Dear Editor Our city government never ceases to amaze me; the city council approved a crematorium in downtown at the last council meeting. What amazes me is their double standard; over the last year or so we have heard these new buzz words being used by our city government to get their way in restricting our rights by passing any ordinance they wish, under these buzz words, "quality of life." Our city has used those words to pass new rules on landlords, costing renters more money for repairs that sometimes are just ridiculous. They, our city council, have used the quality of life term to spend untold millions of our tax dollars on bike trails that few citizens will ever use. By the way,
friends, you don't need a marked off bike lane to ride a bike on a street; white lines and little signs are a waste of money. But our city rulers don't stop there, they've spent $6 million on a swimming pool that just cost too much for the poor people of Mt. Vernon to use. Quality of life for the upper class, yes, but not so much for the poor kids. Their pursuit to make "quality of life" more than a buzz word is costing us more than most of us would approve if we just had a vote. In my view, our city system is broken, and "quality of life" is a joke. It was used just last year to start a leaf burning ban; we were told it's for cleaner air. Then this week, with two new council members seated in our government, they gave a funeral home

HELP COMMUNITIES PREPARE FOR EMERGENCIES BY DONATING BLOOD The American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to help their communities prepare for emergencies by giving blood during National
Preparedness Month this September. Becoming a regular blood donor is one way to help ensure communities are prepared for any emer-

gency, including those where blood transfusions are needed. The Red Cross also encourages the public to get prepared by making a disaster plan for their homes or work places. A sufficient blood supply is central to ensuring hospitals are prepared to meet patient needs in times of disaster, including the very personal ones that can happen any day. Because blood takes about 48 hours to be tested, processed and made available for patients, it’s the blood already on the shelves that can help save the day when emergencies occur. This month also marks the sixth year that the Red Cross and Sport Clips Haircuts have teamed up to help increase blood donations. Through the “Saving Lives Never Looked So Good” campaign, Sport Clips is thanking those who come to give blood in September with a coupon for a free haircut at participating Sport Clips locations. The coupon is valid through Nov. 8, 2015, and will be sent to donors via email a few days after their donation. Every two seconds someone in the U.S. needs blood, and volunteer
donors are the only source of blood for patients needing transfusions. The Red Cross needs blood donors of all types — especially those with types AB, O negative, B negative and A negative — to give blood regularly. To make an appointment to give blood, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-7332767). For information on planning for emergencies and preparedness training, visit redcross.org/prepare. Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Clinton County: Sept. 16, 1 p.m. - 6 p.m., American Legion Hall, 575 N. Main St., Breese. Sept. 17, 12 p.m. - 6 p.m., Carlyle Lake Visitors Center, 801 Lake Rd., Carlyle. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally
good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors in the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. To get started and learn more, visit redcrossblood.org/RapidPass and follow the instructions on the site. The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies about 40 percent of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a not-forprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission. While having lunch with a friend, Richard Freeman of Salem, we were comparing notes on the recent poll numbers, especially on the top two GOP candidates, Donald Trump and Dr. Ben Carson, with Trump number one and Carson catching up fast. I made the comment