The Amy Schulz Child Advocacy Center The Amy Schulz Child Advocacy Center and its partners are the front-line responders to reports of sexual abuse, as well as reports of severe physical abuse of children. They provide children with a safe place to share their story in their own words with experts who listen to them, and help the healing process to begin. The Amy Center serves a seven-county region in Illinois: Clinton, Marion, Clay, Washington, Jefferson, Wayne and Hamilton. With the exception of their Stewards for Children program which requires a small fee, the CAC services are free of charge to every client and the CAC is a not-for-profit charitable organization. The Amy Center provides a warm, friendly, homelike environment just for children. An advocate is assigned to each child to act in the child’s best interest. They offer a child victim-sensitive room and a comprehensive referral system to provide therapy and support services. The center’s objectives are to reduce the number of interviews the child victim must endure; to coordinate and deliver services in an expeditious manner; and to offer support services for the victims and their families. The center conducts forensic interviews in a noninstitutional setting. Another objective of the center is a comprehensive prevention program on child abuse that

is offered to children in pre-school through high school and provides training and public speakers. The Amy Center provides valuable services in the communities they serve. To date they have provided services to over 5,358 children and their non-offending family members. They have presented prevention education programs to over 157,167 children and teens plus 19,133 adults. They also conduct an average of 180 forensic interviews a year. The center partners with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, National Children’s Alliance, Children’s Advocacy Centers of Illinois, the Attorney General, the Illinois Criminal Justice Information Authority, and United Way of South Central Illinois, plus local law enforcement in each of their seven counties and other local children’s service agencies. The Amy Schulz Child Advocacy Center is located at 500 Fairfield Rd., Mt. Vernon. They can be contacted at 618-244-2100, by email at amycenter90@hotmail. com or visit their website at www.amycenter.mvn.net To report child sexual abuse 24 hours a day call 1-800-25-ABUSE or your local law enforcement agency. All of the Amy Center staff are always there to assist you in any way that they can. We are so happy that we have such a great agency in our area.

1/4 cup tomato juice 8 slices American cheese

Break up beef with fork. Handling meat lightly, mix in salt, pepper and tomato juice. Gently form into 8 patties. Cook on lightly greased hot skillet. Place cut-out cheese slice on each patty and return to skillet to allow cheese to melt, cooking about 2 minutes longer. Serve open-face on hamburger buns or toasted English muffins. 8 servings. Trick or Treat

Let your imagination run free and put a fun face on Halloween. It's no trick to stir up these taste-tempting treats that are sure to please everyone. Start with an edible Halloween centerpiece.

Candied Apples 6 medium apples 6 wooden skewers or sticks 2 cups sugar

Halloween Pumpkin Cake 1/2 cup butter 1-1/2 cups sugar 3 eggs 1 tsp. vanilla 2 cups flour 1 tsp. baking powder 1 tsp. baking soda 1 tsp. cinnamon 1/2 tsp. ground ginger 1/4 tsp. ground cloves 1 cup canned pumpkin or fresh pumpkin puree 1/4 cup milk 1 cup chopped walnuts 3/4 cup raisins

2/3 cup light corn syrup 1 cup water Red food coloring

Wash and dry apples. Remove stem from each and insert wooden skewer securely in its place. In small heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and corn syrup in water over medium heat. Raise heat and boil rapidly until syrup reaches 300° on candy thermometer — the hard crack stage. (No thermometer? Drop a little of the mixture into very cold water; when removed, it will crack when tapped sharply.) Remove from heat and stir in enough food coloring to give a bright rosy color. Place saucepan in large pan of hot water. Holding each apple by its skewer, dip into syrup until completely coated; place on greased tray or cookie sheet to harden. 6 candied apples.

Entertainment Ideas • To create a unique Halloween decoration, select an assortment of dimensional characters and party favors and make a mobile. At the end of the party, give each guest an item from the mobile. • For a creative ghost story, seat children in a circle and give each one 30 seconds to add to a progressive ghost story. After the story, pass a sack of goodies and let each storyteller choose a treat.

Cream butter and sugar until fluffy. Beat in eggs and vanilla. Sift flour with baking powder, baking soda and spices; stir into butter mixture alternately with pumpkin, ending with flour. Stir in milk, walnuts and raisins. Pour batter into greased and floured 10" Bundt pan. Bake in preheated 350° oven 1 hour and 15 minutes or until cake tests done (stick toothpick into middle of cake; if it comes out clean, cake is done). Cool in pan 30 minutes, then turn out onto cake rack to finish cooling.

