCBSV, a fee-based electronic SSN verification service, to allow select financial institutions and service providers, called “permitted entities and including subsidiaries, affiliates, agents, subcontractors, or assignees of a financial institution, to verify if a person’s SSN, name, and date of birth combination matches Social Security records. Social Security needs the person’s written consent and will accept an electronic signature in

New electronic social security number veriďŹ cation service

The Social Security Administration announced last month that the first potential group of selected participants for its new electronic Consent Based Social Security Number (SSN) Verification (eCBSV) service. The agency will roll out the service to these users in June 2020, and plans on expanding the number of users within approximately six months of the initial rollout. “Our new electronic SSN verification service will help to reduce synthetic identity fraud by comparing data provided electronically by approved participants with the agency’s records, said Andrew Saul, Commissioner of

ID Analytics, LLC; Navy Federal Credit Union; SentiLink Corp.; Synchrony Financial. Each of the service providers selected can serve up to 20 permitted entities, with the potential of 124 permitted entities participating in the initial rollout. This announcement does not affect the existing C ons e nt B as e d S SN Verification service. For more information, see www.socialsecurity. gov/dataexchange/eCBSV/.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Travel plans could be interrupted by the re-emergence of a workplace problem that was never quite fully resolved. Deal with it at once, and then take off on that well-deserved trip. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Aspects favor cultural activities for sensuous Bovines. Attend a concert or an art show. Better yet, create something yourself (a poem, perhaps?), and dedicate it to someone special. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Respect any doubts you might now be feeling about a new situation. They could be reflecting your inner awareness that some essential information might be missing. Check it out. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s important to start the new month with as clean a slate as possible. Either complete all those unfinished tasks or pass them on to others who would be more than happy to take them on. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This is a good time to cut down on expenses and tame that urge to splurge. Applying some financial discipline now could help the Big Cat ride out a possible monetary crunch later on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Money matters are dominant this week. Recheck your accounts and make sure they’re up-to-date. Also, pay more attention to personal issues before they become major problems. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) You might be tempted to employ the same tactics as your adversary, but that could backfire. Better to use the same balanced approach that

has worked for you before and could again. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) A changing workplace environment could stir up confusion as well as apprehension. Best to ignore the rumors and get the facts. You could find that the changes bring positive elements. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Communication is easier this week with people ready and eager to hear what you have to say. Also, check for possible technical problems before you start your new project. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Aspects favor change for the usually traditional Goat. Opening your mind to possibilities you had ignored could lead you to make decisions you once considered improbable. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Making personal as well as professional adjustments to changing conditions might be easier with more information explaining the “howsâ€? and “whysâ€? of the situations in question. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) With a growing tide of positive reactions to buoy your confidence, this could be the right time to put the finishing touches to your new project and get it well and truly launched. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for setting an example of quiet, calm reasoning in the midst of chaotic conditions. Š 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
