paying attention. (Or, as was my case, you have a Minolta and you didn't get the shot.) I don't think these guys believe that God or the Procession of Saints are up there with x's and o's, sending in plays. Or maybe some of them do. But why do some people get so offended by that? Why is it OK that we can celebrate the greatest trash talkers, but we can't let a guy show a little humility and respect? These guys are straight-up gladiators of the modern day, and they're playing for your enjoyment — thumbs up, thumbs down. If the guy points up to heaven after a touchdown or a home run, that's not showing anybody up, and it's not endorsing whatever it is you think organized religion did or didn't do throughout history. If it's what that guy needs to get back to the huddle or, in the case of Joba Chamberlain, the Major Leagues, I am all for it because image isn't everything — no matter what Minolta said. *Pat's is the King of Steaks, but if you are going to get that worked up about who makes a better tasty cheese steak, there's something really the matter with you. Geno's is great, too. But then, who am I to judge?

I have never proclaimed to be a guru or Eastern philosopher. I'll leave all of that genius stuff to Chip Kelly because, yeah, he certainly looks like he's got it all figured out over there in Philadelphia. And now that the Pope is in Philadelphia and it's impossible to go to Philadelphia even if you wanted to, and Philadelphia thinks it's doing us a favor by keeping us out ... it gives me s ome t ime for thoughtful introspection. I kid Philadelphia. I love Philadelphia. Some of my best friends are Philadelphians. I think one of the greatest tests of a person's intelligence is asking them "Pat's or Geno's?"* But you just have to admire their timing. They kick out Tim Tebow a few weeks before the Pope gets there, and they still can't score two touchdowns against the Cowboys with DeMarco Murray in the backfield. My larger point here is about religion in sports, though. I've noticed over the years that some

people get very upset when athletes make the sign of the cross or they point up to the sky after a touchdown. They usually say something snarky like "God doesn't care if you scored a touchdown!" or "Don't thank God for sinking a shot." Stuff like that. There was a time I wasn't religious at all, and no, this isn't a story about how I was born again and I want to testify. But there was a time while working the sideline at a game that I almost got my head shattered by an Atlanta Falcons linebacker. The only thing that saved me was my ineptitude: I couldn't figure out how to shut off the flash on my Minolta, and I was crouched over about to smash it with a rock. If you think the NFL comes off as violent on TV and that those hits look hard from your couch, believe me when I tell you that when Keith Brooking's cleats clear your windpipe by a scant millimeter and a bunch Mark Vasto is a veteran of Indianapolis Colts sportswriter who lives in come flying over your supine legs in wave after New Jersey. wave, you either have an © 2015 King Features Synd., Inc. epiphany or you're not

CENTRALIA PROJECT PRIDE SEPTEMBER WINNERS UPCOMING KC SPORTS EVENTS Project Pride is a seasonal neighborhood recognition program sponsored by Keep Centralia Beautiful. The recognition is presented to homes and businesses that have made a notable contribution to their neighborhood through beautification and upkeep of their property. The City of Centralia has been divided into eight sections. One home in each section, along with one local business, will be presented with this honor during the months of May through December. This award is to those contributing to the beautification of their neighborhood. This year’s committee will make their tours around the city to choose the homes and one business each month. The homes chosen will be provided a sign for their yard for that month, a certificate and recognition in the Shoppers Weekly.

