Taming the Tongue During World War II the United State’s government disseminated a slogan to its employees and citizens — “Loose lips Sink Ships! That statement is true in so many ways. James said that an uncontrolled tongue can do terrible damage. “See how great a forest a little fire kindles! And the tongue is a fire, a world of inequity. The tongue is set among our members that it defiles the whole body and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. (Janes 3:1-6) These are harsh but true words. Missionar y Hudson Taylor, “There are three great truths: 1) There is a God. 2) He has spoken to us in the Bible. 3) He means what he says. James points out that we can control a powerful horse with a bit and bridle and a huge ship with a little rudder, “But no one can control the tongue.

(James 3:8) But God can! The Holy Spirit can help us learn and develop selfcontrol. Why should you want to control or tame your tongue? James gives us a reason. “For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he is a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body. (James 3:2) That is an awesome truth. We may not be perfect, but how can we tame the tongue? KNOW THE POWER OF THE TONGUE. Satan uses the tongue to divide people. Idle and hurtful words are damaging and spread destruction. A Facebook post says, “Gossip is the devil’s radio. So, don’t be his DJ. “Death and life are in the power of the tongue and he who loves it will eat its fruit. (Proverbs 18:22) Learn to speak life, never tearing down, always building up. (Ephesians 4:29) K N O W G O D LY WISD OM. We need

The Weekly – Mt. Vernon Area wisdom to know when to speak and when not to. “Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in meekness of wisdom . . . But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits. (James 3:13-18) Godly wisdom flows out of the fear of the Lord. The fear of the Lord is crucial in taming the tongue. Jesus said we will give an account on judgement day for every idle word. We will be justified or condemned by our words. “For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks . . . But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. (Matthew 12:34, 36-37) KNOW THE POWER OF THE HOLY SPIRIT. While no man can tame the tongue the Holy Spirit can, if we will surrender to his control. He will develop the fruit of the Spirit, such as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, faithfulness, gentleness,

3

and self-control. “Against such things there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23) Perhaps, David talked about the mouth more than anyone and prayed for the Lord to set a watch over his mouth. (Psalm 141:3; 19:4) KNOW AND FOLLOW THE EX AMPLE OF JESUS. He spoke words of life. Zig Ziglar said, “Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you. Listen in such a way that others love to speak to you. Before you speak let your words pass through three gates. Is it true? Is it necessary? Is it kind? Peter tells us how Jesus handled reproach. “Who when he suffered, He did not threaten, but committed himself to Him who judges righteously. (I Peter 2:2124) None of us are perfect. If you stumble, repent. Look in faith to the cleansing blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Ask the Holy Spirit to help control your tongue. God can bring peace to your past, purpose to your present and hope to your future. Confess Jesus as Lord. (Romans 10:9) Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Caution dominates the Sheep’s monetary aspect this week. Rams and Ewes might want to shear their big spending plans until a more favorable financial picture begins to emerge by week’s end. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Thrift counts both at home and at work. So you might want to rethink major purchases or investments. Also, be wary of a so-called revelation about a previous decision. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Both household budgets and workplace accounts might benefit from some judicious trimming of unnecessary expenses. A partnership could lead to an unexpected challenge. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A previously overlooked opportunity could re-emerge with a new travel-related matter. Check this out carefully to see if it’s what you really want before you decide one way or another. LEO (July 23 to August 22) This could be the start of a new careerchanging phase, so start marking down your many accomplishments for those who need to know how much you have to offer. Good luck. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) It’s not too early for the sometimes procrastinating Virgo to start making those long-distance travel plans. The sooner you decide where to go, when to go and how to go, the better. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Financial matters once again figure in any major action you might

take regarding career, travel or other endeavors. You’ll want a ready reserve to help you back up those moves. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Trying to resolve a problem in a personal relationship could be more difficult than you’d expected. Look into the possibility that someone might be interfering for his or her own reasons. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) A project you once rejected might be more attractive because of changes that you feel you can now work with. The weekend is especially favorable to family matters. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) This is a good week for the gregarious Goat to enjoy being with people you care for. You might even want to show off those creative kitchen skills you’re so adept at. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A colleague might think your attitude is patronizing or even outright insulting. True. That might be his or her problem. But you might want to take some reassuring steps anyway. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) It’s a good time to jettison those old concepts about a family matter you might have been holding on to. This will help make room for a new and more enlightened way of dealing with it. BORN THIS WEEK: You like to analyze a puzzling situation before you try to resolve it. Pitfalls to avoid as you try to lose weight New Year’s resolutions run the gamut from the simple to the complex. Some people resolve to make small changes that don’t affect their daily lives all that much, while others aim to make significant changes in the hopes of dramatically improving their quality of life. Resolving to lose weight, which often tops annual lists of the most popular resolutions, falls into the latter

