“Where there is charity and wisdom, there is neither fear nor ignorance.”

— Francis of Assisi ‘Adam Style’ Settee The auction described the settee as “in the Adam taste,” but an online search for the words won’t explain what that means. When it says “Chippendale style” in a catalog, it means it is a reproduction made long after the original pieces designed and made by Thomas Chippendale in the 18th century. “Adam taste” is even more confusing. There were two Adam brothers who died in the 1790s. Their work is now called the “style of the Brothers Adam” or “Adam style.” It was popular in the late 1760s. The brothers designed the building, then designed and made all the furnishings, including fireplace mantels, fixtures, fittings, carpets and, of course, furniture. The look spread to Scotland and Russia, and inspired Federal style in the United States. The brothers admired and adapted the classical designs of Greece and Rome. They wrote a book wit h t heir engraved designs, which made their ideas available to everyone. Pastel color combinations of green, blue, yellow, lilac, pink and terra-cotta were

possible with new, affordable, lighter paint colors. The rooms had classical scenes on the walls along with swags, ribbons and plaques. This settee in the style of the Brothers Adam is made in a simple shape of paint-decorated satinwood with a caned back, arms and seat. It sold for $1,250. *** Q: As a young boy, my husband received a Popeye doorstop. He’s had it since about 1939. It says “1929, King Feature SYN” on it. Can you tell us anything about it and its worth? It’s certainly a keepsake! A: Popeye first appeared in 1929 in a comic strip called “Thimble Theatre.” The character and the comic strip were created by Elzie Crisler Segar and distributed by King Features Syndicate. Popeye became a hit with readers and is still a popular character. He has appeared in comic books, cartoons, a full-length movie featuring Robin Williams as Popeye, on a postage stamp, and on toys and novelty items. The Popeye doorstop was made by Hubley Manufacturing Company, which was in business in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, from 1894 to

1965. The date on your doorstop is the copyright date for the character, not the date it was made. Popeye collectibles are sought after and bring high prices. The value of your doorstop is about $2,000 if the paint is in good condition. *** CURRENT PRICES Peters & Reed vase, brown, green, vines, column shape, 12 inches, $15. Tri-County Electric C ooperative has announced that the Illinois electric cooperatives in 2020 will award eleven academic scholarships to high school seniors through a memorial scholarship fund designed to financially assist deserving students in the “electric cooperative family.â€?  In addition, a twelfth scholarship – to assist with costs in attending an electric lineworker school – will also be offered. The total of twelve scholarships of $2,000 each will be awarded in 2020 through the Thomas H. Moore Illinois Electric C o o p e r at i v e s ( I E C ) Memorial Scholarship Program. Six scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors who are the sons or

daughters of an Illinois e l e c t r i c c o op e r at i ve member receiving service from the cooperative. A seventh scholarship, the Earl W. Struck Memorial S cholarship, will b e awarded to a student who is the son or daughter of an Illinois electric cooperative employee or director. Four additional scholarships are reserved for students enrolling full-time at a twoyear Illinois community college who are the sons or daughters of Illinois electric cooperative members, employees or directors. The twelfth annual scholarship, the “LaVern a n d No l a Mc E nt i re Lineworker’s Scholarship, is a $2,000 scholarship that will help pay for costs to attend the lineworker’s

school conducted by the Association of Illinois Electric Cooperatives in conjunction with Lincoln Land Community College, Springfield, Ill. Sons and d au g ht e r s of c o - o p members; relatives of co-op employees or directors; and individuals who have served or are serving in the armed forces or National Guard are all eligible to apply for the lineworker’s scholarship. “We hope to assist electric cooperative youth while honoring past rural electric leaders with these scholarships, says General Manager Marcia Scott. “ Tri-C ounty Electric Cooperative and the other Illinois electric cooperatives are always seeking ways to make a difference

in our communities. One of the best ways we can do that is by helping our youth through programs like this one. In addition, we are very pleased to offer the electric lineworker’s scholarship. It will benefit not only electric cooperative youth but also those fine men and women who have ser ved their countr y through their military service and may now be wanting to become a trained lineworker.â€? Illinois Hunters Reminded to Put Safety First Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) is reminding hunters to make safety their first priority as they head to the field for the state’s firearm deer, upland game, waterfowl and other busy hunting seasons. “We want hunters to enjoy all the opportunities available here in Illinois, with hopes for a safe and successful hunting season this fall, said Illinois Department of Natural Resources Director Colleen Callahan. “While we enjoy and celebrate Illinois’ hunting heritage, we want everyone – from experienced, veteran hunters to those who may be new to hunting – to always think safety first. The IDNR Office of Law Enforcement, which administers the state’s Hunter

