There is — or was, if you listen to the stylings of Donald Trump — such a thing as "American exceptionalism." I don't really know the textbook definition of that phrase, or its etymology, but I'm pretty sure that American exceptionalism makes it OK if I don't look it up and just go from the gut on this one. Here's a story: There was a great restaurant in Kansas City, long since gone because maybe it wasn't all that great, but one day the

Engel Bros., Inc. (618)245-6551 • 1-800-726-0446 Off I-57; Turn East on Rt. 185 - 1/2 Mile Across from South Central High School, Farina

restaurant was pretty packed. In the door walks a notorious Kansas City football team executive and his exceptional new wife. He wants a table. His reservation, he is informed, isn't for another 20 minutes. He flicks his left arm out as if he's pulling a switchblade, but it is not. It is an exceptional timepiece ... it's Swiss, not American, but exceptional nonetheless. "Yeah, well according to my $20,000 watch," he says to the hostess, "it's right now." The hostess blinks, so I cannot say that she did not bat an eyelash because she did. And she had long, black eyelashes. I'm guessing they were fake, but her resp ons e was pretty genuine classic. "Well ... I don't have a watch on, and I can tell you that it's always RIGHT NOW. And your table will

be ready in 20 minutes. You're welcome to wait at the bar." He narrows his eyes and growls like a cartoon villain, but he deserved that and so he retreats to the well-appointed bar. The football executive orders a Chardonnay. His wife looks at the cocktail board and inquires about a few of the drinks and their ingredients. "What is triple sec?" she asks the bartender. His name is Sean. He is the best in the business. Truly exceptional. "It's three times the amount of normal sec," he responds. The executive narrows his eyes again and purses his lips. The wife is bemused, waiting for the real answer I would think, but Sean doubles down. "Single sec is very weak. We won't carry it here." She gets the Cosmopolitan, and they both begin talking to other married couples, keeping Swiss time. Another bartender, Ally, is making a bright-red drink and conjuring up a name from Chiefs lore. "What's that?" asks the football executive.

"It's the Len Dawson Cocktail," replies Ally. "It's one of our signature drinks." "The Len Dawson!" the football executive narrows his eyes again. If he keeps that up, they're gonna stay that way permanently. "Yep," she says, dipping a straw into the pint glass, extracting a sample and offering it up to the football executive, who leans over in a tentative manner. "It tastes just like Len Dawson," she promises. The bar has exceptional marble floors. They're Italian. It's funny how you don't notice them when you walk in, because you're looking up, but when a football executive pushes backward on his barstool really fast, you can actually hear the difference in the quality of flooring. They don't even scratch. Timing is everything. Waiting for him at the end of the screech is the hostess, two menus in hand. No doubt, an exceptional time was had by all.

The Happy Hearts Quilt Guild will hold their "Turning Twenty" Quilt Show from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10 at the Salem Community Center, located at 416 E. Oglesby in Salem, IL. Cost is $3 for adults, under 12 free. The Happy Hearts Quilt Guild began twenty years ago this year. A group of women who had a passion for quilting established a group that would meet once a month to share,

support, and encourage the appreciation, development, and process of quilting. Twenty years and still continuing, this group meets once a month to share in the love of quilts and quilt-making. The group consists of individuals of all skill levels: those who just admire quilts, beginners, experts, and those in between. A standing tradition is to host a quilt show each year. The show not only

One Stop For Fall Decorating Mums • Pansies • Ornamental Kale • Pumpkins • Gourds • Straw Bales • Corn Stalks

Cooking With Lizzie

Before we know it, snow will be flying and it will be Christmas cookie baking time. I love all four seasons, but my favorite is fall. I think it's because of the cool, crisp mornings; beautiful colors as the trees turn bright orange, yellow and crimson; warm woolly sweaters; the smells of soup on the back burner and fresh homemade bread; candlelight dinners; and of course, harvest moons. Some of my favorite dishes this time of year are below, so enjoy. I call it cooking up tradition.

