Kansas City Exceptionalism There is — or was, if you listen to the stylings of Donald Trump — such a thing as "American exceptionalism." I don't really know the textbook definition of that phrase, or its etymology, but I'm pretty sure that American exceptionalism makes it OK if I don't look it up and just go from the gut on this one. Here's a story: There was a great restaurant in Kansas City, long since gone because maybe it wasn't all that great, but one day the restaurant was pretty packed. In the door walks a notorious Kansas City football team executive and his exceptional new wife. He wants a table. His reservation, he is informed, isn't for another 20 minutes. He

flicks his left arm out as if he's pulling a switchblade, but it is not. It is an exceptional timepiece ... it's Swiss, not American, but exceptional nonetheless. "Yeah, well according to my $20,000 watch," he says to the hostess, "it's right now." The hostess blinks, so I cannot say that she did not bat an eyelash because she did. And she had long, black eyelashes. I'm guessing they were fake, but her response was pretty genuine classic. "Well ... I don't have a watch on, and I can tell you that it's always RIGHT NOW. And your table will be ready in 20 minutes. You're welcome to wait at the bar." He narrows his eyes and growls like a cartoon villain, but he deserved that and so he retreats to the well-appointed bar. The football executive orders a Chardonnay. His wife looks at the cocktail board and inquires about a few of the drinks and their ingredients. "What is triple sec?" she asks the bartender. His name is Sean. He is the best in the business. Truly exceptional. "It's three times the amount of normal sec," he responds. The executive narrows his eyes again and purses his lips. The wife is

bemused, waiting for the real answer I would think, but Sean doubles down. "Single sec is very weak. We won't carry it here." She gets the Cosmopolitan, and they both begin talking to other married couples, keeping Swiss time. Another bartender, Ally, is making a bright-red drink and conjuring up a name from Chiefs lore. "What's that?" asks the football executive. "It's the Len Dawson Cocktail," replies Ally. "It's one of our signature drinks." "The Len Dawson!" the football executive narrows his eyes again. If he keeps that up, they're gonna stay that way permanently. "Yep," she says, dipping a straw into the pint glass, extracting a sample and offering it up to the football executive, who leans over in a tentative manner. "It tastes just like Len Dawson," she promises. The bar has exceptional marble floors. They're Italian. It's funny how you don't notice them when you walk in, because you're looking up, but when a football executive pushes backward on his barstool really fast, you can actually hear the difference in the quality of flooring. They don't even scratch. Timing is everything. Waiting for him at the end of the screech is the hostess, two menus in hand. No doubt, an exceptional time was had by all. DONATE BLOOD, SUPPORT ORGAN TRANSPLANT PATIENTS AND OTHERS During Liver Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood and platelets to support liver transplant patients and others needing blood products. Liver transplants are the second most common type of transplant with more than 6,000 performed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery. For blood donor Amy Slattery, the need for blood hits close to home. Her mother received a liver transplant and needed more than 70 blood products during the surgery. “I donate to help others that needed blood like her,” said Slattery. “I donate in thanks to those who donate their blood products to help

save lives.” Volunteer donors like Slattery are the only source of blood for those in need of transfusions during transplants and other surgeries. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, A negative, B negative and AB blood. To make an appointment to donate blood, eligible donors are encouraged to download the new Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a download link, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed below. Jefferson County: Oct. 1, 7 a.m. - 5 p.m., Crossroads Community Hospital, 8 Doctors Park Rd., Mt. Vernon.

SHIMKUS ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS FOR MILITARY ACADEMIES Congressman John Shimkus (R, Illinois-15) is now accepting applications from young men and women interested in attending one of the United States military academies. High school seniors, college students, and anyone interested should apply now for summer 2016 admission. “As the school year begins, many students are thinking about what’s next. As a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, I am eager to provide information and assistance with nominations to the military academies,” Shimkus stated. To be eligible for appointment, you must be a United

States citizen; at least 17 and not more than 23 years of age on July 1, 2016; unmarried; not pregnant; have no dependents; and a legal resident of the 15th Congressional District of Illinois. Applications are accepted for the U.S. Air Force Academy at Colorado Springs, Colorado; U.S. Military Academy at West Point, New York; U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland; and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, New York. Students interested in applying may go to https://shimkus. house.gov/services/militarya c a d e my - n o m i n a t i o n s . Completed applications have

to be received no later than November 6, 2015, or they will not be considered. More information is available by calling the Congressman’s Maryville office at 618-288-7190. Shimkus nominates to the academies; however, academy officials actually make the final selection regarding admission. Those accepted into an academy will be notified in early 2016. “I encourage young men and women with any level of interest to contact us now,” Shimkus added. “There are several steps in this process, and applications must be filed with both my office and online with the individual academies.”