Thank you in advance for making a dedicated commitment to this program and your neighborhood. More people are taking pride in their yards and neighborhoods by putting time and effort into making their property a true asset to the community. After their hard work, they can enjoy the fruits of their toil and perhaps be recognized for helping make Centralia beautiful one neighborhood at a time. Centralia Clean and Green recently chose the properties pictured below as winners in the Project Pride program. Please feel free to call MiMi at 618-3224483 with the names and addresses of individuals you feel deserve this award. Thanks for helping Keep Centralia Beautiful. Q: I have what I think is one of the first Barbie dolls manufactured. Whom can I contact to find out more about it? — Leslie, Flagstaff, Arizona A: The Barbie doll was introduced in 1958 when Ruth Handler, wife of the co-founder of Mattel, decided that a fashion doll with an expensive wardrobe would be a fantastic idea. It was, and Barbie quickly became one of America's most popular dolls. Although Barbie has changed with the times, many collectors are interested in the earlier products. Scott Gram is a certified appraiser and a member of the International Society of Appraisers. He is an expert who is quite knowledgeable about Barbies. His contact is sdgram@qwest.net and 602-705-2503. *** Q: I have sent you two self-addressed, stamped envelopes with questions. I get a lot of questions, and all the ones that I answer appear in this column. If I provided personal answers, there would be no column. It's that simple. I pick the questions that I think would be of most interest to my readers. As I recall, you asked about the value of books, a question I have answered frequently in this column. ***

The "Smiley" cookie jar was popular during the 1940s, and I found several on eBay in the $50 to $150 range. Its value depends on several factors, including condition and version.

