JEFFERSON COUNTY CHAMBER 2015 SENIOR SAINTS (PART 2) Over a decade ago, a small group of citizens established a program to recognize those who have devoted their lives to the betterment of the community. Since then, over 100 heroes have been named to the Jefferson County Senior Saints Hall of Fame. While countless numbers benefited from their dedication and efforts, few knew those directly responsible for the programs and benefits they enjoyed. The Senior Saints program recognizes these individuals who have shied from the public spotlight choosing to serve quietly and unnoticed. The Jefferson County Chamber of Commerce, along with the City of Mt. Vernon, and the Jefferson County Board are pleased to welcome the following heroes into the Senior Saints Hall of Fame: Helen Beckley, Carla Monroe Boyd, Carol Ritchey, Marietta Lamberson, Janice Hamerski, Ed Rourke, J.D. McKinney, Ruth Sheets, Christie Massey, Jerry McCracken, Richard Ke n n e dy, L oi s Je an Kennedy. Last week we featured the first eight nominees. This week we are featuring the last four nominees. Christie Masse y Christie has made a difference in the lives of her community. She volunteers weekly at Lifeboat Alliance as a food preparer. She is known for staying well after shift is over to talk to the residents. She helps them with other things they may need, whether it be a ride to a doctor's appointment or furniture for those that are moving out. She is a CASA advocate and is heavily into their mission. She was instrumental in forming the local Young Marines and served on the
fund raising committee for the monument for Veterans' Memorial Park, Iraqi Freedom Jefferson County Soldiers, and the City Park Building painting project. One nominator had this to say about her, "She, unlike many, has decided to make a difference in this community by getting up every day and attempting to be involved in messy situations and the chaos of this world." Jerry McCracken – Every one of Jerry's nominators described him as a "doer." His work ethic is like no other and started with his first job as a paper boy. He carried his ambition into adult life and earned the Goodyear District Spirit Award in 1978. Jerry has been heavily involved in the community. He has volunteered numerous hours on the Lions Club and Moose Club. He is a Past Chairman of the Sweet Corn and Watermelon Festival, Past President of the Jefferson C ounty Chamb er of Commerce, member of the Lincoln Park Committee, and the Christmas for the Needy. One nominator made this comment about Jerry "This man is a doer. He gets things done. He sees a need, and he is the first to say, "Let's do something about this. If everyone worked as hard as Jerry and cared as much as Jerry, this world would be a much different place." Richard Kennedy – Richard has been a member of the Kiwanis Club since 2009 and was elected as President this year. Through the Kiwanis, he has volunteered his time in the annual Special Olympics, and helped to prepare food at the City Parks Arbor Day celebration. He provides food and financially supports Angels Cove. Richard

served his country in World War II. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor. As a 17 year old, he was flying combat missions in the Solomon Islands Campaign at the battle of Guadalcanal. The aircraft carrier from which he was flying was sunk at Guadalcanal. Three times he was shot down or crashed and survived until he was rescued. He was selected to attend the honor flight to Washington D.C. Richard is a volunteer at Crossroads Community Hospital and was recently elected as President of the Auxiliary. One nominator says, "At 90 years of age, despite all that he has endured, he stands tall in his community." Lois Jean Kennedy – Jean is an active member of the Kiwanis Club. She helps to plan and organize t he annu a l Panc a ke Breakfast and the Lemon Ice Fundraiser. She began volunteering at Crossroads Community Hospital after the death of her second husband. Seeing the need in the gift shop there, she volunteered nearly every day, eventually becoming the gift shop manager. Jean also heads up special sales and the money is used to help enhance the comfort and care of the patients and visitors at Crossroads Hospital. She is a member and very active in the Logan Street Baptist Church. One person had this to say, "Jean Kennedy dedicates her life to volunteerism. She gives of herself and from the heart. Jean has volunteered more than 6,000 hours since 2007. Nomination Process Overview -The applicants for Jefferson County Senior Saint are measured on community service, civic activities, love of country, ability to embrace change and response to adversity. Nominations are screened for qualifications by the committee prior to their submission to judges who reside outside of our county. Recipients will be featured in the Fall Fest parade, and honored at the Annual Banquet at the Holiday Inn on Friday, November 6. For further information regarding nominees or banquet reservations, please visit the Jefferson C ounty Chamb er of Commerce, 200 Potomac Boulevard, Mount Vernon or call 618-242-5725.