Safety Education Program, has investigated six hunting incidents so far during 2019, three of which involved hunters falling from elevated tree stands or falling while climbing into or out of tree stands. In 2018, there were 19 hunting incidents reported in all hunting seasons in Illinois. Among the hunting incidents reported last year, 14 involved tree stands. “Hunters should use a Fall Arrest System (FAS) safety harness, no matter the type of elevated stand they are using, said Jerry Costello, director of the IDNR Office of Law Enforcement. “Statistics show that in most of the mishaps involving elevated stands, hunters were not using a fall restraint system. When utilizing a tree stand, hunters should check that their stand is installed properly. They should check the harness and straps and replace worn straps if needed; and, check

the ladder and other equipment before use to make sure they are in working order. They also should be aware of weather conditions that could make stands and steps slippery. Hunters should have their cellphones within easy reach to call for help, if needed. Hunters can review tree stand safety online at http://www.huntercourse. com/treestandsafety/ Safety educators and IDNR Conservation Police also remind everyone hunting with a firearm to: • Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, and never assume a firearm is unloaded; • Always point a firearm in a safe direction; • Be sure of the target, and make sure there are no other hunters, homes, buildings, vehicles or other animals beyond the target; and • Keep their finger out of the trigger guard and off the trigger until they are ready to shoot.

Other safety considerations include ensuring heating sources are properly ventilated in hunting cabins and boats, wearing appropriate, high visibility clothing while hunting and being familiar with the area being hunted. Illinois’ busiest hunting season, the seven-day firearm deer season, begins on Friday through Sunday, Nov. 22-24, and will conclude Thursday through Sunday, Dec. 5-8. The Illinois Archery Deer Season opened Oct. 1 and continues through Jan. 19, 2020. Archery deer season is closed during the firearm deer weekends except in those counties where firearm deer hunting is not permitted. For more details on Illinois deer, waterfowl, upland game, furbearer and other hunting seasons this fall and winter, check the Illinois Digest of Hunting and Trapping Regulations at https://www.dnr.illinois. gov/hunting/Documents/ HuntTrapDigest.pdf

He earned a teaching certificate from California’s Christ College Irvine (now Concordia University Irvine) and returned to his native southwestern Illinois to teach at Metro East Lutheran High School in Edwardsville before launching his political career.

We appreciate his service to the state of Illinois and to our country as our representative in Washington, DC. We also appreciate his military service to our countr y,” Chancellor Pembrook said. “Today’s announcement is exciting for SIUE in that it will provide materials for future students to study and research, creating richer political science and history resources for our students. “Congressman Shimkus and many members of his family are SIUE alumni, so his contribution to Lovejoy Library at SIUE makes great sense. Wow, what a week it was! • Televised impeachment inquiry hearings • Roger Stone found guilty • Presidential pardons • New 2020 candidates • Stock market breaks 28,000 First up, the televised impeachment inquiry hearings began last Wednesday and are chaired by “Shifty” Adam Schiff. The first day involved testimony from Bill Taylor, top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine, and George Kent, the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. It didn’t take long to realize neither had any direct knowledge of any wrongdoing by President Trump. Everything was second- and third-hand information. Congressman Jim Jordan read from a previously released transcript that read li ke: “S ome one told someone that someone said something about someone telling the story about...” You get it. Like the old game of whispering a secret in someone’s ear and whispering it along to ten people, and the resulting secret is nothing like the first. The Republicans even questioned why these individuals were called to testif y. C ongressman Jordan even joked to Mr. Taylor, “And you’re their star witness?” The Democratic line is they are slowly building a case (I thought the idea was to find the truth, not produce a suspense thriller). Wednesday’s hearings

