Rotary District 6510 holds conference in Mt. Vernon

By Tina Suarez

Rotary 6510 held its annual conference at the DoubleTree Hotel in Mt. Vernon, IL on November 1–3. The conference began on Friday with the Rise Against Hunger District Food Project. This project is one where all Rotarians get together and fill 20,000 food bags to distribute to needy families oversees. The official conference opening was on Friday at 6:15 with a welcome and invocation by Shain Lloyd, assistant governor from Metropolis. The keynote speaker was Chris Etienne, PGD 6290 Rotar y International President’s Representative. Chris first joined Rotary in 1990 and is honored to have been a member of the Rotary

Club of Petoskey since 1991. Chris has held numerous positions in the Rotary organization. The evening finished up with a hospitality room hosted by Belle Clair Rotary Club. Saturday began with breakfast followed by a welcome to all members present. The morning keynote speaker was Heidi Ekborg Ott. Heidi is a twotime Rotary exchange student to Japan and Italy. Heidi has applied to take her next cultural exchange to Tahiti, French Polynesia to better her language skills. The topic she presented was “Sushi, Pasta and a Whole Lot of Grammar Errors.” In the afternoon, Rotary members got to choose

from several breakout sessions. The first breakout session was “Membership, Millennials and Motivation” presented by Amanda Folmar of the South Tyler Rotary Club. A second breakout session was “Belize Children’s Project” presented by Tim Gutknecht, AG of Rotary Club of Columbia. The third breakout session was “Put a Little Soul in Your Rotary Story” presented by Chuck Barnett, PDG D 6760 Zone 30 Public Image Coordinator. During the Saturday evening event, there was a video welcome from Rotar y International President Mark Maloney. The Assistant Governor of the Year Award was pre-

and are chaired by “Shifty” Adam Schiff. The first day involved testimony from Bill Taylor, top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. It didn’t take long to realize neither had any direct knowledge of any wrongdoing by PresFirst up, the televised ident Trump. Everything impeachment inquiry hear- was second- and third-hand ings began last Wednesday information. Congressman Wow, what a week it was! • Televised impeachment inquiry hearings • Roger Stone found guilty • Presidential pardons • New 2020 candidates • Stock market breaks 28,000

The Republicans even questioned why these individuals were called to testify. Congressman Jordan even joked to Mr. Taylor, “And you’re their star witness?” The Democratic line is they are slowly building a case (I thought the idea was to find the truth, not produce a suspense thriller). Wednesday’s hearings were absolutely a waste of time, but I shouldn’t be surprised since wasting time seems to be commonplace in Washington. Nothing new came out of Wednesday’s hearing. Then came Friday’s (I guess they couldn’t meet Thursday for some reason) testimony from former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch (2016–2019), who had been called back to Washington and reassigned in April 2019, when the new Ukrainian President was elected. Again, no firsthand testimony was available from the witness. The Friday “Television Show” seemed to be a love fest, while both Democrats and Republicans spent part of their allotted time thanking her for her long 30 years of service, and Democrats asking her how she felt about the reassignment and offering condolences for what happened to her. But I can’t say nothing came out of Friday’s televised hearings, although you won’t hear it from the lame stream media. 1) In talking about the hard job of ambassadors and their staff, she invoked the names of Benghazi Ambassador Chris Stevens and his staff and placed herself in that same group. A bad comparison, that didn’t play well. 2) Those watching the

Jim Jordan read from a previously released transcript that read like: “Someone told someone that someone said something about someone telling the story about...” You get it. Like the old game of whispering a secret in someone’s ear and whispering it along to ten people, and the resulting secret is nothing like the first.

hearings saw Chairman Schiff gavel down or “suspend” Republicans multiple times without valid reasons. 3) One of those “gavel downs” was when Schiff was asked to release transcripts of private meetings not yet released to Republicans. 4) The Ukraine ambassador to the U.S. has repeatedly denigrated President Trump in public. 5) One member of the Ukrainian parliament in 2016 said, “Most of us are in Hillary Clinton’s corner, not Trump’s.” 6) During Jim Jordan’s questioning of Ambassador Yovanovitch, she didn’t understand his question and said something to the effect that Hillary Clinton’s campaign was not involved in 2016 in Ukraine. To which Jordan smiled and said, “That’s not the question I asked you.” 7) For Ambassador Yovanovitch’s confirmation hearing in 2016, the Obama Administration provided a handbook on how to answer questions. One was how to handle Hunter Biden’s role with Burisma. 8) A star is born! Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York, asked pointed questions, was tough on Schiff and was one of the Republicans interviewed after the meeting. She corrected a report that said, “So, you think the hearings are a farce.” Her response was “Adam Schiff is making this hearing a farce.” I couldn’t agree more! 9) Following the public hearing, the Intel Committee held private hearings downstairs. On to Roger Stone. Roger Stone was found guilty on