You gotta love it. Donald Trump is taking credit for Kevin McCarthy's decision to step back from the Speaker's position. I hate to tell "The Donald," but the only one who can take credit for this huge misstep is Kevin McCarthy and his mouth (a lack of communication skill). This proves on c e a g a i n t h at i n Washington, with both parties, we need grown ups to govern. Just think, we elect these people! But whoever gets the painful experience of being the next Speaker of the House needs to capture 218 votes, which seems a huge task with a party that fights one another, plus he or she would have to be into self abuse. At this point, Congress is absolutely a House divided. What a mess! The push is on to convince Mitt Romney's former running mate, Paul Ryan, to jump in. In my opinion, I don't see it happening. He has everything to lose and nothing to gain, especially if by chance he has Presidential ambitions in the future. Other considerations that I believe come into play are: 1) Time spent traveling. Ryan has a wife and three children, and he is a family man. It seems he would have to consider the fact he wouldn't be home every weekend. John Boehner spent 220 days last year alone just traveling for fund raising. 2) Fighting for the votes he would need. 3) The task of constant fund raising. 4) The knowledge that whoever — including him — that takes the Speaker of the House position will be attacked and criticized for the next three months by Ted Cruz and others. The last job in Washington I would want would be the Speaker of the House position, especially being a Republican right now, a member of a party that eats their own! It's just
Wednesday, October 14, 2015
one step better than the Washington Democrats. Frankly, I'll be shocked if Paul Ryan takes it on, although it's apparent he's left the door open! Time will tell. Last week John Boehner agreed to stay on until he is replaced. Remember, he was elected to serve through January 2017. Now there's talk of Newt Gingrich as interim Speaker, and I wouldn't be shocked to see Mitt Romney's name tossed into the mix (not a bad thing). The fact is, you don't have to be a member of Congress to be Speaker of the House, leaving that individual third in line, behind the Vice President, to lead the country. I hate to agree with Donald Trump, but I have to agree with his statement t h at it ' s b e d l am i n Washington, while Nancy Pelosi is trying to capitalize on everything. Nothing new. On to the CNN Democratic debate to be held Tuesday night, October 13 in Las Vegas, which should be interesting. Talk about shades of gray in socialism, with only one, Bernie Sanders, being honest enough to admit it! I believe Tuesday night's debate will focus on TransPacific Partnership (TPP), which Hillary Clinton has defended many times in the past (at least 45 times, but who's counting). However, now she's opposing TPP, as well as banking reforms, economic and equality issues, and a host of other socialist issues. Trust, I'll be glued to the tube! After Tuesday night's debate, Hillary is headed for Texas. Oh boy! Grits, barbecues and a southern accent! Remember my motto for her, anything for a vote! And after all, what she's in favor of today she'll be against in two weeks. I, for one, love barbecue and have a very slight southern Illinois accent, but I'll pass on the grits. Thanks anyway! Up next, who will be the Presidential nominees? I've usually called it by now but this time is so different. My early prediction is: Not Donald Trump or Hillary Clinton. However, I —
unlike some — believe Donald Trump has been good for this election process because he's brought many issues that concern many Americans to the surface! Keep in mind, the outsiders hold the majority on the GOP ticket. 60% of the voters are favoring Trump, Carly, Carson and Cruz. Ben Carson has taken in $20 million in fund raising in the past three months, with poll numbers just behind Trump. On the Democrat side, Bernie Sanders stomped Hillary in New Hampshire. However, if Joe Biden jumps in, the whole dynamic changes. In my opinion, I don't see Hillary as the Democratic nominee, but maybe it's just wishful thinking. If Joe Biden gets in, Bernie will benefit from it, Hillary won't. Bernie Sanders supporters will stick with Bernie, but many Hillary Clinton supporters will move to Joe Biden. So who's the loser? Hillary. So in the end, in my opinion, if you can't beat Bernie Sanders in New Hampshire, you're not likely to be the nominee. We'll see. At press time Jason Rezaian, the Washington Post journalist who has been held for fourteen months in solitary confinement in prison by the Iranians, has been found guilty. This outrageous verdict came down Sunday from an Iranian court. The Obama administration chose to deal with this country without demanding a release. This whole Iranian nuclear deal was a bad deal, in my opinion, but the fact that we dealt with a government that is holding four Americans hostage is totally unacceptable. But what else would you expect from Barack Obama and John Kerry! How would you like to be an American depending on this administration! Until next week. EAGLE LIFE
Ministries by: Cliff Sanders
For the Glory of God (Part I) One of the greatest miracles of Jesus’ earthly ministry was raising his friend Lazarus from the dead. Think about it! After Lazarus had been dead four days and laid in a dark, cold tomb Jesus called him forth from the dead. Only God could have such power over death. Jesus gave us the reason why he waited four days b efore raising Lazarus. “When Jesus heard that, he said, ‘This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified through it.’” (John 11:4) Jesus Christ is worthy of all praise, glory, and honor. Paul uses an interesting expression three times in Ephesians 1. “That we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of his glory.” (Ephesians 1:6, 12, 14) How can we bring glory to God? In John 11 we see at least 11 things that can enable us to live to the praise of his glory. MARY’S ACT OF LOVE TEACHES US TO BRING GLORY TO GOD. John introduces Lazarus by pointing out a notable experience. “Now a certain man was sick. Lazarus of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister, Martha. It was that Mary, who anointed the Lord with fragrant oil and wiped his feet with her hair.” (John 11:1-2) People were shocked when Mary went into the room where Jesus was the guest of honor at a dinner. She broke a bottle of very expensive perfume and poured it on the feet of Jesus. Not having a towel, she knelt and wiped his feet with her hair. Why would Mary do that? Being so appreciative of what Jesus had done for her and in honor of who he was, Mary gave an extravagant act of worship and devotion to Jesus.
Extravagant worship gives glory to God. (Revelation 4:8-11; 5:4-10) LAZARUS’ SICKNESS AND DEATH TEACHES US THAT MAN’S EXTREMITY IS GOD’S OPPORTUNIT Y. When Jesus was notified of Lazarus’ sickness, he replied, “This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son may be glorified through it.” (John 11:4) After Jesus heard that Lazarus was sick, he stayed two more days where he was. (John 11:6) When God does not immediately respond to our plea some doubt God’s love. The Holy Spirit gave us this assurance. “Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.” (John 11:5) How could Lazarus’ sickness and death bring glory to God? When Jesus raised him from the dead! But when Jesus finally went to Lazarus, he had already been dead four days. (John 11:39) After four days in the tomb, there was no doubt that Lazarus was good and dead. Mary and Martha questioned Jesus’ delay in coming. There is a principle throughout the Bible that I call “God’s Divine Delay.” Someone said it this way, “Man’s extremity is God’s opportunity.” When situations become desperate and extreme, God will receive more glory when he comes through with a miracle. TAKING A RISK OF FAITH STEPS INTO GOD’S GLORY. Jesus said to his disciples, “’Let us go to Judea again.’ The disciples said to him, ‘Rabbi, lately the Jews sought to stone you and are you going there again?’” (John 11:7-8) David took a risk when he ran to meet the giant Goliath with his sling and five smooth stones. His faith enabled him to kill the giant and bring God much glory. I read about a woman out west, whose little girl was