that I really liked Dr. Ben Carson and noted his common sense and intelligence, but that he is very soft spoken, which concerned me. Richard reminded me quickly of an old phrase that he believed fit Carson: "Speak softly and carry a big stick." When reminded, it made me look at the doctor differently, but it also reminded me of so many of Obama's red lines and what the opposite has done for our country. In other words, "Talk tough and don't carry a stick." Look where it's gotten us! Nowhere! However, back to the widespread use of the first saying. "Speak softly and carry a big stick" began with American President Theodore Roosevelt. In a letter to Harry L. Sprague, on January 26, 1900, he wrote, "Speak softly and carry a big stick; you will go far." The "Big Stick" ideology refers to Roosevelt's foreign policy. He described his style as "the exercise of intelligent forethought and of decisive action in advance of any likely crisis." In other words, beware, you have been forewarned, just the opposite of Obama's foreign policy. Roosevelt used military mu s cl e s e ve r a l t i m e s throughout his two terms. This included the Great White Fleet, 16 battle ships which peacefully circumnavigated the globe as an illustration of America's rising yet neutral prestige under his direction. And at the end of the Russo-Japanese War in 1905
Roosevelt leveraged his position as a strong but impartial leader in order to negotiate a peace treaty between the two nations. "Speaking softly" earned the President a Nobel Peace Prize the following year for his efforts. So with all that said, and not being a fan of Trump, if he's the chosen one for the GOP, I'm not ashamed to say I'll hold my nose and vote for Trump before I'll vote for Clinton! However, I hope it's someone like Ben Carson, or Marco Rubio or even Ted Cruz, hopefully all capable of speaking softly but carrying a big stick. On to the crisis of refugees. More than half are fleeing from Syria. Right now, Europe is facing the largest migrant crisis since WWII. More than 364,000 have arrived as of last week. But let's go back to what started this mass exodus. As much as I'm against war and was against Bush for sending troops in to Iraq because of misinformation, I was more against Obama pulling all troops out of Iraq after he took office. Iraq was stabilized, and in order to keep it that way, troops should have remained. A prime example would be South Korea. This move, which he was advised against, created a huge vacuum. Enter the movement and beginning of ISIS. And by the way, Clinton was part of this brainless action. Fast forwarding ahead: This government — Obama, with Clinton's help — went in and decapitated Libya's government in the same time frame. Then President Muammar Gaddafi was murdered. There's no doubt he was a tyrant, but Libya wasn't better off after our intervention, but rather worse off. It opened up everything from gun running
to the tragedy of Benghazi. And to make matters worse, Russia is the biggest supporter of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, and you can be assured Iran is also behind a lot of this chaos. And what do we do? We make a deal with Iran, a country that wants to destroy Israel and the U.S. as well! What a mess! Just before press time, Russia was calling on other nations to help arm the Syrian government, describing it as the most efficient force against ISIS. No wonder the Syrian people are fleeing. I'm the first to say this country is war weary. But I also believe there is a time for all things. Read Ecclesiastes Chapter 3, Verses 1 through 22, especially Verse 8: "A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace." In listening to Hillary lay out her plans for Syria, I thought too bad she wasn't smart enough to have a plan before the gates of Hell in the Middle East were opened (with her help as then Secretary of State). The biggest mistake is you don't draw red lines and not follow through. This administration has done just the opposite of "Speak softly and carry a big stick." A final thought: ISIS is not just an enemy; it's a movement and will need to be taken out in the area where it began, and air strikes won't do it!