In the news: • Kevin McCarthy steps aside • October 13 first Democrat debate • Nominees You gotta love it. Donald Trump is taking credit for Kevin McCarthy's decision to step back from the Speaker's position. I hate to tell "The Donald," but the only one who can take credit for this huge misstep is Kevin McCarthy and his mouth (a lack of communication skill). This proves on c e a g a i n t h at i n Washington, with both parties, we need grown ups to govern. Just think, we elect these people! But whoever gets the painful experience of being the next Speaker of the House needs to capture 218 votes, which seems a huge task with a party that fights one another, plus he or she would have to be into self abuse. At this point, Congress is absolutely a House divided. What a mess! The push is on to convince Mitt Romney's former running mate, Paul Ryan, to jump in. In my opinion, I don't see it happening. He has everything to lose and nothing to gain, especially if by chance he has Presidential ambitions in the future. Other considerations that I believe come into play are: 1) Time spent traveling. Ryan has a wife and three children, and he is a family man. It seems he would have to consider the fact he wouldn't be home every weekend. John Boehner spent 220 days last year alone just traveling for fund raising. 2) Fighting for the votes he would need. 3) The task of constant fund raising. 4) The knowledge that whoever — including him — that takes the Speaker of the House position will be attacked and criticized for the next three months by Ted Cruz and others. The last job in Washington I would want would be the Speaker of the House position, especially being a Republican right now, a member of a party that eats their own! It's just
one step better than the Washington Democrats. Frankly, I'll be shocked if Paul Ryan takes it on, although it's apparent he's left the door open! Time will tell. Last week John Boehner agreed to stay on until he is replaced. Remember, he was elected to serve through January 2017. Now there's talk of Newt Gingrich as interim Speaker, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Mitt Romney's name tossed into the mix (not a bad thing). The fact is, you don't have to be a member of Congress to be Speaker of the House, leaving that individual third in line, behind the Vice President, to lead the country. I hate to agree with Donald Trump, but I have to agree with his statement t h at it ' s b e d l am i n Washington, while Nancy Pelosi is trying to capitalize on everything. Nothing new. On to the CNN Democratic debate to be held Tuesday night, October 13 in Las Vegas, which should be interesting. Talk about shades of gray in socialism, with only one, Bernie Sanders, being honest enough to admit it! I believe Tuesday night's debate will focus on TransPacific Partnership (TPP), which Hillary Clinton has defended many times in the past (at least 45 times, but who's counting). However, now she's opposing TPP, as well as banking reforms, economic and equality issues, and a host of other socialist issues. Trust, I'll be glued to the tube! After Tuesday night's debate, Hillary is headed for Texas. Oh boy! Grits, barbecues and a southern accent! Remember my motto for her, anything for a vote! And after all, what she's in favor of today she'll be against in two weeks. I, for one, love barbecue and have a very slight southern Illinois accent, but I'll pass on the grits. Thanks anyway! Up next, who will be the Presidential nominees? I've usually called it by now but this time is so different. My early prediction is: Not Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. However, I —
unlike some — believe Donald Trump has been good for this election process because he's brought many issues that concern many Americans to the surface! Keep in mind, the outsiders hold the majority on the GOP ticket. 60% of the voters are favoring Trump, Carly, Carson and Cruz. Ben Carson has taken in $20 million in fund raising in the past three months, with poll numbers just behind Trump. On the Democrat side, Bernie Sanders stomped Hillary in New Hampshire. However, if Joe Biden jumps in, the whole dynamic changes. In my opinion, I don't see Hillary as the Democratic nominee, but maybe it's just wishful thinking. If Joe Biden gets in, Bernie will benefit from it, Hillary won't. Bernie Sanders supporters will stick with Bernie, but many Hillary Clinton supporters will move to Joe Biden. So who's the loser? Hillary. So in the end, in my opinion, if you can't beat Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire, you're not likely to be the nominee. We'll see. At press time Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post