• Black crepe streamers can be part of your party decorations as well as a game. Before the party, wind several streamers of the same length around the room. (You'll need one for each child.) Start the streamers at different points, but have them all lead to the center of the web. Give each child a streamer. A prize goes to the first one to unravel the web. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. or kids, few holidays are more anticipated than Halloween. The chance to dress up in costume and patrol the neighborhood with friends while collecting treats is the highlight of many a child’s autumn. For parents, anticipation is replaced by anxiety. While kids are out trick-or-treating, parents may be home or at work hoping their kids are safe and sound. Because Halloween is so popular among kids, it’s hard for parents to forbid trick-or-treating. But parents should instruct kids on the following tips to ensure this Halloween is as safe as it is fun. • Strangers’ homes are off limits. Make sure kids know they should never enter the home of a stranger, no matter how friendly or welcoming that stranger may seem. • There’s no going it alone. Kids should not be permitted to go out alone. When trick-or-treating, kids should always be accompanied not only by their friends, but there must be at least one adult chaperone present at all times. Parents should get together several weeks before Halloween to determine who will chaperone, where kids will be trick-ortreating and during what hours. • Stay close to home. Kids should stay in their own neighborhood and only visit homes of neighbors they know. Advise kids to steer clear of homes whose doors are hidden from street view. Chaperones should accompany kids to the front door if visibility from the street is poor. • Choose safe costumes. Kids should wear costumes made of light colored material. If a child insists on a favorite costume that uses largely dark material, attach reflective tape to the costume so your favorite reveler is easily visible to motorists during twilight and nighttime hours when it’s not always easy for drivers to see. • No toy guns. Toy guns are just asking for trouble, as many of today’s replicas are easily confused with the real thing. Play it safe and choose costumes that aren’t accessorized with toy guns. • Bring a flashlight along. Night falls quickly in late October, so kids and chaperones alike should carry a flashlight to improve their visibility and make them more visible to passing motorists. • Stick to the sidewalks. Trick-or-treaters should stick to the sidewalks and always cross the street at corners. Don’t walk in the street, and never walk between parked cars when crossing the street, as it’s especially difficult for motorists to anticipate pedestrians walking or running from behind parked cars into the street. • Be wary of masks. Many masks restrict a child’s vision, so look for one that provides sufficient visibility. If a child’s favorite mask is low on visibility, make children agree to remove their mask when crossing the street. Parents understandably worry when kids go trick-ortreating. But a few simple safety lessons shared with children can ensure everyone gets home safe.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Exposing the Darkness A recent poll said that a majority of Americans indicated that their favorite holiday is Halloween. They didn’t explain why. Perhaps some enjoy the fun and games, decorating and masquerading. I certainly love the fall scenery and sights and sounds of harvest time. But for some Halloween is deadly serious. It is Satan’s most high and unholy day, say his followers. In our world there are two kingdoms – the kingdom of darkness and the kingdom of light; or the kingdom of Satan, the prince of darkness and the kingdom of God and his Son, Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. The apostle Paul admonishes believers in Christ, “For you were once in darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out

what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:8-15) How can we expose and expel the darkness? BELIEVERS MUST DISCERN BETWEEN GOOD AND EVIL. The prince of darkness is a deceiver and destroyer. “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life and have it to the full.” (John 10:10) Avoid and reject anything that could open a door or promote the kingdom of darkness. This could be objects such as certain jewelry, idols, certain tattoos, videos, games, and music of the kingdom of darkness. In the end times, there will be mass deception make sure you are walking in the light. (I John 1:7) BELIEVERS MUST WALK AS CHILDREN OF LIGHT. Light exposes and dispels darkness, “For you once were darkness,

but now you are light in the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:8-9) Your life as a believer will expose the darkness with “goodness, righteousness, and truth.” Jesus taught us to be salt and light. October 6, 1536 is the day William Tyndale was burned alive at the stake for the “crime” of translating the Bible into English. Others died for the Bible so we can read it and live out its truth. Don’t neglect the Word of God. It will reveal how to please God in all that you do. (II Timothy 2:15-19; Ephesians 5:10) BELIEVERS EXPOSE THE DARKNESS BY LIVING HOLY LIVES. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:11-12) I recently saw this on Facebook, “Let your love for God change the world, but never let the world change your love for God.” BELIEVERS PROCLAIM THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST TO THOSE IN DARKNESS. “’Therefore,’ he says, ‘Awake, you who sleep, arise from the dead and Christ will give you light.” (Ephesians 5:13-14) For some reason the entertainment industry and advertisement likes to portray zombies – the