More Halloween Recipes Here are some more trick-or-treat favorites.
Orange Doughnut Drops 2 eggs 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 T. butter, softened 2 cups flour 2 tsp. baking powder
1/4 tsp. salt 1/2 cup orange juice 2 T. finely grated orange peel Oil for deep frying Confectioners' sugar
Beat eggs; then beat in granulated sugar and butter. Sift flour, baking powder and salt together; stir into egg mixture alternately with orange juice and peel. Heat oil to 375° in large saucepan or deep skillet. Drop batter into oil by scant teaspoonfuls; do not overcrowd. (Batter will drop easily if you dip spoon into hot oil before dipping it into batter.) Fry until golden brown, then turn to brown evenly. Remove with slotted spoon. Drain on paper towels and dust with confectioners' sugar. 3 dozen 1½-inch doughnut drops.
Popcorn Balls 1 cup light corn syrup 1/2 cup sugar 1 pkg. (3 oz.) fruit-flavored gelatin
1 cup coarsely chopped peanuts 3 qts. popped popcorn (about 3/4 cup unpopped)
Combine corn syrup and sugar in large heavy saucepan; bring to boil, stirring. Remove from heat and add gelatin, stirring until dissolved. Stir in peanuts and popcorn and mix well. When cool enough to handle, shape into balls with lightly buttered hands. Wrap each ball in plastic wrap and tie with orange ribbon or yarn. 12 popcorn balls.
Candied Apples 6 medium apples 6 wooden skewers or sticks 2 cups sugar
2/3 cup light corn syrup 1 cup water Red food coloring
Wash and dry apples. Remove stem from each and insert wooden skewer securely in its place. In small heavy saucepan, dissolve sugar and corn syrup in water over medium heat. Raise heat and boil rapidly until syrup reaches 300° on candy thermometer, the hard crack stage. (No thermometer? Drop a little of the mixture into very cold water; when removed, it will crack when tapped sharply.) Remove from heat and stir in enough food coloring to give a bright rosy color. Place saucepan in large pan of hot water. Holding each apple by its skewer, dip into syrup until completely coated; place on greased tray or cookie sheet to harden. 6 candied apples.

