“Fried chicken, celery, and grapes.
At 3:00 p.m. last Thursday there was a vote to approve the procedure for the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump. The vote on House Resolution 660 looked like this: Democratic, 231 Yeas, 2 Nays, 0 Present, 1 Not Voting; Republican, 0 Yeas, 194 Nays, 0 Present, 3 Not Voting; Independent, 1 Yea, 0 Nay, 0 Present, 0 Not Voting; Total, 232 Yeas, 196 Nays, 0 Present, 4 Not Voting. With the yeas in the majority, what’s all this about? In my personal opinion, it’s about getting rid of Trump any way they (the Democrats) can. Why impeachment? At this point I believe that the Democrats realize their only chance to beat the current President in the 2020 election is to impeach and indict. Please note I said impeach and indict! If indicted, legally he couldn’t run for another term. Keep in mind I’m not an attorney. However, I do believe this is the Democrats’ main motivation. These people will stoop to any level as Trump continues to drain the swamp. At 10:34 a.m. on October 31, just after the House voted to formalize the impeachment inquiry of her father, Ivanka Trump, a senior advisor to President Trump as well as his daughter, tweeted a quote from a letter former President Thomas Jefferson wrote to his own daughter, Martha. Ivanka’s tweet was: “ ‘...surrounded by enemies and spies catching
and perverting every word that falls from my lips or flows from my pen, and inventing where facts fail them.’ Thomas Jefferson’s reflections on Washington, D.C. in a letter to his daughter Martha. Some things never change, dad! President Trump’s campaign called the passed House impeachment inquiry resolution “an attempt to remove a duly-elected President for strictly political reasons. Thursday’s vote merely proves that the entire impeachment process was a sham from the beginning, and the mouthpiece of the Democratic Party, Nancy Pelosi, can’t legitimize it after the fact. We can all read the transcript of the Ukraine phone call and see there was no quid pro quo and no basis for yet another three-ring circus from the Democrats. I absolutely believe this will backfire and voters will punish the Democrats who support this farce and this President will easily be re-elected. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the greatest witch hunt in American history! All this will accomplish is create more division than already exists in America. In the end, Thursday’s measure defined the procedures lawmakers will follow as they transition from weeks of closed door interviews with witnesses to public hearings and ultimately to possible votes on whether to actually impeach Trump. This was not a vote to impeach President Trump,
rather it was a vote to formalize the impeachment proceedings. Even after this resolution the House Democrats are still denying House Republicans the unrestricted right to call their own witnesses. Pelosi probably said let’s take this vote so we can get away for a week’s recess. Sound familiar? Let’s vote on this bill so we can read it and find out what’s in it (referring to the Affordable Healthcare Act also known as Obamacare). On to Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi. Wouldn’t you know it! The Washington Post headline was “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State, dies at 48. They immediately faced public backlash, and the headline was quickly changed. President Trump spoke on Sunday morning TV on Oct. 20. He announced that alBaghdadi was killed wearing a vest that he detonated himself when he was cornered by U.S. troop forces Saturday night, Oct. 19. The President said al-Baghdadi died like a dog after being run down a dead-end tunnel. And to top it off, this coward took three of his children with him. And what does Trump get for a most successful mission? A kick in the teeth from extreme liberals, CNN, MSNBC, and the Washington Post. And to top it off, after this successful mission, while at the fifth World Series game, he had to deal with the boos of the crowd that chanted “lock him up.
Let me remind those that booed the President, extreme liberals, I consider you enemies of this country and a disgrace! Al-Baghdadi led ISIS for the last five years, presiding over its ascendency as it cultivated a barbaric reputation for burning people alive in cages, beheadings, and other horrific executions. And the extreme liberals dared to boo this President. This was nothing more than a successful mission that our President oversaw. It was a great day for America! Recently I’ve been asked a number of times if I think this is going to come to a civil war. I’ve said I truly hope not. However, I’ll repeat what a Civil War scholar and dear f r iend of mine, D oug Lippman, said as we were discussing this entire situation. He said if it does, it will be much worse than the first one because it won’t be South against North or North against South, but it will be neighbor against neighbor, family member against family member! Wake up America, and together we’ll be stronger. Leaving you with this thought: Donald J. Trump was the President for exactly 19 minutes when the first impeachment statement was made by who else but the Washington Post. Prior to press time it was reported Congressman John Shimkus was considering not retiring. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. Cooking With Lizzie
Put Another Pot On The Burner
I love fall for a lot of reasons. It's my favorite time to head for the kitchen. As a child I remember my grandma always had a pot of soup simmering on the back burner. It was a sure sign of fall in the air, so it's a given that soup is my thing this time of year. Some of my favorites are Black Bean Soup and Asian Chicken Noodle Soup, and these don't have to simmer all day.
Black Bean Soup
2 cans (19 oz. each) black 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper beans, rinsed and drained Large pinch ground red pepper 1 3/4 cups defatted low-sodium 1 tsp. olive oil chicken broth 1/2 large red bell pepper, slivered 1 cup water 1/2 large green bell pepper, slivered 1 tsp. ground cumin 1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest 1/4 tsp. dried oregano In large, heavy saucepan, combine beans, broth, water, cumin, oregano, black pepper and ground red pepper. Cover and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring once or twice, 15 minutes, or until flavors are blended. Meanwhile, in small no-stick skillet, warm oil over medium high heat. Add bell peppers, reduce heat to medium and saute 4 to 6 minutes, or until tender. Ladle half of soup into food processor or blender and process until pureed (work in batches if necessary). Return puree to pan; add lemon zest. Ladle soup into bowls and top each serving with some of the sauteed bell peppers.
Asian Chicken Noodle Soup
1 T. plus 1 tsp. vegetable oil 12 oz. skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, thinly sliced 4 scallions, thinly sliced on the diagonal 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp. grated fresh ginger 2 cups thinly sliced small white mushrooms 3 cups defatted reduced-sodium chicken broth 2½ cups water
1/2 cup canned sliced bamboo shoots, rinsed and drained 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 4 oz. fresh cappellini pasta 4 cups packed fresh spinach leaves, coarsely chopped 1 T. balsamic vinegar 2 T. reduced-sodium soy sauce 2 large egg whites, lightly beaten 1/2 tsp. dark sesame oil 1 medium carrot, shredded 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro In large saucepan, warm vegetable oil over medium-high heat until very hot but not smoking. Add chicken and stir-fry for 2 minutes, or until opaque. Add scallions, garlic and ginger, and stir-fry for 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Add mushrooms and stir-fry for l minute, or until tender. Add broth, water, bamboo shoots and red pepper flakes, and bring to boil over high heat. Stir in pasta and spinach, and cook l minute, or until pasta is tender and spinach is just wilted. Reduce heat to medium and stir in vinegar and soy sauce. Stir in beaten egg whites and simmer, stirring, for l minute. Stir in sesame oil. Ladle soup into 4 bowls and top with carrots and cilantro. *** Until next week, Au Revoir! —Elizabeth Fenton

