Outside the window, overlooking the library of Middletown High School South, a daydreaming student in Ileanna Laurarri's Spanish class could capture a glimpse of the football field and the concession stands that form a neat ring around the perimeter. On most days, she would offer you some sort of rebuke, "mira!" but on this particular day she stopped and looked out the window, too, then told a story. "One morning, the teacher in our class made all of the students line up against the wall and turn our backs. She then told us to pray to God to give us ice cream. So we prayed. Then she said turn around. And there was no ice cream. Some of us started to cry. I was 6 years old." You know how a good story can quiet a room? The normally rowdy class was silent. "Our teacher, she told us to turn around a second time, facing the wall. She then told us to

With that, she looked at me, and said, "Now, when I ask you, how to ask me in Spanish 'where is the library,' are you going to remember?" So, Yasiel Puig, when everyone was heckling you in the outfield that one afternoon in Kansas City, now you know the full story and reason as to why that one person eating an ice-cream cone in the bleachers, that guy who made you stop, turn around and look up in bewilderment, yelled out "Hey Yasiel! Donde esta la biblioteca?" Cuba, if you haven't heard by now, is no longer a closed-off nation for America. We just ran up our flag there a couple weeks ago. To most Americans, when we think about Cuba, we think about Kennedy and the Bay of Pigs. The Cuban Missile Crisis. Very good cigars and rum. Airlifts. Gitmo. Little Elian. For Cuban athletes and 4. Cu b a n - A m e r i c a n s , thoughts of Havana dredge up far different feelings. For some, it meant risking your life and defecting in order to play baseball in America. Think about the stress you would feel facing a Major League hitter or pitcher on your best day. Now think about it with the thought that your family left behind may be in severe trouble because of your decision. There's a heartbreak there for many Cubans that is hard to understand. Their love of country is great, but they would have loved to participate in the 1984 and 1988 Olympic Games. They would have loved to have seen the late, great Teofilo Stevenson fight Muhammad Ali. It almost happened, but Stevenson turned the fight down, saying the millions of dollars offered him was not worth losing the love of the millions of Cubans in Havana. Well, now there will be plenty of things off the field to settle between America, Cuba and Cuban Americans. But finally, at long last, it doesn't mean people will have to risk their lives in order to play a game, and everybody can have an obscenely overpriced icecream cone. SHIMKUS TO SEEK RE-ELECTION TO CONGRESS
MEET AND GREET HELD FOR DR. PENNY QUINN
“It is an honor and privilege to represent the people of the 15th Congressional District in Washington, DC, and I do not take that responsibility lightly,” said John Shimkus upon announcing he intends to seek re-election. “The process starts very early in Illinois,” he noted. “Beginning September 1, petitions can be passed in order to gain placement on the March primary ballot.” Shimkus cited his experience as a senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee for the accomplishments he has been able to make this year. The full U.S. House has passed two bills sponsored by Shimkus – the DOTCOM Act and the TSCA Modernization Act. The DOTCOM Act challenged the Obama Administration’s unilateral decision to give away control over the Internet; however, they have backed down from the original
New Kaskaskia College President Dr. Penny Quinn was the subject of a meet and greet reception in the Lifelong Learning Center on campus Thursday, August 27, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. A large number of community leaders and wellwishers were on hand to meet and welcome Dr. Quinn, who took over the Kaskaskia College presidenc y from Dr. Jim Underwood upon his retirement on June 30. KC Marketing Director Travis Henson acted as emcee for the event. Dr. Penny Quinn comes to Kaskaskia College from Barton Community College in Great Bend, Kansas, where she served as VicePresident. She brings to KC 25 years of experience in public education and 23 years’ experience in the community college system. She earned a Bachelor’s degree from Ball State University, a Master’s degree from Washington State University, and a Doctorate from Indiana State University. Dr. Quinn has served as instructor, department chair, director of student retention, honors program director, federal grant coordinator, and vice-president of Instruction and Student Services. She brings a great deal of leadership qualities and experience to her position as President of KC.
plan after the bill passed. “The Toxic Control Substances Act is a 1970s relic that does not work,” Shimkus noted. “Many years were spent to get to this point, and many other legislators tried, but I was able to get this through my committee and the full House with just one no vote.” In announcing his reelection bid, Shimkus also reaffirmed his support for the pro-life movement, Second Amendment rights, and our local natural resources such as coal and oil. Shimkus is married to Karen since 1987. They reside in his hometown of Collinsville and have three sons. He is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy (BS) and Southern Illinois University Edwardsville (MBA). Also supporting Congressman Shimkus’ reelection are members of the General Assembly that serve overlapping territory, including State Senators