Apple Orchard Salad 2 large green apples, cored, unpeeled, and diced 1 large red apple, cored, unpeeled, and diced 3 tablespoons lemon juice 1/2 cup chopped celery

1/2 cup raisins 1/2 cup chopped pecans, toasted 1/4 cup mayonnaise 1 tsp. sugar Lettuce leaves

Sprinkle apples with lemon juice and toss gently to coat; drain. Combine apples, celery, raisins, and pecans, tossing gently. Combine mayonnaise and sugar, stirring well. Add mayonnaise mixture to apple mixture and stir gently. Serve over lettuce leaves. Yield: 6 servings.

Traditional Turnip Greens 5 lbs. young and tender fresh turnip greens with roots (1 large bunch) 1/2 lbs. salt pork, cut into 4 pieces 2 cups water

1 dried red pepper pod 1/2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. sugar Hot pepper sauce (optional)

Wash turnip greens thoroughly; drain and wash again. Drain well. Tear greens into bitesize pieces. Peel turnip roots and coarsely chop. Rinse salt pork. Combine salt pork, water, pepper pod, and salt in large Dutch oven over high heat; bring to boil. Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 30 minutes. Remove and discard pepper pod. Stir in turnip greens; cover and cook 20 minutes. Add turnip roots and sugar; cover and cook 15 to 20 minutes, or until greens and roots reach desired degree of doneness. Remove and discard salt pork. Serve turnips with hot pepper sauce, if desired. Yield: 6 to 8 servings.

Project Pride is a seasonal neighborhood recognition program sponsored by Keep Centralia Beautiful. The recognition is presented to homes and businesses that have made a notable contribution to their neighborhood through beautification and upkeep of their property. The City of Centralia has been divided into eight sections. One home in each section, along with one local business, will be presented with this honor during the months of May through December. This award is to those contributing to the beautification of their neighborhood. This year’s committee will make their tours around the city to choose the homes and one business each month. The homes chosen will be provided a sign for their yard for that month, a certificate and recognition in the Shoppers Weekly. Thank you in advance for making a dedicated commitment to this program and your neighborhood. More people are taking pride in their yards and neighborhoods by putting time and effort into making their property a true asset to the com-

munity. After their hard work, they can enjoy the fruits of their toil and perhaps be recognized for helping make Centralia

beautiful one neighborhood at a time. Centralia Clean and Green recently chose the properties pictured below as

Those accepted into an academy will be notified in early 2016. “I encourage young men and women with any level of interest to contact us now,” Shimkus added. “There are several steps in this process, and applications must be filed with both my office and online with the individual academies.”

To be conscious that you are ignorant is a great step to knowledge. –Disraeli

Last week's GOP debate was hosted by CNN, a three hour long bickering session. I almost fell asleep halfway through. The evening was full of "gotcha" questions, in my opinion, setting up the candidates to look bad! But what else could you expect from CNN! While the sparks flew between Carly Fiorina and Donald Trump, I clearly felt Ms. Fiorina came out ahead. After three hours and eleven minutes on stage — in heels, no less — she successfully challenged Trump, criticizing his wisecracks about her personal appearance and challenging his credentials

have been okay for Twitter but not a live presidential debate. All in all, I think most of the candidates did well, in spite of CNN's liberal views. In the end, 44% of CNN's questions focused on Donald Trump. I'm not sure what that was about. Definitely, Fiorina emerged on top of the CNN GOP debate, but Trump still dominates the conversation and the lead. And over 22 million people watched — a record breaker.

bizarre charm of Biden being Biden. We are constantly assured by people around her that Hillary Clinton is "warm in private." Biden is warm in public. His performance swearing in new senators earlier this year was a nonstop Bidenesque spectacle of selfies, folksy comments and general crazy-uncle antics, some of dubious appropriateness. Their public personas are captured in the story of two parades. One of the enduring moments of the Hillary campaign so far is of reporters being corralled in a roped-off pen to keep them away from the candidate during a small July Fourth parade in New Hampshire — creating an instant metaphor of arrogance and control. When Joe Biden showed up at a Pittsburgh Labor Day parade, he broke into a trot, eagerly bouncing from one side of the route to another, shaking hands, dispensing hugs and kissing babies. Low energy, in Donald Trump's signature phrase, this was not. Biden was a joyous retail campaigner in his element.