How to show appreciation for military personnel
M
ilitary personnel are unsung heroes whose sacrifices for their country make it possible for hundreds of millions of people to enjoy freedoms that many people across the globe do not have. In recognition of those sacrifices, many people want to show their appreciation to both active and retired servicemen and women. Fortunately, there are many ways to do just that. • Pitch in at home. According to the United States Department of Defense, the United States military currently deploys active duty personnel in nearly 150 countries. Many of those troops are separated from their families for months at a time, and that separation can make things difficult for their loved ones back home. If a neighbor’s
spouse is deployed overseas, offer to help around the house. Whether it’s mowing their lawn, dropping their kids off at school or inviting the whole family over for dinner one night each week, such gestures can go a long way toward easing the burden faced by spouses of deployed military personnel. • Send gifts to active personnel. Servicemen and women on active duty do not enjoy many of the luxuries that tend to be taken for granted back home. But men and women who want to show their appreciation can send care packages to active personnel serving overseas. An organization such as Operation Gratitude (operationgratitude.com), which to date has sent nearly 1.3 million care packages to active personnel, sends

donations to make their missions a reality. The Wounded Warrior Project (woundedwarriorproject. org), for example, works to honor and empower servicemen and women who incurred physical or mental injuries or illnesses on or after September 11, 2001. The organization relies on the generosity of individuals who want to help wounded military personnel overcome their injuries and illnesses. Based on audited financial statements of the 2014 fiscal ending on September 30, 2014, 80.6 percent of total expenditures went to services and programs catering to wounded military personnel and their families, assuring prospective donors that their donations will go toward helping those in need. There are many ways that civilians can express their gratitude to active and retired military personnel.