were absolutely a waste of time, but I shouldn’t be surprised since wasting time seems to be commonplace in Washington. Nothing new came out of Wednesday’s hearing. Then came Friday’s (I guess they couldn’t meet Thursday for some reason) testimony from former Ukraine Ambassador Marie Yovanovitch (2016–2019), who had been called back to Washington and reassigned in April 2019, when the new Ukrainian President was elected. Again, no firsthand testimony was available from the witness. The Friday “Television Show” seemed to be a love fest, while both Democrats and Republicans spent part of their allotted time thanking her for her long 30 years of service, and Democrats asking her how she felt about the reassignment and offering condolences for what happened to her. But I can’t say nothing came out of Friday’s televised hearings, although you won’t hear it from the lame stream media. 1) In talking about the hard job of ambassadors and their staff, she invoked the names of Benghazi Ambassador Chris Stevens and his staff and placed herself in that same group. A bad comparison, that didn’t play well. 2) Those watching the hearings saw Chairman Schiff gavel down or “suspend” Republicans multiple times without valid reasons. 3) One of those “gavel

downs” was when Schiff was asked to release transcripts of private meetings not yet released to Republicans. 4) The Ukraine ambassador to the U.S. has repeatedly denigrated President Trump in public. 5) One member of the Ukrainian parliament in 2016 said, “Most of us are in Hillary Clinton’s corner, not Trump’s.” 6) During Jim Jordan’s questioning of Ambassador Yovanovitch, she didn’t understand his question and said something to the effect that Hillary Clinton’s campaign was not involved in 2016 in Ukraine. To which Jordan smiled and said, “That’s not the question I asked you.” 7) For Ambassador Yovanovitch’s confirmation hearing in 2016, the Obama Administration provided a handbook on how to answer questions. One was how to handle Hunter Biden’s role with Burisma. 8) A star is born! Republican Congresswoman Elise Stefanik of New York, asked pointed questions, was tough on Schiff and was one of the Republicans interviewed after the meeting. She corrected a report that said, “So, you think the hearings are a farce.” Her response was “Adam Schiff is making this hearing a farce.” I couldn’t agree more! 9) Following the public hearing, the Intel Committee held private hearings downstairs. On to Roger Stone. Roger

Stone was found guilty on seven counts. Stone was supposedly directly involved in the WikiLeaks release during the 2016 Presidential campaign. Sentencing is in February 2020. His attorneys will probably appeal the decision. Will President Trump pardon him? Speaking of pardons, on Friday, the week of Veterans Day, President Trump pardoned two service members accused of war crimes in Afghanistan, and restored the rank of a Navy Seal who was acquitted of murder in Iraq. Pardoned was First Lt. Clint Lorance who had been in prison for six years following a 2013 conviction. The other pardoned was Major Mathew Golsteyn, who was awaiting trial in 2020. President Trump restored the rank of Special Warfare Operator Chief Edward Gallagher, a Navy Seal, who had been convicted of posing with the corpse of an enemy combatant. On to the 2020 Presidential election. Two more in the Democratic field? Deval Patrick, the former governor of Massachusetts (2007–2015), announced his run for President last Thursday. In addition, former two-term mayor of New York Michael Bloomberg’s formal announcement should be coming soon? On continuing good economic news, the stock market reached above 28,000 last week. Until next week. To comment on this or any column in The Shopper’s Weekly, please mail to: Editor, P.O. EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

As a Thief in the Night Recently, I saw this news alert on Facebook, “Bible prophecy is unfolding right before our eyes, but the world to too blind to see it.” The apostles believed, taught, and lived as if Jesus could come in their lifetime. After 2,000 years, how much closer are we to the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ from heaven? The Word of God tells us in several scriptures that Jesus Christ will return to earth as a thief in the night. It will be unexpectantly and take most of the inhabitants of the earth by surprise and unprepared. Why would Jesus refer to his second coming as a thief in the night? How can we be ready to meet King Jesus when he returns? THE PROMISE OF CHRIST’S RETURN IS VERY CLEAR. Jesus said, “I go to prepare a place for you and if I go. . . I will