seven counts. Stone was supposedly directly involved in the WikiLeaks release during the 2016 Presidential campaign. Sentencing is in February 2020. His attorneys will probably appeal the decision. Will President Trump pardon him? Speaking of pardons, on Friday, the week of Veterans Day, President Trump pardoned two service members accused of war crimes in Afghanistan, and restored the rank of a Navy Seal who was acquitted of murder in Iraq. Pardoned was First Lt. Clint Lorance who had been in prison for six years following a 2013 conviction. The other pardoned was Major Mathew Golsteyn, who was awaiting trial in 2020. President Trump restored the rank of Special Warfare Operator Chief Edward Gallagher, a Navy Seal, who had been convicted of posing with the corpse of an enemy combatant. On to the 2020 Presidential election. Two more in the Democratic field? Deval Patrick, the former governor of Massachusetts (2007–2015), announced his run for President last Thursday. In addition, former two-term mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg’s formal announcement should be coming soon? On continuing good economic news, the stock market reached above 28,000 last week. Until next week.

Area school provides thank you banners to 76 Veterans in Mt. Vernon and Dix

Farrington Grade School students recently completed a school service project for the veterans in Mt. Vernon who reside in nursing homes, memory care facilities, and assisted living apartments. All grades K-8 had a role in making thank you banners and cards for a total of 76 veterans. The eighth grade students personally delivered most of the banners to each veteran, with Green Tree accepting theirs to hang on the veterans’ doors during third shift the night before Veterans’ Day. The students were quite humbled getting to see the sparkle in each veteran’s eyes as their service w a s re c o g n i z e d an d knowing they were not forgotten. Many veterans were eager to share what branch of the military they served in, and those that were able eagerly shared stories of their experiences. The students interacted with veterans from every branch of the military, including Army, Nav y, Marines, Air Force, and

Coast Guard. The students met fighter pilots, gunners, tank operators, artillery specialists, and more. One veteran was on the same ship as Elvis Presley, stating, “He had his guitar, but we were so busy, we never heard him sing.â€? The same veteran told of being mandated to learn to snow ski upon arriving in Germany, as it was necessary for their mission. Only three female veterans were visited, but one will be 100 years old on her next birthday, and the other, 98 years old, freely shared how after she passed her nursing boards, she quickly enlisted to use her nursing skills in the military, even against the wishes of her parents. Another veteran shared what it felt like to guide a fighter plane onto the deck of an aircraft carrier; yet another told how he was stationed in the South Pacific and was part of the clean up efforts to bring everything home after the Atomic Bomb was dropped; another got out his photo album to show pictures of

the tank he was in, and another proudly told of training for 12 months to become a Navy Seal.  While the veterans were touched by a simple act of service on their behalf, the students were equally, if not more so, humbled and served by their interactions with the veterans. M r s . Wa g g o n e r , Farrington Grade School Superintendent, treated the students to lunch at Agave’ after their visits and at lunch took the opportunity to ask each one what they learned, or what was a powerful moment. It was unanimously agreed it was “the sparkle,â€? “the awareness,â€? “the change in their posture,â€? “the look in their eyes,â€? and “the humble grinsâ€? that all occurred simultaneously when they were asked, “Are you a Veteran.â€? Rough and tumble souls softened, eyes watered, corners of mouths tremored; and each proudly said, “YES!â€? For those who no longer could verbally communicate, a stalwart nod of the head or a gentle squeeze of the hand told his story. Â

Illinois Hunters Reminded to Put Safety First

Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is reminding hunters to make safety their first priority as they head to the field for the state’s firearm deer, upland game, waterfowl and other busy hunting seasons. “We want hunters to enjoy all the opportunities available here in Illinois, with hopes for a safe and successful hunting season this fall,â€? said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Colleen Callahan. “While we enjoy and celebrate Illinois’ hunting heritage, we want everyone – from experienced, veteran hunters to those who may be new to hunting – to always think safety first.â€? The IDNR OďŹƒce of Law Enforcement, which administers the state’s Hunter Safety Education Program, has investigated six hunting incidents so far during 2019, three of which involved hunters falling from

elevated tree stands or falling while climbing into or out of tree stands. In 2018, there were 19 hunting incidents reported in all hunting seasons in Illinois. Among the hunting incidents reported last year, 14 involved tree stands. “Hunters should use a Fall Arrest System (FAS) safety harness, no matter the type of elevated stand they are using, said Jerry Costello, director of the IDNR Office of Law Enforcement. “Statistics show that in most of the mishaps involving elevated stands, hunters were not using a fall restraint system. When utilizing a tree stand, hunters should check that their stand is installed properly. They should check the harness and straps and replace worn straps if needed; and, check the ladder and other equipment before use to make sure they are in working order. They also should be