Fresh herbs enhance foods in a way that's unmatched by any other ingredient. As long as I can remember I've put in a herb garden, and I put it to good use through the summer months. In the fall I dry what's left in the garden and use the herbs all winter. But keep in mind, many dried herbs are available in the spice section of the grocery store. Some of my favorite recipes are below.

(Italian Pizza And Hearth Bread) This is a pizza-like flatbread flavored with herbs and olive oil. Use herbs associated with Italian cuisine, such as oregano, basil and rosemary, in any combination. I love to combine basil with a little mozzarella cheese and thinly sliced tomatoes. 1/2 tsp. active dry yeast 1/2 tsp. salt 1/2 tsp. sugar 1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil 3/4 cup very warm (105°-110°F) water 2 T. fresh herb leaves 2¾ cups unbleached or all-purpose flour 1/2 tsp. kosher, or coarse, salt Sprinkle yeast and sugar into 1/2 cup very warm water. Let stand about 10 minutes, or until surface becomes bubbly. In large bowl, combine flour and salt. Make a well in center. Pour in yeast mixture and 1 T. olive oil. Stir well with wooden spoon or electric mixer. Continuing to stir, slowly add 1/4 cup very warm water. Dough will be soft and slightly sticky. Turn dough out onto very lightly floured surface. Knead for 10 minutes, adding a small spoonful of flour only if absolutely necessary. Put dough in warm (80°-85°F) place, loosely cover with plastic wrap sprayed with nonstick cooking spray or a damp cloth, and let rise until doubled in bulk, or about 1 hour. Turn dough out onto lightly floured surface and knead gently several times, then flatten out to a 10" circle. Place on an oiled baking stone, pizza pan or heavy cookie sheet. Press indentations with fingers to give it dimples. Loosely cover and let rise in warm place about 45 minutes, or until doubled in bulk. Heat oven to 425°F. Combine 3 T. olive oil and herbs in food processor, blender, or mortar and pestle until leaves are broken up and oil is fragrant. Pour herb-oil mixture over focaccia and rub gently into the surface. Sprinkle top with salt. Bake 15 minutes, then reduce heat to 400°F and bake 5 minutes more, or until golden brown. Let cool and cut into wedges. Yield: One 10" bread.
White Beans With Tomatoes, Thyme, Savory And Tarragon
1 lb. white kidney or Great Northern beans 2 T. Worcestershire sauce 1/4 cup canola oil 5 cups vegetable stock or canned 3 cups chopped yellow onions vegetable broth 6 garlic cloves, crushed 2½ pounds tomatoes, peeled, seeded, 1 bay leaf and chopped 5 (4") sprigs fresh thyme 3 T. chopped fresh tarragon leaves 3 (4") sprigs fresh savory 1/4 cup lemon juice 4 whole cloves 1 tsp. salt 1/2 cup dry white wine 1/2 tsp. ground black pepper 1/4 cup white wine vinegar Soak dried beans 12 hours in large bowl of cold water that covers them by at least 4 inches. Change water once, after 6 hours. Heat oil in large saucepan over medium-high heat. Add onions and garlic, and cook, stirring, about 8 minutes, or until soft. Stir in bay leaf, thyme, savory and cloves, and cook 2 to 3 more minutes, or until herbs are fragrant. Add beans, wine, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, stock or broth, and enough water to cover beans by 2 inches. Bring to boil, skim off foam, and reduce heat to low. Cover and cook until beans are tender, or about 2 hours. Stir in tomatoes, turn up heat to medium-high, and cook 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add tarragon and cook 3 minutes. Add lemon juice, salt, and pepper. Serve immediately. Yield: 8 servings
Roast Pork Loin Stuffed With Dried Apricots, Shallots And Sage
4 T. canola oil 1/2 cup brandy 1 lb. dried apricots, cut into 1/4" pieces 2 cups orange juice 2 T. chopped shallots 1½ cups coarse dry bread crumbs 4 scallions, cut into 1/4" slices 2 large eggs, lightly beaten, or 1/2 cup egg substitute 1/3 cup raisins 4- to 5-lb. boneless pork loin, trimmed 1 T. chopped fresh sage leaves Heat oven to 500°F. Heat 2 T. canola oil in skillet over medium-high heat and stir in apricots, shallots, scallions, raisins and sage. Cook about 2 minutes, or until sage is fragrant. Stir in brandy and simmer 1 minute. Stir in 1 cup orange juice, bring to boil, lower heat to medium, and reduce liquid by one-third. Remove from heat and stir in bread crumbs. Let cool. Stir in eggs. Cut pork loin in half lengthwise, leaving one side attached. Fold open and cut out a trough about 1" deep and 2" wide in center of each half. Fill troughs with bread crumb mixture. Fold the two halves together and tie with kitchen string. Heat remaining 2 T. oil in large ovenproof skillet or roasting pan over high heat. Add pork loin and brown on all sides. Pour in remaining 1 cup orange juice. Transfer to oven and cook 10 minutes. Reduce heat to 350°F. Basting every 20 minutes, cook for 1½ hours. Remove from oven and let stand 10 minutes. Cut into 1" slices and serve with pan juices. Yield: 8 to 10 servings.
Grilled Shrimp With Citrus And Herbs
2 limes, thinly sliced 1 tsp. dried hot red pepper flakes 1 lemon, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 3 T. olive oil 10 (4-inch) sprigs of fresh herbs 2 T. Galliano or anisette liqueur 2½ lbs. large shrimp, in the shell 1 T. tequila Combine all ingredients in large bowl or dish, cover, and refrigerate 4 to 6 hours, stirring occasionally. Prepare grill. Remove shrimp from marinade, place on metal skewer, and grill about 2 minutes on each side. Both sides should be red and center of head end opaque. By the Word of their Testimony Public enemy number one doesn’t have a poster hanging in the post office nor is he on the most wanted list of the FBI. Public enemy number one is more insidious, dangerous, and deceptive than any criminal or terrorist. Jesus called him the thief who comes to steal, kill, and destroy. (John 10:10) In Revelation 12 he is referred to as the great dragon, the serpent of old, called the devil and Satan, “who deceives the whole world.” (Revelation 12:7) Satan, who is called, “the accuser of our brethren,” will very soon be cast out of the heavens. We are given this warning, “Therefore, rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them. Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows he has a short time.” (Revelation 12:10-12) God has enabled His followers to overcome the onslaught of the devil, the accuser, with three powerful weapons. “And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their