Explore the history of Veteran’s Day
S
ervice members make numerous sacrifices in defense of their countries. While the debts to service members may never be the kind that can be repaid in full, paying tribute to veterans, on Veteran’s Day and throughout the year, can be a great way to show them just how much their efforts are appreciated. Veteran’s Day begins with Armistice Day Veteran’s Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War
T
I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veteran’s Day” to honor veterans of all wars. Veteran’s Day in October? According to Military.com, for a short time, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veteran’s Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people
did not agree with this decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veteran’s Day to November 11 beginning in 1978. Since then, parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts, and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.
Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day also is called Poppy Day, when
people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty. Paying tribute There are various ways to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day. Federal government closings, educational efforts in schools, parades, and visits to military hospitals or cemeteries may take place. In Europe, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. Veteran’s Day and its sister holidays mark the honoring of veterans of all wars, with a particular focus on living veterans. It is a day to celebrate the dedication and selflessness of hardworking military men and women.
Remembering our veterans
he men and women who defend the liberties and freedoms of the countries they represent hold a special place in people’s hearts and an eternal spot in their countries’ histories. Any opportunity is a good time to commemorate the bravery and selfless deeds of military personnel, but certain prominent holidays in November make this an especially important time to thank veterans for their service. November 11 is Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in Canada. It’s also known as Armistice Day in other parts of the world. These holidays honor all military veterans who have provided service to their countries. There are many ways to honor the military at home and abroad in time for the November festivities. The following are just a handful of ways to show appreciation for military men and women. • When dining out, ask your server if you can pay the tab for a soldier or veteran you see in the restaurant. • Attend a military parade with your family and explain the significance of the day to children in attendance. • Draft letters and send care packages to soldiers currently in service far away from home. • Ask your company if Veterans Day or Remembrance Day can be an observed holiday at your place of business each year to pay homage to servicemen and women.
• Visit a military memorial in a city near you. Your town also may have its own memorial. • Petition town officials to erect a memorial if your town does not already have one. Such memorials can be a source of inspiration for your community. • Support a military family in your town who may be missing a loved one stationed elsewhere. Make meals, mow the lawn, help with grocery shopping, or simply provide emotional support. • Volunteer time at a vet-
erans’ hospital. You may be able to read with veterans or engage in other activities. • Get involved with a military support charity that can provide much-needed funds to struggling families or disabled veterans. • Have children speak with veterans in your family, including grandparents, uncles and aunts or even their own parents. It can help them gain perspective on the important roles the military plays. • Ask a veteran to give a commencement speech at a school or to be the guest of
honor at a special function. • Drive disabled veterans to doctors’ appointments or to run any errands. • Support a local VFW organization. • Create a scrapbook for a veteran in your life. • Cheer for or thank military personnel each time you see them. • Visit the veterans’ portion of a nearby cemetery and place poppies or other flowers on the graves. • Always keep the military on your mind and never forget those who have served and didn’t return home.

Pitfalls to avoid as you try to lose weight New Year’s resolutions run the gamut from the simple to the complex. Some people resolve to make small changes that don’t affect their daily lives all that much, while others aim to make significant changes in the hopes of dramatically improving their quality of life. Resolving to lose weight, which often tops annual lists of the most popular resolutions, falls into the latter category. A 2018 survey from Cision and Varo Money found that 45 percent of respondents resolved to lose weight or get in shape in 2018. Unfortunately, various studies have found that resolutions often fall by the wayside long before
people achieve their goals. In fact, a 2015 report from U.S. News indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail by the second week of February. Such success rates, or lack thereof, might not be too big a deal for people who make silly resolutions that, successful or not, would not have too big an impact on their lives. But many people resolve to lose weight for serious reasons, such as lowering their risk for disease or improving their quality of life. In such instances, success can be a matter of life or death. After resolving to lose weight, people might be derailed by some common pitfalls. Recognizing these pitfalls and learning how to avoid them can help
people achieve their weight loss goals. • You’re not specific enough. Try not to be vague when setting your weight loss goals. Simply saying “I want to lose weight” likely won’t provide the motivation you need to achieve your goal. Speak with your physician and ask about how much weight you need to lose. Once you learn that number, work with your doctor and a personal trainer to set realistic goals. For example, if you need to lose 10 lbs., resolving to lose one pound per week for 10 weeks is a specific, realistic and healthy approach to weight loss. And by the end of that 10-week period, you likely will have

lism, adversely affecting how your body approaches burning calories. • You embrace a fad diet. Various studies examining an assortment of fad diets have indicated that such diets typically only produce short-term results, if any. Any weight lost while adhering to a fad diet is typically regained once dieters go off the diet. Instead of adopting a fad diet, work with your physician to devise a healthy, long-term eating plan. • You eat more than you think. Audra Wilson, RD, a clinical dietitian affiliated
with Northwestern Medicine®, notes that people typically underestimate their calorie intake by 30 percent. Chances are, you’re consuming more calories than you think, even while you attempt to lose weight. Track the calories you consume each day so you can stay the course in regard to what your physician recommends. Avoiding some common weight loss pitfalls can help people turn their resolution to drop some weight into a reality.