category. A 2018 survey from Cision and Varo Money found that 45 percent of respondents resolved to lose weight or get in shape in 2018. Unfortunately, various studies have found that resolutions often fall by the wayside long before people achieve their goals. In fact, a 2015 report from U.S. News indicated that 80 percent of resolutions fail by the second week of Feb-

ruary. Such success rates, or lack thereof, might not be too big a deal for people who make silly resolutions that, successful or not, would not have too big an impact on their lives. But many people resolve to lose weight for serious reasons, such as lowering their risk for disease or improving their quality of life. In such instances, success can be a matter of life or death. After resolving to lose weight, people might be derailed by some common pitfalls. Recognizing these pitfalls and learning how to avoid them can help people achieve their weight loss goals. • You’re not specific enough. Try not to be vague when setting your weight loss goals. Simply

saying “I want to lose weight” likely won’t provide the motivation you need to achieve your goal. Speak with your physician and ask about how much weight you need to lose. Once you learn that number, work with your doctor and a personal trainer to set realistic goals. For example, if you need to lose 10 lbs., resolving to lose one pound per week for 10 weeks is a specific, realistic and healthy approach to weight loss. And by the end of that 10-week period, you likely will have grown accustomed to your new health routine, increasing the likelihood that you will keep it up even after you achieved your goal. • You try to save up your calories. The experts at

Northwestern Medicine® note that many people think skipping a few meals per day will decrease their overall calorie intake. However, such an approach typically leads to overeating when you sit down for a meal or increased snacking throughout the day. In addition, skipping meals slows down your metabolism, adversely affecting how your body approaches burning calories. • You embrace a fad diet. Various studies examining an assortment of fad diets have indicated that such diets typically only produce short-term results, if any. Any weight lost while adhering to a fad diet is typically regained once dieters go off the diet. Instead of

adopting a fad diet, work with your physician to devise a healthy, long-term eating plan. • You eat more than you think. Audra Wilson, RD, a clinical dietitian affiliated with Northwestern Medicine®, notes that people typically underestimate their calorie intake by 30 percent. Chances are, you’re consuming more calories than you think, even while you attempt to lose weight. Track the calories you consume each day so you can stay the course in regard to what your physician recommends. Avoiding some common weight loss pitfalls can help people turn their resolution to drop some weight into a reality.

Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, or UC, are inflammatory bowel diseases that share many similarities. However, the two conditions are different in various ways as well. Crohn’s and UC affect the intestines and can cause chronic inflammation of the digestive tract. This may result in various symptoms, such as diarrhea, fever, fatigue, abdominal pain and cramping, weight loss, and blood in the stool. In addition, UCLA Health

says that each disease can develop in people of any age, including teenagers and young adults. The causes of each condition, which affect men and women equally, are largely unknown. However, factors such as the environment, genetics and inappropriate immune system responses are often implicated in the onset. Despite their similarities, Crohn’s and UC are different. MedicineNet offers that Crohn’s disease

Located in the Speciality Clinic at Salem Township Hospital.

can affect any part of the gastroesophageal tract from the mouth to the anus. UC, on the other hand, is only confined to the large bowel. While people with Crohn’s disease will have episodes of pain and diarrhea, among other symptoms, remission can occur for stretches. Those with UC often experience pain in the lower left side with rectal bleeding, frequent stools and a mucouslike discharge. Such symptoms are typically ongoing. There is no cure for Crohn’s disease or UC, though the Mayo Clinic notes therapy can greatly reduce signs and symptoms and even bring about longterm remission. Treatments may include medications and special diets. Surgery can often eliminate UC, but it typically involves removing the entire colon and rectum. Surgery also may be an option for those with

Crohn’s disease, advises the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. As many as 75 percent of people with Crohn’s find that medications can no longer control their symptoms. Surgery involves removal of the diseased segments of the bowel. Patients should keep in mind that recurrence of Crohn’s is possible, even after surgery. People with either Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis may be advised to undergo frequent testing, which can include both a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy to periodically check up on the health of the GI tract. People with Crohn’s or UC may be at an elevated risk for gastrointestinal cancers. It is important for people with Crohn’s or UC to speak with a doctor so they can stay up-to-date on the latest testing and treatments.