On paper, Biden is hardly a natural match for the populist, anti-establishment mood. He first got elected to the Senate in 1972, a year after Florida Sen. Marco Rubio was born. His resume includes 17 years as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and 12 as chairman or ranking member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. This is a resume for a gold watch, not for a late-developing insurgent president campaign. Yet Biden is a practiced and, unfortunately, fairly effective demagogue. He can denounce the rich with the best of them. If he gets in, he will immediately be evaluated by a different standard. He'll be an actual candidate rather than the intriguing potential new entry. He'll be the old white guy trying to "stop history." But he'll also be a breath of fresh air in a Democratic race that was supposed to be the stultifying march to the nomination by one of the dullest politicians of our time.

On to Rich Lowry's views. He is the editor of the National Review.

While Hillary Clinton's team of consultants is locked in a room somewhere trying to figure out how she can project authenticity, Joe Biden is out doing it. The vice president's recent interview on "The Late Show With Stephen Colbert" was compellingly human, as Biden talked of the tragic loss of his son Beau and his decision whether or not to make a late entr y into the Democratic presidential race. It's rare for someone who has been at the pinnacle of our politics for decades to get a second look. But Biden's latest family tragedy (he lost his first wife and a daughter to a car accident in the 1970s) means that the vice president is viewed through a prism of sympathy, as a grieving father rather than just another politician. And Hillary's struggles, especially her woodenness, put an accent on Biden's let-it-all-hang-out, true-to-his-self personality. You can disagree with Biden, you can mock him, you can cringe at his miscues -- but it is impossible not to like him. Hillary's team can come up with the best, most elaborate plan for her latest makeover (it will emphasize spontaneity, The New York Times reports) and still not come close to matching the

DONATE BLOOD, SUPPORT ORGAN TRANSPLANT PATIENTS AND OTHERS During Liver Awareness Month this October, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give blood and platelets to support liver transplant patients and others needing blood products. Liver transplants are the second most common type of transplant with more than 6,000 performed in the U.S. each year, according to the American Liver Foundation. Liver transplant patients may require in excess of 30 pints of blood during surgery. For blood donor Amy Slattery, the need for blood hits close to home. Her mother received a liver transplant and needed more than 70 blood products during the surgery. “I donate to help others that needed blood like her,” said Slattery. “I donate in thanks to those who donate their blood products to help save lives.” Volunteer donors like Slattery are the only source of blood for those in need of transfusions during transplants and other surgeries. Donors with all blood types are needed, and especially those with types O negative, A negative, B negative and AB blood. To make an appointment to donate blood, eligible donors are encouraged to download the new Red Cross Blood Donor App from app stores or text BLOODAPP to 90999 to receive a download link, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). Upcoming blood donation opportunities are listed

below. Clinton County: Oct. 6, 2 p.m. - 7 p.m., St. John's United Church of Christ, 21 N. Walnut, Trenton. Oct. 9, 2:45 p.m. - 7 p.m., Breese District No. 12, 777 Memorial Drive, Breese. Oct.. 12, 3 p.m. - 7 p.m., Hoffman Village Hall, 110 East Park Ave., Hoffman. To donate blood simply download the American Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to make an appointment or for more information. All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age (16 with parental consent in some states), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. Blood donors in the Missouri-Illinois Blood Services Region can now save time at their next donation by using RapidPass to complete their pre-donation reading and health history questionnaire online, on the day of their donation, prior to arriving at the blood drive. SUICIDE PREVENTION MONTH The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) collects data about mortality in the U.S., including deaths by suicide. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s latest data on suicide is taken from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Data & Statistics Fatal Injury Report for 2013. Suicide Deaths In 2013 (the most recent year for which full data are available), 41,149 suicides were reported, making suicide the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. In that year, someone in the country died by suicide every 12.8 minutes. After cancer and heart disease, suicide accounts for more years of life lost than any other cause of death. From 1986 to 2000, suicide rates in the U.S. dropped from 12.5 to 10.4 suicide deaths per 100,000 people in the population. Over the next 12 years, however, the rate generally increased and by 2013 stood at 12.6 deaths per 100,000.