grown accustomed to your new health routine, increasing the likelihood that you will keep it up even after you achieved your goal. • You try to save up your calories. The experts at Northwestern Medicine® note that many people think skipping a few meals per day will decrease their overall calorie intake. However, such an approach typically leads to overeating when you sit down for a meal or increased snacking throughout the day. In addition, skipping meals slows down your metabo-

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, or UC, are inflammatory bowel diseases that share many similarities. However, the two conditions are different in various ways as well. Crohn’s and UC affect the intestines and can cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. This may result in various symptoms, such as diarrhea, fever, fatigue, abdominal pain and cramping, weight loss, and blood in the stool. In addition, UCLA Health says that each disease can develop in people of any age, including teenagers and young adults. The causes of each condition, which affect men and women equally, are largely unknown. However, factors such as the environment, genetics and

inappropriate immune system responses are often implicated in the onset. Despite their similarities, Crohn’s and UC are different. MedicineNet offers that Crohn’s disease can affect any part of the gastroesophageal tract from the mouth to the anus. UC, on the other hand, is only confined to the large bowel. While people with Crohn’s disease will have episodes of pain and diarrhea, among other symptoms, remission can occur for stretches. Those with UC often experience pain in the lower left side with rectal bleeding, frequent stools and a mucous-like discharge. Such symptoms are typically ongoing. There is no cure for Crohn’s disease or UC, though the Mayo Clinic notes therapy can greatly reduce signs and symptoms and even bring about long-term remission. Treatments may include medications and
special diets. Surgery can often eliminate UC, but it typically involves removing the entire colon and rectum. Surgery also may be an option for those with Crohn’s disease, advises the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. As many as 75 percent of people with Crohn’s find that medications can no longer control their symptoms. Surgery involves removal of the diseased segments of the bowel. Patients should keep in mind that recurrence of Crohn’s is possible, even after surgery. People with either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis may be advised to undergo frequent testing, which can include both a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy to periodically check up on the health of the GI tract. People with Crohn’s or UC may be at an elevated risk for gastrointestinal cancers.

Get the facts about the cold and flu
The common cold and influenza are two contagious viruses that many people may be all too aware of. Although colds and flu can be contracted any time of the year, winter tends to be a prime time for cold and flu outbreaks, as more time spent indoors in close proximity to others provides an easy way for viruses to pass from one person to another. Despite how common these illnesses can be, there seems to be no shortage of misinformation concerning prevention and treatment of the viruses. Those who think they know all about a cold or the flu can still benefit from a refresher course, which may even debunk some prevailing myths about both ailments.
rus is the most common cause, which accounts for between 10 and 40 percent of infections, advises the American Lung Association. Adults get an average of two to four colds per year, while children suffer six to eight colds annually. In fact, in the United States, colds account for more visits to the doctor than any other condition, says the ALA. The Cleveland Clinic states colds are contracted from inhalation of microscopic particles in the air or from contact with contaminated surfaces. Symptoms can include runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion, often with sore throat, mild cough, mild aches/ fatigue, and fever in youngsters.
Cold Colds are relatively minor infections of the throat and nose that are caused by more than 200 different viruses. Rhinovi-
Influenza The flu is a contagious respiratory illness that is caused by the influenza virus. It infects the throat, nose and sometimes the
lungs, advises the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Like colds, the flu also can be spread through tiny droplets made when infected individuals cough, sneeze or talk, or by touching infected surfaces. One common misconception about the flu is that it can be contracted from the flu vaccine. This is not true. Harvard Medical School says the flu shot is made from an inactivated virus that can’t transmit infection. People who get sick after receiving a flu vaccination were going to get sick anyway, as it takes a week or two to get protection from the vaccine. Many people assume that because they became sick after getting the vaccine, the flu shot caused their illness. Even though the flu and colds share some symptoms, such as runny nose, sneezing, hoarseness, and cough, the flu is not just a
bad cold. While very few people have landed in the hospital with a cold, the flu can be so severe as to require hospitalization. Steering clear of people who are sick, frequently washing hands, sterilizing common surfaces, and
What is an ocular migraine?
Headaches can be difficult to handle and hard to see coming. Various things, including the weather, can trigger a headache. The American Migraine Foundation indicates that barometric pressure fluctuates as the seasons change, and those variations can lead to migraines. Changes in the weather may contribute to ocular migraines, a specific type of headache that tends to catch people off-guard more often than not.
affect both eyes and resolve themselves more quickly than ocular migraines.
Understanding ocular migraines A migraine that involves a visual disturbance is called an ocular migraine, according to Healthline. Ocular migraines may develop with or without the pain of a classic migraine headache. Ocular migraines are different from the sensitivity to light that often accompanies migraines. The eye health organization All About Vision says ocular migraines are characterized by temporary vision loss or even temporary blindness in one eye. Ocular migraines may be mistaken for visual migraines, which typically
Causes of ocular migraines Ocular migraines are believed to be caused by the same things that trigger classic migraines. The World Health Organization says migraine headaches seem to be triggered by a mechanism deep in the brain that releases inflammatory substances around nerves and blood vessels in the head and brain. Common triggers can include certain foods, beverages, food additives, perfumes and strong odors, glaring lights, weather, or emotional stress. While ocular migraines originate in the brain, they
Symptoms of ocular migraines During an ocular migraine, a small blind spot generally affects central vision in one eye. This blind spot can get larger, making it impossible to see clearly, which can affect one’s ability to drive, operate machinery or read. In most cases, the disturbance to vision will be resolved in about an hour.
can be mistaken for a more serious condition called retinal migraine. Retinal migraines involve repeated bouts of short-lasting, diminished vision or blindness. These bouts may precede or accompany a headache, says the Mayo Clinic. A retinal migraine may be the result of diminished blood flow to the blood vessels in the eye due to high blood pressure.
getting the flu shot are ways to prevent illness. Antibiotics are not effective against the cold and flu, and antiviral medication can lessen the effects and shorten the duration of flu but may not be able to prevent it.
The ALA notes that herbal and mineral products have received a lot of publicity as cold and flu remedies, but insists that such claims are not solidly supported by science. If symptoms do not abate, see a doctor.

Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new careerchanging phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might

SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. Ministries During World War II the United State’s government disseminated a slogan to its employees and citizens — “Loose lips Sink Ships!” That statement is true in so many ways. James said that an uncontrolled tongue can do terrible damage. “See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of inequity. The tongue is set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell.” (Janes 3:1-6) These are harsh but true words. Missionary Hudson Taylor, “There are three great truths: 1) There is a God. 2) He has spoken to us in the Bible. 3) He means what he says.” James points out that we can control a powerful horse with a bit and bridle and a huge ship with a little rudder, “But no one can control the tongue.” (James 3:8) But God can! The Holy Spirit can help us learn and develop selfcontrol. Why should you want to control or tame your tongue? James gives us a reason. “For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.” (James 3:2) That is an awesome truth. We may not be perfect, but how can we tame the tongue? KNOW THE POWER OF THE TONGUE. Satan uses the tongue to divide people. Idle and hurtful words are damaging and spread destruction. A Facebook post says, “Gossip is the devil’s radio. So, don’t be his DJ. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and he who loves it will eat its fruit.” (Proverbs 18:22) Learn to speak life, never tearing down, always building up. (Ephesians 4:29) KNOW G O D LY WISDOM. We need wisdom to know when to speak and when not to. “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in meekness of wisdom . . . But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then
peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits.” (James 3:13-18) Godly wisdom flows out of the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord is crucial in taming the tongue. Jesus said we will give an account on judgement day for every idle word. We will be justified or condemned by our words. “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks . . . But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:34, 36-37) KNOW THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. While no man can tame the tongue the Holy Spirit can, if we will surrender to his control. He will develop the fruit of the Spirit, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. “Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22-23) Perhaps, David talked about the mouth more than anyone and prayed for the Lord to set a watch over his mouth. (Psalm 141:3; 19:4) KNOW AND FOLLOW THE EXAMPLE OF JESUS. He spoke words of life. Zig Ziglar said, “Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you. Listen in such a way that others love to speak to you.” Before you speak let your words pass through three gates. Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Peter tells us how Jesus handled reproach. “Who when he suffered, He did not threaten, but committed himself to Him who judges righteously.” (I Peter 2:21-24) None of us are perfect. If you stumble, repent. Look in faith to the cleansing blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Ask the Holy Spirit to help control your tongue. God can bring peace to your past, purpose to your present and hope to your future. Confess Jesus as Lord. (Romans 10:9) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com