Before we know it, snow will be flying and it will be Christmas cookie baking time. I love all four seasons, but my favorite is fall. I think it's because of the cool, crisp mornings; beautiful colors as the trees turn bright orange, yellow and crimson; warm woolly sweaters; the smells of soup on the back burner and fresh homemade bread; candlelight dinners; and of course, harvest moons. Some of my favorite dishes this time of year are below, so enjoy. I call it cooking up tradition.

By Larry Cox Costume Jewelry Q: At a recent garage sale, I purchased a shoebox filled with rhinestone costume jewelry from the 1940s and '50s. Most of them look like designer pieces. Can you recommend a good price guide to help me determine current values. I only paid $5 for the collection. — Susan, Omaha, Nebraska A: It sounds like you got a good deal. In recent years, rhinestone jewelry

• On Sept. 26, 1580, English seaman Francis Drake returns to England, becoming the first British navigator to sail around the world. Drake had set out from England on Dec. 13, 1577, with five ships on a mission to raid Spanish holdings on the Pacific coast of the New World. • On Sept. 27, 1869, in Kansas, Ellis County sheriff Wild Bill Hickok responds to a bar brawl and kills one man. Weeks later he killed a second man in the name of law enforcement. While his brutal ways were effective, local citizens were less than impressed. At the next election Hickok was voted out. • On Sept. 22, 1953, the world's first four-level interchange opens in Los Angeles at the intersection of the Harbor, Hollywood, Pasadena and Santa Ana freeways — 32 lanes of traffic weaving in eight directions at once. • On Sept. 23, 1969, the trial for eight anti-war activists charged with the violent demonstrations at the 1968 Democratic National Convention opens in Chicago. Although there are several excellent price guides, I highly recommend "Rhinestone Jewelry: A Price and Identification Guide" by Leigh Leshner and published by Krause Books. Powell became the first black American to achieve the nation's highest military post. • On Sept. 24, 1996, bestselling author Stephen King releases two new novels at once. as a global businessman. Fiorina earned the biggest applause of the night as she skewered Planned Parenthood. She said, "This is about the character of our nation, and if we will not stand up and force Obama to veto this bill, shame on us." This was her biggest moment of the night, judging by the applause! Throughout the evening the questions were not great. The moderators framed their questions to encourage the candidates to criticize each other's positions on the issues rather than addressing the issues themselves. CNN's interrogative strategy might

have been okay for Twitter but not a live presidential debate. All in all, I think most of the candidates did well, in spite of CNN's liberal views. In the end, 44% of CNN's questions focused on Donald Trump. I'm not sure what that was about. Definitely, Fiorina emerged on top of the CNN GOP debate, but Trump still dominates the conversation and the lead. And over 22 million people watched — a record breaker.

bizarre charm of Biden being Biden. We are constantly assured by people around her that Hillary Clinton is "warm in private." Biden is warm in public. His performance swearing in new senators earlier this year was a nonstop Bidenesque spectacle of selfies, folksy comments and general crazy-uncle antics, some of dubious appropriateness. Their public personas are captured in the story of two parades. One of the enduring moments of the Hillary campaign so far is of reporters being corralled in a roped-off pen to keep them away from the candidate during a small July Fourth parade in New Hampshire — creating an instant metaphor of arrogance and control. When Joe Biden showed up at a Pittsburgh Labor Day parade, he broke into a trot, eagerly bouncing from one side of the route to another, shaking hands, dispensing hugs and kissing babies. Low energy, in Donald Trump's signature phrase, this was not. Biden was a joyous retail campaigner in his element.

On paper, Biden is hardly a natural match for the populist, anti-establishment mood. He first got elected to the Senate in 1972, a year after Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was born. His resume includes 17 years as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and 12 as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This is a resume for a gold watch, not for a late-developing insurgent president campaign. Yet Biden is a practiced and, unfortunately, fairly effective demagogue. He can denounce the rich with the best of them. If he gets in, he will immediately be evaluated by a different standard. He'll be an actual candidate rather than the intriguing potential new entry. He'll be the old white guy trying to "stop history." But he'll also be a breath of fresh air in a Democratic race that was supposed to be the stultifying march to the nomination by one of the dullest politicians of our time.

On to Rich Lowry's views. He is the editor of the National Review.

Biden Being Biden

Don’t Miss Out On The Many Great Values.