Who is Most at Risk for Death by Suicide? Suicide death rates vary considerably among different groups of people. The CDC reports suicide rates by four key demographic variables: age, sex, race/ethnicity, and geographic region/state. Suicide Rates by Age In 2013, the highest suicide rate (19.1) was among people 45 to 64 years old. The second highest rate (18.6) occurred in those 85 years and older. Younger groups have had consistently lower suicide rates than middle-aged and older adults. In 2013, adolescents and young adults aged 15 to 24 had a suicide rate of 10.9. Suicide Rates by Sex For many years, the suicide rate has been about 4 times higher among men than among women. In 2013, men had a suicide rate of 20.2, and women had a rate of 5.5. Of those who died by suicide in 2013, 77.9% were male and 22.1% were female. Suicide Attempts We know that many suicide attempts go unreported or untreated, and surveys suggest that at least one million people in the U.S. each year engage in intentionally inflicted selfharm.

Suicide Warning Signs People who kill themselves exhibit one or more warning signs, either through what they say or what they do. The more warning signs, the greater the risk. Talk If a person talks about: • Killing themselves. • Having no reason to live. • Being a burden to others. • Feeling trapped. • Unbearable pain. Behavior A person’s suicide risk is greater if a behavior is new or has increased, especially if it’s related to a painful event, loss, or change. • Increased use of alcohol or drugs. • Looking for a way to kill themselves, such as searching online for materials or means. • Acting recklessly. • Withdrawing from activities. • Isolating from family and friends. • Sleeping too much or too little. • Visiting or calling people to say goodbye. • Giving away prized possessions. • Aggression

Mood People who are considering suicide often display one or more of the following moods. • Depression. • Loss of interest. • Rage. • Irritability. • Humiliation. • Anxiety. Suicide Risk Factors Risk factors are characteristics or conditions that increase the chance that a person may try to take their life. The more risk factors, the higher the risk. Health Factors • Mental health conditions. • Depression. • Bipolar (manicdepressive) disorder. • Schizophrenia. • Borderline or antisocial personality disorder. • Conduct disorder. • Psychotic disorders, or psychotic symptoms in the context of any disorder • Anxiety disorders. • Substance abuse disorders. • Serious or chronic health condition and/or pain.

Environmental Factors Contagion would include exposure to another person’s suicide, or to graphic or sensationalized accounts of suicide. Access to Lethal Means including firearms and drugs. Prolonged Stress Factors which may include harassment, bullying, relationship problems, and unemployment. Stressful Life Events which may include a death, divorce, or job loss. Historical Factors • Family History of Suicide. • Family History of Mental Health Conditions. • Previous Suicide Attempts. • Childhood Abuse. Key Research Findings: Mental Disorders Studies show that the most common disorders among people who die by suicide are major depression and other mood disorders, and substance use disorders, schizophrenia and personality disorders. Such studies have consistently found that the overwhelming majority of

people who die by suicide— 90% or more — had a mental disorder at the time of their deaths. Often, however, these disorders had not been recognized, diagnosed, or adequately treated. Psychological autopsy studies have also shown that about one-third of people who took their lives did not communicate their suicide intent to anyone. One of the most important conclusions from this research is the importance of teaching laypeople to recognize the symptoms of mental disorders in those they are close to, so that they can support them to get help. Among people who die by suicide, depression is more common than any other other disorder. Therefore, efforts to educate primary care providers about the diagnosis and treatment of depression are especially important. Research has shown that certain symptoms in the context of depression raise the risk of suicide. These include intense anxiety, panic attacks, desperation, hopelessness, feeling that one is a burden, loss of interest and pleasure, and delusional thinking. (Continued on next page)

Suicide Prevention (Continued from previous page)

Previous Suicide Attempt Data collected by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show clear differences in the gender and age patterns of suicide attempters and those who die by suicide. Young women, for example, are estimated to make 100 or more suicide attempts for every completed suicide, but yet they have a low rate of completed suicide. In contrast, the elderly have a suicide rate that is twice the rate among youth, but make relatively few non-fatal suicide attempts. Greater overall frailty and increased likelihood of physical illnesses contributes to the lethality of suicide attempts in older adults. Family History of Suicide Although studies show that depression and other psychopathology also runs in families, the heritability of suicide appears to exist even independent from inherited depression. Exposure to completed and attempted suicide in the family has also been

11

The Shoppers Weekly Papers Centralia / Salem Area

found to increase suicide risk among family members by providing a “social model” of self-harm behavior. As with other geneticallylinked illnesses and conditions, awareness of possible risk and attention to early signs of problems in oneself or a loved one can be protective if it leads those who have lost a relative to suicide to seek timely treatment or intervention. Medical Conditions and Pain Patients with serious medical conditions such as cancer, HIV, lupus, and traumatic brain injury may be at increased risk for suicide. This is primarily due to psychological states such as hopelessness, helplessness, and desire for control over death. Chronic pain, insomnia and adverse effects of medications have also been cited as contributing factors. These findings point to a critical need for increased screening for mental disorders and suicidal ideation and behavior in general medical settings.