REPRESENTATIVE CHARLIE MEIER RECEIVES THE DR. W.P. PLASSMAN AWARD

Murray Center Parents' Association and Murray Center residents gathered to present the Dr. W.P. Plassman Award to Rep Charlie Meier.
Murray Center Residents Gary Allen, Lindsey Webb, and Angie Munie (seated) present award to Rep. Meier. Submitted Photos
Rep. Charlie Meier received the Plassman award recently from the Murray Parents' Association. Rep. Meier's family attended the event, and three residents presented him with a picture of a tree stamped with the Murray residents' fingerprints that says "Thank you Rep. Meier from the Murray Center Residents 2015". The three residents who presented the picture to him were Gary Allen, Lindsey Webb, and Angie Munie (seated). The prestigious Dr. W.P. Plassman award was started in 1977 by the Murray Parents' Association to honor Dr. Plassman who was instrumental in helping to start the Murray Parents' Association. Dr. Plassman became the superintendent of Murray Center in 1970 and he immediately saw a need for a parents' organization, and arranged to have a Parents' Day for two successive years with the hope that a parents' group would materialize from these days. After the Second Parents' Day in October 1971, the organizational meeting took place and the Murray Parents Association was born. The first meetings were held in Anita Becherer's home with several parents' attending. Without the cooperation of Dr. Plassman and the staff of Murray Developmental C enter, the Parents' Association could not have been possible. Therefore, it was seen that the award should be named for Dr. W. P. Plassman, who believed strongly not only in residents' rights, but in parents' rights also. The award honors individuals who volunteer their time to make outstanding
contributions towards helping to promote better understanding of the disabled, and who work towards bettering the lives of the disabled. Dr. Plassman served as the superintendent of Murray Center from 1971to 1982. Since 1977 fourteen people have been honored with the Plassman Award; Anita Becherer (1977), Ethel West (1979), Nancy Scott (1981), Phyllis Hatfield (1984), Wes and Lois Heintz (1984), Ed Elmore (1987), Howard Phillips (1987), John and Betty Stumpe (1991), Mary Phillips (1994), Audrey L. Kolar (1998), Senator Frank Watson (2001), Vickie Niederhofer (2005), and Rita Winkeler (2014). Below is the nomination letter read during the presentation. "We want to nominate Representative Charlie Meier for the Dr. Plassman Award for his dedication, and devotion to the special residents of Murray Center. Since his election in 2013 Rep. Meier has been on a constant mission to keep Murray Center open as a home for our residents. He has fought on the House floor and throughout the capitol in Springfield for our loved ones' right to live at Murray Center. He has spent countless hours working with other legislators, the parents/guardians, and community leaders to plan and implement ways to keep Murray Center open. "Even when he was told 'Murray is going to close' he refused to back down, and continued to fight. Rep. Meier has made countless trips to Springfield and Chicago, using his own
money to meet with department leaders, and any one he thought could help the cause to keep Murray Center open. Since the election of Governor Rauner Representative Meier has continued to advocate for Murray Center, and is working with the Governor's office to help make Murray Center a number one center that will be open for generations to come. Rep. Meier does not just advocate for the Murray Center residents. He now receives frequent phone calls and emails requesting help from parents whose disabled loved ones are in
need of services, and he works to help them find the best possible services for these disabled individuals. Representative Meier introduced and had legislation passed that made handicapped accessible park projects a priority so the disabled and their families will be able to enjoy outdoor recreational activities. The Dr. W.P. Plassman award was started to honor an individual who has made outstanding contributions towards helping to improve the lives of the disabled. We are humbled and honored to present this award to Representative Charlie Meier."

Centralia Recreation Complex Celebrates
20th Anniversary The Centralia Recreation Complex, located at 115 East Second Street, was a $5 million project that was built with private funds. Getting the Complex built was a team effort. Some of the individuals involved in the initial 1991 meetings included Verle B esant, Ken D i l l i ng h a m , Jo h n Lackey, Marvin Miller, Ira Kaye Salisbury, Bill Sprehe and L loyd Vestal. There were also almost 200 individuals involved in fund raising efforts for the Complex. In addition, more than 700 individuals contributed to the campaign. In the beginning, former C entralia
Foundation trustee David Harris spent several years meeting with members of the Centralia Foundation, Centralia Recreation Department and Little Egypt YMCA organizing a plan whereby the groups could work together toward the common goal of replacing the Community Center. Unfortunately, he was transferred to St. Louis before he could realize his goal. Maur y Bouas took Harris' place but soon moved away as well. At this point, Bruce Geary stepped up and took over. On July 10, 1992 the Centralia Foundation announced that it had initiated a study to determine the feasibility