Asian Chicken Noodle Soup

Cooking With Lizzie

Put Another Pot On The Burner I love fall for a lot of reasons. It's my favorite time to head for the kitchen. As a child I remember my grandma always had a of soup simmering on the back burner. It was a sure sign of fall in the air, so it's a given that soup is my thing this time of year. Some of my favorites are Black Bean Soup, Asian Chicken Noodle Soup, and Hearty Chicken and Green Soup, and these don't have to simmer all day.

Black Bean Soup 2 cans (19 oz. each) black beans, rinsed and drained 1 3/4 cups defatted low-sodium chicken broth 1 cup water 1 tsp. ground cumin 1/4 tsp. dried oregano

1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper Large pinch ground red pepper 1 tsp. olive oil 1/2 large red bell pepper, slivered 1/2 large green bell pepper, slivered 1/2 tsp. grated lemon zest

In large, heavy saucepan, combine beans, broth, water, cumin, oregano, black pepper and ground red pepper. Cover and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer, stirring once or twice, 15 minutes, or until flavors are blended. Meanwhile, in small no-stick skillet, warm oil over medium high heat. Add bell peppers, reduce heat to medium and saute 4 to 6 minutes, or until tender. Ladle half of soup into food processor or blender and process until pureed (work in batches if necessary). Return puree to pan; add lemon zest. Ladle soup into bowls and top each serving with some of the sauteed bell peppers.

1 T. plus 1 tsp. vegetable oil 12 oz. skinless, boneless chicken breast halves, thinly sliced 4 scallions, thinly sliced on the diagonal 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp. grated fresh ginger 2 cups thinly sliced small white mushrooms 3 cups defatted reduced-sodium chicken broth 2½ cups water

1/2 cup canned sliced bamboo shoots, rinsed and drained 1/4 tsp. crushed red pepper flakes 4 oz. fresh cappellini pasta 4 cups packed fresh spinach leaves, coarsely chopped 1 T. balsamic vinegar 2 T. reduced-sodium soy sauce 2 large egg whites, lightly beaten 1/2 tsp. dark sesame oil 1 medium carrot, shredded 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro In large saucepan, warm vegetable oil over medium-high heat until very hot but not smoking. Add chicken and stir-fry for 2 minutes, or until opaque. Add scallions, garlic and ginger, and stir-fry for 30 seconds, or until fragrant. Add mushrooms and stir-fry for l minute, or until tender. Add broth, water, bamboo shoots and red pepper flakes, and bring to boil over high heat. Stir in pasta and spinach, and cook l minute, or until pasta is tender and spinach is just wilted. Reduce heat to medium and stir in vinegar and soy sauce. Stir in beaten egg whites and simmer, stirring, for l minute. Stir in sesame oil. Ladle soup into 4 bowls and top with carrots and cilantro.

Hearty Chicken and Green Soup 1 medium leek 2 large carrots, sliced 2 cups water 2 garlic cloves, minced 1¾ cups defatted reduced-sodium 1/2 tsp. dried thyme, crumbled chicken broth 1/4 tsp. salt 8 oz. boneless, skinless chicken breasts, 1/4 tsp. freshly ground black pepper cut crosswise into 1/2" thick strips 3 oz. thin egg noodles 1 cup frozen chopped leaf spinach 2 T. chopped fresh Italian parsley Halve leek lengthwise and rinse each half well under cold running water. Cut leek halves crosswise into 1/2" pieces. In large, heavy saucepan, combine leeks, water, broth, chicken strips, spinach, carrots, garlic, thyme, salt and black pepper. Cover and bring to boil over high heat. Reduce heat to low and simmer 8 minutes. Stir in noodles, increase heat to medium-high and return to boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer, stirring occasionally, 4 to 6 minutes, or until noodles, vegetables and chicken are tender. Remove pan from heat and stir in parsley. *** Until next week, Au Revoir! —Elizabeth Fenton