An Extra

Last week's GOP debate was hosted by CNN, a three hour long bickering session. I almost fell asleep halfway through. The evening was full of "gotcha" questions, in my opinion, setting up the candidates to look bad! But what else could you expect from CNN! While the sparks flew between Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump, I clearly felt Ms. Fiorina came out ahead. After three hours and eleven minutes on stage — in heels, no less — she successfully challenged Trump, criticizing his wisecracks about her personal appearance and challenging his credentials

While Hillary Clinton's team of consultants is locked in a room somewhere trying to figure out how she can project authenticity, Joe Biden is out doing it. The vice president's recent interview on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" was compellingly human, as Biden talked of the tragic loss of his son Beau and his decision whether or not to make a late entr y into the Democratic presidential race. It's rare for someone who has been at the pinnacle of our politics for decades to get a second look. But Biden's latest family tragedy (he lost his first wife and a daughter to a car accident in the 1970s) means that the vice president is viewed through a prism of sympathy, as a grieving father rather than just another politician. And Hillary's struggles, especially her woodenness, put an accent on Biden's let-it-all-hang-out, true-to-his-self personality. You can disagree with Biden, you can mock him, you can cringe at his miscues -- but it is impossible not to like him. Hillary's team can come up with the best, most elaborate plan for her latest makeover (it will emphasize spontaneity, The New York Times reports) and still not come close to matching the

BLUFORD COMMUNITY VETERANS MEMORIAL FUNDRAISER The Bluford Community Veterans Memorial honors over 500 veterans from the area who have passed away, some dating back to the Civil War. The Memorial Committee has developed a plan to add some of these names to new granite monuments. Nearly all of the

funds to build and improve this memorial have come from donations. The Committee is working very hard to raise over $8,000 to finish up the latest proposed addition. To finance this they are planning a chili supper at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the

Bluford Ruritan building. A drawing will be held at the chili supper. Winners will receive their choice of $400 cash or pick from the following guns: Henry Pump 22; Ruger SR9C 9mm; Ruger Single 6 22/ mag; or Browning 1911 22. The winner will be drawn

at the chili supper fundraiser. Winner must be 21 and have a FOlD card to receive a handgun. Tickets cost $10 and are available at the village hall. The Bluford Veterans Memorial is pictured at right.

THIS FALL, EASE INTO RETIREMENT, ONLINE BY MS. LOWDER, SOCIAL SECURITY DISTRICT MANAGER IN MT. VERNON, IL

September 23 marks the first day of fall. During this season, many people reflect on the gradual passing of time as green leaves turn gold and pine needles blanket lawns. You are also slowly changing, and those golden years of retirement are one season closer. We want you to be as prepared as possible, and making applying for retirement easy is one of Social Security’s top priorities. In fact, applying for retirement benefits has never been easier. You can do it all online. Unlike the leaves that take many weeks to change, you can complete Social Security’s online retirement application in as little as 15 minutes. Better yet, you can apply from the comfort of your home or office. There's no need to drive to a local Social Security office or wait for an appointment with a Social Security representative. Simply go to www.socialsecurity.gov/ retire/apply.html.

Most of the time, after your online application is submitted, you're done. There are no forms to sign, and we usually require no additional documentation. Social Security will process your application and contact you if we need further information. Planning for retirement is much like preparing for colder weather — you want to protect yourself and your loved ones as best you can with the best resources possible. One important, but easy way to do this is to check your Social Security Statement using your secure online my Social Security account. Set up your account easily by answering a few questions to prove your identity. After you have an account, you can check your Statement anytime, day or night. Your Social Security Statement shows your lifetime earnings so you can make sure those records are correct. This way, you’ll know your

retirement benefit will be accurate. In addition, there are some useful things you can do with your personal my Social Security account, such as: • Get an estimate of your future benefits if you’re still working; • Print a letter with proof of your benefits if you currently receive them; and • Manage your benefits: – Change your address; – Start or change your direct deposit; – Get a replacement Medicare card; and – Get a replacement SSA-1099 or SSA1042S for tax season. Beginning the season of retirement can be exciting and scary at the same time. At Social Security, we make it easier by providing the tools and information you can use to help you make the best decision for you and then apply for benefits online. And, when you’re done, you’ll have more