Dr. Penny Quinn holds a piece of handcrafted artwork that was part of a gift ensemble presented to her by the College Cabinet, while VicePresident Nancy Kinsey looks on. Speaking of what she has learned about Kaskaskia College so far, Dr. Quinn said, “In my experience, lots of schools say they are a family, but KC really is. Whenever there is a need, everyone pitches in without having to be asked.” On her personal philosophy, Dr. Quinn said that “I am not a dictator; I am a listener. The staff has a lot of great ideas, and we are working to see what can be accomplished moving forward.” Some of Dr. Quinn’s goals include increasing financial reserves, looking at bolstering the infrastructure of the physical campus, and finding opportunities to increase enrollment and bolster retention. She also wants to increase the connection between staff and faculty by having more social interactions.

Another focus is economic development of the region. One of KC’s missions is to determine the needs of area employers and communities and to implement training programs for students and employees to meet those needs. Aside from her professional background and goals, Dr. Quinn shared some personal details. She originally hails from rural Indiana, and is a first generation college graduate, with her father and mother attending school only until the eighth and ninth grades, respectively. “Providing access to students who would otherwise not have opportunities is why I am so committed to the community college vision,” she said. She enjoys reading and crafts, although she currently doesn’t have much time for either, she said. Her goal for this weekend is to prepare two tables for refinishing. Some of Dr. Quinn’s family and friends attended the event, including her youngest daughter Brianna, son-in-law Jared, and young granddaughter Avery. Her best friend since 1982, Paula Daum, also made the trip from Indiana. “When I met Penny, we were college roommates our freshman year,” Daum said. “She is a quality person who I knew I wanted to keep in my life. She is bright, capable, and articulate. Congratulations to Kaskaskia College for hiring the best.”

There are some great amateur photographers out there, and they hope you will share your talents with them. The first place winner will receive $75.00 cash plus a framed print of their winning
photo. Second place winner will receive $50.00 cash and third place will receive four complimentary 3-Day passes to Balloon Fest 2016. I had lunch with a friend Thursday in Mt. Vernon. I admitted to him I'm totally bored with this campaign, and he confessed the same. Just think, we have five months to go before anything major happens! My friend and I are both serious political junkies. He falls toward the liberal side with a capital "L" and I'm conservative with a slight lean toward the liberal side. Okay, a very slight lean :-) But enough of the humor. We both admitted we're sick of the same ole, same ole name calling, and we're both ready for both parties to get on to the serious issues with real solutions. But let's look at the most recent numbers. As of late last week, on the GOP side Trump remains number one with Dr. Ben Carson running neck and neck in Iowa. I have to admit Dr. Carson has been running an impressive campaign in Iowa. But the biggest development is he's building support from Iowa's social conservative base. In the number three spot is Marco Rubio, in fourth is Jeb Bush and, number five is Ted Cruz. I really think before long we will start seeing a few of the 17 GOP candidates fall away. My prediction: Among the first few will be Rick Perry, Lindsey Graham and of course George Pataki and Jim Gilmore. So where is Carly Fiorina? She's coming in number 6! On to the Democrat side. Nothing much changes. Even though most don't trust her, Hillary Clinton is still in the lead! For me that's mind boggling, but look at the alternatives. Other than Bernie Sanders, a 73-yearold socialist, there aren't any. Frankly, I'll take Bernie over Hillary. And speaking of Hillary, I keep hearing from a number of Democrats that the email scandal isn't a big deal, which I disagree with. This is a woman that should be in jail, in my opinion. But let's look at the mistakes. To start with, Ms. Clinton made a bunch of mistakes just in the interaction with the media, especially during a recent press conference. According to the Washington Post below is a list of what she did wrong: #1) She sounds like a lawyer (but she is a lawyer). Her first response when she first addressed the existence of the private server back in
March was to insist that she is in no legal jeopardy. #2) She cast the whole thing as normal and everyday. But keep in mind, Clinton was the first Secretary of State in history to exclusively use a private email address and server while on the job. And she's running for President in 2016. Only a Clinton would be so bold. #3) She's dismissive. Yes, Ed Henry the reporter interrupted her. From the start she was highly annoyed with his line of questions and was unable to mask that fact. In other words, that look — Who do you think you are? How dare you ask that of me! #4) She's sarcastic. A perfect example is Clinton's response to whether she "wiped" the server "like with a cloth or something," demonstrating a lack of technological know how. I, for one, don't mind sarcasm unless it's tied to an issue that many people view as serious. #5) (The big one.) She's wrong! Especially, when leaving the press conference, she responded, "Nobody talks to me about it other than you guys," referring to the press. Guess what, 65% of those polled said Clinton did something wrong by using a private email server during here time as Secretary of State! So for those of you supporting Clinton, WAKE UP! She's an accident waiting to happen! The email below is from a reader of Politically Speaking. When are the candidates going to start addressing the real problems in this country? The answer is that the politicians never will. Neither party wishes to make any changes but both want to be in office so they can share in all the bribes — oops, contributions — big business gives them. They have a cushy part time job that makes them millionaires after a short time and neither party wants that to change. They have little knowledge or understanding of what it takes to turn this country around. You know we no longer have a country that is of the people, for the people, and by the people. That went away a long time ago. They talk a good talk but they don't walk a good walk nor will they ever. You have to want to change something first and they have no inten-