Wednesday, November 6, 2019

At 3:00 p.m. last Thursday there was a vote to approve the procedure for the impeachment of President Donald J. Trump. The vote on House Resolution 660 looked like this: Democratic, 231 Yeas, 2 Nays, 0 Present, 1 Not Voting; Republican, 0 Yeas, 194 Nays, 0 Present, 3 Not Voting; Independent, 1 Yea, 0 Nay, 0 Present, 0 Not Voting; Total, 232 Yeas, 196 Nays, 0 Present, 4 Not Voting. With the yeas in the majority, what’s all this about? In my personal opinion, it’s about getting rid of Trump any way they (the Democrats) can. Why impeachment? At this point I believe that the Democrats realize their only chance to beat the current President in the 2020 election is to impeach and indict. Please note I said impeach and indict! If indicted, legally he couldn’t run for another term. Keep in mind I’m not an attorney. However, I do believe this is the Democrats’ main motivation. These people will stoop to any level as Trump continues to drain the swamp. At 10:34 a.m. on October 31, just after the House voted to formalize the impeachment inquiry of her father, Ivanka Trump, a senior advisor to President Trump as well as his daughter, tweeted a quote from a letter former President Thomas Jefferson wrote to his own daughter, Martha. Ivanka’s tweet

was: “ ‘...surrounded by enemies and spies catching and perverting every word that falls from my lips or flows from my pen, and inventing where facts fail them.’ Thomas Jefferson’s reflections on Washington, D.C. in a letter to his daughter Martha. Some things never change, dad!” President Trump’s campaign called the passed House impeachment inquiry resolution “an attempt to remove a dulyelected President for strictly political reasons.” Thursday’s vote merely proves that the entire impeachment process was a sham from the beginning, and the mouthpiece of the Democratic Party, Nancy Pelosi, can’t legitimize it after the fact. We can all read the transcript of the Ukraine phone call and see there was no quid pro quo and no basis for yet another three-ring circus from the Democrats. I absolutely believe this will backfire and voters will punish the Democrats who support this farce and this President will easily be reelected. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the greatest witch hunt in American history! All this will accomplish is create more division than already exists in America. In the end, Thursday’s measure defined the procedures lawmakers will follow as they transition from weeks of closed door interviews with witnesses to public hearings and ultimately to possible votes on whether to actually impeach Trump.

The Weekly – Mt. Vernon Area

This was not a vote to impeach President Trump, rather it was a vote to formalize the impeachment proceedings. Even after this resolution the House Democrats are still denying House Republicans the unrestricted right to call their own witnesses. Pelosi probably said let’s take this vote so we can get away for a week’s recess. Sound familiar? Let’s vote on this bill so we can read it and find out what’s in it (referring to the Affordable Healthcare Act also known as Obamacare). On to Abu Bakr alBaghdadi. Wouldn’t you know it! The Washington Post headline was “Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, austere religious scholar at helm of Islamic State, dies at 48.” They immediately faced public backlash, and the headline was quickly changed. President Trump spoke on Sunday morning TV on Oct. 20. He announced that al-Baghdadi was killed wearing a vest that he detonated himself when he was cornered by U.S. troop forces Saturday night, Oct. 19. The President said alBaghdadi died like a dog after being run down a dead-end tunnel. And to top it off, this coward took three of his children with him. And what does Trump get for a most successful mission? A kick in the teeth from extreme liberals, CNN, MSNBC, and the Washington Post. And to top it off, after this successful mission, while at the fifth World Series game, he had to deal with the boos

The students followed the announcement with a scene from the murder mystery, which caused the Rotarians in attendance to erupt in laughter. Mt. Vernon Rotary

Jefferson County CEO students Cameron Carlile, Sophie Eastham, and Jacob Frick announced the program’s annual class business project during a presentation at the Mt. Vernon Noon Rotary Club meeting last week. The students will perform a murder mystery dinner December 7 and 8

of the crowd that chanted “lock him up.” Let me remind those that booed the President, extreme liberals, I consider you enemies of this country and a disgrace! Al-Baghdadi led ISIS for the last five years, presiding over its ascendency as it cultivated a barbaric reputation for burning people alive in cages, beheadings, and other horrific executions. And the extreme liberals dared to boo this President. This was nothing more than a successful mission that our President oversaw. It was a great day for America! Recently I’ve been asked a number of times if I think this is going to come to a civil war. I’ve said I truly hope not. However, I’ll repeat what a Civil War scholar and dear friend of mine, Doug Lippman, said as we were discussing this entire situation. He said if it does, it will be much worse than the first one because it won’t be South against North or North against South, but it will be neighbor against neighbor, family member against family member! Wake up America, and together we’ll be stronger. Leaving you with this thought: Donald J. Trump was the President for exactly 19 minutes when the first impeachment statement was made by who else but the Washington Post. Prior to press time it was reported Congressman John Shimkus was considering not retiring. Until next week.