EAGLE LIFE

Rooted and Grounded in Love As I went into a convenience store, I noticed the young sales clerk sported a rock band t-shirt that read, “Root of All Evil.” I asked him if he knew what the root of all evil was and he replied, “Money.” “Partly correct,” I replied. “The scriptures actually say, ‘The love of money is the root of all evil.’” (I Timothy 6:10) That encounter started me thinking about roots. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines root as, “The leafless, underground part of a seed plant that functions in absorption, aeration, and storage or as a means of anchorage. The essential core, source, origin; verb usage: become established, set, implant, entrench.” To be rooted is essential to life. Consider and apply some of the scriptural concepts of roots that will establish and cause your life to flourish. THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL. The scriptures reveal this insidious root. “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many

sorrows.” (I Timothy 6:10) God knows we need money while on this earth. But the love of money corrupts and can never satisfy the soul. It seeks to usurp the place of God. Only Christ the Bread of Life can satisfy your soul. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil and leads many to “pierce themselves through with many sorrows.” THE ROOT OF BITTERNESS DEFILES MANY. “Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble and by this many b e c o m e d e f i l e d .” (Hebrews 12:15) Cain became so bitter at his brother Abel that he killed him. The root of bitterness will entangle your heart, choke out the love of Christ in your life, defile relationships, and destroy your soul. THE ROOT OF THE BELIEVER GROUNDED DEEP IN GOD’S WORD. Jesus told the parable of the soils in

Matthew 13:6. A sower sowed some seed. Some fell on the pathway and failed to take root. Some fell on rocky soil and the plants had shallow roots and withered under the scorching sun. The seed sown among weeds was choked out. But seed sown on good soil produced abundantly. Be rooted deep in God’s Word. THE ROOT OF SIN MUST BE CUT OFF. John the Baptist preached a message of repentance. “And even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees.” (Matthew 3:8-10) Last year I tried to pull a stump out of the ground, but I had to dig around it and cut the tap root before I could pull it out. Repentance severs the root of sin and bondage. Paulo Coelho said, “When something undesirable grows in my soul I ask God to give me the same courage mercilessly to pluck it out.” THE ROOT AND OFFSPRING OF JESSE, JESUS CHRIST, GIVES POWER TO OVERCOME. He gives glorious shade from the scorching sun and rest for the troubled soul. (Isaiah 11:10; 53:2) He is the hope of the Gentiles who were separated from God. (Romans 15:12; Revelation 5:5) Jesus

Christ referred to himself as “the root and the offspring of David.” (Revelation 22:16) It’s a designation of the Messiah. Be rooted in Him. THE ROOT OF THE WILD OLIVE TREE WAS GRAFTED INTO THE OLIVE TREE. Throughout my life, I have lived in at least 12 locations. Sometimes I’ve felt that I had no roots until I realized that, by faith in Christ, I have been born again and grafted into the root of David — Jesus Christ. (Romans 11:16, 18; Colossians 2:7; Proverbs 12:3, 12) Rooted in Christ, there is stability and life everlasting. THE ROOT OF THE BELIEVER GROUNDED IN GOD’S LOVE ABOUNDS IN THE FULLNESS OF GOD. “That Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love may be able to comprehend . . . the love of Christ . . . filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19) A contemporary song says it this way, “Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was noted author and Nobel laureate Ernest Hemingway who made the following sage observation: “Never think that war, no matter how justified, is not a crime. Ask the infantry and ask the dead.” He would know; he volunteered as an ambulance driver on the Italian front during World War I. • Poets, take note: The words “orange,” “month,” “purple” and “silver” have

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Personal matters claim a good deal of the Lamb’s time in the early part of the week. But by midweek, pragmatic considerations (work, school, job-seeking, etc.) begin to take priority. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The seasonal shift ignites the Bovine’s creative aspects. You could do well if you try to combine your penchant for innovation with the more pragmatic demands of the week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Ideas come easily to you this week. And never mind that some might suggest they’re unworkable and/or impractical. It’s your vision that counts. Work them out and see what turns up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters continue to dominate the early part of the week. By midweek, more workaday issues once again begin to emerge. Balance your time to give both the attention they need. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new contact could provide an expanded opportunity. But be sure you get all the facts before you consider signing on. Ask questions, and be wary if you don’t get the right answers. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected development could cause some supposedly resolved disagreements to reignite. Deal with the situation before it leads to some really serious problems. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A clash of work-linked viewpoints needs to be discussed openly, honestly

and calmly by all concerned before it can impede progress on an ongoing project. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The Scorpion’s pragmatic side helps you accept the possibility that a change of plans might be the wise thing to do. Be sure to weigh all your considerations carefully. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some people might not take no for an answer. Never mind. Keep your resolve if you’re sure you don’t want to be involved in a potentially sticky situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) All other facts and figures aside, it’s what you learn about potential colleagues that can be most helpful in assessing any decisions you’re likely to make regarding a new project. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might want to reconsider some of your outside commitments if they continue to demand more time than you can spare. Be honest with yourself when making a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Pay attention to that inner voice of Piscean wisdom counseling you to remove those rose-colored glasses and take an honest look at any decisions you might face this week. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a penchant for persuasion that would make you a fine candidate for a political career. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