tion of doing anything. We need someone who loves this country and who knows what needs to be done and how to do it and you won't find any politician that fits that description. Trump has an agenda that is a good start but the question is, is he the one that could do it! Isn't it strange however, that the three leading candidates for the republican nomination are not politicians but from the business world? The polls show the people are fed up with the current government so there will never be a better time to make some major changes in Washington. Unfortunately, most Americans are not aware of the crisis facing our country today and for whatever the reason, busy, family, fun times, etc. they are ignorant of these facts. But they will vote because it is civic duty and many will vote for their party regardless or because they are living on entitlements; at least 140 million are receiving entitlements as of now. Aren't those politicians smart? If only there was some way to make them aware of all this before the next elections, then maybe we could get the changes that need to be made to save America. —Larry McCaskey And to the individual that sent me the email: What did Presidents Hoover, Truman, and Eisenhower have in common? It was deportation of illegals. The email said: Harry Truman deported over two million illegal aliens after WWII. In 1954 Ike deported 13 million Mexicans. And back during the great depression Hoover ordered the deportation of all illegal immigrants in order to make jobs for Americans. The truth is all three of these Presidents wrestled with a rising tide of illegal immigration, but the facts are: Hoover did not use immigration policy to "create jobs" and never "ordered the deportations of all illegal aliens." During his four-year presidency, roughly 121,000 persons were officially deported or induced to leave through threat of deportation. Truman did not try to "create jobs for returning veterans" by ordering deportations. In fact, he signed legislation protecting the
rights of Mexican migrant laborers recruited legally to help harvest U.S. crops, and was unable to win congressional approval of measures to crack down on employers of illegal immigrants. During his nearly eight years in office, about 3.4 million were deported or left "voluntarily" under threat of deportation. Eisenhower did not deport 13 million Mexicans. Only one-tenth that number was ever claimed by the federal officials in charge of "Operation Wetback," and even that figure is criticized as inflated by guesswork. Officially, just over 2.1 million were recorded as having been deported or having departed under threat of deportation.
And last but certainly not least, addressing the war on police, I truly believe most officers go into law enforcement because they care, and these senseless recent murders of police officers are done by low life cowards. Police officers have more than one name. The other names are Daddy, husband, son, grandfather, grandson, granddaughter, uncle, brother, sister and friend. They are serving communities because they are devoted. And many have devoted their lives to protect, serve and make communities safer for those of us that are honest. But unfortunately, today among the 800,000 federal, state and local police
officers many are questioning their career choice. I, for one, have chosen to stand up against the anti-cop gibberish spewing from those who take their freedoms for granted. What condition would this country be in if it weren't for law enforcement? This anti-cop climate has to stop! Until next week. BILL MILNER SEEKING NOMINATION FOR MARION COUNTY STATE'S ATTORNEY
Influential local attorney Bill J. Milner announced Tuesday that he is seeking the Republican nomination for the office of Marion County State's Attorney. "As an attorney who works in this court house I see first-hand where we can improve how crime is handled in Marion County," states Milner. "As a person who lives in this county and as a person who has pretty much his whole family living in this county, it's important to me that we make those improvements and build a safer community for all our families." As State’s Attorney Milner says he would work closely with state, local and
federal law enforcement to become more effective and more aggressive in attacking the drug trade in Marion County. “I will work as a team with law enforcement to get this job done, and I will take advantage of any state and federal assistance available to help us get that job done while giving our local taxpayers a break,” Milner explained. Regarding synthetic drugs, Milner says he sees shortcomings in laws passed recently, and would work with local lawmakers to amend those laws and improve prosecution rates. A life-long resident of Marion County, Milner has
more than 29 years experience as a trial lawyer, having tried criminal and civil cases in both the state and federal courts. Milner has handled appeals cases before the Illinois Appellate Court and even before the Illinois Supreme Court. A memb er of t he American Trial Lawyers Association, Order of Barristers and Illinois State Bar Association, Milner earned his Law Degree from the Southern Illinois University-Carbondale Law School, after earning his Undergraduate Degree in Political Science from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.