come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am there you may be also.” (John 14:1-6) When Jesus ascended back into heaven, two angels announced that he would return. “This same Jesus, who is taken up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as you have seen him go into heaven.” (Acts 1:9-11) Peter also spoke of the promise of Christ’s return. As a thief in the night. (II Peter 3:8-13) A thief comes by surprise in the night. When Jesus comes, most will be taken unaware. Be ready! THE PROPHECIES IN GOD’S WORD foretell the coming of Christ again from heaven. The prophecies of Christ’s first coming were fulfilled in minute detail; so also, will his second coming. There are numerous prophecies concerning the second coming of Christ. (Zechariah 14:4-5; Jude 1:14) Jesus said that he would come as a thief to those

not watching. (Revelation 3:3) “Behold, I am coming as a thief. Blessed is he who watches and keeps his garments, lest he walk naked and they see his shame.” (Revelation 16:15) Paul warned, “For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night. For when they say, ‘Peace and safety!’ Then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labor pains upon a pregnant woman and they shall not escape.” (I Thessalonians 5:2-3) THE PARABLE OF JESUS CONCERNING THE THIEF IN THE NIGHT warns us to be ready. “Watch therefore, for you do not know what hour your Lord is coming. But know this, that if the master of the house had known what hour the thief would come, he would have watched and not allowed his house to be broken into. Therefore, you also be ready for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect.” (Matthew 24:4244) THE PURIT Y OF THOSE WATCHING AND WAITING FOR CHRIST’S RETURN will give them entrance into heaven. “These are the ones who . . . washed their robes and made them white in the blood of the

Lamb.” (Revelation 6:1415) Paul prays, “Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (I Thessalonians 5:23) Only repentance and faith in the sacrifice of Christ on the cross can make us ready at his return. THE PRAYERS OF THOSE AWAITING CHRIST ’S RETURN ASCEND INTO HEAVEN. Jesus told us to watch and pray. “Watch therefore for you do not know the hour when the Son of Man comes.” (Matthew 24:32-25:13) “Watch and pray always that you be accounted worthy to escape all these things that shall come to pass and to stand before the Son of Man.” (Luke 21:36) The Lord is coming as a thief in the night. Are you ready to meet him? Pray: “Lord Jesus, forgive me of my sins. I put faith in your blood shed on the cross to wash away my sins. Help me to be watching and ready for your soon return.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A rejection of your attempt to be friendly leaves you with two choices: Try again, or give up. If you want to make another effort, go slowly. Let things develop without pressure. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It could be a problem dealing with unfamiliar people who do things differently from what you’re used to. But rely on that strong sense of purpose to get you through this difficult period. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) To avoid neglecting a personal matter because of a demanding new workplace schedule, start prioritizing immediately. Knowing how to apportion your time takes a little while to set up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) It won’t be easy to avoid some of the pressures that come with change. Best advice: Take things a step at a time, and you’ll be less likely to trip up while things are in a chaotic state. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A muchtalked-about workplace change could be coming soon. Be sure to get all the details involved in the process, and once you have them, you can decide how you want to deal with it. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might still believe that your trust was betrayed, although the facts would appear to prove the opposite. But by the week’s end you should learn something that will help set the record straight. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Holiday plans could be a challenge because of shifting circumstances. But a more settled period starts by midweek, allowing you to firm up

your plan-making once and for all. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The facts continue to be on your side. So make use of them in dealing with any challenge to your stated position. Also, open your mind to the offer of help from an unlikely source. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) There could still be a communication problem holding up the resolution of a troublesome situation. Stay with it, and eventually your message will get through and be understood. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) A possible change in your workplace schedule might create a chaotic situation for a while. But once things begin to settle down, you might find that this could work to your advantage. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A recent job-linked decision might need to be reassessed because of the possibility of finding benefits you might have overlooked. Check out all related data to help in the search. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A personal situation you agreed to might not be as acceptable to the other person involved in the matter. Avoid pressuring and bullying. Instead, seek common ground by talking things through. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a gift for touching people’s minds as well as their hearts. You would make an outstanding educator. © 2019 King Features Synd., Inc.