testimony and they did not love their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11) The first weapon that defeats the devil and the power of sin is “the blood of the lamb.” Through the blood of the lamb, Jesus Christ, atonement for sin was made. The power of sin and death was defeated. The second weapon “the word of our testimony,” is how the power of the blood of Christ is activated in one’s life and situation. The third weapon, “they did not love their lives to the death,” is the pathway of discipleship for all followers of Christ. The word of your testimony can defeat the devil and route the enemy. Consider these aspects of the power of your testimony. TESTIFY TO THE P OW E R OF T H E BLOOD. The early believers overcame the accuser by testifying to the efficacy of the blood of Jesus. When the devil points out your sins to you, point him to the

cleansing blood of Jesus shed on the cross. Testify to the promises of God’s Word. (I John 1:7; Romans 8:25; Colossians 1:14; I Peter 1:2, 19; Revelation 1:5; 12:11) David prayed for cleansing from sin. (Psalm 51:710) David referred to the hyssop plant by which the Israelites applied the blood of the lamb to the doorposts of their homes, just as the power of the blood of Christ provides cleansing for believers. TESTIFY TO THE P OW E R OF T H E LORDSHIP OF CHRIST OVER YOUR LIFE. The devil has no power over a surrendered life. Have you surrendered your life totally to the Lord Jesus Christ? We are given this secret to defeating the accuser. “And loved not their lives to the death.” (Revelation 12:11) Confess Jesus as Lord. (Romans 10:9) Jesus called the rich young ruler to sell everything he had, give it to the poor, “and you will have treasure in heaven; and come, take up the cross and follow me.” (Mark 10:21) Is your treasure in heaven or on earth? Someone said, “He is Lord of all or not at all.” Examine the people that Jesus
called. They left everything to follow Christ. (Romans 12:1-2) Testify to the Lordship of Christ. TESTIFY TO WHAT THE LORD HAS DONE IN YOUR LIFE. The power of a personal testimony speaks volumes and gets people’s attention. The apostle Paul constantly shared his testimony of his Damascus road experience and how he was converted into a follower of Christ. You may not have had a dramatic Damascus road experience, but if you have had a born again life changing experience with Christ, God will use your testimony to touch and encourage others. The power of your personal testimony will strengthen your faith, bless others, and defeat the devil. “Let the redeemed of the Lord say so.” (Psalm 107:2) If the accuser of the brethren, the devil, is pushing you around, use these three powerful weapons — the blood of the Lamb, the word of your testimony, and not loving your life, even until death. But the best moves are made with lots of data to provide backup just in case you charge into an unexpected complication. A new relationship shows promise. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Sharing credit for a job well done is easy for you to do, but not necessarily for your partner. But fair is fair. Don’t let yourself be denied the right to have your contributions recognized. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Communication is important to help bridge a gap that can lead to problems at home and/or at the workplace. Find a way to get your points across before the breach becomes a chasm. LEO (July 23 to August 22) Relationships, whether business or personal, need to be watched carefully for signs of trouble. Any negative indications should be dealt with before they become too burdensome. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Congratulations. A more positive aspect highlights much of the Virgo’s week. You should find others more receptive to your suggestions, and also more likely to act on them. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) All work and little play could wear the

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Giving advice to those who just want validation for what they’re doing can be unsettling. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Cultivating a more positive attitude not only makes you feel better about yourself, but also has an upbeat effect on those around you, especially that certain someone.