Choose A Material Type It's important to consider the material type of your door based on your climate, the style of your home and your personal preference. Patio doors can come in three different material types: • Wood creates a warm, natural look and can be stained or painted to complement most home styles and decor. • Fiberglass is the most durable option and is well suited for extreme heat and cold climates while also providing the look of a painted wood door. • Vinyl offers added energy efficiency, lowmaintenance and affordable quality.
Select Additional Features And Options You can personalize your patio door with added features to create more style and function. Try out different stains and finishes, add stylish nickel hardware, or select a patio door with blinds, shades or grilles tucked between the panes of glass. UPGRADE YOUR ENTRYWAY WITH SIMPLE DIY PROJECTS You only get one chance to make a first impression and that first statement for your home begins with y o u r f r o n t d o o r. Fortunately, there are a few simple projects to help welcome your family and friends into your home with style. Start Fresh With A New Door Sometimes the simplest answer is to begin with a clean slate and replace your front door. From single doors to double-door options, those accented with decorative glass or transoms and sidelights, it's easy to find one that fits your budget and your style. Once you have a look, pick a material such as wood, fiberglass or steel. Don't forget to look for an ENERGY STAR qualified option to help keep your home comfortable.
Pick A Standout Color For Your Front Door Sticking with your current door? A fresh coat of paint will do wonders. Try a bold color to brighten a neutral color scheme. Pick a color that coordinates with your home's exterior with a pop of contrast to add eye appeal. Update Your Hardware Why stop with a fresh coat of paint? Refresh old doors with new hardware. Choose handles and doorknockers that complement your home's exterior design. Pella offers hardware in a variety of finishes to instantly upgrade exterior doors. WHY YOU SHOULD AERATE YOUR LAWN THIS FALL
Are you looking for custom designed, luxurious kitchen bath and interior spaces?
“Ideal aeration timing depends on turf type and geography,” says Lloyd Von S cheli ha of E xmark Manufacturing, a manufacturer of turf care equipment. “But annual aeration provides valuable agronomic benefits to virtually any turfgrass.” With that in mind, here are some tips from the experts at Exmark to get the most benefits from aeration:

Fall is a great time to aerate the lawn. Whether you do it yourself or hire a lawn care professional to do it for you, aeration at least once per year provides a number of benefits to your lawn, say experts.

Aeration also promotes better soil drainage, which helps keep disease at bay and allows more water to percolate into the soil from rain or irrigation, meaning less runoff and more water getting where it needs to go.

The main benefit is to relieve compaction and increase pore space, which promotes gas exchange and microbial activity in the soil and creates a better, more supportive environment for lawn health and vitality.
Timing Ideally, aeration should take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preceding dormancy. It’s typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, it’s best to aerate in late spring or early fall.

AERATE (Continued from previous page)
Proper Equipment Use gear that meets the needs of your lawn. A 30-inch stand-on aerator makes quick work of even large properties with the ability to easily maneuver around landscape features.
Follow-Up After aeration, it’s a good idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or overseed if needed. Be careful not to apply a pre-emergent if you plan to overseed, however, as it will prevent the new seed from growing.

TIPS TO FINDING THE RIGHT CONTRACTOR Home improvement projects tend to be costly. Because of the considerable financial investment homeowners must make when improving their homes, it’s important to find a contractor you can trust and feel comfortable with. The vast majority of professional contractors are trustworthy and willing to work with homeowners to help them design the homes of their dreams. But there are still some tips homeowners can keep in mind as they begin their search for a contractor.