journalist who has been held for fourteen months in solitary confinement in prison by the Iranians, has been found guilty. This outrageous verdict came down Sunday from an Iranian court. The Obama administration chose to deal with this country without demanding a release. This whole Iranian nuclear deal was a bad deal, in my opinion, but the fact that we dealt with a government that is holding four Americans hostage is totally unacceptable. But what else would you expect from Barack Obama and John Kerry! How would you like to be an American depending on this administration! Until next week. Candied Apples 6 medium apples 6 wooden skewers or sticks 2 cups sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup 1 cup water Red food coloring
Wash and dry apples. Remove stem from each and insert wooden skewer securely in its place. In small heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and corn syrup in water over medium heat. Raise heat and boil rapidly until syrup reaches 300° on candy thermometer, the hard crack stage. (No thermometer? Drop a little of the mixture into very cold water; when removed, it will crack when tapped sharply.) Remove from heat and stir in enough food coloring to give a bright rosy color. Place saucepan in large pan of hot water. Holding each apple by its skewer, dip into syrup until completely coated; place on greased tray or cookie sheet to harden. 6 candied apples.
Some Fun Entertainment Ideas
• To create a unique Halloween decoration, select an assortment of dimensional characters and party favors and make a mobile. At the end of the party, give each guest an item from the mobile. • For a creative ghost story, seat children in a circle and give each one 30 seconds to add to a progressive ghost story. After the story, pass a sack of goodies and let each storyteller choose a treat. • Black crepe streamers can be part of your party decorations as well as a game. Before the party, wind several streamers of the same length around the room. (You'll need one for each child.) Start the streamers at different points, but have them all lead to the center of the web. Give each child a streamer. A prize goes to the first one to unravel the web. *** If you have a favorite recipe and want to share it with us, just send it in c/o The Shopper's Weekly, P.O. For the Glory of God (Part I) One of the greatest miracles of Jesus’ earthly ministry was raising his friend Lazarus from the dead. Think about it! After Lazarus had been dead four days and laid in a dark, cold tomb Jesus called him forth from the dead. Only God could have such power over death. Jesus gave us the reason why he waited four days before raising Lazarus. “When Jesus heard that, he said, ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’” (John 11:4) Jesus Christ is worthy of all praise, glory, and honor. Paul uses an interesting expression three times in Ephesians 1. “That we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14) How can we bring glory to God? In John 11 we see at least 11 things that can enable us to live to the praise of his glory. MARY’S ACT OF LOVE TEACHES US TO BRING GLORY TO GOD. John introduces Lazarus by pointing out a notable experience. “Now a certain man was sick. Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister, Martha. It was that

Mary, who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped his feet with her hair.” (John 11:1-2) People were shocked when Mary went into the room where Jesus was the guest of honor at a dinner. She broke a bottle of very expensive perfume and poured it on the feet of Jesus. Not having a towel, she knelt and wiped his feet with her hair. Why would Mary do that? Being so appreciative of what Jesus had done for her and in honor of who he was, Mary gave an extravagant act of worship and devotion to Jesus. Extravagant worship gives glory to God. (Revelation 4:8-11; 5:4-10) LAZARUS’ SICKNESS AND DEATH TEACHES US THAT MAN’S EXTREMITY IS GOD’S OPPORTUNITY. When Jesus was notified of Lazarus’ sickness, he replied, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son may be glorified through it.” (John 11:4) After Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he