walking dead. The scriptures describe those without Christ as spiritually dead. But there is hope for all spiritual zombies. Repent of sin, awake, arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light. Paul put it this way, “Giving thanks to the Father who has qualified us to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light. He has delivered us from the power of darkness and translated us into the kingdom of the son he loves in whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins.” (Colossians 1:10-14) Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness but have the light of life.” (John 8:12) Someone said becoming a Christian, a follower of Christ, is like a pumpkin. When we receive Christ by faith, God comes into us, scoops out all the yucky stuff out of the inside, carves a smiley face on us, puts his light in us, and shines through us into the darkness. Are you walking in the light? Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You could be caught in a torrent of advice from well-meaning friends and colleagues this week. But remember, Lamb, you are at your best when you are your own inimitable self. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Expect strong efforts to get you to accept things as they are and not question them. But ignore all that and continue your inquiries until you’re sure you have all the answers you need. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Heavier than usual family and workplace duties compete for your time this week. Try to strike a balance so that you’re not overwhelmed by either. Pressures ease by week’s end. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It’s a good time for the Moon Child to show off your uniquely inspired approach to the culinary skills -especially if they’re directed toward impressing someone special. LEO (July 23 to August 22) You might be happy about the re-emergence of a long-deferred deal. But don’t pounce on it quite yet. Time can change things. Be sure the values you looked for before are still there. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Try to rein in your super-critical attitude, even if things aren’t being done quite as you would prefer. Remember: What you say now could create an awkward situation later on. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Although you can expect on-thejob cooperation from most of your colleagues this week, some people

might insist on knowing more about your plans before they can accept them. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Creating another way to do things is commendable. But you could find some resistance this week from folks who would rather stick with the triedand-true than try something new. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) You usually can keep your aim focused on your goal. But you might need to make adjustments to cope with unsteadiness factors that could arise over the course of the week. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) News arrives about a projected move. Be prepared to deal with a series of possible shifts, including starting and finishing times, and how much the budget will actually cover. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A new relationship needs time to develop. Let things flow naturally. It could be a different story with a workplace situation, which might require faster and more focused attention. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Accept a compliment without trying to troll for any hidden reason beyond what was said. After all, don’t you deserve to be praised every now and then? Of course you do. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to weigh all possibilities before making a decision. You would be a fine judge, or even be a star in a jury room. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.

The fourth debate was last Tuesday night, a long three hours plus. To be sure —just the same ole — a bunch of millionaires telling the rest of us we should share, share and share some more. Typical socialist garbage. With 12 candidates sharing the stage, the debate was held in Westerville Ohio , sponsored by two of the most extreme liberal outlets in the country, CNN and the New York Times. Prior to the debate, starting, of course, with who else but the DNC chairman Tom Perez. One of his first comments was Democrats can walk and chew gum.” My comment was: Yes! Just not at the same time! And the rest Perez’s comments were exactly what you have come to expect from him. Nothing except propaganda. Out of the 12 candidates, Tulsi Gabbard in my opinion, came out on top although the polls showed

it was Elizabeth Warren. The other 10 candidates were VP Joe Biden; Sen. B ernie Sanders; Sen. Kamala Harris; Mayor Pete Buttgieg; Sen. Cory Booker; Sen. Amy Klobuchar; former Rep. Beto O’Rourke; former housing and urban development secretary Julian Castro, former tech executive Andrew Yang, billionaire philanthropist Tom Steyer; with Biden and Warren standing next to each other at center stage. All in all, the whole bunch acted like 2nd graders attacking one another with a couple of them with their hands up, not able to wait to talk and talk some more. The evening was spent with hair-brain ideas, false facts, attacking one another, and knocking their favorite person, Trump. And of course, Russia came up! Biden, when asked about his son Hunter’s latest extortion, actually said “Let’s

not talk about my corruption, let’s talk about Trump.” Gabbard, in her white knight suit, when being challenged about involvement in foreign governments actually turned around and challenged Biden by saying, “Why was it okay when you were the VP?” And to top things off, while talking about Syria in 2011 under Obama’s watch, she also put CNN and The New York Times in their place for smearing her and the other veterans, as well as knocking both parties. In my opinion, she’s a Democratic worth listening to. That’s why she doesn’t have a chance because in these crazy times she makes sense at times. Warren’s selling point of the evening was Medicare for all. The cost will go down except for the rich and big corporations. (Her plan for Medicare for all.) And of course, Bernie

chimed in by saying “I wrote the damn bill on health care.” Folks, if this happens you can kiss healthcare in the country goodbye, and I can’t say I know many medical professionals that would work for the government and the likes of Bernie Sanders or Elizabeth Warren. Frankly, I don’t blame them. The other topics that were touched on were jobs for all. Half of these candidates are in favor of all government jobs, i.e., socialism. As per income gap, the goal is to throw everyone in the same pot and of course busting up the big corporations. A great way to start another huge depression. And certainly O’Rourke added nothing except more about take away guns, especially the AR15 and AK47s. Other topics were the opioid epidemic, abortion, and the Supreme Court. At the end of the evening, Warren spoke the most with 23.1 minutes and Steyer the least with 7.2 minutes. Let me leave you this week with final thoughts. 1. A government that has total control, from all jobs to healthcare, is a danger. In another word, Socialism. 2. A government that wants to take guns away from its law abiding citizens is a government you should not relinquish your guns. to. Not now. Not ever! Until next week!