Work Only With Licensed Contractors Licensed contractors have been verified as legitimate by your local governing body, removing much of the fears homeowners have with regard to finding trustworthy contractors. Unlicensed contractors may not be insured or bonded, and their esti-

mates may be lower than their licensed competitors’ because they do not contribute to unemployment. Licensed contractors often are subjected to criminal background checks as well, calming homeowners’ fears about inviting strangers into their homes. Get Written Estimates Before hiring a particular firm, get written estimates from several contractors. Some contractors will charge fees for the estimate, but they must inform you of those fees before the estimates are provided. Compare estimates so you can get a better grasp of how much your project will cost. While cost is important, try to avoid choosing a contractor based on cost alone, as a good rapport with a contractor who may be more expensive might make spending a little more money worth it.
Ask For Recommendations Word-of-mouth is great when looking for contractors. Oftentimes, a contractor’s best friends are his past clients. Ask friends or neighbors for recommendations on local contractors, inquiring about prices as well as each particular contractor’s demeanor and openness to suggestions. Contact your local Office of Consumer Affairs to check each contractor’s complaint history. Make Sure The Contract Is Specific When you choose a contractor, make sure the contract he or she provides is very specific, going into great detail about the specifics of the project. This contract should spell out the materials and equipment that will be used, as well as the final cost of the project, the payment schedules while the project is
ongoing and the work schedule. Keep Track Of All Paperwork And Pay By Check Once you sign the contract, create a folder where you can store all paperwork. Scan each document so you can store them on your computer as well. When payments must be made, never pay in cash. Pay by check and do not pay for the entirety of the project upfront, opting instead to pay at predetermined intervals spelled out in your contract. Nerves often come into play when hiring a home contractor, but homeowners who take a careful approach to the hiring process will likely end up hiring a trustworthy contractor who does great work.

Overeating Puppy Isn’t So Cute DEAR P AW ’ S CORNER: I watched a “cute” commercial today where a toddler sneakily pours dog food on the floor for the family puppy to eat. I think it was really irresponsible of the dog food company to show that without noting the risks to dogs that overeat, particularly puppies. Maybe a better commercial would be the mom rushing the dog to the veterinarian to make sure he doesn’t die of bloat. Why would the company present this as cute? — Shocked in Syracuse, New York DEAR SHOCKED: You don’t need me to answer why the pet food company presented the commercial
in that way. Cute sells, right? Because you’re concerned about the way the situation is presented, with no apparent consequences for the puppy (bloat is a possible risk for dogs that eat a large amount of food in one sitting), you can contact the company either through its website or in writing. Now, what if that situation happened in real life? Your toddler gets into the dog food and sits there happily feeding the family pet, for who knows how long before you discover them. You’ll need to monitor the dog closely. Bloat, known clinically as GDV (gastric dilatation-volvulus), happens when a dog’s stomach enlarges, twists and puts pressure on surrounding organs. It’s a very serious condition that can cause death in just hours. Overeating is one possible cause of bloat. If your dog’s stomach is distended, it tries to belch

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Cupid is strong in the Aries aspect this week, with the cherub opening romantic possibilities for single Lambs, and strengthening ties ‘twixt loving pairs already in a caring relationship. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your dramatic flair might make things more interesting as you recount an event to your colleagues. But be careful not to exaggerate reality to the point that facts and fancy combine to form fiction. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) You love to talk, and this week you should get lots of chances to share your thoughts with people who will not only pay attention to what you have to say, but will want to hear more. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) The pattern of recent changes could begin to shift from mostly workplace-related events to more personal matters. Continue to keep an open mind as you prepare to deal with them. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An opportunity for work-related travel could be just what the Terrific Tabby needs to get a new perspective on a balky situation. The trip also could prove to be personally rewarding. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You might want to suggest resolving an old disagreement before it can affect a matter expected to come up for discussion. It’s always best to start with a clean slate. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) The week favors combining dollops of
creativity and practicality to work out both professional and personal problems. A longtime friend could have something of note to suggest. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Some surprising facts could come to light if you decide to probe deeper into an “opportunity” than you might usually do. What you’ll learn could determine what you’ll earn. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Someone close to you might seek your counsel. Hear him/ her out, but hold the line at giving actual advice until you get credible answers to all your questions. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) What seems to be an overwhelming workplace project can be dealt with quite well if you handle one category at a time. Things will soon begin to fall into place. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) A personal matter might need more of your time than you had expected. Try to prioritize between your many outside commitments and your domestic responsibilities. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) A developing situation still needs more time to grow, and more time to study before you can plunge in and make some attention-getting waves.