stayed two more days where he was. (John 11:6) When God does not immediately respond to our plea some doubt God’s love. The Holy Spirit gave us this assurance. “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” (John 11:5) How could Lazarus’ sickness and death bring glory to God? When Jesus raised him from the dead! But when Jesus finally went to Lazarus, he had already been dead four days. (John 11:39) After four days in the tomb, there was no doubt that Lazarus was good and dead. Mary and Martha questioned Jesus’ delay in coming. There is a principle throughout the Bible that I call “God’s Divine Delay.” Someone said it this way, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” When situations become desperate and extreme, God will receive more glory when he comes through with a miracle. TAKING A RISK OF FAITH STEPS INTO GOD’S GLORY. Jesus said to his disciples, “’Let us go to Judea again.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone you and are you going there again?’” (John 11:7-8) David took a risk when he ran to meet the giant Goliath with his sling and five smooth stones. His
faith enabled him to kill the giant and bring God much glory. I read about a woman out west, whose little girl was snatched up by a tornado. The woman prayed, jumped on her horse, and chased after the tornado. The tornado eventually set the little girl down unharmed. The mother became known by the Indians as the Woman Who Chases Tornado. Those who take a risk of faith despite the danger bring glory to God. WALKING IN THE LIGHT BRINGS GLORY TO GOD. “Jesus answered, ‘Are there not 12 hours in the day? If anyone walks in the day, he does not stumble, because he sees the light of this world.’” (John 11:911) Jesus said, “We must work while it is day.” (John 9:4) When we take advantage of the opportunity placed before us, we bring God glory. Jesus said that the one who walks in darkness stumbles. When we walk the talk and Jesus is seen in us we bring God glory. Are you facing a seemingly insurmountable mountain? Apply these ways to bring God glory and experience a resurrection miracle. Shalom, Cliff Sanders Eagle Life Ministries eagleslife8@gmail.com

by Samantha Weaver • It was 19th-century French poet and philosopher Henri-Frederic Amiel who made the following sage observation: "Truth is violated by falsehood, but it is outraged by silence." • You might be surprised to learn that the game of Chinese checkers isn't actually Chinese in origin; it was invented in Germany. • If you consider all the militaries throughout the
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A workplace change doesn’t seem to have turned out quite as you’d hoped. Never mind: Just treat yourself to a healthy dollop of that Aries self-confidence, and you’ll soon view things differently. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some of the support you might have hoped for in a difficult situation might not be there. But you have the strength to rely on your own capabilities if you must. Good luck. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A disagreement with a longtime friend can be painful, but it also can be a learning lesson. Insist on a full and complete airing of views. You’ll both come away the better for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A stalled relationship can be restarted with some give and take on both sides. And while it could take more time than you expect, don’t rush it. Be patient, and let it happen naturally. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An opportunity to move a long-stalled project from concept to construction might be opening up for the Big Cat. Meanwhile, be prepared to spend more time dealing with family matters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Use your Virgo organizational skills to line up support to help you deal with a sticky workplace problem. A personal matter also might be helped with friendly intervention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to resolve a workplace problem with a longtime associate can be diffi-
cult. Consider bringing in an impartial third party to help you both reach a mutually acceptable solution. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to assess your current career situation. Consider whether you have a chance to move up where you are now, or if you should look elsewhere. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With education being a dominant part of this week’s aspect, one of the things you might want to think about is taking courses to enhance your career opportunities. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might have a problem trying to stay focused on a matter you’d rather not deal with. But the sooner you do, the sooner it will be resolved and out of the way. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unforeseen complication creates a difficult problem. But things get resolved once you use your ability to turn negative situations into positive experiences. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Pisces penchant for doing the right thing at the right time helps you deal with a particularly troublesome situation. Consider your best option, and act accordingly.