aware of weather conditions that could make stands and steps slippery. Hunters should have their cellphones within easy reach to call for help, if needed. Hunters can review tree stand safety online at http://www.huntercourse. com/treestandsafety/ Safety educators and IDNR Conservation Police also remind everyone hunting with a firearm to: • Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, and never assume a firearm is unloaded; • Always point a firearm in a safe direction; • Be sure of the target, and make sure there are no other hunters, homes, buildings, vehicles or other animals beyond the target; and • Keep their finger out of the trigger guard and o the trigger until they are ready to shoot. Other safety considerations include ensuring heating sources are prop-

erly ventilated in hunting cabins and boats, wearing appropriate, high visibility clothing while hunting and being familiar with the area being hunted. Illinois’ busiest hunting season, the seven-day firearm deer season, begins on Friday through Sunday, Nov. 22-24, and will conclude Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 5-8. The Illinois Archery Deer Season opened Oct. 1 and continues through Jan. 19, 2020. Archery deer season is closed during the firearm deer weekends except in those counties where firearm deer hunting is not permitted. For more details on Illinois deer, waterfowl, upland game, furbearer and other hunting seasons this fall and winter, check the Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations at https://www.dnr.illinois. gov/hunting/Documents/ HuntTrapDigest.pdf

on standing in his picture (because he can still stand), to see the branch of military or war a Veteran fought in written on the hats they proudly wore, or to hear the voice of an aged, playful soul encourage each student to

be the next one to enlist, these were powerful teaching moments that cannot be replicated.   Each veteran is grateful to not be forgotten. Each is proud of their service. Each is an American Hero. Â

As a Thief in the Night Recently, I saw this news alert on Facebook, “Bible prophecy is unfolding right before our eyes, but the world to too blind to see it.” The apostles believed, taught, and lived as if Jesus could come in their lifetime. After 2,000 years, how much closer are we to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ from heaven? The Word of God tells us in several scriptures that Jesus Christ will return to earth as a thief in the night. It will be unexpectantly and take most of the inhabitants of the earth by surprise and unprepared. Why would Jesus refer to his second coming as a thief in the night? How can we be ready to meet King Jesus when he returns? THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S RETURN IS VERY CLEAR. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you and if I go. . . I will come again and receive you unto myself; that

where I am there you may be also.” (John 14:1-6) When Jesus ascended back into heaven, two angels announced that he would return. “This same Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11) Peter also spoke of the promise of Christ’s return. As a thief in the night. (II Peter 3:8-13) A thief comes by surprise in the night. When Jesus comes, most will be taken unaware. Be ready! THE PROPHECIES IN GOD’S WORD foretell the coming of Christ again from heaven. The prophecies of Christ’s first coming were fulfilled in minute detail; so also, will his second coming. There are numerous prophecies concerning the second coming of Christ. (Zechariah 14:4-5; Jude 1:14) Jesus said that he would come as a thief to those not watching. (Revelation 3:3) “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who

Wednesday, November 20, 2019 watches and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” (Revelation 16:15) Paul warned, “For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ Then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman and they shall not escape.” (I Thessalonians 5:2-3) THE PARABLE OF JESUS CONCERNING THE THIEF IN THE NIGHT warns us to be ready. “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore, you also be ready for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:4244) THE PURIT Y OF THOSE WATCHING AND WAITING FOR CHRIST’S RETURN will give them entrance into heaven. “These are the ones who . . . washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the Lamb.” (Revelation 6:1415) Paul prays, “Now may

the God of peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:23) Only repentance and faith in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross can make us ready at his return. THE PRAYERS OF THOSE AWAITING CHRIST ’S RETURN ASCEND INTO HEAVEN. Jesus told us to watch and pray. “Watch therefore for you do not know the hour when the Son of Man comes.” (Matthew 24:32-25:13) “Watch and pray always that you be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36) The Lord is coming as a thief in the night. Are you ready to meet him? Pray: “Lord Jesus, forgive me of my sins. I put faith in your blood shed on the cross to wash away my sins. Help me to be watching and ready for your soon return.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Let things develop without pressure. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It could be a problem dealing with unfamiliar people who do things differently from what you’re used to. But rely on that strong sense of purpose to get you through this difficult period. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) To avoid neglecting a personal matter because of a demanding new workplace schedule, start prioritizing immediately. Knowing how to apportion your time takes a little while to set up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It won’t be easy to avoid some of the pressures that come with change. Best advice: Take things a step at a time, and you’ll be less likely to trip up while things are in a chaotic state. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A muchtalked-about workplace change could be coming soon. Be sure to get all the details involved in the process, and once you have them, you can decide how you want to deal with it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might still believe that your trust was betrayed, although the facts would appear to prove the opposite. But by the week’s end you should learn something that will help set the record straight. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans could be a challenge because of shifting circumstances. But a more settled period starts by midweek, allowing you to firm up