Suicide Contagion That imitative behavior (“contagion”) plays a role in suicide has long been observed. Recent studies have concluded that media coverage of suicide is connected to the increase—or decrease— in subsequent suicides, particularly among adolescents. High volume, prominent, repetitive coverage that glorifies, sensationalizes or romanticizes suicide has been found to be associated with an increase in suicides. There is also evidence that when coverage includes a detailed description of specific means used, the use of that method may increase in the population as a whole. In recent years, the internet has become a particular concern because of its reach and potential to communicate information about notorious suicides and those that occur among celebrities. However, when media follows appropriate reporting recommendations, studies show that the risk of suicide contagion can be decreased.

Access to Lethal Methods of Suicide In the U.S., the most common method of suicide is firearms, used in 51% of all suicides. Currently, firearms are involved in 56% of male suicides and 30% of female suicides. Among U.S. women, the most common suicide method involves poisonous substances, especially overdoses of medications. Poisoning accounts for 37% of female suicides, compared to only 12% of male suicides. Hanging or other means of suffocation are used in about 25% of both male and female suicides. The greater availability of firearms in rural parts of the country also contributes to higher suicide rates in the more rural Western states. Studies have shown that many suicide attempts are unplanned and occur during an acute period of ambivalence. Therefore, restricting access to lethal methods is a key suicide prevention strategy. Biological Factors Suicide is a result of a disease of the brain. The brain systems that have been most frequently studied as factors

in suicide are the serotonergic system, adrenergic system and the Hypothalamic-Pituitary Axis (HPA), which relate to mood, thinking and stress response, respectively. This research has also identified neurobiological impairments related to depression and other underlying mental disorders, as well as to acute or prolonged stressors.

$5 for the collection. — Susan, Omaha, Nebraska A: It sounds like you got a good deal. In recent years, rhinestone jewelry has become extremely popular with collectors, and that has caused prices to soar. Although there are several excellent price guides, I highly recommend "Rhinestone Jewelry: A Price and Identification Guide" by Leigh Leshner and published by Krause Books. It features more than 500 illustrations in full color, and details the beauty, history and current market value of all types of rhinestone jewelry. There also is information on how to care for costume pieces. *** Q: I have a Japanese tea set that has more than 50 pieces. It is pre-occupation. What is it worth? — Joyce, Victoria, Texas A: Your question is much like someone asking me what a car is worth. If the car is a 1935 Packard, it is probably worth major bucks. On the other hand, if it is a Yugo, it's likely not worth much. Identification marks on porcelain identify both the maker and sometimes the period it was crafted. This is its pedigree, and without this basic information it is impossible to determine much about your set. ***

125TH ANNIVERSARY OF LOCAL LEGEND'S DEATH BY ANN CHAPPELL

Shopper's Weekly Staff Photo

Statue of Annie Marshall Editor's note: Who of us that live in Centralia and are in the least bit interested in history doesn't know about the little girl with the violin in Elmwood Cemetery. It's been reported that late at night you can hear the sweet melody of Annie's violin. Personally, I've never been brave

enough to verify this haunting rumor. But possibly the time is right, because Sept. 30, 2015 is the 125th anniversary of Annie's death at age 11. Annie was born Sept. 7, 1879 and died Sept. 30, 1890. Below is an article by Ann Chappell, who just might have been named after Annie.