of building a community center. Foundation trustee Bruce Geary was named chairman of the Building Committee. Geary said the aging Community Center at 228 S. Walnut St. had only one basketball court and was not accessible to people with disabilities. A new recreation building could include multiple courts, an indoor pool, meeting ro oms, a skating rink, tennis courts, racquetball courts and a ballroom. It was announced that the Foundation, working with Bryce Hastings, architect and president of Hastings and Chivett Architects Inc. of St. Louis, would complete the feasibility study in 90 days.
Geary said Hastings would study community demographics and needs, and that Hastings' master plan would include a needs assessment, site analysis, design concepts, project cost estimates and project schedule. Preliminary architectural designs for the proposed $7 million community recreation center were unveiled on July 28, 1992. The master plan, designed for a maximum of 70,000 square feet, was to be split into three construction phases. The first phase would include a two-court gym. The second phase was to include an indoor pool and the third phase could
contain a second gym and racquetball courts. In early 1993 proponents of the project began meeting in homes and anywhere they could get people to listen and contribute ideas. Support for the project swelled and they soon had over 160 people endorsing the project. Fund raising was completed the fall of 1993. Construction drawings and bids were completed in the first half of 1994, ground was broken on June 26, 1994, and the Centralia Recreation Complex opened on October 2, 1995. The new building was huge, with 50,000 square feet. The dual gym, with a three-lane,
1/12-mile jogging track suspended around it, covered 13,000 square feet, almost enough to swallow the old Community Center it replaced. A 13,000 s quare fo ot ro om housed the swimming pools. About 35 construction workers were on the job on a typical day. At one time, 15 bricklayers were kept busy. The Complex has always offered year round activities for the whole family. When they first opened in October of 1995 they had basketball and volleyball courts, a child care room, a cardiovascular room, flex-fitness machinery and walking and jogging tracks. They also had an

PoolPak
The Centralia Foundation is determined to keep the Complex in a high state of repair so the community can continue to enjoy its benefits. This year the facility has installed a new twenty year roof and have contracted to replace the pool equipment. Fortunately, they have funds on hand to cover these costs. But after 20 years of heavy use there are other repairs and equipment replacements that also need to be made. Gifts to the Centralia Foundation are tax deductible. If you can help with a contribution please call the Foundation at 618-532-7424.
One of the Centralia Recreation Complex's facility improvements was the installation of the new PoolPak units. Pictured at right is one of the units being placed into position.

So, while it’s fine to let your dog romp in leaf piles (as long as the neighbors aren’t bothered), it’s important to check its coat for fleas and ticks as soon as possible after that fun ends. Ticks should be removed and then

by Samantha Weaver • It was 19th-century French poet and philosopher Henri-Frederic Amiel who made the following sage observation: "Truth is violated by falsehood, but it is outraged by silence." • You might be surprised to learn that the game of Chinese checkers isn't actually Chinese in origin; it was invented in Germany. • If you consider all the militaries throughout the
ARIES (March 21 to April 19) A workplace change doesn’t seem to have turned out quite as you’d hoped. Never mind: Just treat yourself to a healthy dollop of that Aries self-confidence, and you’ll soon view things differently. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Some of the support you might have hoped for in a difficult situation might not be there. But you have the strength to rely on your own capabilities if you must. Good luck. GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) A disagreement with a longtime friend can be painful, but it also can be a learning lesson. Insist on a full and complete airing of views. You’ll both come away the better for it. CANCER (June 21 to July 22) A stalled relationship can be restarted with some give and take on both sides. And while it could take more time than you expect, don’t rush it. Be patient, and let it happen naturally. LEO (July 23 to August 22) An opportunity to move a long-stalled project from concept to construction might be opening up for the Big Cat. Meanwhile, be prepared to spend more time dealing with family matters. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) Use your Virgo organizational skills to line up support to help you deal with a sticky workplace problem. A personal matter also might be helped with friendly intervention. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Trying to resolve a workplace problem with a longtime associate can be diffi-
cult. Consider bringing in an impartial third party to help you both reach a mutually acceptable solution. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) This is a good time to assess your current career situation. Consider whether you have a chance to move up where you are now, or if you should look elsewhere. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) With education being a dominant part of this week’s aspect, one of the things you might want to think about is taking courses to enhance your career opportunities. CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) You might have a problem trying to stay focused on a matter you’d rather not deal with. But the sooner you do, the sooner it will be resolved and out of the way. AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) An unforeseen complication creates a difficult problem. But things get resolved once you use your ability to turn negative situations into positive experiences. PISCES (February 19 to March 20) The Pisces penchant for doing the right thing at the right time helps you deal with a particularly troublesome situation. Consider your best option, and act accordingly.