Eliza Jane Stump, my great grandmother, lost her parents in the "big flood" where the two rivers met when she was around three years old. As she had no family, she moved from one family to another. At the age of ten, while chopping wood, she cut off part of her foot. The lady she was staying with sewed it back on with black thread. I remember my mother telling me she would rub her grandmother's foot, and that the black thread was still there when she died on Oct. 24, 1918. Dr. Edward Marshall made a call where Eliza was living when she was 13 years old and found her with no shoes or socks, and it was winter and very cold. He took off his shoes and socks and put his socks on her feet. He then put her in his buggy and took her with him, and she would stay with the families that Dr. Marshall visited who needed help. Dr. Marshall moved to Centralia around 1858. Eliza met and married Joseph Taylor on April 8, 1856 in Randolph County and they followed Dr. Marshall to Centralia. When my grandmother was born she was crosseyed, and Dr. Marshall operated on her, saying no little girl should go through life crosseyed. My grandmother's name was Anna Elizabeth. When I was born she asked if she could name me, so I became Ann and she always called me "Little Orphan Annie." I was told my great grandmother Eliza put flowers on "Annie's" grave, and as far back as I can remember my grandmother and my mother took flowers out of the yard and put them on the grave. After my grandmother died, my mother put flowers on the grave. When

plastic flowers came out, my mother was really happy because they lasted all summer. Before she died, silk flowers came out and she loved them because they looked real. One of the last things my mother asked me was if I had put flowers on Annie's grave for Memorial Day. My mother died in June 1987, and I have put flowers on Annie's grave ever since. In July of 1996, my husband Jerry started working on the "Little Chapel" in Elmwood Cemetery. As we passed Annie's grave every day, I decided she needed help because the bow on her violin was broken off as was one of her fingers. Not knowing that I needed permission from the family, I hired Bill Thackrey to repair her. When he finished, she was back to her old beautiful self. The paper did an article and picture of Annie, and I heard from the family. They sent a donation for the "Little Chapel." I have kept in touch with them. Sept. 30, 2015 will be the 125th anniversary of Annie's death.

EAGLE LIFE

Ministries by: Cliff Sanders

Rooted and Grounded in Love As I went into a convenience store, I noticed the young sales clerk sported a rock band t-shirt that read, “Root of All Evil.” I asked him if he knew what the root of all evil was and he replied, “Money.” “Partly correct,” I replied. “The scriptures actually say, ‘The love of money is the root of all evil.’” (I Timothy 6:10) That encounter started me thinking about roots. The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines root as, “The leafless, underground part of a seed plant that functions in absorption, aeration, and storage or as a means of anchorage. The essential core, source, origin; verb usage: become established, set, implant, entrench.” To be rooted is essential to life. Consider and apply some of the scriptural concepts of roots that will establish and cause your life to flourish. THE ROOT OF ALL

EVIL. The scriptures reveal this insidious root. “For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.” (I Timothy 6:10) God knows we need money while on this earth. But the love of money corrupts and can never satisfy the soul. It seeks to usurp the place of God. Only Christ the Bread of Life can satisfy your soul. The love of money is a root of all kinds of evil and leads many to “pierce themselves t h rou g h w it h m any sorrows.” THE ROOT OF BITTERNESS DEFILES MANY. “Looking carefully lest anyone fall short of the grace of God; lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble and by this many become defiled.” (Hebrews 12:15) Cain became so bitter at his brother Abel that he killed him. The root of bitterness will entangle your heart, choke out the love of Christ

in your life, defile relationships, and destroy your soul. THE ROOT OF THE BELIEVER GROUNDED DEEP IN GOD’S WORD. Jesus told the parable of the soils in Matthew 13:6. A sower sowed some seed. Some fell on the pathway and failed to take root. Some fell on rocky soil and the plants had shallow roots and withered under the scorching sun. The seed sown among weeds was choked out. But seed sown on good soil produced abundantly. Be rooted deep in God’s Word. THE ROOT OF SIN MUST BE CUT OFF. John the Baptist preached a message of repentance. “And even now the ax is laid at the root of the trees.” (Matthew 3:8-10) Last year I tried to pull a stump out of the ground, but I had to dig around it and cut the tap root before I could pull it out. Repentance severs the root of sin and bondage. Paulo Coelho said, “When something undesirable grows in my soul I ask God to give me the same courage mercilessly to pluck it out.” THE ROOT AND OFFSPRING OF JESSE, JESUS CHRIST, GIVES POWER TO OVERCOME. He gives glorious shade from the scorching sun and rest for the troubled soul. (Isaiah 11:10; 53:2) He is the hope

of the Gentiles who were separated from God. (Romans 15:12; Revelation 5:5) Jesus Christ referred to himself as “the root and the offspring of David.” (Revelation 22:16) It’s a designation of the Messiah. Be rooted in Him. THE ROOT OF THE WILD OLIVE TREE WAS GRAFTED INTO THE OLIVE TREE. Throughout my life, I have lived in at least 12 locations. Sometimes I’ve felt that I had no roots until I realized that, by faith in Christ, I have been born again and grafted into the root of David — Jesus Christ. (Romans 11:16, 18; Colossians 2:7; Proverbs 12:3, 12) Rooted in Christ, there is stability and life everlasting. THE ROOT OF THE BELIEVER GROUNDED IN GOD’S LOVE ABOUNDS IN THE FULLNESS OF GOD. “That Christ may dwell in our hearts through faith, that you, being rooted and grounded in love may be able to comprehend . . . the love of Christ . . . filled with all the fullness of God” (Ephesians 3:17-19) A contemporary song says it this way, “Your love never fails, never gives up, never runs out on me.” Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

Cooking for Pets DEAR PAW’S CORNER: You’ve written often about cooking fresh, healthy (and safe) meals for pets, referencing cookbooks as guides for your readers to use. Those are great but now that so many of us are online, don’t forget that a lot of good videos are available for free that show how to cook for pets! — Jerry C. in Lafayette, La. DEAR JERRY: You’re absolutely right — there are numerous online resources for pet owners looking for great recipes for their dogs and cats. Cooking fresh food for pets does take extra time, and owners must be careful with the ingredients they

use, from spices to additions like onions (which are poisonous to dogs). But giving your pet a fresh meal once or twice a week is a great addition to its diet. Some might even consider feeding their pet an exclusively home-cooked diet, but doing so does require a transition period to get used to cooking for one’s pet regularly and adjusting recipes for sensitive stomachs if needed. There are a lot of videos online showing ways for pet owners to cook for their pets, but finding them can be a bit of a chore. YouTube is home to a lot of these videos: For example, Google the Doggy Cooking Network, Salmon Pup Cakes for a demo of the YouTube-based series that features recipes for dogs. Or try Linda’s Pantry, another YouTube series, which outlines how to make a week’s worth of homemade dog food.

As always when cooking fresh for your pets, review guidelines on what ingredients aren’t safe for them.

And monitor your pet whenever you introduce any new food or treat. ©2015 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Personal matters claim a good deal of the Lamb’s time in the early part of the week. But by midweek, pragmatic considerations (work, school, job-seeking, etc.) begin to take priority. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) The seasonal shift ignites the Bovine’s creative aspects. You could do well if you try to combine your penchant for innovation with the more pragmatic demands of the week. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Ideas come easily to you this week. And never mind that some might suggest they’re unworkable and/or impractical. It’s your vision that counts. Work them out and see what turns up. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) Personal matters continue to dominate the early part of the week. By midweek, more workaday issues once again begin to emerge. Balance your time to give both the attention they need. LEO (July 23 to August 22) A new contact could provide an expanded opportunity. But be sure you get all the facts before you consider signing on. Ask questions, and be wary if you don’t get the right answers. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) An unexpected development could cause some supposedly resolved disagreements to reignite. Deal with the situation before it leads to some really serious problems. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) A clash of work-linked viewpoints needs to be discussed openly, honestly

and calmly by all concerned before it can impede progress on an ongoing project. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) The Scorpion’s pragmatic side helps you accept the possibility that a change of plans might be the wise thing to do. Be sure to weigh all your considerations carefully. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Some people might not take no for an answer. Never mind. Keep your resolve if you’re sure you don’t want to be involved in a potentially sticky situation. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) All other facts and figures aside, it’s what you learn about potential colleagues that can be most helpful in assessing any decisions you’re likely to make regarding a new project. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) You might want to reconsider some of your outside commitments if they continue to demand more time than you can spare. Be honest with yourself when making a decision. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Pay attention to that inner voice of Piscean wisdom counseling you to remove those rose-colored glasses and take an honest look at any decisions you might face this week. BORN THIS WEEK: You have a penchant for persuasion that would make you a fine candidate for a political career. © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc.
